Configure a single route to not include trailing slash

My site is configured to include a trailing slash, as set in next.config.js file. But now I need to exclude a trailing slash for a single route as part of a reverse proxy configuration. I've tried using a combination of rewrites and redirects and middleware logic, but I seem to either end up in a redirect loop or I still get a trailing slash.
