#Does `fetch` inside middleware bypass middleware for the requested route?

I'm using Next 14 with next-connect for middleware. Weirdly when fetching an api endpoint (http://localhost:3000/api/...) inside the middleware it seems to go straight to the endpoint and ignore middleware for the fetch. Is this intentional?
