#AYN Thor
1 messages · Page 19 of 1
People are telling me to go to Rose's at Penn Station?
Hmm if you don't have time / are coming in via train I think that's a good option.
That's a very 2012 picture.
Thats Gotham, not NYC
Batman charged me $5 for the photo, a very fair 2012 price!
Adjusted for inflation and tariffs thats about $2000 in today's money
I was there with my old alt rock band
Which was basically Coldplay meets linkin Park, at best
Im trying to imagine that mash up
Best to not 😆
Fair enough 🤣
Hard alt-rock but you point out cheaters in the audience
There it is!
Behind the scenes for the recording of Crown Point's sophomore full length album, Oceans.

Curtains EP out November 13th
Oceans coming Spring 2013!
More or less explains it
https://github.com/likeich/console-launcher/releases/tag/v2.0.0-beta2.1
Console launcher Just got an update for dual screen support
Release Notes
New Features
➕ Added secondary display info screen with RetroAchievements integration.
➕ Added auto-focus for the first launchable in folders and the app drawer.
➕ Made GridMenu resol...
Nice
oooh .. i never tried that one
Is DHL charging you duties on it? I’m worried it’s gonna be a lot if they do.
Kinda tempted to get a Thor, is it possible to run like Retroarch on the top screen and brave on the bottom with a gamefaqs open?
yes
This is the PRO version (12GB RAM, 256GB storage)
Review unit provided by AYN
From my understanding it’s up to the business to pay for the duties not the shipping provider
Nice, my man Bob is on it
I'm not sure yet, hope to find out tomorrow
huh, I wonder if this would work with a PS5 remote play app on top and the PS game guide on the bottom screen
Sure can.
Can do things like have a checklist spreadsheet open for games with collectables and stuff too.
one of those third party botw/totk maps on the bottom and botw/totk on the top
for tracking down all those damn koroks
Yeah, even if you're not religiously tracking them all down it's nice being able to check off the ones you naturally come across.
Lord knows it's a nightmare if you decide you want to find everything after the fact and following a guide means retracing a bunch of spots already found.
Does anyone know if the bottom screen can be set to be a dedicated keyboard?
That is an idea they were working on but atm haven't been able to get
I’m real tempted but am concerned about a few aspects, gonna pay attention to how the launch goes for sure
If it gets a keyboard bottom screen I'm gonna install outlook on it to write emails on commute
so are we getting tariff on this?
Yeah, I am not looking forward to finding out lol. I know I could contact support and they could switch me to 4px who apparently gets around it. But alas, I am impatient.
My wife ships stuff from china to our house all the time in very large 20+lb boxes.
She has been using a small independent Chinese company who is known to not necessarily follow all the rules. She’s yet to get a duties bill anywhere so I imagine they are using the same tricks as 4px.
It's weird because my order is set to 4px without me asking for it when I look at my order details
I'm not complaining. But thought it was weird lol
As far as I remember DHL and 4px are the only options. Did you pay extra for DHL?
No. DHL will stick it to you if they can. I just remembered people talking about other options being used by default and you could ask them to switch to 4px. Back when it first went live.
Can't remember the option. I never noticed it listed until I changed from purple to black
Not to sound like a shill, but are you calling the act of following the law "sticking it to you"? Lmao
Kind of? I honestly don't mind paying the tariffs. It's the price you willingly signed up for when ordering. Was more using verbage other people like to talk about when circumventing the extra fees. 🍻
I don't like DHL because they suck in every experience I've had with them in the US.
USPS does a better job delivering to me than DHL
What if the law is lame though

Lame or not, they can still legally take your shit if somebody doesn't obey along the chain
4px and Yunexpress haven't let me down yet
I just realised that we can use the Thor to play games on the top screen while drooling over videos of the next handheld we don't need on the bottom screen... My wallet will hate me
maximum brain rot
family guy clips on top screen + subway surfers gameplay on bottom screen
Consume product while getting excited for next product
Play a movie on the top screen while playing the movie tie-in game on the bottom screen
Genius!
Play Total Recall on NES such that the cutscenes are synchronised with the movie playing on the other screen
Boston Handheld Party
WTF are you even talking about. We have never said we wouldn’t support dual screen devices. And I have contacted Nicole over a month ago about the Thor. Why would put her on blast in a public place. Stop spreading BS.
It sounds like you (and your team?) are dealing with a lot rn, hope you're all doing well.
I mean. In this space. People just wildly speculating. Not great.
I don’t even know what prudence is going on about. I can’t support a device that I don’t have and I don’t plan on buying one. We do this for free. It’s actually a net loss because I pay for things like URLs and hosting space and have never asked for a single donation and people are out here calling us petty because we don’t want to support a device. Good grief.
upcoming channels can be rather all over the place when people are waiting for things to happen
I wonder how hard it is to make a os for a duel screens devise given they have often been rare
Maybe I just misremembered thing but I for sure totally remember someone related to CFWs being g ultra apprehensive and mea when it was just RDS .... with complete 180 happening after aya
Ita also always written word ... so the intended tone is often lost
So I. Might have misinterpreted the tone of those old comments I vaguely remembered.
And I may have misinterpreted the current rant that was posted here as what was posted here sounded a lot like "revieeers got it and we dont , lets rile up shit and people stop bothering us" .... which might have not been the intended tone
FOSS devs don’t owe us anything, so yeah, if they decide not to support a device because they’re not personally interested in it enough to spend their own money on it, then decide to support it after a company offers to send them free devices to develop on, that’s beyond fair
Of course
I don't expect then to , I was always reacting to rant screenshot that was posted here ... which I guess I misinterpreted
but also these companies should absolutely prioritize sending free devices to OS devs over reviewers, imo
tbh thats interesting though experiment .... imagining yourself from a PoV of such company oth domestically and internationally
especially looking at how rare its them even passively suporting it - let alone actively , some ar nowadays even acively working against it
While I appreciate and enjoy custom options it's a bit crazy to say they should prioritize shipping to devs, on an android handheld, before reviewers. Few people utilize cfw on an android device but lots of people make their purchase decisions based on reviews. Yup...you're crazy lol.
Most people will still keep their Thor on Android, and even for those that are interested in playing with rocknix/Linux or dual boot, I doubt majority are rushing to use it day 1.
Personally, I will only convert my o2 to rocknix after the o3 arrives.
And last I tried with a RGB10 max 3 pro, configuration for emulators especially trying to do real time/in game changes is still a pain/impossible in rocknix.
Not sure how easy/hard it will be to mess with layout changes etc in azahar in rocknix now, plus no switch emulation (at least out of the box).
Not sure how other uses for dual screen (playing videos, surfing guides while playing a game) will work out in rocknix as well.
Is there even a complete build for rocknix on O2 with things working as they should? I dont keep up with it really
Getting units to reviewers first, and sending (if) developers finalised hardware after shipping officially starts is still a better choice.
Agreed. Reviewers drive way more sales.
I love Spruce and greatly respect Linux devs, but this is a certified nerdass moment if you think that Linux is better than stock Android OSes for high-end devices to the Average Joe
time to open the door and feel some concrete
Depends on what you want to do honestly
If you like to play some pc ports, port master is not on android (understandably)
well android has better pc port options now
Having used some form of Linux on two different handhelds now, and tinkering with my old Android phone for emulation, I much prefer Android personally.
Sleep mode is way better, but also it's been a lil easier for me to set-up and tinker with with just being able to connect the device itself through USB-C to add games and stuff (not that much easier)
i like linux better strictly for retro, they're neat toys
What pc port software is on Android that doesn’t run a layer of windows underneath it and require a big power draw with lots of ram?
what pc port software on linux has steam cloud saves? (don't say steamos 😭 )
you can move the goal posts in both ways
i'd say for most people gamehub/gamenative is more enticing than portmaster
Gamehub/Gamenative is getting better by the minute as well
i'm waiting for gamenative to be a bit more compatible before i take the plunge, still not that comfortable with gamehub
I use Protonmail, so if needbe, I could always make an alias and have that forwarded to my main email for Gamehub to protect my data further, but personally more interested in using Gamenative
None of them has gog integration right?
If port master or someone else figured that out 😮💨
I am not knowledgeable enough to know if people can figure out ports without winlator
Similar to how proton works
But on Android
Any reason for game native > game hub?
Wonder if gamehub will ever support epic games and gog, I have a mountain of games on there I want to play
is Gamenative not ready yet?
it works, but compatibility is low still
i haven't tried it for myself though
That’s what I’m saying!
if that was reaction to me i am even more confused as i never said they should support what they dont have
We know you got hungry and ate the Thor. It's ok.
Someone needs to make one of those horrific ai vids where Stubbs just eats handhelds
where's @grand spoke
A Sora vid lol
do anyone know if thor can support 1.5tb micro sd?
It should. Don't know for sure.
Yes it does
good then, here it's almost the same price as of 1tb ones
nah Stubbs needs to actually make that vid
will any channels be able to review the grip early or is that coming with/after everyone’s orders?
i’m so tempted to upgrade from my Retroid Mini to this instead of a 16:9 handheld, but the ergo looks like a red flag for me (3DS, even Xl, is the system i never play bc hand cramps)
i thought i had my forever handheld but Winlator with steam cloud finally made widescreen games more appealing to me
You haven't watched Russ' first impressions video? He has the grip
ooo missed that bit
😬
oof that trigger reach still seems gnarly
really gonna depend on the size of your hands
i think Russ’ impressions have tracked pretty well with my experience before
experience with?
a couple anbernics, trimui brick, retroid mini
anyway i really like the JCSFY grip for the Mini so maybe i should keep an eye out for if/when someone bulks up the back instead of the sides for this device’s ergo
I got the accessory pack so I’ll post the grip here when it ships
When will they start dispatching units ?
Mid-October if there's no delays
What youtube setup guide do you guys plan on using for your Thor? I used Russ' RP5 setup guide for my RP5 but I think a lot of the emulators have changed, and with the dual screen stuff.. I think I need to find a more up to date guide.
I mean, I already know how to set up Android. What do you expect to be different?
You might need to go Azahar and MelonDS for 3/DS but the rest should be fine.
do I need more than the base model? Kinda think I might order a base model
Depends what you want to use it for but generally the base should be good for most things
mostly just playing gotm games lol -- I have a decentish pc, would probably just moonlight anything that didn't run
Fair enough. The base is probably plenty for you
I'm plenty happy with my RG556 besides the fact I got a faulty screen or something (the brightness is insanely high and cannot be fixed with settings, like even lowest brightness + extra dimming is kinda washed out) so the thor should be a significant increase and make me happy I think, mostly worried about ergo, definitely would get a grip
hmmm looking into the tariff situation and seems like I'd probably get hit for it on top of the posted price, not sure if worth
looks like a great device but I might wait and get one secondhand or at least I can order locally

It’s awesome that you are doing active development for melonDS! One item of my wishlist is RA leaderboard support which was planned but haven’t been worked on for 2 years from what I gathered on a GitHub PR. Are you planning to work on that?
I could try!
4PX?
Ok no tariff charge from DHL on my Thor
Lame part is I just landed in New York and Thor just landed at my house in Oregon. Will mess with it when I get home Wednesday
new york isnt going anywhere, thor (hinge) is ephemeral. Fly home now
Too late hinge broke
thor hinge vs hydraulic press
Thor hinge vs tortilla press
the mexican sku
Ugh. I was waiting until later in the month to order one but I have zero idea what the tariff situation is
In fairness, nobody has any idea what the situation is day to day.
Even the people who work there
Thanks for the update. Let's hope it stays that way as long as possible, haha.
Dang this is how I ended up with the Pocket Classic. Panic buy hoping to avoid tariffs 😅
Dang, how much?
thor shipping?
$0 😆
I think AYN prepays import fees on review unit shipments. I've never got import fees from them using DHL either... But every other dhl shipment I get has import fees.
They must have covered it, yeah. Not sure if it's the same for all shipments, but, will take the wins where possible these days. 😆
Hoping so, will see with my retail unit
Good to see you guys get a win in shipping
Yeah the Anbernic ones almost every time
You get import on anbernic units?
Yeah when they send dhl
Just ordered my Thor, i live in the UK and even after watching Russ' video i'm struggling to find one of the mesh stylus' that are small. Anyone else in the UK got one ordered yet ?
I've found Aliexpress has a few decent looking fiber tip styluses that ship to the UK
You wanna search for "fiber" stylus rather than mesh. I don't think there's any ones that are small tho, all seem to be around the same size. I quite like the look of these, looks like the larger end is the same size as the switch stylus, and then it has a smaller end which presumably will be more precise https://amzn.eu/d/bbZ3ZZz
Im in the UK. I got the switch stylus from amazon. Cost me about £17
which one did you land on?
I wonder if anyone else was looking for a tip that could replace their Apple Pencil to work on the Thor
This is the one I got
https://amzn.eu/d/hzxpykI
The Nintendo Switch Touch Pen is the official stylus accessory for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite. It has been specially developed for capacitive touch screen operation and offers high precision and comfortable handling. The pen is perfect for games that require precise touch input,...
At that point, why? The tip isn't what makes the apple pencil work.
I’ve recently switched mediums from digital to analog (paper + pencil) so I’ve been using the Apple Pencil significantly less. I like the form factor a lot though and the Apple Pencil’s sturdiness.
I’m not too hung up on it - I have the switch stylus in my cart. Just thought I’d do some research beforehand
Over 18k comments, sweet Jesus😲 trying to talk myself out of replacing my 477M with this but it has almost everything I wanted in a handheld🥹, I guess it’s better if I wait until regular folk actually have it in their hand and test it for a while
If never seen the “worry free purchase” option with any other shipping? You shouldn’t be responsible anyway if it gets damaged or lost/stolen during shipping🤨
i feel like they compliment eachother nicely, 477m will be better for dpad focused & 4:3 games
Just remove it. It's Shopify trying to scam you out of a few dollars
On Ayn’s site I was not able to remove it (would get added back in). Also - I’ve never seen this on any other Shopify store
Would reckon it’s Ayn not Shopify trying to up the average order value
Hmm I just tried the latest melonds nightly on my old phone. Cutscene animations are super laggy now. Save states on nightly version I had in September no longer work on the new version. It would be a headache for me to transfer my ds games progress to the Thor after I get it.
Rule of thumb is to transfer game saves not states. States are often times dependent to the specific device
The money doesn't go to AYN. It goes to a company called Seel. I left it on when I ordered my Thor, but ended up cancelling it
Seel send you an email and you can cancel within 24 hours
That's crap that you can't remove it from your basket tho. Maybe you can if you go further along the checkout process
Oh yea I think it’s a scam as well but I wasn’t able to remove it
I ordered from the website and never got an email outside of Ayn
Oops
I … stand corrected?
That's true but the savestates have been quite stable since melonds android port had opengl renderer until this latest version that supports external screen.
I copied YS to my 8 elite phone and the audio is completely bugged. I am reverting to older nightly
The scammy protection did not end up in the receipt
Oh nice, it got removed at checkout?
Yea I guess I successfully removed it before checking out
Hmm yea can’t help you there I’ve never successfully ported save states across devices
Make sure to report it on the github.
At least the audio thing.
Any word on US tarrifs apply to this device?
They apply to everything no?
Stubbs has had to pay tariffs on review units from Anbernic: #1407322274071314492 message
so far that only applies to dhl, 4px & other chinese couriers have been dodging them, tho obviously that could change at any time
How much are the tariffs on the device?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Nobody knows. Even the ones who tabulate the tariffs.
In theory, 37.5%
But everything is Calvinball so you find out when you get the bill.
So much winning.
I'm pretty tired of it at this point
All just to make tax cuts for the rich permanent... Hooray
I suppose I'll just wait to see what people report when it starts arriving 🤔
Yeah. Probably best way. Tho if you order, could be months before it ships, and be totally different than hen
Oh I thought they were shipping mid October?
they start shipping mid october, anybody's guess when they'll finish shipping
I mean it's possible they somehow send out a few thousand units in a matter of a couple weeks, but I for one would be shocked
Oh dang, has it taken them that long in the past? Sorry, I'm new to AYN products. Retroid and Anbernic pre-orders I've done gotten in the past tend to ship and arrive within a few weeks
might be that fast?
I know my Flip 2 took about a week from order to shipping, and then another week or so to arrive
I assume if that's their timeframe on orders of in-stock units, preorders will take even longer once they start shipping, but maybe I'm just overly pessimistic
though maybe Ayn is better than Retroid in that regard? no clue tbh
They're both Moorechip though, right?
ya
So probably same for both. And I know my RP5 took quite some time to ship after they started shipping preorders 🙁
If we get hit with a 37.5% tariff can we refuse the package? 🤣
Once AYN get rolling they ship orders pretty fast
Sure but they're not going to refund you
Plan on up to 50% extra and hope for the best.
yeah think I'll just wait and maybe pay a reseller markup just to not have to import and worry about surprised tariffs
oh my
Looks like it’s up now
joey being one of the first western (if not the first) to get a thor has got to be one of the biggest boons for his channel ever

wow
That’s so good
Already got mine pre ordered
Joeys review made me realise this device being clamshell makes it more delicate
Not only do you need to be careful about hinge crack. But the gap has flex where too much pressure can damage the screen. You also have the 2 stoppers at the bottom against the top of the screen when closed. Finally Joey sbowed sometimes when you close the device doesnt sleep so there is a risk you have a device overheating in your pocket
I just hope someone can make a software solution to try to cap 80% charge
to minimize battery cycle wear
don't care if it only works with the device on tbh but it's something to preserve that battery life
Is this the Color grip I should be getting with the rainbow colour way?
looks like it
holy shit, beating out the Switch at Switch battery life lmao
what about battery life for iiSU?
i have been kinda thinking if its worth to upgrade to pro or not 😄
as an owner of O2P pro
I went straight to the max for the 1tb of internal storage. 16gb of ram is a nice bonus for playing steam games
i mean i am fairly certain base will be enough for my use ... already got Thor romset prepared on my 512gb sd , and dont really plan to play x86 emu , nor android stuff ... mostly just nds/3ds and pokemon across all platforms
there is just htis little itching
That's the grip I went with as well for rainbow
also it's insane how much the battery life improves from halving the display brightness, wow
not bad
Super hyped for mine. I already knew the compromises with this being a clamshell but thats fine by me. Theres no deal breakers that I can see
Considering everyone should've already known the delicacies involved in a clamshell handheld, I have no issues with my Thor order and am hyped for it
I preordered a month ago on a whim (which I rarely ever do), getting more excited with every new piece of information coming out
Joey playing BOTW and Old School Runescape at the same time had me lol
I went gray
Have a second game ready for long cutscenes and such, good idea lol
stream Death Stranding on the top screen and play Pokemon on the bottom screen while the movie: the game does its thing on the top screen
Id say this one is a bit more delicate than other clamshells simply because the gap has more flex and the.bumpers being against the screen and unreliable sleep when closing lid. If you compare say against a DSi or RG35XXSP this would be more delicate so I wouldn't categorise all clamshells being the same when it comes to protection
So it has the same flexibility as a New 3DS XL
Cause between my DS systems, the New 3DS XL units have a bit more movement to them
if I'm being so honest the Thor is just barely too big for what I want overall but it's a good compromise
ideally a device of that power would have a 4.5" or 5" top screen and 3.5" or so bottom
okay joey's review was real fun and confirmed I'm good to wait until the second gen (or a resale if hinges turn out ok)
is there a thread in here for the Retroid dual screen attachment? I think I'm now in the market for one
thanks!
yeah that's the way I see it as well, clamshells make compromises, if you are into clamshells you already know the sorts of compromises you are getting
I ordered some screen protectors from AYN via 4px on september 30th ..still waiting
there has been golden week holiday in china that ends tomorrow
so not really surprising
just blow up the top screen man, don't be a mad man and play like this
it shipped before that though
surprising then 😄
maybe it still had an effect
likely yeah
but just for Data
not a very high bar to clear tbh
My PayPal balance was in the negative so I had to re-up it but now I have to wait like 10 days for my PayPal balance readjust before I can order the Thor 😭
2 months from now
fr?
Maybe? I mean people bought a shitload
Probably depends on config and color
But we're not gonna know til they start shipping
true
Will *start shipping in Oct
I've never ordered from Ayn in the past but this must be a popular product
whoa, hidden has a discord? fire
Yea! Some good people in there
fair, maybe ill buy one from someone who doesnt want theirs lol
super jelly
love hidden
unless reviewers find major flaws, but it doesn't look like that's the case
otherwise I see no reason why AYN can't proceed
im gonna pass on ordering one out of fear itll take 2 months and just wait to see if someone will sell me theirs in oct lol
How do does the speaker volume and rumble compare to the Anbernic R477m? I guess even trigger buttons on the Thor would be an improvement over the inline ones on the 477. They seem the same weight wise.
Anyone know if anything like a community resource for games that have HD texture packs exists?
I usually just goggle and go with whatever seems to be the most popular packs, but having a site with recommended ones for various systems would def be great.
Yy, with the Thor on the way, 3DS texture packs are gonna be so crisp
The question for me is if 125GB is enough depending on how many good HD packs there are. There weren’t as many for GC as I thought there’d be.
Depends on the system. Half of them can run from SD, half can't.
PS2, GCN and Wii have to be internal.
Thats good to know. I think even if I went with the 250GB I’d still stick to black for seamless borders.
the legend of zelda twilight princess has a pretty decent hd pack you can get
I played that recently, it's pretty nice overall
I can see people on Etsy doing a slimmer grip case where it doesn’t protrude on the sides. I have one of those on my 477 and it still feels much more ergonomic.
yeah still cant decide if i should push up to the Pro from my Base order
the other question si if it would push me back in the shipping order
$299 is def gonna be the most popular one, after launch it’s gonna be $10 more?
Is it hard to setup game and watch emulation with dual screen on Android?
Like pretty sure that for my needs (nds/3s/switchpokemon) base is enough
Can’t imagine Switch Pokemon running well when it doesn’t even do that on the Switch.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with all dlc would be great though I hope. I know there are some fps dips.
it was quite doable on O2 when i tried , but that one was 12gb one
and yeah Sc/Vi runs 20fps even on switch
Quite a few Switch games run better on a powerful enough PC than they do on an actual Switch
No idea if that translates over to something like the Thor though
I need to see if the windwaker hd pack is better than playing the cemu version of windwaker
Definitely. Dolphin is one of the most optimized emulators while Cemu is still comparatively new.
I play the hd pack now I just don't have anything to compare it to, but if you say so I believe it. Dolphin is a fantastic emulator
Also there's something to be said about the app not crashing acting weird being better than some visual differences
I wonder how Switch Rhythm games like Theatrhythm Final Bar Line run and how much lag it adds.
In general I wouldn't say so
But on a handheld yea Cemu isn't there yet
i played through most of sword on my odin 2
I played through it all on my Portal and then used my Odin 2 mini to trade pokemon between sword and shield 😅
Alright, I did it. I picked up a max 🤦♂️
The ram is probably way overkill but the storage is nice
Lol , kinds why I wanna do the QoL hacks/mods so I don't have to do that
they are good mods out there 😄
Yeah been playing Lumi on swoled and it's been pretty nice
I JUST ORDERED THE THOR PRO MODEL LETS GOOOOOOO
How long does 4px shipping to Europe usually take?
And will there be additional import costs?
I'm salivating as I type
This is like the dream scenario of what a 3ds emulation handheld should look like. It seems like a concept design more than a real thing
But then it's actually real. It's been in people's hands. The software magically just works the way you want it to (for the most part) and the battery life is inexplicably great
Two weeks
Nah, with DHL you would, but no worries with our beloved 4PX
Awesome, thanks!
I used to have snarky remarks about people pre-ordering the Thor being beta testers for the hinge and software and yet here I am
I mean they’ve shipped like 4-5 consoles by now and their latest is a fan favorite
That’s how I look at it
How quick are they usually with software updates? I hope better than Anbernic…
Yeah I do trust them as a company but the fact that they had zero reassuring statements about the hinge is a little worrying
well, let us know how the beta test goes :p really does seem like maybe the last device I'd need for awhile
how's the input lag looking?
Pretty OK when running at 120 Hz. The 3DS emulators still have some work to do on that front though
is it something that can be fixed or is it just something they will have
That part I'm not sure about. There has been a lot of DS/3DS emulator development lately so maybe we'll see improvements over time
Have any of the reviews complained about the weird bottom screen width (1240 instead of 1280) or is it just not an issue?
Same screen as the RP Mini V2 and it still looks great for 4:3 content even if it is a tiny bit stretched so I don't think it's an issue
It's an oled
On the black model, you really won't notice it if you just center the screen
was there a stylus included in the accessories pack?
No.
I ended up getting the Nintendo one
are you guys gonna attach the stylus to the thor/case somehow? or just keep separate
The latter, unless there’s an easy solution to include or attach the stylus to the case
Most games I care about don't use the stylus so I'll just leave it in the case
Like hinge strength wasn't part of the marketing?
Not necessarily marketing but a lot of people had worries about this being the same hinge as the Flip 2 and one small remark like "custom made hinge designed for The Thor" would have alleviated a lot of those worries without even having to promise that it will never break
Aaah
They still are tbh
At least for the hinge
It's probably the same hinge 😅 But maybe they learned some stuff!
We shall see. And it's got a one year warranty 🤷♂️
Yeah, fortunately Ayn customer service seems pretty good
Yup I'm aware that I am but I am going to baby the fuck out of this device and close the hinge carefully and not from the sides
always
That's good to hear
I'm considering some foam to fill in that gap
Why?
My wife's old DSi still has a perfectly functioning hinge. Idk how Nintendo does it
Just so everything's not pressing on that one pressure point while closed in my bag
It'd be in a case but still
A regular 3ds had the gap tho
A regular 3ds isn't as bendy as this thing is
Also probably totally unnecessary
I just want to treat it like a child
A small fragile dual screen child
Thor has a bigger one and there's quite a bit of bend to it when it's closed and you push against it. I'm gonna be careful with throwing it in a bag when there's other things in there that could push against it
Keeping it separate, I actually got it to not touch the screens so much and leave finger prints.
Throw it in a case, problem solved.
I figure once I set it up for quick travel I’ll play games that only require controllers. At home or long trips it’ll be in the same bag as the Thor will be in
Don’t put in your back pocket lol
Yeah hope they fix the flex on top
While yes, I'm not quite convinced that adding foam won't mess with the hinge. Since it won't be "fully" closed now
True I didn't get the case yet cause idk how much I'm going to use the grip but I will definitely get one as soon as I do
I had my childhood Gameboy Advance SP up until this year and that hinge worked great even this year
Oh I wouldn't toss something crazy thick in
Not going to jam packing peanuts in there
You can find generic cases or maybe a Flip 2 case would work. Aliexpress has tons of non branded cases and im sure something will work with the Thor
Ayn has a case for the grip
FYI
Yea they have an accessories pack for everything too
Yeah I grabbed the case
I am going to sell whatever I don’t use from the accessories pack
I bought the accessories pack myself
I'm gonna use the transparent case
I know but if I never use the grip then I would rather have the smaller case. Once I make a decision on that I will buy a case
Not going to try to profit I just know some things I won’t use
Ill probably won't use the grip tho
I feel you. That’s why I bought the pack 😂
Grip is going to do wonders for dual stick gaming, not necessary apart from that
I'm going to play more DS games than 3ds so I'm thinking it's useful for making DPAD gaming more comfortable
But I have small hands so maybe I don't even need it
It definitely makes the thing uglier but it was cheap enough that I was like fuck it, I'll give it a try
I got the grip and grip case. I figure it'll still work decently even if I decide to not use the grip sometimes
10-15 days
I usually never buy grips. The Odin 2 Mini one makes the device look ugly as sin
This one is not as bad if the colours match right

I like the fact that we have the option to use a grip rather than having grips molded to the plastic.
To me the point of the grip is you’re at home / on a flight and at this point the looks of device is of no importance. Especially when you spend the time looking at the screen
I agree the grips make devices look uglier
joey's thor review is reassuring
it gave me more worries than anything
true that, not sure how I'm feeling about the shoulder buttons now
Why?
triggers, chassis flex
I am a bit worried about sticky buttons actually, haha
and especially the hinge angles
I dont sit on my consoles so that isnt a problem for me and the hinge angles are personal preference. I didn't see anything to worry me in the review
Yeah I think it will be alright for me but I see how it could be annoying
i don't sit on my devices either but that flex is worrying, i do put them in bags
Unless you wedge something in the middle of the top screen amd apply a lot of pressure (which would be weird) then I dont think its an issue
take into account the whole lid rests on just two points with noticeable space in between, if there's a device to worry about flex it's this one
if i can't just clam my clam and forget it's a bit of a dealbreaker
Ooh, you could even 3d print something that's exactly the right size with felt on either side
It comes with one already in the packaging so people could just keep that 😅
i won't just forget about any device over 300 bucks but you know, i'm already worried about the build
Double check the AYN uboxing video
I will! Thanks
Maybe what's there would be sufficient for you
My friend’s 3d printer will do the job
But i mean, the flex was obvious. A bit naive to just put it inside a FILLED backpack
Aaah can’t wait to play megaman battle network 🙂↕️
i wanna play ace attorney the way it was meant to be played
and a whole 3ds library i never played
I think most of us knew about the trigger situation going in just by looking at them. I'm hoping for a 3D printed solution or maybe something 3rd party that makes it easier to use
I got one from etsy it feels great looks good too
Hopefully so those always fall off tho
Something universal that can add more grip or comfort. There has to be something out there
I'm not too worried about the triggers as my use case won't involve them much but I can see this being a problem for more modern games
Oh hell yeah
Get five running on this in 8x or whatever
Thor is going to be my New New 2DS XL lol
Can’t wait to run those 2D sprite-based games at 8x resolution
I’m also very fond to starforce leo/pegasus which went 3D. At the time it was incredible
The remakes are much easier to save/load though 😂
what about save states?
I have a fun story about the great attorney 1. I played the 3ds version and I found it annoying to move the camera around with either the circular pad or the stylus. So during the inspection of one case I felt lazy and only did a quick a look at the evidence. Then there was a plot twist that costantly made me question my sanity and I had a great time because of the twist. Then my wife played the remake version. Camera movement was smooth and optimized. She looked at every detail very carefully and didn't get the emotional shock I had at all.
it was designed with the limited tech in mind at the time
which twist was it?
Whether or not the evidence was tempered with
The first British case
is that the first case with edgeworth?
No I was talking about the great ace attorney
It seems like 3ds emulation is more demanding than I blindly assumed
First case with Barok van Zieks
Most games run well but more games are having some slowdown and sound issues than I though
thought
The slowdown is just shader compilation
The sound'll stutter when shaders compile too due to the slowdown
It only happens the first time something new happens in-game, once the shaders are compiled, it'll be smooth
theres no sound stretching?
There were some games having consistent sound stuttering like Inazuma Eleven
I’m more worried about Wii U compatibility. It maybe be the emulator itself
Wii U emulation is still in its infancy on Android
A lot of games don't run well
Or even crash
Yeah thats a bummer. Thor would be close to perfect if we had better Wii U emulation. Hopefully it gets better with time
Thor will likely motivate teams to get it right
At least we have Switch emulation which is much better than Wii U emulation right now
Idk much about emulation but if we could get it to the point where it pre-compiles the shaders like Dolphin does, that would be great
I hope so. I would sell my modded Wii U when that happens lol
Ah yeah. He did mention in his review video (uploaded after that 3DS showcase) that some people told him fixes for the games that didn't work. Might be worth checking the comments to see which ones have fixes.
Wasn’t he upscaling many of those games though?
Stella Glow is the game I wanna revisit the most on the Thor and it seemed to not look right for Joey, so I'm hoping there's a fix for that
You would want to upscale the games on such a high resolution display. Otherwise they look like crap
Oh definitely… people should be informed though that the base 865 is prob not meant for upscaled
It should have enough power to do that as well. It just seems the emulators aren't as developed as I thought
But to your point Joey had the pro version I believe
He has the pro model
Yup
man I'm still so sad because of that
tbh 865 can upscale bunch too just not as much as sd8g2 can
I guess the DS versions are gonna have to do
ds version for 3 is japanese ._.
there's not a patch either
I luckily play most games with sound off
you can't even get ''romantical'' with it
There is. I had the English patch on my old Dsi years ago and played it all the way through. It was not completely translated when it came to all of the story but the game was playable
And back then I was a die hard who had already watched that season of the anime so it wasn't hard to follow
I wonder if that patch got more development since
it in fact did not
Lol that's a shame
because there was a translated 3ds version
https://gbatemp.net/threads/60-fps-patches-cheat-codes-releases-and-discussion.550527/
Maybe one of these 30fps/60fps patches could help Inazuma Eleven on 3DS
Here we can share or talk about 60 FPS Patches/Cheat Codes. I will be posting the cheat codes here and I will credit whoever made them. If you have a 60 FPS Patches/Cheat Codes, feel free to post them here and I will post them here on the list and I will credit you.
Nov. 2, 2020 - Thanks...
I think it has to do with the fact that they aren't proper 3ds games but ds ports that were e-shop download exclusives
kind of like widescreen hacked ds games that just happened to play on the 3ds
Call me crazy, but the frontend using both screens seems like a downgrade to me. I'd rather just have Daijisho or ES-DE on the top screen and access to Android on the bottom
You're crazy 😄
I mean, after watching the video, where's the benefit?
Cohesive with seemingly reduced functionality. So, again, where's the benefit?
it looks pretty, that's it
I go as far as I can to be not reminded that it's android
The less I see an os the better
If I have to sacrifice some functionality so be it
I've been waiting forever for someone with actual design chops to make a launcher
Don't get me wrong, I welcome DS frontend development and I hope it eventually turns into something amazing, but it's obviously very early in development and a long way away from being better than the alternatives
Like I don't want to see a traditional android os period
Same thing with like the file manager on Linux cfw to edit stuff
I shouldn't have to leave the experience
Like I get it, it's early and wip
But the end goal for what I want is what I said before
Their proof of concept video is great. I think it'd be a worthwhile trade-off when it's further along for sure
I'm keeping an eye on it anyway
I'm not saying at this moment, iisu is better
Idk, Android is fine, I prefer a nice frontend too, but I'm getting that on the top screen, and the vertically scrolling app tiles on the bottom screen don't bother me at all. I'm mostly going to be sticking a web browser down there when not in dual screen games anyway
What I've seen in that video seems to be heading in the wrong direction. It's basically unecessarily spreading/duplicating elements across the top and bottom screens. I want something that leverages the advantages of 2 screens, which a traditional frontend on the top and android on the bottom seemingly does better atm.
I'm not a hater, I want them to succeed and create something amazing, but that preview isn't it
Oh I hella love the 3ds ui aesthetic with the icons on top and bottom
If you mean that
That part I've been waiting forever for
I'm not talking about aesthetic, I'm talking about functionality
To each their own but I don't want the butt ugly Android home menu anywhere. Just give me a sleek looking launcher with an option to see all of my Android apps in a separate tab when I need to like on Beacon Launcher. It's the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality
Mostly same for me. I think Emustation sacrifices too much functionality and it makes it feel limited when you try to do anything Android related. I prefer Beacon Launcher for that reason
Like sure I want to be able to open a video on top while playing a game etc
But the moment to moment aesthetics are just as important for me
The devs are capable of creating the best of both worlds, it's not a case of one or the other, but for me functionality should always come first. You can always pretty it up after
and keep in mind that a lot of the DS UI was dictated by there only being 1 touch screen, these devices have 2, so the DS solution won't be the best solution for these new devices
Well yea
Tho to be honest
Unless I need to
I rather not ever touch the top screen
Mostly cause of the hinge
No idea how the Thor will be with that
Russ covered it a little in his preview video. Nothing definitive, but according to him, the Thor seems to be using the redesigned Flip 2 hinge. I don't know how reliable that is, but I haven't heard of widespread problems with the updated Flip 2 hinge yet
I mostly meant I don't feel comfortable pushing against the screen to touch when it's upright
At least I don't think I will be
Like I kinda really didn't like doing it on the RP flip
You're going to be putting a lot less stress on the hinge just lightly tapping on the screen than you would be closing the device, but only time will tell how the hinge holds up
If you just keep the Thor Control Center up (or another app/browser/whatever) on the bottom screen you can kind of keep a cohesive look.
Especially if you get a frontend skin that matches the aesthetic.
That way you can maintain easy access to Android at the tap of a button while benefiting from a dedicated frontend on the top screen.
Some people are not okay with fine
It'd be neat if they opened up the control center to custom themes
Would be a good placeholder until iiSU is out
Or eventually integrate tcc into iiSU
I know it’s two separate parties just ideas
I don't want to belabour the point, but using immature software with limited functionality for aesthetic reasons is being okay with "fine."
My concern, and why I replied to the preview video, is it doesn't look like the devs are taking true advantage of the dual screens (yet). The UI they showcased was (imo) worse than the alternative of using a dedicated frontend on the top screen, and having access to the android app tiles on the bottom screen
I'm so glad this exists:
Compatibility list for Winlator/GameNative : r/EmulationOnAndroid https://share.google/KKKMXW4nH5tFDGNFr
this should be pinned in every channel honestly lmao
worth noting that https://www.emuready.com/ also collects Winlator/game native/gamehub feedback
How quick are they usually with software updates? I hope better than Anbernic…
depends what kind of update. my odins had a few OTA updates but still running android 13 with a security update from may 2023
i expect some as they iron out kinks with the new form factor and control center but major developments post-launch seem unlikely
Android 13 means you can use syncthing with GC and PS2 saves right? My 477 on 14 can’t because it restricts root access which sucks.
they are good
you can usually count on AYN to fix software issues eventually
idk I don't use syncthing. Been meaning to set it up but if it won't work on my 477m i doubt i'll bother now
No I mean later android OS restricts access to root folders so syncing files with stored there isn’t possible, only if it’s on memory card.
Dolphin and the PS2 emulator stores saves in root directory with no option to change it which is pretty dumb.
I don't think you can. It's limited since 12 I believe.
You can do it by exporting/importing inside the emulator for PS2. It's not ideal.
I realize now I've never looked into syncing dolphin.
Syncing dolphin is doable. I have it set up on my android 11 phone
On the new phone i sync into a folder under documents and manually copy the save files back and forth the dolphin folder
with the other odin 2 devices you were able to syncthing deeper for ps2
not sure how it works with the thor
did joey cover that in his video? i didnt finish it
you can also do very convoluted work arounds by using two separate syncing programs
since it's (at least for me) too much hassle to swap my entire syncthing ecosystem over to something else
i do it specifically for ps2 on my Ace and it works
If you follow joeys guide on syncthing he tells you how to sync all that data without root;
FolderSync was the name of the other one
His guides are actually solid if people would get beyond his reviews lol
i agree yeah, i used his initially for that
he was also the only one i ever saw address that floating icon transparency
Just have to use the web portal to set it up and it syncs app data you normally cant sync
super easy
sweet, i'll keep that in mind
honestly personally i don't really care about like frontends or making menus pretty but folderscync sounds verry usefull to me
i prefer syncthing but FolderSync definitely works if you want to try it out
just any sync thing is good
the idea of playing games and just pick them up on another handheld is very appealing to me .
once you get it going, it's a super elegant solution
i have it between my desktop and my android handhelds
not a huge fan of it on linux because i can never tell when it's fully done by iirc quite a while back MuOS implemented a syncthing wait feature?
to check if saves were all done before you go into a game
I use both FolderSync and Syncthing but for savegames I definitely prefer Syncthing
Do you have a link to that perchance?
I guess FolderSync makes sense for large rom collections to have changes sync overnight
i can try to pull that up one sec
it's a small list as #2 but he does actually mention it, i missed it here
"Use Web GUI to add syncs, do not use the app UI – it will not work for Android/data. "
If you go to joeys website he has tons of great guides. Honestly everyone should have his site bookmarked
so im gonna go check if that'll fix my ps2 issue for my Ace real quick
He covers stuff other people don't
That's how I did it. web gui, it works great
funny enough i think i vaguely remember doing that before for a different handheld
i think im losing my touch 😅
i appreciate the heads up, though really
better late than never
i was asking around and only person i could find for the Ace specifically mentioned FolderSync, that's why i went that route
Cool thanks! I have syncthing setup between my Steam Deck and various Anbernic devices for RetroArch
looks like it gives me a permission denied, is it because it needed the superuser permissions? i remember not being able to get that root script working so i figure that probably did it
gonna check this one out just in case

Hmm. I didn't get denied
And don't have root
And maybe the version of Android was different 🤷🏻♂️
no worries, it seems like it's an easy oversight as far as the rooting thing
i was missing drivers this entire time
so it wouldnt show up under fastboot
this should get it fixed up to work
that did the trick
properly synced up

had to remake the .stfolder myself so that was another speedbump but yea it properly works now
no permission issues and all that anymore
oh right that means i can fix up switch, too
I wonder if you could share your own shaders between yourself
That is as important as the game saves imo
i think so, you can basically sync anything
some people even sync their roms between themselves but i tend not to go that far
for the systems with really small file sizes it probably couldn't hurt, though
Will 3DS still stutter on this?
It shouldn't, at least for a large amount of the library
If I navigate on the top screen do I also have to type everything on that instate of the bottom one?
Shader compilation will cause stuttering, thereafter most games should run well. You can see this in either Joey or Wulff's live first impressions
turning on asynchronous shader compilation helps a lot with that
It helps a little, but it still causes stuttering, and async shader compilation introduces other graphical bugs as well
Is there a site to show game performances for the 8 gen 2 and recommended settings? I wonder how something like Rogue Squadron 2&3 run.
Also for 3DS, never use hardware shaders. That was stutter city.
EmuReady
You can sort by SoC instead of specific devices
The Odin 2 has the 8 gen 2 and Rogue Squadron 2 doesn't run that well on it. You can find footage on YT if you want. Playable if you don't mind low framerates and bad audio
i wanna place an order for a pro or whatever so bad
but i dont wanna wait until december
lol
This was been popular enough I suspect you see plenty of them in the marketplace before December if AYN fulfills and ships like the Odin 2 and not the Odin 2 portal.
Would there be any performance gain if I only emulate less demanding game on the Switch with 8 instate of 12 gig of ram? MK8 is the only outliner and Smash Bros seems to struggle no matter what.
Most Switch games I tried run great on my 8gb Odin 2 Mini
I don't think you need the 12gb model for Switch
8gb should be plenty enough, more than that is just for show
The main reason I went for the Pro model is the extra internal storage
For Android games lol
i'm always intrigued by that. do people play more than 1-2 game at a time?
I just like to have a bunch of games on there and those console ports like Grid Legends and Alien Isolation require a lot of space
I want to play some Destiny Rising too
I was going with the pro but then I watched Joey's video where he mentioned the price of thr max is pretty much just the cost of a TB SD card so I went with that 😅
they are $67 currently on prime deal. Might get the $299 with 1tb SD card.
How fast is the internal storage?
Good point
A 512gb SD card alongside 256GB internal storage is probably enough for me though
Oh yeah that'll probably be plenty
I can't even fill 64G card 🙃
i just add stuff to my 1tb card if it looks interesting. "maybe 1 day ill want to play it, ill add it"
that strategy is not good when you add ps2 games without reservation lol. 1tb all the way for me
choice overload is a thing, then you never able to pick one and start playing
I use 512GB and almost filled it even with minimal 3DS and Switch games😭 definitely need 1tb if I get a Thor
playing too little games is definitely not a problem for me
I have a curated list with only games I’m interested in playing, apparently I’m interested in a lot of games….
just use romm for your collection, then only pull the one you need at the moment on your device
collect all you want, with cheap storage price
cant do that on a plane
"but sometimes" argument
"just do it my way despite your personal use case" argument
just a suggestion to save time and money
but im already set up, im already living my best life
A bit sad a bothered that I’m probably gonna have to replace my 477 with the Thor. I really like it but can’t afford keeping both and I know in the long run I will like the Thor more because I love my DS and 3DS plus playing them on my Steam Deck OLED made me realize how I wish my 3DS had a large, beautiful OLED display🥲
Brightness is so bad outdoors in the sun. Literally can’t see anything.
You could still use the 477 as the ultimate 4:3 machine
It's better than the Thor for 16 bit retro games and I would also use it to play Dreamcast, N64, PS1
I'm actually looking for a device like that to have alongside the Thor. It would cover all my emulation needs but I can't afford the 477M so it would be a T820 device or even the Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini
476H? Sounds like your exact use case
It gets up to $195 including shipping and tax which is way more than I'm willing to pay for a Dreamcast and under device
My best bet is just re-buying the RG406H again. I regret selling it
Im interested in it as well
Pocket Air Mini looks cool but the LCD ghosting shown in the Techdweeb review worries me just a little
Can always load it up and use the favourites category to curate.
I returned my 477m about a month ago 😂 it was ultimately kinda meh great screen but wrong form factor
I still keep the RG406V around as a secondary device, considering replacing it with the RP Classic
in a weird way... i kinda like the ghosting
RP Classic would be perfect for me if it had a single analog stick
Lol I might get it anyway. It seems like a great value
I almost bought one today but couldnt figure out how to order it now I'm more interested in the 476H 😂
RG406V seems cool too. I wish it had analog triggers somehow but that's not a huge deal. It's definitely in my list of handhelds I'm considering
I'm not usually into verticals but maybe i should consider that one as well
It's very specific but I want analog triggers for Dreamcast racing games
Lol big price difference between those two
I don't think the Pocket Air Mini starts shipping until November
True but I like the 476H's big screen ...but then again I like the overall design of the pocket air no glass front and the ergonomics.. yeah im not sure
I would get the 476H if it was $150
But i don't want to pay more than that
isn't the 476H a decent amount more powerful than the pocket air mini?
Yes
But for me not that much of a difference cause I would use both for just Dreamcast and below
Dreamcast is gonna look so nice on that 1280x960 display too
I hope I get $300 for mine. It’s the 8gig but comes with 512gb card, bag, low profile sticks and slim grip.
Yeah perfect 2x upscale
I heard it didn't sell as well as they'd hoped so it might get a price drop soon
Is there a channel here to sell your handheld?
I'd say that's a fair deal
I’m always weary with eBay.
I hope so. I will make my choice by the time the Pocket Air Mini is actually available
I sold my Odin 2 on ebay recently kind of wish I just went through here
After you hit lv5 there's a marketplace that unlocks
Yeah same I should just slow down and wait a bit I already have the Odin 2 mini and the Thor is on the way. I just feel I might sell the Odin 2 mini and want a less powerful companion device with one screen but I'll try the Thor first
I'm in the exact same situation with the exact same devices lol
Oh good taste
I definitely can't justify having both the O2 Mini and the Thor
Gonna sell the O2 Mini once the Thor arrives and buy a cheaper 4:3 handheld
Yeah if the Thor didn't exist I would just stick with the odin2 mini but things change fast around here
Same. I love my O2 Mini and I will probably miss it a lot
No sell only buy
Some people in the AYN Thor channel have had their Thor ship out
Or at least one person
They immediately showed a joke of a landmine Amazon order, lmao
Lol I skimmed it and never saw the joke
I don't really need analog triggers on the 406V (except for Super Mario Sunshine but I can play that elsewhere). Other than being a bit bulky and ugly it's a really great device. Also around the same price as the RP Classic which makes it a difficult choice.
I won't play any GameCube on it but I wnat analog triggers specifically for Dreamcast racing games. I need my Metropolis Street Racer
I'm not aware of any vertical device with analog triggers. And in that price range they're not easy to find, either.
Yeah I know it doesn't exist so I'm gonna have to go with a horizontal handheld (which I prefer anyway in terms of comfort) I just like the wacky design of the 406V
Seems like a cool device to show off to people as well. Just a chunky Gameboy
Haha yeah it's like a bloated og Game Boy
It looks nice to hold
Actually Metropolis Street Racer has wide-screen support so I could just play it on the Thor and get the chunky Gameboy for everything else Dreamcast and under 🤔
It is very comfortable (I definitely prefer verticals in terms of comfort anyway, and this one is certainly comfort before style haha)
Once you go OLED you can't go back. Classic+Thor/portal is the end game combo
I like the style too the opaque black goes well with it
I have no problem going back and forth
Yeah I actually like the design. It has personality to it
I agree, the screen lost a bit of its appeal once you compare it to an OLED. It's still good though.
I'm really sensitive to motion blur so for me I need the clarity of oled
Portal and Thor do the same thing i wouldn't want both I'd keep the Thor since it's at least pocketable
My eyes are too trained from other OLED devices
I disagree. I used to be very Oled pilled but modern IPS displays look really good and it doesn't feel bad going back to them for me
Yeah I meant portal or Thor depending on your desire. I'm selling my portal once the Thor is here
It does, I just wish it was a little more pocket friendly
Thor plus grip is good enough (I assume) that I can't justify keeping both
Does a modern IPS handheld exist? Like other than corpo devices like the legion go. Genuine question cause I assume all of these handhelds are using old off the shelf parts
Does it not go into a pocket easily in that case I'll focus on the pocket air mini and 476h
Even the legion gos screen at max refresh, I notice the blur now
It is a nice screen otherwise tho
Not really, especially the analog sticks get in the way quite a bit. I made a 3d printed case for it, tried to get it as small as possible but it's still quite bulky
I'd trade it in for the go 2 if that wasn't 1400 dollars
Yeah if the go 2 was 600 - 700 I'd let go of the Steam Deck for it but it's way out of range
It'll bomb and maybe we can get it off a deep discount from Best buy used!
i believe you can still buy the IPS steam deck, although kinda corpo
477m/476h with their custom LTPS panel
I said non corpo devices. And that screen is awful I had a steam deck
This I have not seen in person so I don't know
it's very nice
I don't trust when reviewers just say it cause no reviewers pointed out the ghosting on the regular Odin 2
this is where i remember that i am extremely not picky about screens because i don’t mind the screen at all
not that you shouldn’t be, for the price a lot of things are asking
We're all different. Some people are sensitive to lag, OLED flicker, all that stuff
Just gotta find what works for you
totally agreed, i have family who get motion sickness from IPS and not from OLED. sometimes wish i was a bit more discerning about these things, given
Oh I see it now!
It's better not to be. It's more expensive to be lol
I wish I could go back to the time I didn't care about how clear audio was. Then I got my first set of open back Sennheiser, then the spiral deeper into the abyss happened
I’m playing Hades on the Steam Deck OLED right now and it’s what makes me switch from the 477 to Thor. The colors look amazing for an lcd, but the OLED just takes it a whole step further, especially in dimmer settings.
120hz means I can also use the same crt beam shader as on the 477 for extra animation sharpness.
yeah 120hz is a huge game changer
BFI >
that comparison is actually pretty helpful for understanding here, because i am definitely picky about audio. as in, “i have multiple pairs of sennheisers”, picky
Modern as in better than an old PSP or 3DS display. The IPS displays on the RG476H and Konkr Pocket Fit look awesome
I just ordered a 1TB Lexar card that’s 205 MB/s. I wonder if it takes advantage of the faster speed.
Is the konker pocket fit out? I thought just review versions were
I'm basing this on reviews/impressions from Ryan Retro and Russ. They compared it to Oled displays like the RP5 and said that there wasn't much of a difference and that the colours really pop on the Konkr lcd
are looking to be awesome*
But even the Lcd on the old RG406H I had looked great to me. I didn't notice a huge downgrade coming from the RP5 or anything
Right, if you would've said it like that I wouldn't have said anything. You don't actually know. I just don't trust reviewers on this cause what I'm used to isn't what they are
No one called out the Odin 2 ghosting
Like when a reviewer says something is comfortable. It's to them. We all got different hands. Just because a reviewer says something doesn't mean it's fact
I trust Ryan more cause he before he got the Konkr he was one of the people that was like "Oled or bust" but that screen won him over
Yeah I don't trust anyone. Im very sensitive to blur
If only this was a hobby where you could go to a store and check em out
Instead I'll preorder that max Thor and hope for the best XD
Fair enough. I'm not as sensitive to this stuff tbf
Even when it comes to latency
A lot of people had issues with the O2 Mini screen and to me it was perfect lol
It's lovely when we're not sensitive to it 😄
Are there any real pictures of the grips available?
Watch Russ' (Retro Game Corps) video, he has the grips
same combination here
both will be purple
You're planning to paint your Thor?
yeah always experience something for yourself, this hobby is about how you enjoy your handhelds
Oh, the transparent purple one
In my head I was thinking Gamecube purple
Hopefully the transparent plastic they use holds up on the hinge
Thanks, he only has the black one. Wanted to see the others to understand what would look better with the purple Thor. Probably black anyways
I only hate the full gloss surface. It serves no purpose but reflect more and showing smudges and scratches over time 😕
Devices with OLED screens without a glass front will most likely have the screen slight recessed and would accumulate dust and dirt in the transition area
that's.. not at all true, i've got several next to me right now, it's purely for style
thinking if I should add grip to my order now or wait until someone makes a slim grip on Etsy🤔. Probably don’t need a case since I rarely use my backpack and it’s as pocketable as a 3DSXL more or less.
Obviously it will depend how small the build tolerances are. But I don’t expect AYN to have the same manufacturing tolerances as Nintendo (as switch OLED didn’t use a front glass panel)
it's easier not to have a full glass front, doesn't result in it being recessed
depends on how much dpad-centric gaming you do, if it's not a lot I think you can wait for enthusiast options to show up
I personally play a lot of dpad-centric games so I went for the stock grip
Without a glass front the screen always need to be somewhat recessed as you need clearance for the shell to wrap around the screen. You can see this as the screen is recessed in relation to the body or the body is protruding above the screen. However there is a way for the screen to be flushed with the body without a glass front but you will have like a small “ditch” all around the screen which will accumulate dust anyways.
all screens are laminated these days, there's no gap & no recessed area
I don’t think this is true for screens that were made for different devices and are incorporated around a custom made body, i.e handhelds. But I’m not an expert so I will assume you are correct and it was chosen for style purposes. Anyways I actually like the glass front.
a good example is the rg 505, uses the ps vita screen without the glass front. i don't mind glass either, people care way too much about smudges
Based on chat gpt the fully viewable widescreen area is slightly larger than on the latest iPhone pro max
what's the process of transferring games from my 3ds to the thor, i have them on my sd card, will they just drag and drop or will it nto be in the right format?
They need to be decrypted
better off just redownloading them tbh
Isn’t the area where it says anbernic glass?
aren't they already decrypted if they are on my 3ds?
the lens? yah, they're all glass lenses these days, you can laminate the panel to whatever you want without an air gap or recess is my point tho
Yeah, i get you know. What I meant is that they will always be a transition point from a screen or laminated area to the shell where small dust can accumulate. But it’s negligible in this case.
bezel? yah you're right there, there's always a slight bezel (or a huge one in the 505's case lol), they're usually pretty good about not collecting dust between them & the shell tho
I can export the games I have installed on my CFW 3DS with the “Build CIA from files” function?
Finding decrypted version of everything would be a pain.
eh, not if you know where to look, cia isn't really optimal either since they'd need to be individually installed instead of just drag & drop, decrypted cci are ideal ( the compressed .zcci even better, but you'd probably have to compress them manually)
I like my Brick as well, I think the Thor is going to completely replace it for me. I find that having multiple devices just causes frustration rather than enjoyment
the 35xxsp will be the only small handheld I keep while selling my 40XXV, it’s a bit too small for my hands but still fun to keep around
I got the accessories pack and if I don't like the grip don't use it I'll post it to the marketplace here. We'll see.
I did basically almost full 512 sd card with basically just dualscreen games and switch pokeymen .... still haven't decided if I want to upgrade from Base to Pro though
I didn't find the option for transparency on my odinportal sadly
Meanwhile i sold oiginal Odin 2 ... and ordered Portal + Thor
Fascinating ... for me they will complement each other pretty nicely
I like the lanyard but wish there was more variation like a black one.
$45 for DHL damn and then they also ask for tax on top….why would anyone pick that over standard.
that battery life tests for Joey is damn good esp given that the battery size is 6000mah on the thor
Plus the fact that he said it wasn't calculated or anything but it was actually him running the battery down
Takes a lot of time and effort
Battery is on par running Switch as on an actual v1 Switch with new batteries.
Indeed
I heard MK8D runs great now even on 8GB with the latest patch but how about Smash Bros Ultimate?
no idea what does this mean but looks like the pro ribbon cable camp won?
@upper sail this one's for you
Already got an email from them a while back saying they will not put it on my Thor, so at the time I thought it was just them actually being willing to give a custom option.
Good to see everyone who prefers it will get that option.
@wispy fjord make sure to email them if you want to not have the ribbon covered.
Thor is in the cart but might switch from 8 to 12GB ram just for future proofing and a bit more headroom. I also heard apps can eat internal storage fast.
it is more concerns about 128 gb internal storage 🙂 i had Flip2 and i was pissed off with such small space, because gamehub games, switch DLC and updates, android games are using just internal space, and 128 GB is just too low.
tbh i dont plan android games nor gamehub
but i am itching to upgrade to 12gb too for a bit of futureproofing
I just think 256GB is almost as useless as 128GB. I stuck with the Base model. I would have gone Pro if it had 512GB.
will decide when i get reply from ayn about not losing shipping spot
yeah, 512 is sweetspot, i`m using Odin 2 Portal with 512 GB and 12 GB RAM
Much less people would consider the max if pro had 512GB.
Am I the only one who actually finds the orange ribbon cable visible through the purple case quite appealing?
Anybody know how the speakers compare to the 3DS XL?
Damn, I did not know the difference with the v1 Switch screen is this little green portion 😲
Now I see myself playing more Switch on the go.
It's not hidden by default
The way they phrased it to me made it sound like it was, so excuse me for thinking so.
I spend more on this with the 1tb sd card during prime sales than a new Switch 2💀Ramen noddles til the end of the year it is🍜
I think it's the other way around from reading Nicole's message. Glad to hear!!
Aaand I just caught up
Thanks for thinking of me tho!

Ayn makes some premium Android based emulation handhelds. This one might be their best work. We've seen really powerful DS form factor handhelds before, but this one is almost as small as a DS Lite. The Ayn Thor is my new go to right now...

Oh speaking of which.
@sacred gorge @nocturne osprey Just letting you know that they’re making it an option to have the ribbon cable covered by the film or not, with the ribbon being uncovered by default. Make sure to email Ayn if you want your purple Thor to cover the ribbon.
Personally I still think the ribbon cable looks better uncovered, but given it’s now an option to have it covered or uncovered, I obviously don’t feel annoyed anymore about the covered version since it’s not literally being forced on me.
Love that all the videos are coming in now
And I’m only more sure now about my purchase decision
Same here. Not long to go now!!!
I also agree. It gives an edgy look to it.
More colors, more betterer.
Also idk. Orange and purple are naturally really complimentary, it just lights up my brain good.
Eh, I just like it because the whole reason I like clear shells is the ability to see the internal circuitry of the device.
The only disappointment for me is the state of 3ds emulation. I assumed it was further ahead and that you could pre-compile shaders but that's not the fault of the device at all and most 3ds games still run just fine
And I assume it will only get better now that there's a very popular device dedicated to it
A bit bummed out that I can't play Inazuma Eleven 3 on it. It always sucks when one of the few games you need to run well doesn't on an emulation device
did he cover the pocket ds prior?
He says in the video he doesn't have one.
Yeah he only has the flip 1s ds thing
just got in the office. about to lay out my youtube queue lol
i am kinda tempted to order the max though since usually those go out p quick
have we established if the transparent hinge is weaker yet?
Can't really know for sure until it's been out in the wild for a while.
fair
Like no one really expected the transparent Flip 2 to be the strongest hinge, but kinda here we are.
The lore is basically what's said on the tin. So far the transparent blue Flip 2 has had the absolute least amount of hinge break reports of the options.
With last I heard, though a few months ago, there's virtually no credible reports of it breaking atm.
If the hinge breaks on my $350 handheld, I might quit gaming altogether and get back into sports or something
thank you!
I really like how clean the purple Thor looks with the ribbon cable covered so I'll definitely send the email
wow, sick
The transparent red/watermelon flip 1 also didn't have hinge issues iirc.
I’m very lucky to have never had the 3DS so I have no nostalgia or expectations for it. If it boots up and runs at 30fps that’s fine by me
Maybe it’s also due to less of those flips being produced?
I’ll have to go back to the gym 🤕
I don't need 60fps but frequent stutters (especially sound stutters) do bother me
I mean, heck, we haven't really heard about many more hinge breaks since that large batch from back then.
My black Flip 2 is still going strong and it was a pre-order unit.
Shoot. I pulled the trigger and got a thor. Anyone interested in ps buttons for it? I’ll probably make some for 3d printing if the teardown is not too bad.
It's due to how plastics work, from what I understand.
Bad transparent = weaker
Solid = strong
Good transparent = stronger
Due to materials used to achieve the effects
my purple flip 2 is still fine as well
the only hinge that's ever broken on my was the ds lite one so i guess that keeps me from being too paranoid
gba sp, 3ds, flip, flip 2, current galaxy zflip 6
maybe im playing with fire
oh original flip ds, too lol
that one is also fine
I’ve always wanted ps buttons but I’ve never opened up any of these devices so I’d realistically never buy 💔
Interesting
Very!
I make the design mostly, but don’t sell. I’ve made some for some other handhelds, including the odin 2 mini. So you can 3d print them and throw them in :p. I do know a lot of people aren’t confident in opening their devices tho. So I get it.
For me, it’s part of the fun in owning one of these
I’m the same on the software side, I like trying different front ends, emulators, apps, games
Hi all, thinking about picking up the Max (mostly because it saves me from having to buy a 1TB card since the cost difference is about the same) and was just curious, considering all that this seems to do am I fairly future proofed since I don't know if I'd buy another android handheld?
I mean, it's not THE MOST POWERFUL chip but it should run most anything you'd want to
The stuff that's not really working like wiiU or PS3 are rough on everything if I'm understanding it correctly (just because dev is early)
I'm considering myself future proof
For my use anyways
that's what I am seeing as well, for the most part anything I might want to play on PS3 or WU I have on current gen or if I really want to play I still have both of those systems set up
The only thing more power would help with at this point is pretty much just Winlator/Gamehub stuff.
