Setting up subdomains?

Has anyone had any joy in setting up subdomains?

In Vercel, at my team level, I have my domain setup as a 3rd party domain. I have the nameservers on Namecheap pointed to the vercel name servers, and in the DNS record son Vercel, I have my subdomains setup as CNAMEs to the domain

When I then go to my project, and try to configure a wildcard for this domain, it errors with
Your team does not have access to this domain, please contact support to prove ownership in order to enable wildcard subdomains.

If i go to subdomain.domain.com, then I get a vercel 404 for a non found deployment, so im unsure how i'm supposed to proceed?
