#MainsailOS on Pi 5

MainsailOS != Mainsail
Mainsail is supported. I recommend to use a Raspberry Pi OS Lite and install everything with https://github.com/dw-0/kiauh
Cool, ill have a look! Thank you very much for the quick reply
pay attation, that webcam support is "crap" right now on the pi5...
i will keep that in mind ๐ Thanks for the heads up
To be precise, no camera-streamer support and therefore no picam support with crowsnest
wait so be clear, if I use a external webcam, this also won't work witht he pi 5?
What do you mean with external webcam? A pi has no internal webcam
USB cams will work. Yes. Pi cams won't work
i meant an usb cam yea
so a pi 5 would work?
Accessing in Mainsail a webcam on a different IP works too ofc
Yes, but only with USB cams
Alrighty! looks like I will be ordering a pi 5 then, just 7 euro difference
Just 7โฌ?
I would order a pi4 โฆ The pi5 is not really made for our 3d printer use case
oh, i just received the pi 5 ๐
would it still be possible to get it running on the pi 5? Because the Raspi imager doesn't give Mainsail OS as an option
You can use The normal Raspberry Pi OS lite image and use kiauh to install everything.
I think alexz meant to say, that the Pi5 is basically overspecced for the 3D printing use case.
There are also some "issues" like different location for specific stuff, or the missing HW encoders for webrtc that would need less bandwidth compared to a mjpg stream.
To match the topic, One day there will be MainsailOS on Pi5, there is much more to do then simply adding "bookworm" to our build chain as we found out lately, but if you are not afraid running "preproduction alpha versions" and maaayyybee interessted in improving them, you are welcome.
Regarding the Pi5 itself, yes, it has plenty of compute power and yes it my be a valid choice for several other projects. But, in my personal opinion there are not that huge benefits compared to pi3b+ or pi4. If a 3B+ can handle several klipper operations with ease, the price has to be justified somehow. With a pi4 you gain a Hardware H264 encoder working with camera-streamer to have webrtc(better framerate, lower network load). This will be lost on a pi5 because it has no Hardware H264 encoder and forces you to use the much network load heavier MJPG(or adaptive mjpg=, as Mr. Yel explained already.
That said if I can save a couple bucks only to put the pi into a printer I would go for a pi4 2Gb RAM(currently owning only 4GB models but from times where they where really cheap) and saving the Pi5 for other projects like Docker host for several microservices or Proxmox on Arm something like that.
I hope this help you to decide.
Ahhh okay.
So my current case
Pi4 8gb i have for my unifi controller and VPN
And i was about to use the pi5 for mainsail.
It would be best to swap them?
You might gain some performance on your vpn and probably a bit "snappier" unify ctrl ... Personaly I would swap them, for the reason to have H264. Performancewise regarding klipper it makes no difference(besides 8GB Ram are bit wasted there ๐ )
Alright. Already hate the idea๐
Dont think my friend ia gonna like, who has to setup my vpn again๐
I cant just swap the sd cards right?
Never heard of it tbh
Debian uses Codenames for their Versioning, these are always charakters from Toystory Universe. Bookworm is the actual Debian 12, which you get if you used the latest Raspberry PIOS. Bullseye was the previous release and now called 'legacy' on rpi website
Ohhh. I use Ubuntu 22.04 lts
Dont know who invented this trend, but I always recommend using RaspberryPIOS I think they know exactly what they are doing ๐
But might work, to switch sdcards then. Never used Ubuntu on a Pi/other sbc.
Mhh alright.
@cloud eagle @rigid hedge (sorry if i'm not supposed to tag you)
I just switched pi's. Now about to install mainsail on my pi4 8gb
Would you recommend mainsail OS or raspberrypi os with kiauh
because i had the feeling both of you had others opinion and want to do whats best, and easiest ofcourse ๐
MainsailOS ofc and I think we have the same opinion on that.
MainsailOS is just the more convenient way as everything is already installed.
alrighty! flashing it right now
And to get a more non-biased opinion:
Bookworm makes us a lot of trouble lately and we see more and more issues that can occur
ahhh okay
On the Pi5 subject I'm more the odd one out in the crew ^^
I'm someone that would run multiple things on the pi5 besides klipper just to get more out of it, if I would see that it's basically idling all the time.
For the Pi5 there is only one option for the OS, as it can only run Bookworm images and therefore you can only use the official image as there is no MainsailOS yet released.
Yea I saw that, and I want to use a cam. So that coding on the pi4 is amazing
Anyways, installed it. lets boot it up!
For everything further I suggest a new thread as we got away from the initial topic ^^
Yea I will, thanks!
