The leaderboard counts a players best score of the day already

Are you sure it is not because other people have passed you?
Or that it is a new day reset?

If you die on Wave 25 and take the checkpoint down to Wave 21 and lose there it will only count your 21 as being the final score so maybe it is that?
Otherwise don't know what to tell you
