material select multi with small button trigger

Is it possible to have a small width button that triggers a multi select menu without having a wide input field for the multi select form field? It seems a small button is possible for a simple mat-menu trigger, but not for a multi select, which is built to be inside a form-field according to the docs

It's the wide grey input I want to be small, but then the multi select menu inside also become small..
