3DS is notorious for it because of, well, the 3D layers, if I'm remembering my bits of research correctly.

Others are just that resolution scaling can mess with how well a texture stretches over a 3D plane because suddenly they don't actually match in specific.

My most recent experience with it is probably Yakuza 1 and 2 on PS2. Where they get a lot of weird duplicate light effects on things like neon signs. And Yakuza 2 with a black line just 20% above the bottom of the screen. Only happens at 2x scaling or higher.

So thankfully 1.75x is fine, and with their HD texture packs, the games still look pretty good on my O2M.

Should note it’s not really a ghosting effect but moreso a “shadow effect” from the fact it’s basically taking some extra layers on the models for certain games and stretching them outwards to match the “size”(really resolution) of the model.

Pokémon Sun and Moon had the same issue, and there’s already cheats for disabling it on them, Awakening, and I think even Fates.

I think for me the Thor is gonna feel like a normal size. Mostly because I used a 3DS XL and then a New 3DS XL for so long.

The RG34XX, which is virtually the same size as a GBA, feels so small.

But the screen still doesn't feel tiny, and that's 3.4. The bottom screen on this is half an inch bigger right?

I have at home Lenovo Go S. This is my home console and handheld. I want Odin 3 with Elite to be my main travel/work/public transport console, because Lenovo is just too big for that. And i want especialy Elite CPU, because i mostly playing Steam/Gamehub games. Sad that Thor doesnt have Ultra edition with Elite CPU, then i will not need Odin3 and Thor.

Smaller indies will handle and Thor (i’m trying to sold now Odin2 Portal, which can play a lot of indies and older PC games. But for some games it is missing power, like for Deep Rock Galactic Survivor, on this chipset it is running just 15-25 fps and is very strugling when on screen are more mobs. I not needed very powerfull device, but i need just a little more power than Thor/Odin2 devices to be able play smootly middle games like mentioned one.

Oh, it wasn’t for specifically Rush, it’s just one of my first examples since it’s a childhood favorite.

In general I preferred using DSi for most DS games since they just looked better on them thanks to the layout. With us now finally getting dual screen handhelds, that problem is mostly fixed.

The issue with these handhelds is that they don't have a special digitizer screen layer and only support generic touch pens.

This is so often overlooked. The current format is the best of both worlds. If it was very ergonomic it wouldn't be portable anymore. Now we have 2 options. And the grip is made for it by ayn and is cheap. Also for me just having fat grips but then going straight back does nothing for ergo. The grip option allows the handles to flare out like on an Xbox controller. Win win

My only gripe about Thor is the bottom screen aspect ratio. Would be perfect if it were 4:3. So partly I am hoping to see RP Mini 2 with the rumored “mortgage screen” which may be used for Thor 2.

Thor SDG2 is roughly £80 more than what I paid for a RG477M. And has some sacrifices when it comes to comfort for D Pad centric games and slightly less pocketable.

It comes out as around £245. (Rg477m was £165). Its hard to justify that much money for a retro handheld, especially when I enjoy 2D centric games the most (and i already own a Ally X and Hacked Switch and 3DS).

But its great what Ayn are doing but I will wait it out until Gamehub, Switch and Wii U emulation gets much better before I spend that much money on a retro handheld. So will look out for Thor 2 or even Thor 3. For now RG477M is my end game device for up to PS2, Wii, GC, games which is all im interested in at the moment when it comes to retro handheld

The more I think about it Thor cant be an all in one device for retro handhelds as the comfort is compromised. Its probably only great for 1 stick/face button games (DC, PS2, GC, Wii). Dual stick and d pad focused games are a compromised experience when it comes to comfort. Switch and Gamehub still isnt bug free enough.

The combination of being a tall device and boxy feel of a clamshell especially with trigger that are not rounded off just doesnt make sense to game on tbis for SNES, GBA etc.

So really its a very good DS and 3DS handheld. But the issue i have with DS its still a compromised experience when it comes to stylus games due to lack of S Pen/Digitizer and 120hz bottom screen. If you are paying a lot for a dedicated DS and 3DS device id want it to be perfect.

I somewhat agree but something like a RG476H with a more powerful chipset is all in one (excluding DS and 3DS). I find PS2 and GC games that only use one stick (right stick for occasional camera controls) manageable with sticks below. Only shooters suffer but let's be honest PS2, GC library doesnt have many decent shooters. So something like RG476H with a OLED screen would be my end game upto PS2/Wii all in one device. Good Switch and Gamehub i just dont count as emulation isnt the best for those systems. Add a removable 2nd screen then that would be perfect for DS and 3DS as well

I will say, I might find having both the Odin 3 and Thor kind of weird bc of the screens being the same size, but I also don't entirely enjoy using the Switch 1 and find that often cramps my hand with the flat ergos and size of it.
I might instead consider an Odin 3 Portal actually if it becomes a thing as my main device with the Thor being the companion.
Depends on if it has better ergos than the Odin 2 Portal and a more fun selection of colors. I don't really want to have to buy a grip for it

8Gen2 is an already proven and well-developed for chip

Thor will definitely hold me well over until we see if an Odin 3 Portal gets made (which I don't see why AYN shouldn't make one)

O3P having the full-size sticks of the O3 and better ergos than O2P would be my personal wish list to have as a complimentary device to the Thor.
It wouldn't be super portable anyways, so I don't think giving it better ergo bumps would be too big a deal imo, but that's a personal preference thing 100%.

There's some new 8Gen5 drivers that work with Elite that have already shown very promising developments from screenshots I saw in teh AYN server, so it won't be too long before 8 Elite has much more improved compatibility 🙏
But I'm glad the Thor is a thing as a big clamshell enthusiast
