I'm saying if they are new to multiplayer and this is one of the first servers they have joined, there is a chance they wouldn't know what tab does or they might not think it would show anything. With icons, it would be easier to figure it out. When I think about it more, icons would be fine. Just a color could be confusing, especially if this is their first time joining and they have never seen the ranks before. I think what Coswic showed is a good suggestion, because it would still work for inexperienced players.
