When I first wrote the subsonic provider, I took the maximalist approach to associating artists to tracks and I associate the artist ID listed on the track as the one. This was fine for my collection at that point because I had hand created most of the tags and artist for the track would almost always match the one for the album.

However, now that I have run my collection through beets the track artist string tends to contain the entire list of folks on a given track. So if I have an album by Atmosphere, I also see an artist entry (in the Artists view) for 'Atmosphere feat. deM atlasS' and 'Atmosphere feat. Aesop Rock', etc. I am conflicted about if this is a problem (though a user in #subsonic does think so). On one hand, when I click on Atmosphere, I want to see all the albums and tracks for that group. But I get that other users may want to have tracks sorted by the artists on that particular track. My question, now that I have rambled about it, is: is there a consensus on the 'right' thing to do here?

While I don't know the subsonic provider or if there is a consensus. I think the current "toggle album-artist filter" on the artists page does the job quite well. You can either see ALL artist of all albums (including "guest artists") - or "if you switch the filter on" you'll see only the artists that actually did the album (excluding "guest artists"). However, I concentrate on "artist centric" albums and intentionally exlude Compilations or Soundtracks ...

Typically with Picard the multiple artists would be listed as track artists but just one album artist (although it is permissible to have more). Therefore, in your first example, I would expect the album artist would be Atmosphere and the track artists would be Atmosphere and deM atlasS. Thus in the UI under Atmosphere you would see the album and the track. Under deM atlasS there would only be tracks, no albums. As @sleek wolf said the user is then able to use the album artist filter to make the artist view less busy.
