Crafted a new Enchanters Sword.
Enchanted is with Looting II, Sharpness II and Reactive 1.
The reactive spell inscribed was originally Touch->Delay->Spark->Amplify.

When I hit a mob, an orange message appears in chat saying "The spell may not be empty".
The spell does appear to take effect though, as I see mobs with the spark derived "shocked" debuff.

Subsequent experiments resulted in the same message being produced, with the simplest variant being:
- Naked (no armour), wielding only the enchanted sword with the reactive spell "touch->harm" inscribed.

Other variations checked are listed below for completeness, but the above is the simplest one.

  1. Touch -> spark -> amplify (ie removed the delay from original). "Spell cannot be empty" message still appears.

  2. touch -> harm -> amplify. New mob, same message.

  3. touch -> harm. Same message.

  4. Removed all gear (arcanist gear and spellbook from offhand, so just wielding the sword. Using spell inscribed in (3), hit a zombie. Same message.

I've figured it out - what I'd done was add a Reactive spell enchant, not inscribed a spell.
These are different things - one at the enchanting apparatus (which I'd done) and one at the scribe table (which I'd missed).

I've now added a dispel (no form, no modifiers) spell at the scribing table to the sword and it's stopped giving the message.
It also makes getting Wixie tokens super easy. ๐Ÿ˜„

So the bug is actually if your Enchanter's Sword has no inscribed spell, it (presumably?) still tries to cast the non-existant spell, fails and gives that message in chat.
Or something along those lines. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, i noticed only now that it has reactive

#

Unsure how much a bug it is

#

it was simply warning you that you weren't using the sword's main ability

Aye, fair enough - perhaps more of a minor improvement.
I'm not sure if that error is used anywhere else, but if it's not then being more specific as to which spell (ie the sword has nothing inscribed) might have mitigated my bafflement.

Or perhaps a line in the in-game book documentation under enchanters swords, mentioning Reactive enchants as a thing, so newbies like me are explicitly told in the same place that inscribed spells and reactive spells are two different things. ๐Ÿ™‚

I mean, the tooltip says you can put a spell on it via scribe table

#

And most people don't end up knowing reactive at all

#

While a legit user flow, it seems a very rare one

#

It's right to consider mentioning that the two can coexist tho

Current documentation probably won't change but a full rewrite is planned
