Would someone please explain to me how to find the staircase to the dungeons. I've been trying for about an hour. I am in a Slytherin, and have tried from inside the Slytherin area and from outside, down from the Lower Grand Staircase area. I cannot find this place!

I think the most direct route for the main dungeon area is via the Bell Tower Courtyard entrance. The passages can be confusing and interconnected, which is why it can be easy to get lost.
Fast Travel to the Bell Tower Courtyard Floo Flame.
From the Floo Flame, turn left and go up a short set of stairs, entering the first door in front of you into the North Hall.
Proceed straight and go down the several flights of stairs you encounter in the North Hall.
At the bottom, you will arrive in the dungeon proper, where you can find the Sleeping Dragon Statue and the entrance to the Alchemy Classroom.
Some specific doorways
area around the Slytherin common room is part of the main dungeons, such as the entrance to the Salazar Slytherin Scriptorium which looks like a plain stone wall near the common room entrance hallway and it might only be accessible during specific main storyline quests with Sebastian Sallow.
