Frankly, I gotta admit I’m also not liking the Thor as much as the Pocket DS (even ignoring the stuff that seems to directly be issues exclusive to mine in the form of hardware defects, I still actually prefer the ergo’s on the Pocket DS, the only thing I like more about the Thor being the smaller size and lighter weight).

But that sure as shit won’t stop me from calling out DNA for having the single most biased possible take on the matter and still trying to pretend he’s a “legit unbiased” reviewer.

Currently the Speakers are what seems to legit be exclusive to me, and then there’s also the image retention that apparently (from other people’s inputs on legitimately not being able to find them) might not be an issue on all Thor’s (which in turn means they would be only on some versions).

It would be a hell of a stretch, but consider the following timeline of events

Google finishes loading up the shotgun aimed at their foot and executes the "no sideloading apps anymore on Android" plan (yes I know they're already backpedalling on that but frankly at this point Google can't be trusted)
Valve releases a SteamOS ARM handheld in response while promoting its spread on other ARM devices in the background
The Thor gets noticed as a notable portion of the devices making up the previously Android devices now running SteamOS
Some indie devs take notice and start releasing dual-screen focused games on Steam

Are you using an alternative frontend besides QuickStep as the home App? If you are, then that would be the cause currently, until they figure out the fix (and unfortunately this does also impact the Thor/Odin Launcher, so even their own frontend isn’t immune to it, with it also showing that the issue isn’t being caused by the frontend).

Now, should I buy the Thor, especially given that it has a clamshell 2 screen design (fascinating for DS lovers)?

The only issue is that it's the exact same device with a different form factor (internally).

I don't wanna spend the money on Ayaneo (and it has many software issues + unpredictable shipping situation from Ayaneo).

DS1 Remastered runs perfectly, DS2 SotFS runs petty well with somewhat irregular crashes (sometimes it runs for hours with no crashes and other times it crashes within minutes). I had to set all graphics options to low with shadows on and AO on to get a locked 30fps (SotFS)

yes, you can mod games and launch them via gamehub. I can't guarantee that all mods work, but I have modded Hollow Knight, Skyrim SE, and Dark Souls II SotFS and all work

also, my Thor's fan buzz has got progressively worse to the point it buzzes even while stationary and not just when the device is tilted/shaken. My replacement fan and heatsink are at the post office, so I'll do the replacement sometime next week. Hopefully it fixes the issue. I'm scared to play anything that requires anything more than standard performance because the fan sounds horrendous

also for anyone wondering, I have treated my Thor like a newborn baby since receiving it, so whatever the fan issue, it's not through mistreating the device

I can't argue that. After seeing both RP Flip and Flip 2 hinges crack then watching AYN use the same hinge design for the Thor it's no surprise that they're starting to crack, but I still have some sympathy for folks who bought a Thor since in spite of their Retroid affiliation this is the first time that an AYN device has had a major QC issue.

Plus people were just really excited about dual screen gaming that actually worked, and with OLED screens no less. So yeah, maybe it wasn't entirely unexpected, but still a bummer for those who bought one and have been really excited about it.

I've owned two first gen Nintendo DSes, neither of them had their hinge survive to today.

Keeping moving parts from breaking is always a challenge. Ultimately, the safest way to engineer it is not having a hinge in the first place

Personally I'm probably going to be adopting the Thor as my "primary" because I tend to value portability over raw performance and my library includes few demanding game hardware wise, making my Steam Deck and my laptop more of a secondary device for the few games that this device won't handle than the other way around. But that's mostly semantics

And in the Thor's case, I highly value the ability to play 3/DS games in their original form factor.

Don't forget Powkiddy lol Weirdly I don't think I've ever heard of a single V90 hinge cracking. Powkiddy makes a lotta jank, but one thing they do know how to make is a reliable hinge.
