I'm stuck in a stairwell chamber during this quest. I went into the tower and a doorway appeared. I went into it and the doorway closed. The other door out is locked. Please help

i reloaded an autosave . the trick is to go UP the tower first, the "investigate" doorway that opens up isn't supposed to be there until after you talk to the painting upstairs.
