You can switch to Story difficulty, in which case you can bypass the minigame. Elsewise, you will need to move the colored lights until the gears begin spinning. Once a gear does start spinning, you need to hold the associated light in place. Once both gears are spinning, the lock will unlock.

You need to find a troll lair and defeat one.
You can check on your map to see if you've been near any; off the top of my head there's one in the Forbidden Forest and one near Feldcroft if you haven't

Fun fact: I've completed the field guide challenge for killing trolls twice, both times before doing Professor Onai's Assignment. And both times, as soon as I harvested a plant from my Room of Requirement, that satisfied the 'troll bogey' part of her assignment; I guess the game decided, "Okay, yeah, you clearly know how to kill trolls by now, so we'll just let you have this one."

It takes a while. If I were you, I would cast at a wall nearby them (possibly after taking an invisibility potion, for added insurance against them noticing you). They usually turn around and go back downstairs not long after that. Or if you have the invisibility potion upgrade talent, just drink one and walk right past them.

Like I said, cast at a wall near them. They'll look around like WTF, you stay very still and out of their line of sight, and then they'll probably go downstairs.
