I think you are mistaken here, on a default setup there will be no interface on the screen itself, you have to use a browser on your pc and connect to the pi, either with its URL (http://<inserthostname>.local) or the IP of your pi.

#

As a hint, make sure your browser dont switch to https automatically, there is no https by default.

Sorry that's what I mean, I have the pi connected to a monitor just so I can see what's going on in the console, but it times out if I try to access the interface from my other computer via browser

so I followed the same steps, but chose the option for raspberry pi 4 this time and it worked fione for some reason.

choose raspberrry pi 3 and flash it onto my pi 3 and it didnt work, choose pi 4 and flash to my pi 4 and worked fine.

Unfortunatly I cant reproduce, because I dont own a pi3, but I guess you didnt wait long enough, especially if you renamed the user. In this case there will be much more happening in the background and if it gets interrupted it ruins the whole image.

#

You could try again with pi3 but this time dont alter username.
