I've always found it weird how Saturn in particular has this situation where you've got two different emulators

Yaba Sanshiro is much less demanding but a lot less accurate

And Beetle is much more accurate, but harder to emulate than Dreamcast lol

I know it's because the Saturn has really weird hardware

I mean it's similar to profiles of n64. Many low end devices use a really inaccurate profile/core/whatever. Makes games playable but man do those textures look bad/wig out

So the yaba vs beetle thing is a high level emulation vs low level emulation thing - beetle isn’t harder to run because it’s unoptimized, it’s harder to run because it’s more accurate.

On lower end systems like snes/nes we’ve mostly just abandoned the easy to run but less accurate emulators we were using in 2005

Saturn is a bitch cuz it was designed to be a 2D powerhouse but had 3D shoehorned in late in development

Right now on ps2/gc and up we only have the less accurate jit/dynarec style emulation because actually emulating the ps2/gc hardware would be monstrously expensive computationally at the moment

Somebody probably could make a cycle accurate ps2 emulator in current year but who is going to take the time to develop an emulator that for now would only work on top end CPUs (if even - to truly emulate the ps2 gpu you have to recreate it on your cpu and use software rendering just like how beetle psx is most accurate via software rendering - given how demanding software emulation of voodoo cards from the late 90s can be via PCem etc I’m not certain even a high end desktop chip is really ready for emulating sixth gen console GPUs)

I can't think of one company that has not sold at least one product that was half baked or messed up in some way, and tried to get away with it.

Unfortunatly, it's just the world we live in now. To some degree or another we are guinea pigs for all tech companies. Getting their money comes first now, before creating a product that will last a "lifetime"

Bug fix updates, electronics that bend where they shouldn't, screens that delaminate, batteries that die prematurely, buttons that break, improper thermal regulation etc. etc. etc. Things that should have been fixed or caught before release, but weren't, or were left that way on purpose, in hopes that no one noticed.

Shit happens, but I don't think writing off an entire company makes sense. Everyone gets to do what they feel is right though.

Hell, the company I work for has knowingly sent paychecks to me that were obviously not correct, but I didn't quit. I just brought it to their attention and we moved on. Although they obviously hoped I wouldn't notice; I did, and I got paid correctly.

These devices aren’t really specced around design, they’re designed around what’s cheap and available.

It’s why you get the ARC S/D that look like a Saturn controller and can’t reliably run Saturn games. Or this with no thumbsticks. Or the TSP that’s just a Frankenstein’s monster of PSP/Vita parts but can’t play those games.

I love retro handhelds, but it’s all a little goofy with a little thought.

I mean the aesthetics and control design still have their uses despite the systems they borrow from. Like the PSP layout is something a lot of people find comfortable and familiar, so it makes sense to borrow from it on a handheld. There are some devices that are definitely in a scam tier with trying to clone form factor but I don't feel someone like Anbernic, TrimUI, or Retroid are necessarily doing that. The borrowed aesthetics seem more like a mix of tapping into nostalgia and using things they know are popular in terms of control/device design

With the 6 button layout in particular there's not as many consoles to borrow aesthetics from in terms of nostalgia, so it does also make sense there that the Saturn look keeps coming back up even on devices that can't handle it flawlessly. The 6 button layout also has plenty of use outside of Saturn such as 6 button Genesis/arcade games or using the top row for turbo buttons for 3 button games. Also a lot of mappable buttons for ports

That’s what I mean though: they’re designing around nostalgia and availability. My issue is when form and function don’t meet up somewhere. It’s just a pet peeve of mine.

I’m not accusing the big players of being untoward, merely stating that something like the TSP having useless sticks just to present a facsimile of a specific system is silly to me.

I’d just rather see sensible design.

The sticks on the smart pro aren't useless though, it can play more psp games than it can't, and they're also nice for portmaster

People only test the super demanding games like GoW and immediately write off the rest of the library

I haven’t been following with classic so I might be getting something wrong. I don’t quite understand the value proposition of RP Classic vs something like RG40XXV. It’s more powerful but the extra power only benefits if it has a stick. I mean the design and OLED screen is cool and maybe justified for the increased price, but if it has a stick it would be much more appealing.
