#Retroid Pocket Classic
1 messages Ā· Page 15 of 1
Linux would be nice to use but with it being a new chip it's unlikely to happen. I remember reading somewhere that it only happened for the RP5 because the drivers or whatever were released 2 years ago from Qualcomm
The RP Classic has a new chip so it's unlikely
there are some ES-DE themes designed around squareish aspect ratios that could be worth trying
I like that it opens up the massive library of android games
yeah though tbh most of the good ones are ports
given the screen and controls what android games do you have in mind?
I used Daijisho on my O2M because it supports multiple microSD cards and I used Skraper to import scrapes separately, but yeah, Iām ready to move onto ES-DE for my Classic
Sounds good, I have used Dajisho before and didnāt mind it though I think Iāll try ES-DE on this
San andreas and alien isolation
Isolation I dont think will actually be playable with just a dpad, but san andreas would be fine id think
Vice city and gta 3 run perfectly on the brick with portmaster
I also want to try the port of Another World
oh nice
Its on the list of greatest games of all time, and Im stuck on the first part lol
Figured there may have been some tweaks on the android port
there's a sega cd version which I think would be a lot of fun with the 6 button classic
I think I have every version of it at this point, and still dont know which may be the simplest
Gba or snes maybe
This is a list of video games that video game journalists or magazines have considered among the best of all time. The games are included on at least six separate best-of lists from different publications (inclusive of all time periods, platforms and genres), as chosen by their editorial staff.
artbook next already works with square ratios
all i need!
artbook next is like the most versatile theme, end game theme!
So they really shipping this out in the next couple of days? Or was that just for the flip 2?
the flip 2 has started shipping. yes this is supposed to ship in the next couple of days
They claim on weds
Best of luck š¤ā¤ļø
My thing is Iām not going to the trouble of setting up Android if I donāt have the sticks to use for those games
Still no first impressions/reviews šµāš«
I heard they just shipped out review units
I enjoy playing Quake 2 for ps1 on verticals lol
Whered you hear
Yea all those older ones are fine, where you move and look with one control
But modern fps you need two
Quake 2 64 in the remaster edition was awesome to play.
My classic is shipping with my flip via 4px
interesting, some peeps were saying flip 2 and classic are shipping separately
Retroid told us it would
It just updated about an hour ago previously it didn't show the classic
curious, when did you put in your order?
Arent there like "2" types of dhl, one thats gets something to you from the other side of the world in like a day or 2, and the other which takes like a month
yeah the one with the rocket ship and the other with the carrier pigeon
Teleportation and pony express
Unfortunately the DHL that ships to me is the pony express
Being rural sucks sometimes
With what they charged for shipping, Im hoping its the good one, if thats the case, I might have it as early as this weekend
My pony express shipping would have cost me $50
No Shipping update on my part, has anyone else seen changes in their order status??
A few minutes after the pre-orders went live
Iām not rural at all. Sandwiched within 45 minutes of two metro areas. And still, pretty sure DHL ships to me by foot. I had some junk from temu take 3 weeks to get to me after it hit NYC
I'll be damned. They are actually doing it
I ordered the pkmn yellow color alone like 30 minutes into the order cycle. Wondering what colors they're going to start with. Knowing the people in the community spaces, I'm pretty sure the most popular ones are going to be retro color and the 6 button one. Probably also helps that they should share parts
Me 2 lol
Ordered a classic 6 and a kiwi, 2 separate orders incase they try to do shipping by color due to supply chain etc.š
RP Classic review unit shipping today
And then our preorder units the day after, right?
I'm sure with the new chip, all the colors, 2 different boards, and 2 different molds, there was a lot to get done ahead of the tariffs
It'll be interesting to see if the preorders do go out this week, like right as the review units are arriving, but then even if it's good, it may be too late to avoid tariffs so people may hold off buying
Ok I got tracking, Retroid sent the PokƩmon yellow classic
Hope it looks pretty
Kinda wish they were shipping now...
I bet it will only be a few more days at most until customer shipping
The bundles likely first? Would be my guess
Nice, super excited to see some impressions. First one to show Beetle Saturn performance gets a banana sticker š
This is a dumb question... I've bought about a dozen of these handhelds, but never one with significant internal storage like the Retroid Classic. 128 GB is more than enough storage for me. Will there be any benefit to storing something on an external card?
I mostly have Linux handhelds, too. First time setting up a proper Android device. I have G Cloud, but it's really been for streaming, no emulators/front end.
Ah just to have more storage or a central place for roms, bios and apk installers mainly, then you can pop it into another Android handheld and be ready to go.
So the review units are just one day earlier? damn
Hope the reviews are good for you guys
Ah crap, thatās the one I had and cancelled. Still, kinda thinking the first runs on these are gonna be a mess
Possibly, but the alrenative is a second run that costs $400 or whatever after tarriffs
That was sort of where I landed though: I donāt want a beta one, and itās not worth the cost+tariffs to me, so Iām just gonna hold off.
Preordered this on a whim, even though I usually am very anti-preordering. Last two gaming-related things I preordered were Duke Nukem Forever and Cyberpunk so, fingers crossed!
Can see why you avoid them now
If you go the route of installing Android games on a square screen, they can only be installed on internal storage, so having more storage space helps
Please use Beetle Saturn as a performance benchmark. They sell a 6-buttons Saturn so it matters more than with other handhelds.
I don't mind the reviews not coming out as it a new chip I would like to see for myself how well it does.I am expecting similar levels to the allwinner in the anbernics given the price and the lack of sticks but I am prepared to be surprised. The oled screen should more than compensate.
Itās more powerful than h700
The specs of the classic will shit on the brickās allwinner chip , which shits on all the anbernics out. Just for reference Its twice as powerful as the pocket2s, which everyone will recommend you buy over any anbernic š
Donāt forget to account for price š
But how much more. Will n64 work well on it.
Good idea!
A benefit of general shipping happening alongside review units is that you'll have way more reviews to watch and read
and most likely the review units are finalized batch 1 hardware, maybe beta software
But will still be considered an engineering sample / pre-production technically
Its the 16th in china, should start shipping today š
"Retroid, its 3 am, shouldnt you be packing orders?"
For ur future reference, Anything with more than 4gb of ram with run n64 flawlessly, with 6-8gb of ram you can even begin to mess with filters, up scaling, & rom hacks
Sadge, wanted to see the 6 buttons š¦
So they send each reviewer a different one so people will see each style, one of us got a notice for 6 button unit, but who? We will see š
Jeez, sounds like they all need a big wheel of cheese to help with their IBS. In their darkness bind them, etc. so they don't shit all over each other.
the 406v is more powerful than the brick and the rp2s
(and can play ps2, gc, dc, psp, and other systems that need an analog)
I like the idea of the classic a lot but no reason to spread misinfo about other handhelds
I'm still amazed this is only 120 USD. Thought they'd try and go the Abernic mid-tier route and hit 160 to 180 USD. Especially with that OLED screen.
yeah this could be a great deal if you don't want sticks (I don't) and the new chipset/android rom is good
Yeah, I don't expect this chipset to be on par with the flip 2 coming in or get within spittin' distance of my S8gen2 tablet, but will absolutely knock it out of the park for anything I want to play on a vertical handheld.
I mean would I prefer the pocket DMG? Yeah, of course. Though I'd only pay like 275 for that. If the classic is as good as I hope, the DMG would have to be like 200 USD for me to even consider it.
One way or another and tarrifs aside, I think it's a friggin' great year for handhelds - we'll start to see the high end stuff become standard in the mid grounds. OLED screens. Higher refresh rates in the 200 dollar tier purchase zones, more RAM, storage, etc. Abernic 557 is another good indicator of this.
I forgot which RH reviewer said this, but it stuck home for me: "A lot of reviewers are bitching and moaning about all of these devices being largely the same, but I think we'll look back on this as a magical time for retro enthusiasts." It's just so awesome to have all these new systems come out so many times a year in different form factors, processors, colors, etc. Like every month. Aggrevates my FOMO and hurts my wallet, but still insanely cool time for gamers.
Hoping someone gets a 4gb and 6gb so we can see the difference
i was only wanting a rg35xxv+ with oled, so my bar is set really low lol
i hope itll support linux
down the line
Fingers crossed š¤
i want it to be as simple as those handhelds
whereas the flip2 is fine as an android
yea I often use my RP5 for PS2 game and the black space is wasted
some of them
you can certainly turn on the option in nethersx2
The widescreen patches?
Here I am eating crow and waiting for ayaneo to ship out my pocket dmg š
which pocket dmg did you get
Black 16gb/512gb
My final handheld before the tariff wars pick up
Yup. Was my deal breaker. Paying for it but I got a ocd level of black handhelds on my desk š¤£
can you put linux on the pocket dmg?
Me too. Iāve been tempted to order rp5 but Iām waiting on the updated mini
is it just the smaller size over the rp5 that makes you choose the mini?
I don't think so but would be awesome
Im interested in that one as well
Itās also built like a brick shithouse and is effectively a āstay at homeā handheld for anyone without jenko jeans or a dedicated fanny-pack (in turn being likely one of the best vertical handhelds for serving as a ācomfy stay at homeā handheld).
But yeah, it is more powerful, although I think their comment was mostly them thinking of the XX handhelds and outright forgetting that Anbernic makes non-budget stuff.
oh it's definitely not 'dedicated fanny pack' sized lmao
fits fine in the accessory pouch of any laptop sling I own
where you'd normally put a mouse or something
Fair enough, I donāt think I can even remember a time Iāve ever used Fanny packs, so Iām not sure if theyāre around the same size as my travel bag or if theyāre smaller.
basically the exposed sticks vs no sticks is gonna be the biggest difference in portability between the two
Makes it seem so much bigger than I thought
the 406v's cake isn't even that much thicker than the classic's gbc style dump truck
the 406v isn't as big as some people picture and the classic is a lot bigger than I think many are picturing
a lot of people are acting like the classic is barely bigger than a MM+
when in reality...
How small/big are the sticks? Those are the main things Iām thinking of in conjunction with the booty.
the sticks on the 406v are basically retroid sticks but not recessed at all so they definitely cannot stay if you want to even think about jamming it in a pocket
yeah the classic's 3.92 inch screen vs the 406V's 4 inch screen should be a dead giveaway theyre close in size
I have considered doing a stick delete on my 406v though
im just guessing its about the size of a rg40v
#1339773221175824415 message
Yeah, Iām honestly still confused on how people keep making that mistake when the height of the Classic screen alone is already like 60%-75% of the Miyoo Miniās entire height.
Do you guys think they might slightly delay the shipping of the RPC? The fact that the reviewer consoles only just shopped, and also the US SNES Flips still havenāt shipped makes me a bit concerned
it's pretty much DMG sized, so not THAT big
retro catalog doesn't have any nintendo handhelds older than NDS in it š
Can we drill out a hole and transplant that stick onto the classic?
lol no
Nope, not without the wiring or connector for the stick.
yeah unfortunately
Youād basically be adding a joystick that has zero actual functionality.
I'd sure love that
can't win em all tho
yeah the 406v is a wide lad
just really not a full size category larger than the classic
people act like it's a vertical steam deck lol
which to be clear I would buy.
use the rp5 screen
nah, same screen as the steam deck oled
shame it won't be allowed on airplanes due to having over 100whr of battery
I can only imagine how heavy that would be lmao
imagine if the o2portal had a 20k in it
anyone else thinking of getting this for the classic?
https://ayaneo-shop.myshopify.com/products/ayaneo-pocket-dmg-limited-edition-storage-bag
Gyatt that thang is chunkyš¤£
https://www.sfbags.com/products/analogue-pocket-pouch?srsltid=AfmBOoow-krYo1_Wel0jYe0lepOPC6RSckIs-GQDniWMT3-fp9R9Uj7Y I saw someone suggesting this
I went with the oem one
Need more sleeve options
which one is that
is that the $10 that says design not final or something. i got it too
Yea
Dont think Ill ever actually use it
It'd be cool if we got something like this
for a few dollars more you can ge the ayaneo, and comes with strap if you need it
Same got a case when I first got my brick and it has never left the room, it just lives in my pocket
I wish the ayaneo device itself was only a few bucks more
Oh yeah that's too big imo
Yeah. Realized this with DMG. Screen is gorgeous but not exactly small
Best case I ever had. Lol
Second best case I ever had š
It's nice because it's stiff. So for handhelds with sticks it actually protects them
do you use stick guards or something?
I'm not sure how the classic would fit. Might be loose in there as it doesn't need that stick protection
or does it have stick indents for the dmg
Nah. It's just actually like a hard case. So it just has room for them. The classic would def wobble around in there
I can take a pic in a sec
just put two handhelds in there lol
Haha. No joke if you flipped and reversed one you might fit two
But I think the water field would be much better. Plus I like that it's magnetic and you can charge while in case
youre telling me i should order the retro classic as well?........
Space in the back for hump. Space in the front for stick
So yeah. It'd wobble a little
Throw a cleaning cloth in front of it and it might be fine
I ordered this monstrosity because I was too lazy to look for a case. Man, itās ugly
We can only pray the final looks better
dude is your case wearing off the rubber on the joystick at all ?
I like have to be super careful removing my handheld from it
A lot slimmer than I was imagining I might go for this, can u pls take more angles
Looks ok so far
Quality looks amazing
Yeah. That sucks. Can at least comfort yourself in the fact that all these joysticks turn to crap eventually
Retro confirmed
It's a super nice case. And without joysticks you won't have to worry about that
Hey everybody zeelobby has moneys!
Yāall got anymore of them shipping notifications?
I'm a huge vertical fanboi. So I had to go big
Iāve really enjoyed the rp5 so i didnāt mind going for the vertical rp5
Yeah. I think it'll be a really solid device. Also one I won't mind just throwing in a pocket randomly. Haha. Way to scared to do that with my dmg
pocket dmg will never leave the house
I doubt we'll see anything til the review units hit. Think they said 18th
The dmg stays in a glass display case
Haha it's more my waiting in car or on airplane DMG
I dunno what game I would be playing with sticks on a 4ā 8:7 screen
GC mario golf
Unpopular opinion but I really liked the psp nub. Not as an analog stick but more as a soft dpad. It allowed me to do haomarus 10 dragon punch move in Sam Sho 2
Comfortably
Nah. My plan is to one day nub it
Already people modding it to be more nub-like
Can you try that move Iām talking about lmao
I copped one of them damn Pocket DMGs, but waiting for them to restock
As soon as I finish mine š. I've printed it but still need to polish it
That was from the original guy who did the mods. I want to do the concave buttons too at some point
Samurai shodown 2 - Haohmaru
I was able to do this most of the time on the psp nub. No so much on anything else
If I had a retro handheld YT channel, that would be my signature dpad test lmao
That and a certain combo in SF3
Doing a single dp or fireball isnāt a great dpad test imo
What kind of cursed input is that
Old school neo geo goodness
And I thought pretzel was bad
Neo Geo, good times
Well itās the 16th in China, wonder if the shipping dashboard will update for the classic today
As an aside this cracks me up on that page š
Normally, I would make a crack about _____ being inferior in Russia
But yeah
America
ah I think you mean Russia's 47th Oblast
Haha. Yeah. This line is great
what system can it play up to comfortably?
we dont know yet
ah cool im early
Yeah. It's a new chip. So reviewers will be the first to figure out what it's capable of
Starts April 27th
And most of us probably used DHL
But itāll definitely affect things if thereās escalation
"stop taking air-borne packages starting from April 27"
The wont take anything by sea starting today
Less than 2 weeks from cutoff
Where does Retroid ship from?
Ah I sure do love trade wars
But they're bringing factories that no one wants to work in back!
im gonna make the boomers work the factories since they want em so bad
Hey at least you guys got cheaper eggs right? š
don't worry, i'm sure they're genetically modifying dire wolves as we speak to lay eggs
god, if only, that should be a requirement, min age has to be like 60
Nothing is funnier than this
literally a "i want other peoples children to work the mines" moment
There have been some bangers
This is missing the funniest part of the survey - the 2% who answered āI currently work in a factoryā
So are all of these handheld manufacturures going to go out of business once the de minimis goes away?
I dont think people are going to spend hundreds on a brick
apparently the US is only 20-30% of the market, so no they will survive
Oh wow, wouldve guessed way higher
also the tariffs wont actually happen, just wait till next week when ALL the shippers suspend tariffs and derp derp shits his pants and revokes them
I mean that is still a pretty large amount
it could def hurt some, i imagine some segments of the market and some makers have bigger market shares here than others
Yeah 20% is a sizable chunk
20% is a massive chunk for a small business
Itās not a business ending percentage but it will be very painful
i would expect less releases, less risk, some layoffs
Iāve heard lots of the limited retro being loads better quality than the black out model
especially around western jobs like after sales support for english speaking countries and marketing/community
Eh. Just in the feels of the plastic. Otherwise they're identical
I imagine there's a skew as far as markets that buy budget handhelds vs premium ones
At this point I can't say which market buys the most of either tho
Losing 20-30% of your market is massive. Youāre also overlooking the fact that these companies will need to make up that loss revenue from other markets by a) raising prices across the board or b) halting development of new handhelds since they need to recoup R&D somewhere
I donāt think they have big R&D or other overhead costs.
Like OneX is totally boned
Considering a lot of their stuff falls above the de minimis rule
someone convince me not to buy this device pls
ever since i saw the kiwi color, it brought me back to my childhood
I'm really hoping they find a loophole somehow, the onexsugar dream needs to stay alive
And also they more likely will lower the price to sell more if they wanted to maintain the production scale.
wait a week for reviews, its a brand new chip, we dont know how it performs in real life yet
oh really?
yeah, literally no handhelds have this chip yet, and they botched their first showcase video so bad they took it down and made a new one
reviewers are getting them next week
WAIT
Or do what I did. Order now and cancel after reviews if it sucks. If not it might ship before tarrifs
Last dance and yolo it
haven't they been shipping all orders this past week? lol
or is that just for the flip 2?
just flip 2
Sick of seeing tiny face buttons on handheldsā¦this image here even makes it more obvious how tiny they are next to shrunken Saturn big buttons.
Yeah. Just flip 2. Supposedly classic starts the 18th I think
16th but no word yet of any shipments
With so many color options, it makes seeing which one retroid will ship first stressful
If it were available in black, as it should be, you know they'd go with that one. š¤£
Yeah I was firmly in the "don't pre-order retroid devices" camp but the tariffs forced my hand. But it needs to start shipping on time....I'm not a day one pre-order and I have no intention of paying $300 for a handheld like this
Yeah, if my bundle doesnāt ship soonish Iāll cancel and try to nab a rp5 or 406h in the marketplace or something
Good luck. Hoping everyone in the states gets theirs sooner than later.
Hoping they started shipping and just havent input the tracking info yet
I emailed them yesterday asking if it would ship today but havent heard back
And probably wont until late this evening at the earliest
It's a step in the right direction, let's hope they reply back
Got my DHL tracking info for my ayaneo pocket dmg. Getting my ideal black handheld š¤š„
Trump is, above all else, a bully. Those types crumble when pushed back upon.
I think he thought when he announced the tariffs that world leaders would come crawling to him and he would have an easy win. They havenāt and now his billionaire friends are mad about market crashes and he has to sign paperwork. Makes it less likely things actually are going to happen if he has to put any effort into things
I see no difference to how he tried to negotiate a ceasefire.
Run a country like deploying MMORPG hotfix.
#1339770266544508958 message Shipping for the Classic has been delayed to tomorrow
Keep an eye out for your shipment notifications tonight I guess, weāll find out which color goes first. I ordered Teal but I have a feeling Classic 6 will be shipped first
There's always the flip 2 š«
Noā¦? It doesnāt affect anyone who isnāt American.
Might hit retroid and ayn hard because they donāt seem to have as broad of an audience outside the USA vs anbernic, Ayaneo, powkiddy, etc
Might also kill OneX and Ayaneo. At least their higher windows devices
And as others have said, 20-30% is still significant. But we'll see I guess
Might not even be tarrifs at the end of the month
holy smudges
Does the bottom one have a screen protector on it?
Kinda ruins the comparison
Haha. Yeah. Not to mention the smudges
Like sure, I guess it will look better under all that
Almost seems like a sarcastic post, where under all that it wouldn't matter anyway š
That looks infinitely better to me than the classic or flip tbh
Bold statement. Square screen in a candy bar has always been somewhat of an odd duckling
The RGB30 we deserved.
They havenāt confirmed they are actually selling this model yet though right?
Yeah itās still kind of a homely looking device. Though Iād buy this one, I was so close to ordering the mini on more than one occasion but the massive bezels irked me
Yeah. Understandable. I thought the cube was a solid option as well. Sticks seem overkill on it for what the resolution is best for . But at least one doesn't hurt
It definitely might affect the cost to manufacturer, which would get passed through to all markets.
At least they prioritized the dpad
We don't really know the scale of manufacturing. They might have buyers in other countries, but the cost to produce a single unit goes up if they stop producing at scale when U.S. sales decline.
Everything gonna be an ayaneo IGG š
I donāt think anbernic has any problems hitting the order quantities for preferred pricing on components
Id assume budget devices will be more softly impacted. But there is no guarantee
When production volume decreases, the cost per unit almost always increases.
That increase might be softer for some devices... i.e. OLED screens might get hit hard by that economy of scale... while LCD might not.
Theoretically
Sure. It's all theoretical and contextual, but that's fairly common.
But many other factors determine the price
Only stuff like r+d costs - you hit the point where you arenāt getting a better deal on stuff like ICs at like 1000 units
If production volume goes down (significantly,) and price stays the same, I'll assume then that we're seeing less innovation in the space.
Same chipsets, same screens, same hall sticks, etc.
I am pretty sure they donāt have much overhead costs. They are not Apple Computer.
I donāt think a 20% reduction in sales in a rapidly growing market is going to tank r+d investments - weāre talking about maybe going back 6-12 months in terms of where the market is
No reason to panic imo
The retro handheld sphere will be fine
Not panic. I don't think tariffs kill the companies, but they don't continue forward without impact.
Something takes a hit when there's a significant reduction in sales.
Alternatively a slightly leaner sales environment will make these companies have to compete harder and everyone benefits
Instead of just putting any retro handheld on TikTok at a 100% markup and printing free money
Maybe. Without knowing volume and distribution of sales across countries, hard to speculate.
Their assembly line is very simple.
You mentioned 20% decrease in sales. Maybe it's more? Maybe it's less?
Well aliexpress only sells 11% in the USA
I would assume retro handhelds are fairly standard fare on Ali in terms of sales to USA vs elsewhere
And then most of the domestic market isnāt using Ali
So I would say 20% would be a maximum
𤷠Yeah, I just don't know. No visibility into their chain of sales.
My only point is that it's easy to speculate and impossible to know. And common laws of scale typically means a decrease in production volume typically yields an increase in cost per unit. Because we don't have hard numbers, that cost could be less than a dollar or twenty dollars or more.
Or cost per unit stays the same because it's essentially the same unit using the same components and innovation has slowed down.
I don't think you see any of these businesses fold, but you might see some devices just never make it to the production line, slight price increases in every market, or quality drops. Or not...
US is still a significant part of the gaming market, i'm a little worried for these companies too if US keeps those tariffs up
oh yeah game devs are cooked but that doesn't really affect retro stuff, those games are long finished
i don't know how you're getting 20% but it could easily be like 50% imo
one nice thing about this hobby is as much as some people like to collect newer and newer recycled phones with integrated controls you can play the same stuff with a fb marketplace thinkpad and an sn 30 pro
I wasn't the one who brought in the 20% number so I have no idea where it was sourced from
the only 'real' numbers I've seen (which still could be lies) are that only 11% of aliexpress sales go to the USA
and that's the best data we have imo
you mean in general or for handhelds
America is not 50% of the market lol
Nowhere close lol
I think I was just triggered by how definitive your statement was -- "It doesn't affect anyone who isn't American."
I agree America is nowhere near 50%, probably not even 30%. But even if it was 10%, it'll trickle down somewhere.
a 10% drop in an industry that's probably doubling sales every year as these emulator handhelds take off is pretty close to negligble
of the retro handheld market? what makes you so sure? every chat has just been full of US tariffs talk these past weeks
retro gaming is blowing up
unfortunately the english language internet is a very 'america assumed default' place
Still hypothetical. Tariffs will hurt other business which could reduce purchasing power of retro handheld buyers globally.
Incredibly complex landscape. Decreases in sales trickle down.
Cuz people who arenāt from the US donāt give a rats ass about the tariffs
I'm not being doom and gloom. It may mean a difference in pennies. But it's never negligible.
If I were from a different country I wouldnāt talk about tariffs
Havent heard anything, but if they dont release and ship it this week its kind of moot, going to cost like $500
exactly my point
only US people talk about this, and every chat is full of it
you're on an american server
Ever heard of the vocal minority
I mean here and on reddit I don't think it's a minority
but it's not anywhere near close to a representative sample of the world either
Thatās the point Iām trying to make
Which nationality/country do you think is the biggest in the Retro scene outside of China?
10% is a wild figure as even for regular game consoles the US is like a third of the market
regular game consoles are expensive and lock you in to buying expensive games
poorer countries meanwhile love emulation
Poor countries love the R36s. They aren't buying Retroid or AYN stuff.
On the flip side, countries that are more well off have more disposable income to purchase the more expensive handhelds
I just don't see the market for Ayaneo products. They feel stuck in the middle.
Too underpowered to compete with Steam Decks
Too expensive
It feels like a glorified vanity project company
Would you rather pay $500 for a game system with $80 games?
Or a $150 handheld that can play pretty much any game release before the year 2000
Retroid or AYN arenāt luxury brand.
Their pc handhelds outperform the steam deck though
Relatively speaking they are compared to other companies
to "poor" countries they are.
alright so let's look at the entire gaming industry and not just consoles...
Back to my main point from earlier... no one knows.
Iād consider China is poor in general but they can afford current gen consoles or iPhone.
Its not just $150, you have to buy all the games you want to play and digitize them yourself
If Americans stop buying retro devices expect to see more R36s, RK3566 and budget devices being developed.
...this is what happens while we all patiently wait for Stubbs to get that review unit in. š
the impression I got is that ayaneo primarily sells domestically in china
where they are seen as a luxury brand, not overpriced shit with no headphone jack
Ayaneo has a bad rep in China
right, buy them
I mean you can just buy them all at once from those nice folks at kinhank
I don't know how they got those licensing deals
to be able to offer them so cheap
Rule #1 of emulation club
yup
r36s is considered a quality handheld around here compared to other no-brand handhelds
This statement is so wrong. Chinese aren't as rich as Westerners but in no way are they poor. Also not everyone buys iphones, some prefer chinese phones. many also buy 2nd hand iphones.
child labor is more rampant there tho
(not that America doesn't use child labor already)
How come we donāt get sexy outside photos of the classic like we got for the flip ?? All weāve had of a real unit is the dodgy videos
Consider the wage level in China and think about the iPhone sales figure in China.
can't believe this is the comment that got me to reach a level up
Many people borrow money to buy iphones. Many people buy 2nd hand iphones. iphones is a symbol status.
it's half that and half that iphones are more convenient for non-tech users
That was my whole point. They aināt rich but they willing to spend a fortune on something they think is good.
In China its 100% symbol status.
Yea I get what your saying but my point is China isn't that poor. Iphone is worth like one month salary in China
There are some poor countries where it will take them a year to save up
Iām Canadian though š
According to Chinese Gov official statistics their monthly wages was around $400 before tax.
That is wrong. I don't know where you got that number.
Average month salary of blue collar worker is like 7k-10k Yuan which is arond 1k USD. Skilled workers obviously pay more
Iām honestly just a weirdo. No sticks on the classic, and I donāt like the flip in general. Too much empty space on the bottom and the 16:9 or whatever top just looks bizarro land to my eyes.
with the flip 3 i'm hoping for a lower second screen
Salary is only half of the equation, gotta account for CoL
I can make a million dollars in a year but if the CoL is billions then Iām not really well off arenāt I
MagicX will do it
wouldn't col make Chinese have more disposable income lol. They definitely have lower col
Evidence would be nice too
Does MagicX make handhelds or just mockup concepts
Thatās was from their Official Bureau of Statistics. But the figure was after tax and social security.
Itās nice to have proof instead of just throwing numbers around š
I gotta look but I think those stats are bullshit. My statements were based on 1st hand experience living in China.
I am so reluctant to put non English content here
Currently just mockups š
It was published on Jan 2025.
Roflcopter
Google ai?
Bro pulled out ai results
I will delete it after a while
Official stats are off because many chinese under report to avoid tax. Alot of cash business
lol
Lmao
Google knows better?
Based on my experience its around 1k USD a month for most city in china
I don't know why you guys sound so skeptical
1k isn't alot
I have to delete it. Other people are not interested in this topic.
if it's on the internet, it has to be true
income or living expenses?
i cringe whenever i get people sending me stuff from social media regarding childcare, health, and what not from random shills spouting nonsense. Apparently science is fake news that is told what we want to hear bc the doctors/scientists won't make any money otherwise
Again income is only half of the equation
Income. They make around 7k-10k Yuan.
Whatās the cost of living
Thatās the official figure. And I donāt think they have any incentive to understate the e figure.
oh i have no idea whether it's accurate or not, just a fun jab of whenever someone pulls anything off of the internet. Applies to myself as well ā¤ļø
says " However, the average salary in 38 Chinese cities was $1,430 USD per month in Q2 2023."
Don't know if you accept this
now iam curious to know the average salary for someone in america
This one is by industry
By region
No cost of living?
Me and Grav were discussing income only
Hes saying $400 USD, I'm saying 1k
Income means nothing if you donāt compare it to col
Exactly. 1K a month with free healthcare, heavily subsidized housing. Mass public transit. Etc.
cost of living is obviously can't be more than America
My income is $50K a year
And thatās comfortable for me
How many other Americans could say the same tho
When one of my 2 monthly paychecks evaporates into insurance and mortgage. Lol
Like I said before, I can make millions in annual income
Which without context is really good
But if cost of living is in the billions
Thatās not so good after all
But then you have to live in san francisco. And your still living paycheck to paycheck. Lol
Right???
You got a point
$50K a year would not work in San Fran
COL is cheaper in China compared to USA. Thats all we need to know lol
Lol
Haha. Accurate
āTrust me broā
Comon do we need stats for COL in china...
Everybody knows USA is expensive as shit
The USA is not china
USA/western countries are obviously more expensive
If you wanna be accurate then yeah we need Col stats
If it wasn't. Half the population would just die tomorrow with that salary
We just need to know "general". Not exact. COL is cheaper in China.
So you're telling me USA is cheaper to live in than China?
Why don't you prove me wrong then because you're the one refuting my claims
Gonna be hard to find a definitive answer
Hard to know without knowing China Col š
There. 45% lower
China is not N.korea. Anybody can visit and see for themselves lol
What's it based on? Is it accurate? Who knows. But it's a point of reference compared to none in the other direction
Rent is 60% lower. which isn't shocking. Considering housing is gov subsidized
Youād be a fool to take what a censor happy government says at face value
Free healthcare. Free public transit
Lol. "Give me proof!" "It's lies"
Ok bro
Iām not saying itās lies
Those are very easy to verify facts dude
You seem to be implying my friend
But Chinese can afford Retroid Pocket right?
Definitely.
Of course. Cause they aren't broke slave workers like a lot of the west assumes they still are
Factory workers make decent money compared to many jobs in China. It just super soul sucking and degrading.
What they've done is impressive
Cand wait to go to my US factory š
Remember to bring a MAGA hat
as a european i'm always shocked by US grocery prices
Yeah. We do some wild shit. We subsidize farmers. But instead of attaching strings to it that require them to keep their prices low, we just kinda let them go wild
Capitalism baby
but i need muh white sugar/cake bread
is corn bread still popular by any chance
german discount grocery stores even successfully expanded to US (aldi and lidl)
Corn bread and chili
Haha. Yeah. I have family who shops exclusively at aldi
hopefully one day when they stop treating visitors (particularly non-white folks) like criminals I'd like to try it out
meanwhile walmart tried to expand to germany and it was a failure
Discount is a bold word lol
Iāve got at least a dozen groceries locally that are far cheaper than aldis
Maybe itās just a product of being rural but
well in germany they are discount stores but that's interesting
They're still generally cheaper than most big grocery stores
Itās more so the place white girls go to get their groceries š
Like Starbucks
Or target
tbh all the other grocery stores here in germany mostly have the exact same prices as aldi and lidl as long as you buy the store brands
I find Aldi/Lidl store brands to be better quality than something like Tesco's
If you want a good grocer you wanna look for the small chain ones
They don't really exist here lol
We got two around here and theyāre great
At least nowhere close
If itās produce the local Mexican and Vietnamese stores are dirt cheap
Yeah all I got near my area is a meijer, Walmart, and aldi
Walmart tried in my small town but they have a terrible reputation
Walmart really fell off
If I ever go to the States, I'd like to visit a Walmart at least once
I've heard you can buy almost anything there
Yeah I mean selection too
The only reason I go there is for toiletries and sd cards
They only sell the shit thatās popular
Thereās nothing new or āexoticā there
Even in the super big stores?
No idea
Donāt care for Walmart enough to seek one out
My local hyvee has tons of cool and fun shit
Not to mention selling locally made products
Which is a practice Iāll support any day
walmart probably has the worst bakery section of any grocery store I have ever visited
it often has some produce and import foods that I can't find at my other grocery options though
US only sells cake anyway
Given the sugar content of US "bread" it would be classified as cake in Europe tho
Idk about yours but my walmart's cookie cakes are fire
Commercial bread in the US... Oh yes
Id smash some kings Hawaiian rn
Depends on the brand tbh, there's a lot of options
Bread in Asia is even more sugary than yankee bread.
Definitely. There are lots of options, typically.
But yeah. Aldi is cheaper here than most chains.
Excluding random mom and pop grocery stores of which like 4 still exist
Walmart has replaced most
Walmart is a blight
carbohydrates still convert to glucose in the body anyway so does it really matter š
Honestly so long as you're not eating bread by the loaf the sugar content shouldn't matter that much, 2 slices would be around 4g of sugar
All food is just atoms so at the end of the day it doesnāt really matter
I'm a pie guy and the pies at walmart are like you took a mcdonalds pie and left it on the counter for 48 hours
nowhere near the quality of the ones at superstore
So is crack cocaine
And uranium, which has a super high caloric count
Infinite food hack, but now youāre radioactive
You will never have to eat again as long as you live
checks in to see if anyoneās gotten a shipment notification yet
finds out what the cost of living is in China and the amount of sugar in bread
Those cheap sugar cookies are the best. The ones that come with sprinkles on a pack of 12
Starving for news, so we talk about food
Any reviewers have theirs soon?
Kinda, given how direct sugar intake spikes your blood sugar levels, while breaking down stuff (darker bread or even white one not full of sugar) takes some energy and generally will keep you filled for longer.
Also sweetened bread tastes like ass.
asking the real questions.... for real, even a early impressions video
also fructose (which is in most added sugars) is potentially worse for you than glucose
speaking of bread in asia, if you have an 85c bakery near you, omg so good. check it out if you havent
its a taiwanese bakery chain
Haha thatās one of the places I had in mind. I stayed in Taiwan for 5 months a long time agoā¦love that place.
Though it was difficult to find bread that wasnāt super sweet
everyone has their own levels of what they consider sweet, but i have tried like almost everything there and from what i select, its on the less sweet side of what they offer. in general i dont like sweet, and I'm ok with their low sweet options
plus they have savory breads
best kinda of cake is ice cream cake though.... no counters allowed
We subsidize them to make cornāyou know, the food we canāt actually digestāand then we slap corn in everything and wonder why weāre all constantly getting fat and shitting our brains out.
Merica!
No this is socioeconomic state of china thread
Smh
My head
is he looking for bread?
No heās looking for hall sticks to put in his switch 2

I actually got so antsy waiting for the Classic to ship, I ordered a TrimUI Brick.
RP Classic Mini
Excellent choice
Yea brick is great
ill be selling off some devices soon and one of the ones ill be keeping for sure is the brick. its a really good device.
Brick is my favourite edc device
The Brick is what made me want to get a Pocket Classic. I play it and just think that itād be great to have a larger screen with similar high resolution
Yeah, I'm stoked. I don't anticipate the Classic being pocketable and that's not why I ordered one.
Might actually finally set up Syncthing when I have both the Brick and Classic in hand.
Never felt the urge.
hmm, brick running what os?
Iām still waiting on an OS for my brick that I can use syncthing with
I found a Github repo of tools yesterday that had Syncthing for Crossmix.
But I love MinUI, so want to try Next/PakUI, too! š¤·
I can speak at length about the development of French warship construction during the early industrial age
Hm... tell me more.
Following the Franco-Prussian war and collapse of the second empire French naval policy shifted from direct competition with the British royal navy in capital ship numbers to a more nuanced approach which is known as the Juene Ecole (young school) under this doctrine, which suggests that an enemy battle line could be countered with many small torpedo boats and large cruisers to both defend your coastline (the torpedo boats) and devastate the commerce of your enemy (the cruisers)
As a result the French navy had a long pause in major capital ship construction, building a handful of ships relative to other powers. It was only in the 1890s that this shifted with France beginning construction of a series of battleships which ranged from the bizarre to the eccentric (if you like steampunk look up French predreadnoughts) and largely obsolete compared to foreign designs.
This would begin to change in the 1900s though as France introduced a series of highly capable innovative designs in large coherent classes the balance was redressed somewhat.
However the French lost the plot somewhat afterwards, with the navy sticking with the predresdnought concept after the introduction of the all big gun HMS dreadnought in the royal navy. Franceās first dresdnoughts would have much shorter ranged guns than the ships in other navies due to a belief that battle ranges would be quite short.
Again realizing they are falling behind the French began a series of very odd ships leading into the First World War featuring quadruple turrets and coal as armor. The war caused a total stop in French warship construction and the nation would slowly build up a modern fleet once again during the interwar years. A fleet which would serve France poorly in the opening phases of the Second World War as the Germans generally kept on land.
Massive summation of a very complicated and at times comical part of history
How bought that kindlefetch script that lets you find any book without Amazon's ecosystem! Pretty sweet!
š¤ I was thinking about getting an Onyx Boox Palma last year and moving from physical books to eBooks. I didn't pull the trigger, though.
Armored cruiser Dupuy de Lome, just a steampunk fever dream
i personally run knulli, but mostly cause the folder structure works well with how i sync saves across multiple devices running emulation station/batocera based file structures and naming conventions. also the working sleep function, but i think thats been added to pakui or nextui.
They also had CURVES
@gaunt cargo
Thatās the only reason I havenāt gotten a brick. 3.5ā is pushing it for me, so 3.2 is just probably not gonna cut it. I still want one though. Dammit.
I love my brick, but I yearn for active cooling, a slightly larger screen, & more power!!! The Classic seems to fit all my needs for its use case
I'm simpatico with you on this one.
I adore the brick - kind of wish it was a dud, as I don't think I'd be hooked on the retro scene as much as I am - I have a cube XX and like it, but I don't use or fawn over it like the brick.
But I want something bigger when I'm not out and about and I'm an absolute sucker for anything OLED.
Oh AWESOME!
Just the 4GB versions are limited then? Or did they remove limitation entirely now
Itāll probably be similar how the 2S 3GB version went out of stock way earlier than the 4GB did
Chris said he would ask if anything is limited then posted that. Iām still not šÆ on the 4gb but kind of sounds they are staying?
This was before he asked his team
Is there anyone here who got a 4GB version? ...and why not spend the extra 10 USD for more storage and RAM? Or is it more of a delta between versions in other countries?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for offering more selection at different price points, and I'm appreciative of the small margins we have, especially at the twilight of all this stupid tarrif bullshit... But a 129 to 119 difference in price for 50% more RAM and double the internal storage? I'm honestly curious as to the situations where you give those additions up when you're already 119 dollars into the whole thing.
In case anyone is interested, I made this list of GB/GBC Homebrew/Aftermarket games.
Prepare yourselves for your RPC!
NO DOWNLOAD LINKS!
Just a list of game names
These should all be new GB/GBC games NOT romhacks, though I have those as well, but not making a list, as there are thousands in my collection. My brain would explode typing it all. LOL (forgive any errors, or romhacks that may have slipped into the list. I am tired.)
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
It's almost 9am in China. First person to receive their shipping notification gets a Bluey sticker
I get decision paralysis with a list of 20 games. Here you are dropping 200+. Lol
Cool! I'm glad they decided against the limited thing
I also wonder what happened to D1100 Flip 2?
Canadian dollar has tanked so $10 + $15 shipping, any extras like a case and screen protector, itās over $220 CAD.
Oh man. They were gonna make them limited runs
Oof
Glad they didn't. Would have been another PR thing
Moose dollars
Makes sense to eventually drop the lower models at some point tho
Maybe not for the flip
Any shipping updates from reviewers??
Previews can't come fast enough. All this political shit and the onslaught of bad news upon bad news has me thirsting hard for some escapism that only a new gadget can provide; this thing can suck and I still need it bad just to have something to look forward to right now.
Sadly the escapism is being affected hard by the outside world
Yep thatās almost what I paid. Oh well still felt like a good purchase š
Yep. Damn near impenetrable. I've been doing everything to avoid the news and goings on for some mental health/reprieve and it's just impossible. But I actually really dig all the retro reviews and the live streams on new gadgets and get triply excited if I put down the cash on said gadgets.
Since this will be the last such purchase for possibly a long time given the insanity over here, I'm trying to savor obsessing over this before going back to the non-stop slugfest of horrible news and terrible things happening-all-the-time-you-can't-avoid.
Checking my email
Keep saying cube is op
Still think the flip makes more sense in the long run for my EDC tho
Yea, guess it really depends for the individual, do you use front pocket, back pocket, backpack etc
Mini with the full screen replacement done seems like it would be the best of a lot of worlds tbh
Its a nice option for sure, tough to decide between the mini, classic, and flip
horizontal, vertical and clamshell. The eternal debate
probably completely down to preference tbh
Mini with screen replacement will be god tier retro handheld
small, good battery, great screen, plenty of power
I only wish it was low profile like the 405m, more pocketable
but it's not bad as is, so I can't really even complain
Yeah worth it for those nice sticks they use but it would be nice for sure
Well youāre not first but you still get a Bluey sticker
i have the regular rg cube and this device will make that obsolete. the cube is really comfy and the reg version is pretty powerful, enough to handle a lot of stuff that h700 devices like the cubexx cant such as modern cave arcade games. however, theres no real reason to play it when i can just play on an odin 2 at home, or the classic outside the house. the cube design is just not pocketable between the sticks and the grip
I just use a pocket period. So anything without pokey sticks is a plus
Yeah. I just got a face plate that slides on. Works pretty well for the pocket. Meant more the shorter and squatter form makes great ergos
I spent an entire minute trying to figure out what a "pocket period" was
Retriod just emailed me and told me that they are shipping my replacement pocket mini screen with my classic 6.
Loyalty pays off!
Got tracking for classic 6 button to uk 4px.
Great. Ordered on the first day?
Hope some reviewers get theirs soon
when embargo end, they will
Whenās that
Yes
I ordered around two weeks later. I can only wish that they move fast.
Sounds like the classic 6 is getting shipped first. What was your order no.?
(First 4 digits)
Sorry not supplying that but got order confirmation 2 mins after it went live
Fair play, when did it go live? I thought it was still radio silence
Pre sales
around a month ago
Ah weird, I ordered the retro the minute it went to pre order but I've had nothing from 4px
I ordered late but got the flip 2 combo so fingers crossed I get a bit up in the queue
When did you order?
I bet they are sending out the American stuff first
I ordered early and still nothing
April 11th - when the tarriff thing ramped up.
Well I'm 4px to the uk too so I was hoping I'd be the same but I guess not
Thatās my hope. One last āAmericans get the best tech dealsā before we piss that legacy completely away. These tarrifs wonāt last forever, but the deals we yanks got are probably gone for good now.
I ordered a bundle on the 7th and havenāt heard anything yet either
I fat fingered my email address and support never managed to correct it, so Iām somewhat in the dark on shipment but I think the order tracker will sort me
My order defaulted to 4px though I swear I selected the faster option at least twice
I figure Iām giving my order a few more days and if it hasnāt shipped Iāll cancel and try to nab a flip and classic on the marketplace
Maybe you can check your order status in their official site.
I ordered pkmn yellow in the first 30 minutes of sales. DHL. No updates yet
The 6 button one seems like it may be going out first
The only person in this server who has gotten a shipping notification is from the UK
Yeah I don't know about that order form, I suspect something is bust. My e-mail was misspelled and I corrected it multiple times and when I hit the confirm button I got nothin'... So it never got the proper e-mail to send me updates.
That's what I'm doing, support sent a screenshot of my order and I found the order number on there - the site seems to track it. As of this morning it's still 'processing'
I got the email but nothing else since then. It could be that the system is struggling with presumably a ton of Americans placing orders hoping to avoid tariffs
They seem to be really good at letting people know where stuff is. I think it's cool that they are updating a delivery dashboard.
You can get more details of your order here, though I don't know how accurate it is in the actual order process, it probably just moves from 'pre-order' to 'shipped'
That thing has never worked for me either
Retroid gave me two orders numbers and PayPal gave me an order number and none of them work
If the order number is something like HQ-M6696239 you need to remove the HQ- and just put the last part of the number in.
For me I had to figure out what the misspelled e-mail was. It put in @gail.com instead of @gmail.com
There's a few in the retroid discord saying the classic 6 has started shipping
us & uk
at least its unlikely your order details like your address will be send to [email protected]
This is true
Fair point! Just appreciative that they're trying to get all of this done in record time because of all of this stupidity. As I said last night, I don't care if this device is shit. Just give me something to enjoy and obsess over for a few days in this consistant barrage of really-bad/horrid-news
I originally went with the PKM Yellow as I liked the look of it. But then I realized it was Pokemon themed so got it changed to Teal.
I don't mind Pokemon, but I never got into it. Had a Pokemon 3DS and consistantly had people come up and tell me pokemon stuff that I didn't understand.
They all look good. Its really hard to pick one this time.
That worked thanks, says my order is preparing for processing so I guess I am still a ways out from shipping. Anybody know how long it takes 4pl to go from "it is on a boat heading to the states" to actually being in the states? Trying to get a rough idea of when I should cancel the order if it hasnt shipped by.
In my experience, about 5 businesses days
I say this knowing everything changes every hour, but I think they'll be fine if they get this on a boat/plane by May 2nd. While there is some debate on if you have to receive it by May 2nd or have it shipped by May 2nd I think it is the latter. What I am sure about is that this tariff stuff is going to be fuckin' chaos - absolute chaos - on the entities and companies enforcing it in the US.
Money changing hands like this, who charges it, how payments are processed, who handles errors of payment, remediates conflicts and returns, etc. all need to be sorted out and it won't be done by May 2nd.
That isn't to say we won't have tarriffs May 2nd, we probably will be, but I think it unlikely that they'll be pipin' hot about splitting hairs on a law byline that is in such heavy debate - they'll probably let anything shipped from China through tarriff free and start calculating tarrifs at the shipping origins rather than destinations.
Just got a shipping notification.
US, pkmn yellow color, order number in 2232 range, DHL
Nice! Did you just order the classic or the combo? What region of the states?
Only the classic. I don't think region matters
Sorry, better question should have been 'when did you order?'
Give myself a bit of wiggle room and Iāll say if it hasnāt shipped by like the 24th Iāll cancel thank you very much
Within the first half hour of pre orders on March 17
Honestly thatās the main reason I think the tariffs will be cancelled, the tangerine in chief would have to do actual work to make it happen, which he doesnāt want to do and no one else in his admin seems capable of doing
I hope you're right, but the man leans into his bad decisions like a religion. Irreparable damage has already been done IMO.
I guess as long as the holiday and everything else doesn't mess anything up, I'd imagine mine getting here around Monday or Tuesday.
Awesome. Thanks for the info! Can't wait to hear what you think about it. As I said before the PKM yellow looks the best IMO but I didn't want people thinking I'm a pokemon stan when I don't know it that well.
They don't have an estimate. I'm just going based on previous orders
I'm not really much into PokƩmon. It's just the color I had growing up
Itās what happens when a man who clearly failed at everything he has ever done was rich enough to avoid consequences, and surrounded himself with yes men who nod along and blame other people for his incompetence. At this point not sure whatās going on in his head aside from anger, ego and thoughts of McDonaldās
I had a pokemon 3DS, it was a weird time because gaming wasn't totally 100% accepted during that time but Pokemon was so big you'd get avid Pokemon players who played no other video games.
A few times I was playing on a subway when I lived in a city I had a Pokemon fan come up and start a convo and it just was awkward, me trying to connect on being into video games but not being able to translate any of the details stuff they were talking about. Felt like a pokemon poser.
I guess I'm relatively comfortable discussing games I don't know much about. I used to run a gaming organization so I was in that situation a ton
RG40xxv mogs the Retroid classic
Why do no YouTube reviewers have this console yet
Also the being judged thing is meh. Honestly not a big idea when it comes to game. Much worse things to be judged over. I used to just set up consoles publicly, particularly at colleges with multiple controllers inviting people to join. Cool way to meet new people
Because they only started shipping to reviewers like Tuesday
Likely putting the finishing touches on the OS
2238 here. Guess I got about 6 thousand to go til mine XD
Oh I wasn't judged or anything, it's a me thing; got pretty major/acute social anxiety so I cut out anything that doesn't let me engage on my own terms.
Fair enough. I feel you there. Though I guess for me it's less about media and more about presentation but I get the feeling
In fact public gaming setups were helpful for me as an easier way to chat with strangers since there was a "mutual thing" going on where you can just be silent sometimes
It's something I've been recommending to people going to college if they're having trouble meeting people
The power of a wii, smash Bros, and a handful of controllers sitting out is amazing
I'd imagine. I was always jealous of that to be honest - lived in very rural areas and in a time where being into video games was something you did not want other people to know. When stuff like MTG came around I had no one I knew that played it, only cities and stuff had meetups, but I was always absolutely stunned when people openly admitted and bonded over video games
To be fair I post about the French navy yesterday, we have a decent variety of off topics if nothing else
We have an off topic channel if you werenāt aware
Yeah. That's where handhelds are actually discussed
Um actually the amount of sugar added to the average loaf of bread has a direct correlation to the performance of Beetle on the Retroid Classic
This man gets science
TIL
Do we consider sourdough to be 'average'? I see the Classic as a sourdough variant. Sourdough bread is the deepest of blacks and brightest of color OLED screens in the bread world.
"Sourdough, the OLED of breads"
YOU CAN'T PUT ME IN OFFTOPIC SOURDOUGH HAS SUGAR AND SUGAR = BETTLE PERFORMANCE ON THE RP CLASSIC
damn, that is heart breaking but the reality we're facing
Damnet my teal!
Yo. That's pretty wild
I mean good on them for insuring they get some through
But crazy to just have half the line not make it
I am so sad I do not want another color I want Kiwi..... I had a kiwi gbc. I am probably going to cancel now...
Yeah, it sucks. I was head strong on the teal.
So thanks for posting this, since Retroid doesn't have my proper e-mail I wouldn't have gotten this notification and my shipment wouldn't have gone through given the colorway.
Same here, teal looked awesome. Probably going to cancel my bundle now
I mean. Would they not notify you through their webstore email?
Man, I really don't know what color to switch to. I think Teal, Berry, and Kiwi are the only acceptable colors
Presumably those are the colors that sold the least, which is why they are being shipped last. Why does everybody have bad taste except for me
The webstore e-mail wouldn't change from a default '@gail.com' e-mail apparently, and they forgot to reset it to gmail.com. I was manually going into the order update page and saying my e-mail was '[email protected]' to see the status of my order.
Just cancelled my kiwi. I don't know how it will work with the bundle but I will let everyone know.
A.k.a. I got no e-mail confirmation from retroid given the wrong e-mail address and had to talk to support for updates.
That's terrible. All the best colors.
I wonder how many people will cancel if their colorway isn't available. It sucks, but I'll take another colorway if I can get the device.
@oak blade is going to be so sad he was also hyped for the kiwi
Canāt they just send the shell later and let the user assemble it.
Oh yeah. That's right. You could probably email support with the actual full email and see if they update it
You just email retroid sales and ask for a cancellation right?
How can they send later when no shipping service is accepting orders heading to the US?
Like never?
Until something changes, seems like it
It's a clusterfuuuuuuuuuuu
Just reply to your order email
trade warrrssss
I am still pretty clueless about the new policy. If tariffs are charged based on parcel value then I think the tariff on plastic shell should be cheap? And if the tariff things are sorted then someone will be willing to ship them?
That's the problem. For under $800 it's 30% or a flat fee
Might be higher now
In theory, even if it did ship, that shell could be subject to tarrifs, a.k.a. a 75 USD plus surcharge. Then you have to deal with some people bricking their Classic with the shell swap
So find a distributor in the US and send it in one lot?
Over $800 and it's like 145% now
Under $800 is like the better exception
And then shipper picks whether it's percentage or flat fee for all their items for a month. Which is just fucking wild. Lol
Like it makes sense to me that they'll simply just stop shipping
Well, asked for my order to be cancelled and now I guess I am looking for alternatives.
I think if the trade war thing are sorted later Retroid can offer to sell shell in different color at a discount.
Then everyoneās happy
Unless they are like the mini which the front side is stick to the screen hmmmmm
Alternatives as in 'alternative to a vert handheld' or 'alternative colorway'
Alternatives as in small android handheld for edc
I really cannot decide on a new color. I think they are all worse
Find friends living in neighbouring non-tariffed countries and get them to ship it from there.
The retro is fine. Not special like the other colors but fine. I may go back to PKM yellow and just deal with the pokemon association with it
Japan and South Korea seem to be the least affected
"Japan and South Korea seem to be the least affected" [at this exact moment in time. That will probably change in the next week. Or day. Hour?]
I love Pokemon but for some reason feel no attachment to that colorway
I don't like associating with a franchise I don't know anything about (not that I have anything against pokemon, wish I was into it, but I'm not).
But I want the console more than the colorway so....
I dunno. I love yellow verticals
I just don't like how it is two different colors. It is so gaudy
Even when not pokemon associated. I think my miyoo mini yellow is my fav looking handheld so far
Yeah. True
I love that shade of miyoo mini flip yellow. It's so dull... and beautiful.
I had a pokemon GBC. So it was an auto buy for me

I actually had plans to dye a miyoo. And then when they dropped it I was like phew. Lol
I had a pokemon 3ds but it always felt awkward when a pokemon fan came up to me when playing it and tried talking about pokemon stuff I didn't understand.
I think the yellow front with a retro back swap would be pretty fire
Why did they not lead with that? My main gripe on the mini was ALWAYS 'I wish the screen took up more space'. Like I get the 4:3 ratio want, but not enough to murder a perfectly good screen and an aesthetic that looks a billion times better without pointless bezels covering them up.
I would have totally bought a mini if it came out of the gate like that.
So are new minis shipping with that screen? Or just the people with the original mini's that complained?
Yea I may have too
I donāt think they have minis for sale currently, just shipping the replacement covers
Advance Wars: Shipping Strike
Well I hope they redo it maybe with a G2 processor in it. In that form it would be my next big want, after this tarriff thing blows over.
I dunno about that, Retro, Pokemon, and Atomic Purple are all great. Plus Saturn has some nice utility.
That looks so much better, dunno why they hid a portion of the screen
I wonder if adding the screen protector and case added to the packing time
They gave the people what they wanted; to not see black bars
I'm more interested in the internal dialogue they had on that design. Like who was the person or entity that was like 'we need to take this screen and cover it up with bezels'. If someone championed that, they've probably done a bit of sweating as of late.
It's just so weird! It's an OLED screen! Playing 4:3 content on that screen with OLED is going to look exactly the same as having black bezels over it! I know some colorways aren't black, but that should have taken a back seat to covering up part of the most important bit of the handheld you are selling.
I can already tell you thereās a not-small number of buyers who are still somehow championing that Retroid did the right move. Which is absurdly stupid.
Design by committee no doubt
Like, not even saying āit makes sense why they did it, and it looks fine anywaysā.
Literally just āthey were right to do so, the screen should be covered because that aspect ratio is badā.
Like, itās literally just people somehow spitefully hating a non-4:3 screen enough to say that pretending itās 4:3 is better.
i wanna order it right meow but i also wanna see a review before i do lol š¦
Damn, in addition to being bad news for those who ordered these colors, it also means that it pushes the rest of us down the queue who had orders for the colorways that they are shipping out
As someone who owns the Mini, people buying it was less to do about the screen size/aspect ratio and more about the resolution. The supposed 1280x960 resolution was a game changer for integer scaling. But of course, we eventually found out that it was a lie.
4:3 with perfect 4x integer scale for 240p consoles, while also having great integer scaling for GBA with very little screen loss. It was suppose to be great.
yeah, it's the interpolation that's a huge part of the problem, plus why not give people the choice on what aspect ratio to run and make the full screen available? doesn't make sense
Who knows
so did they not want money by covering the screen up initially? Dumb af
NGL if they marketed the Mini with the whole screen vs the 1280x960, I wouldnāt have bought the Mini at all
That screen doesnāt integer scale as nicely as a theoretical 1280x960
Fair point / that makes sense. But I think they probably would have sold more minis in general if they did the full screen. While your reasons are sound, I think more people prefer the full screen. I mean hell, we're all here in this sub for that screen on the classic.
Maybe. Weāll never know
I mentioned this in the rp mini chat but if you're fine with a little bit of overscan, the screen integer scales with a lot of 4:3 systems quite nicely
wouldn't the black screen just blend into the handheld if you had bars from playing 4:3 content?
Yeah I saw. Iām keeping the original Mini screen on mine
No grey option. Only black
Yes but you would lose a lot if you integer scale
Pretty much the only major consoles that would look fairly sized integer scaled on a 1240x1080 screen is NES, SNES, GBA, GB/GBC
now show what it looks like with overscan enabled
I ain't touching overscan
overscan is based
But yeah. If I bought the classic, I would literally use it only for SNES, GBA, and GBC
rip those 10 horizontal pixels
I personally don't care about integer scaling at these resolutions/dpi. Less than 300 or 350 dpi I do notice, but not at 400+
very fair point
And an oled screen will blend those bezels in quite nicely (for me at least)
I'll notice the shimmering
Heck. I noticed things looking off on the RP Mini even before the whole fake resolution situation got properly revealed
Yeah, some people seem more sensitive to it than others. I'm thankful I can't notice it as it's the sort of thing that would drive me batty.
reminds me how i notice juddering happen when watching a 24hz movie on a 60hz display but others don't see anything wrong with it
I have no idea what PPI is required for me to not notice issues. But with the Mini (which was 400+) I noticed it
Yup, in fact itāll be better for 480p and 240p stuff using overscan than the current screen, since itāll actually be integer scaled and not a fake resolution being rendered wrong.
On the cubexx I need integer scaling. The cube is like 250dpi.
Someone make a 500/600 PPI screen pls.
wait for handheld companies to source that 4k 5" screen from that one sony phone
Well they have to sell this now
That looks so good
Idk why it wasn't that way from the beginning
Didn't Retroid announce they were partnering with a manufacturer to develop custom OLED screens?
I still think it was the stupidest move Iāve ever seen any company do, for the sheer fact that they made a controversy that couldāve been entirely avoided.
This is outright better than the 4:3 one, even ignoring what we now know.
because "muh 4:3 ratio"
Yes, for a V2 that would still be expected no less than a year from now.
personally, I don't think developing a custom screen is a good use of their resources (right now at least) but what do I know lol
If the 4:3 was actual 1280x960, 1280x960 would be better than 1240x1080 for integer scaling
I agree, but theyāre the ones doing it so screw it.
Are they doing it though !?
10/10 would buy if they made a 4-5" 1280x960 screen
Yeah, and 31:27 would be better for Gameboy and 8:7 stuff so Iād enjoy that more, and now we can add the fact we currently know itās outright better for integer scaling than the current screen.
šŖ talk to me when they make a screen with rg552's resolution but smaller
Since at least the new screen would allow for integer overscale, versus the current screen being utterly screwy with stuff like that.
They havent put them in stock yet since making the change
Talking more about the resolution, not the aspect ratio though
1280x960 has less compromises integer scaling than 1240x1080
Im sure this was posted, but for pinning;
Update Regarding RP Classic shipping and Teal, Kiwi and Berry shells. US customers will need to change color if you got these ones.
We should have our RP Classic review unit tomorrow so you can see if its worth keeping that pre-order. We'll host a livestream after it arrives.
Yeah, and now itās better than both.
Besides, I like the aspect ratio more, and I already slap on sharp-shimmerless to anything that isnāt non-integer, so I donāt care about integer scaling unless it can be overscaled without losing too much of the screen.
We already posted it a while ago. But I donāt think we pinned it, so thatās actually helpful.
Oh tomorrow??
Hell yea
the new mini looks way more enticing now. why did they go with the stupid old screen in the first place?
because the god of 4:3 aspect ratio would not have been pleased
Because ā4:3 and 1280x960 are outright required for it to be goodā, even when we know it outright isnāt even 1280x960.
assuming you don't use 4:3 aspect ratio for the home consoles
You shouldnāt be using them like that in the first place unless you deliberately only care about 4:3.
At this point thereās outright been enough proof of devs not actually accounting for either option alone and literally everyone (except for a select few) just half-assed their adjustments, resulting in some sprites for the same games being made for 8:7 and some being made for 4:3.
