We never actually “learn” it in game. It’s one of the spells you have when you are in the beginning of the game! I didn’t know I had it either until I was 1/3 into the story and got the combat challenge too!

Nope, it's definitely when you do the mission right before the first trial, from Fig. That's when the game explicitly tells you about it and gives you the instructional popup. I'm not sure if it's there earlier on as mentioned
