The Sims 2 would also kick ass on that thing. It's not too action heavy, could probably go 2x (which the graphics are suitably designed for), and since most of the game logic is based on the (emulated) clock you wouldn't be missing out on too much even if there was a little slowdown.

external displays usually will have 1-2 lag frames as they're often converting to an hdmi or other standard rather than direct driving the display like you can on a mipi/dsi lane (which soc's like this often only have one fully featured lane for video of that type)

this is an Android display driver issue, the way Anbernic have set up their displays is that Android thinks the top display is HDMI (it's not, internally they are both wired via DSI, same like the Thor etc).
Additional Android jank on their stock firmware (and Android to an extent) treats external displays differently and increases latency.

I have forced the displays to show up as one now, and some other things in GammaOS to wire it up so we get LCD sync and no framedrops

Yeah. I was thinking about this earlier.
When I got into handheld emulation, every new device was ‘runs most Dreamcast games, but not flawlessly’. And I get that we’ve moved on, but there was a level of tolerance that doesn’t seem to exist today.
Or maybe people are just picky about where they apply it. People seem to love the Thor. I’m with them - can’t believe I’ve got a dualscreen handheld that runs 3DS upscaled to the wazoo, Switch, PC games… but it doesn’t run them perfectly.
I think there’s room for a cheap DS that isn’t perfect.
