#Retroid Pocket Classic
1 messages · Page 10 of 1
This would never happen on android
Either it works everywhere
Or it works nowhere
QC also has a booth on the show floor so it could be they just have new chip spec and some devices on display.
4h 30mins till opening
So what’s this chip do
i have never heard of that chip 😄
Yeah
Can support 120hz
Yeah, but keep in mind it still doesn’t support Video out and the screen is only 60hz.
This is at least good news in regard to their later stuff, since it means they now have a cheap Snapdragon chip they can default to for later budget handhelds.
We could literally see a return of stuff like the RP2S and other budget options from Retroid that are in the $80-$120 range.
Im already speculating that Qualcomm is gonna push Retroid and AYN to use their G series chips
kek probably because no one used the G1 Gen1 afaik
plz buy are ancient rebadges
ew reddit
Was the g1 gen1 in anything? Supposedly this is 80% higher and 25% higher in CPU/GPU respectively
I mean could be a solid chip for sure
Just a massive unknown tho
It's Qualcomm, so it's not likely to be trash at least
Wonder how different each one of these G-Chips are. Wonder if unlocking Linux on one might make it easier on the others
Gpu seems pretty low but cpu is good. But there aren't any real specs so nobody knows
It's made for streaming
afaik they had an internal dev device and no one bought the chip
Does RetroArch support adreno gpu drivers?
Because no one used it
Any rough estimates what it's comparable too ? Like at least G99 levels or better
I whish the would work with qualcomm to reduce the Input latency even more for these new devices(if it's possible) . That's one the major problems keeping me away from high end Android devices
Man that chip really makes the lack of stick that much worse
Not really, cause the only real system with sticks that benefit from it are N64 and DC, cause lets be frank, GC and PS2 are a pipedream
Dont worry in 3 months they wiil announce a Classic plus with stick for only 50 more
Which, still a stick for those is 100% understandable
Qualcomm mentioning retroid in their official promo material is kinda cool
I wonder if AYN is in talks about getting these chips as well?
QC really wants to sell their gaming chips after 2 previous generations of no one caring enought ot buy them
I mean
Retroid needs to get this out to reviewers hands ASAP to mitigate the PR disaster on the Mini
Its a net positive for better driver and community support if they sell more devices with these chips
.... yeaah imma wait for 3rd party options
Hey Qualcomm, what games does this handheld without sticks play? How does it play them? Can you repeat that for the court?
Something from waterfield would prob fit really clean lol
Oh absolutely, and as long as they don’t make the same mistakes with the G3X Gen 2 (by potentially sending dev units to turnip driver devs and/or high-end Android game devs, to make sure they can optimize for the chips), they’ll already have done a much better job ensuring that a non-standard chip will be properly supported.
Soul Calibur homie. What else do you gotta say
Yeah, a stick for N64, DC, and PSx would be ideal, they put them on anbernic’s lol
The very legitimate game that's definitely legally available on Android
No shit, and make sure to send it to devs even earlier.
We know Reviewers are unironically way too busy with other handhelds to be able to comfortably check them all for issues (without being rushed by the fact that they need to put the video up well before pre-orders ship out), so let the guys who are gonna be tinkering in-and-out with the device find the issues first.
The analogue pocket cases are probably pretty much exactly the right size for this
So this g1 gen 2...we know nothing about clockspeeds
I'd say it's about t820 level in performance
Id buy it
Really hoping sticks would only be like $20 more tho 😆
Unless they throw in a 865
Unlikely now
Mini squared seems like a good way to go if you want sticks
Maybe g2 gen1
They did say it would be 80% faster CPU and 25% faster GPU.
While they didn’t exactly specify those are in comparison to the G1 Gen 1, that is exactly what they were comparing the G2 Gen 2 and G3 Gen 3 to (their immediate predecessors), so it’s unironically safe to say that the 80% and 25% are in comparison to the G1 Gen 1.
You have no idea. So tempting. Just wish it was a vertical. Not sure how pocketable the mini is. Bigger than the cube and cube was a barely
This is why people are complaining about retroid in this place look at them they are in western market more
All the literature they're handing out there is in comparison to g1 gen1 (2023)
@eager rain Meaning this is gonna be way better at Saturn than what we initially expected.
Which was used on.... Nothing?
i guess not compatible with the 6 button classic
🤣
Damn
It's shame to not do video out but I understand this chip is very new
It is funny to reference something no one has ever used tho
Could have lied even more
Yup, I just wanted to be safe since most of the articles I was looking at before seeing Qualcomm’s official announcement didn’t specifically compare it to the Gen 1.
246274x stronger then the G1 Gen1. Will literally kill your grandmother with performance
Ah. Makes sense
I can’t really do much with these estimates but hopefully we real benchmarks and gameplay tests very soon
Yeah, since no one really even used the G1 Gen 1, we don’t have estimates for that higher increase beyond roughly comparing the G1 Gen 1 to an overclocked 4 Gen 2 like what we were doing before.
IT IS 45% better, WITH 18x performance AND a .8 improvement PLUS deadly nerotoxin!
Pretty simple
This is looking promising for Beetle Saturn.
I just want to play Shining the Holy Ark on this gorgeous OLED ohhh please lawd
I guess? Who knows what this thing does. Blends?
why won't they say what the cores actually are lol
Turnip devs or mesa devs?
GPU is kinda week. But I know that doesn't always matter
I wouldn't be surprised if Russ or ETA already have one and we're waiting for the embargo to end
Don't also know the clocks or anything
Yeah reviewers are gonna have a blast to play around with new chips that are tailored to their needs (Android gaming and emulation)
I’ll look forward to it
Either one really, we’re gonna need someone to figure out good drivers for compatibility with stuff like Dolphin/Cemu/Yuzu/RPCS3/etc, and Android games usually don’t let you use custom drivers, so QualComm will also need to figure out helping those game’s devs support the chipsets.
Yeah. Firmly ok skipping preorder tho. Will wait for reviews and early adopters to sus it out
ETA is always first with everything somehow.
Like the raspberry pi 5, nvidias latest low profile graphics card and even every single APU from AMD
Why, Genshin Impact, naturally.
lmao G1 Gen2 80% preformance increase against what a chip that never existed aside from QC labs
Basically yeah. We need benches next to a known chip like s4g2 or sd865
ETA gets a lot of hate but I actually don't mind his stuff and look at it more of a product showcase than review , he does got a lot of stuff early
or QC could just list their core speeds like any normal company
I agree. He does tend to rush a lot of his videos out. So sometimes mistakes are made. But he does have some great first look vids.
Pretty sure he doxxed himself twice
Oh really 😅
He really pumps them videos out too fast
Yeah one of them was a “ali express best handhelds” video where the description was filled with affiliate links
Too fast
Stubbs is typing...
If you are sleeping you caught lacking 🤣
ETA is a machine, I wish I could make videos that fast, still takes me days 😆
I don't know how he does it tho
I once heard eta on the rh podcast and he was talking how he still works full time and uses the money from his channel to pay for his children’s college funds
He's a good guy
Stubbs and ban may correct me if I misremember
He clearly doesnt sleep
He works for Launchbox as well
Wow and he still got time to make videos
and I don't think he sleeps yeah haha
Wait what
somehow has that gene
For sure people just hold him to a standard that doesn’t make sense.
He’s not an in depth reviewer but someone who does lots of showcases
I can't lie I stopped holding him like two years ago and just enjoy his videos as device showcasers
Yes I’m always right
That's super crazy
There’s a hidden meaning behind that picture
Maybe 2 hidden meanings..
2 big hidden meanings.
I will not forget my pot holders
Fast to make videos when all you do is read spec sheets and show a few games, I prefer more in depth reviews than ads
That's actually impressive
I always thought it was Luigi Got Big Tiddies
Do either of them have a similar meaning to Flander’s ski suit?
I prefer Mr Sujanos videos the most.
I feel like nowadays I can predict like 95% of how the review will go
One disadvantage of watching retro handheld reviews for the past 4 years
And you’re right, I was lying to stubbs
Not it’s Luigi’s big tiddies
An odd fixation. But we are an odd group
Retail pics today??
Would be surprised if Retroid wasn't slamming their social media today with pics
Now that all details are out, and to wash out bad press a little. Would be smart
Yeah if they’re selling it later
Qualcomm being vague again like with the g3x gen 2
He gets 4 hours of sleep
Think the g3 gen 3 will be an 8 gen 3 in disguise
But then again the gpu is adreno a32
Here you go Stubbs
The real question is how much faster is this G1g2 than the H700
It's got to be a decent bit if it's running android
It's gotta run Saturn solid. imagine having a separate sku just for Saturn and then it running like ass
don't let rob see this
also, stoked on this new CPU, but i'd wait for reviews before ordering as its a complete unknown in real world performance
Yup
Like you already dont have one in hand
👀
Next week-ish maybe?
No review units have been mailed out yet, but if history serves...yeah should be by end of this month
will qualcomm showcase their processor benchmarks using secret console emulation?
I still kinda want this
We should be getting the 6 button variant as well to show
and I requested the pokemon one for the regular 😂
Fun colors, I am a simple person
would like you to tell us if the 6 button is weird for normal 4 face button operation
Be good to see side by side with dmg. Love my dmg. But do wish for it to be a bit smaller
Feel free to @ me once you get shipping confirmation for your review units
Got a DMG again just for this video
We’re starving for info
I won't be holding back, no worries there 😄
someone won the lotto.....
Have you got a brick? Be good to see real world size in hand/pocket
5k mah battery 🥵
Also goes without saying, but I won't be holding back on Retroid. After the RP Mini debacle, everything will be looked at and considered. Depending on timing if i'm first up, we'll be doing a livestream and calling on your help as we dive into every nook and cranny.
1080p spider-man dreamcast RAHHHHHHHHHH
Scaling, shaders, all that
also see if they send a cake/pie with it
I do!
@oak blade
Very close! Mounting debt is similar, right? 😂
Got the microscope ready I hope
Stubbs will have to wear pants for that
Doubling the amount of taste tests from now on?
Just be extra thorough
Seeing if I can get a lens that will work for this with my equipment
The berry one looks appealing
Now that you mention it..
I bet the purple one tastes like battery acid
I made a rule 2 years back on buy electronics, always buy after 6-9 months when all the software kinks & hardware defects are ironed out. So review hardly matter on launch days. They are good info but not get my money
The adreno 750 in the 8 gen 3 is the same architecture as the a740 in the 8 gen 2, same core count as well but clocked higher
so the g3x gen 3 does look exactly the same as a 8 gen 3 with clock speed being the unknown
The rule that could have saved people from the rp mini
It save me from Asus ROG Ally issues
Should’ve saved money and bought the 406v on sale after it got gammaOS instead of buying it on launch
Didn’t quite appreciate how much of my enjoyment of the 405v was gamma derived
i gave up on the 406v yesterday after having it in my cart at a very good price
there's really no point to me buying it
Would it be crazy to wish for a cheaper 406V without sticks? Or a recessed single stick?
I used to think the RGB30 stickless mods were a little wacky, but after using the Aya classic, stickless really does have offer a more focused and pocketable experience
A skinny 406v would be banging
I thinks Saturn performance can be key for 6 buttons on Retroid Classic , thats the only one I fancy for
Can't wait
Otherwise we have n-Th number of devices with XY AB only layout
this does feel a bit fast after rp5
new for Retroid 5 devices in 7-8 months
what 6 button saturn games are you guys playing
I hope we get a 40xxV followup with whatever their next budget chip is and the 406 screen
as long as their next budget chip has vulkan for slang shaders that's my perfect gameboy right there
40xxsp
So Qualcomm is pushing for new chips in the handheld space? Very neat
or 3.92xxsp
anbernic please make a 4 inch dmg without sticks already
whats missing for you in this classic?
i'm talking about a budget model
the anbernic logo, it doesn't integer scale GBC like the 406 screen does, and my preferred gameboy shaders would be a huge burn in risk on oled
also i don't want retroid controls on a vertical in general
im still hit or miss on the retroid dpad for fighting games....
i just don't like to be reminded i'm using a ps vita dpad all the time
Where da pics at
pinned
Actually underrated handheld
Retail pics
looks and feels cheap irl imo. but still a decent device
That's honestly why I am still kinda amped about this! Sure an additional stick is nice and all, but I want a more focused experience that I can slide into my pocket
so the retroid Classic?
I was actually surprised when a friend let me hold his, it’s quite a bit nicer than the pics make it look imo
i mainly have stickless devices as the stuff i'm willing to take around, it irks me to have sticks moving around in bags
i don't think we need the whole 406v without sticks though, just that screen on a slimmer flat dmg body
Yeah the screen having almost no surface for the adhesive to hold it down doesn’t help either
Tbh swap the sticks for sliders and make it thinner
But it looks pretty, except for the stick
it just looked and felt like cheap plastic to me
i'd rather not have anything, sliders can get caught on stuff too
Fair
Im more on the side of no sticks, but adding a sliders for N64 and DC is understandable tho for those who want it
i wouldnt mind the psp knub
I really like the heavily recessed switch stick on my A30 and it doesn’t impact pocket ability
Mini zero 28 has the recessed sticks too and they feel great
They’re the good Retroid sticks too
shut your dirty mouth. We don't talk like this in this channel s/
Sliders bro. Sliders everywhere. Let's just normalize it
Would make the world a better place
Sliders can be fun if done right
they were done mostly right for rp flip and then were never seen again 😔
Just makes sense if your goal is to make something small enough to slide into a pocket
I enjoy sliders, I think companies just want to make generalist devices that take no risks so they get avoided because some people abhor sliders
You know. I'm sure they're out there but I've ran into less resistance than I thought I would
Especially because those same people tend to hate switch sticks as well
And at that point I'm like, just grab a controller
I do wonder if the classic is almost a workaround when they realized the Mini wasn’t going to keep going with the screen. If they bought the screens you gotta use them in something.
for me something with sticks or sliders isn't going into my pocket, it's more the opposite
if i'm gonna be playing ps2 and over i want decent ergo and taller sticks
They have to release the retail pics soon right… right? It’s going on pre order in 8 hours
insert temu meme
We really need a device with hall sliders to come to market again eventually
you gotta consider how awkward sticks on verticals already are, and how much more awkward verticals with sliders would be
Sticks on verticals being awkward is subjective and depends on the layout, same could be said for sliders; it can be done correctly though
People like to hate on sliders just because they’re different, but that’s exactly why I like them. They feel better for DC and N64 compared to modern analog sticks imo
I want a gamepad with flip 1 sliders for my laptop bag
Imo sliders would be way better on verts then sticks. But to each their own
A slider is basically a button you slide around. You already do that with any mobile touch screen game. Sticks are heavily dependent on location. As your thumb actually has to travel around the stick for certain directions. I've honestly never found sticks comfortable on anything that doesn't have ergos to palm like a controller
sliders are more dependent on location
you need more leverage to slide a slider than to move a stick
Kinda. I can use a dpad whether it's low or high on a device. Sticks is another story
Sliders are closer to a dpad than a stick
from my experience with the 3ds they take too much force to move to be on the bottom
i don't know if the flip ones are smoother
I mean that's all configurable. it's still the same range of motion
Flip 1 sliders were chefs kiss. And I don't even consider them to be in the best position
Will be interesting to see how sticks are on the flip 2. As long as the center of gravity is near the hinge, they should be solid
I was just impressed that on the flip 1 they even had R3/L3 on the sliders. Those things were very nice
Really just kinda shocks me they haven't put them on anything else. Especially since there wasn't really any hardware complaints about em
I'm sure taking off the shelf sticks is just cheaper tho
Sliders would have been nice on the Ayaneo classic too
But they put it beside pie….
is g1 gen 2 just rebranded 4 gen 2/4s gen 2
peformance should be between G99 and D900?
Naw there was loud complaints lol
Actually 4 gen 3
Okay but on a vertical I think it'd be different
I love sliders, they’ve just got a loud group of haters because they’re different. Do I want sliders on every controller and handheld? No. But are they sick as a choice for different way of playing and pocket-ability imo? Hell yeah 🙌
is 4 gen 3 still 6 A55 + 2 A78 cores or is it different? could not find any info
I don't really know cpu will be better than g99 and 720g
For sure
Gpu will be weak side
I mean, 4 gen 2 is already at G99 level
Yes but they will be better than that
I would assume gen 3 will be better than that at least
I wonder if it is manufactured by TSMC or Samsung
it's probably without the broadband stuff, but with overclocked GPU
Yes
But the good thing is if they could do rp2s with this chip
it sounds overkill for the type of handheld the classic is
True but not really people like to do other things that benefit the emulation
yeah and the price is still quite low
Exactly the technology is always improving
Not a fan of sliders, but they'd be ideal on a device like this where it's them or nothing
i hated the psp knub at first. it wasnt until i put emulation on it that i appreciated it
Look at his subs. He has more reach
I feel like he’s also being as a more valuable partner since he probably has a good conversion rate
view -> affiliate link -> sale
and he’s less critical since he doesn’t do in depth reviews
So manufacturers really like sending him stuff
If it had a slider for the classic 6 it would’ve been perfect for N64
Tone35 might appeal to you
careful, last time I mention ETA Prime when I first came on here. I caught some heat from it.
I watch for the thing other can't get
Eta prime is device showcase and at least it's good thing you can see the device early then later on watch reviewers depth on the device
The only beef I have with ETA is that he uses the word "review" too much. No issue otherwise, great content to check out devices
I mean he is very good at what he does, he makes good videos, but there are some here who don't like him.
Yes deffo my only criticism of that
He use scam people in 2018. But, NO one cares now.
Classic pie anywhere???
Any ideas on what the performance of the G1 Gen 2 chip in this sucker is gonna be like? In my head I'm imagining it being fairly comparable to the T618, where it'll play everything below GameCube and PS2 just fine as well as just a little bit of lightweight GameCube and PS2, but I really don't know.
Probably around between G99 and T820 level, closer to the T820
Majority of GCN/Wii, most PS2 with tweaks
I'd highball it to D1100 level
Complaints about sliders sure. But not complaints about them not working I think?
And I def don't want sliders on everything. Just when going for pocketability I think they make a lot of sense
oh damn this has a 5000 battery, if the soc is efficient as people been saying this is probably going to be a battery king?
Also oled and also 27w charging
Pretty cool for battery people
Esp if playing lower end
Yes closer to t820
But since it's snapdragon it should have better performance
But the gpu will be bit weak
Love, how everyone knows everything about this brand new SOC. Should ask yall for lotto numbers
Think this will be worth an upgrade from a Brick?
Yeah because g1 gen1 is basically 720g
Yes but wait for reviews before any rash decisions
but fomo.......
I'm very interested, but I definitely think waiting for reviews is the smart call.
But do I have the willpower to be smart today?
Do reviewers have theirs in hand yet, or still waiting to even receive them?
I don't believe anyone has been hands on with the Classic or Flip 2 outside of Retroid.
There’s not even been any pics of the actual device yet like they did with the flip2
Vaporware
Exactly. Yet here I am...
I'll probably wait, but the urge is there.
I dunno. I eat like 1 less cheeseburger and it negates the discount. Haha. I'll be waiting
Respect, its tempting for sure
Haha, very fair!
I guess Ill see how much it comes out to with shipping if it turns me off enough
Yeah, staring at the total after shipping has helped me not make bad decisions in the past.
Plus dunno what the tarrif situation is this week
Right. I think if it came through customs today it would be fine. But by late April when this might ship? Who knows?
Absolutely no way to predict at this point.
Adding another $100+ in tariffs would definitely hurt the price calculation.
Wonder how much the bigger size sacrifices portability
Depends on your jean pocket size. Hehe
Mine will fit both. I just might not throw my wallet in there too
True, not all of us live in Hawaii and get to rock shorts year round
I kinda wish there was a littttle more chin
That's what GKD Pixel is for
Are there google services on it?
Banana hammock friendly
All recent Retroid devices have had Google services, I'd be shocked if this didn't.
Might go through with it and sell my brick and mini28 to go towards it
bigger display wins by default. less than 3.5" got me squinting
Is the handheld spreadsheet wrong, it says its a touchscreen
Damnit i should've bought a classic
If it's touchscreen I'm selling
It is a touchscreen
Am I misreading this comment? Makes it sound like theres no touchscreen
Had 137 upvotes
Which is a touchscreen
First reply to the top comment
Im saying lol
that explains it
I take anything reddit says with a grain of salt
As the SBC reddit is a echo chamber of bad takes
That's just reddit
True lol
It's touchscreen????
Damnit i shouldn't have bought a brick
Something better is always right round the corner
You want 2? I'll sell you mine 😆
It's the same screen as dmg, lg wing yes
Yeah, this is the same screen as the RP Mini, LG Wing, and Ayaneo DMG
It's always good to check out of hype cycles if you're satisfied with a device
Honestly it's one of those hobbies where riding a year behind is probably the smartest move
I'm not really
I hate linux
No touchscreen isn't really that bad
Tbh I think an ideal device for me would be something GBC sized with the ability to play pico8. No sticks. No weird shoulder button shapes. Give me close to that smooth back panel Nintendo gave me. And (nearly) square screen
Allows the CFW and bugs to get paved out
But it's be better if it did
And any manu shenanigans
These gaming chips they poop out don't seem to get alot of support
No touchscreen android sucks
Idk about the Linux offerings on the Brick but any typical emulation station setup is pretty nice for older emulation
It would be bad
Cause not many have used them
It's chicken egg scenario
For me Linux starts to get more annoying once you get into systems beyond Retroarch
I find Linux a lot easier if I can get to the terminal with a BT keyboard. Lol
Yeah and that with software made with no touchscreen in mind
And I chose the worst handheld for portmaster
The xx spam is conducive to developme r
Well additional annoyance on rocknix for single card devices because of it not making an exfat partition for Roms.
Two a133p devices arent
Dang that sucks.
The 35XX SP has paid dividends with how great MuOS has been for me
Then the 120hz screen discovery? Magic
...not that many Portmaster games can even do >60fps
I mean it's still good for BFI, but yeah
Battle For Ikinibottom
Vice city through portmaster on the brick runs pretty well
The controls🙈
I'm just waiting for that stick grip
Its really not that bad, I got through a handful of missions without it
I've tried that. Unfortunately it gives me eyestrain. It is pretty cool though
BFI on 35xx sp for real?
Iirc from a RGC video, that is true
yeah gamma sniffed out the 35xx is a 120hz panel
#1128080130242261094 message
34xx as well
and as mentioned before its really only good for RA Black frame insertion so every second frame is just pure black so really its just 60fps but with better motion clarity
Which color are y'all going for?
6 button
Might go with the retro
i also want the retro......
Why not both?
Between 6 button and Teal for me
6 button only benefits saturn games? Any other uses?
I'm gonna go with whatever shows up on marketplace from their fixed second batch
will you be playing a lot of cps?
Yep
or retroid will tell its fixed.
We didn't know! It was the manufacturer!
Anyways. I like the berry color.
Want black bezel. So probs purple
Black bezel is best
Hmm maybe purple yea, it def looks more like a gb color than an og gb
Black bezel will blend into blacks of oled screen
So when games have borders it will look much nicer
did anyone get review units?
my mind says 2 extra buttons on the saturn version means more hotkeys for retroarch shortcuts. my heart says PIKACHU
Extra hotkeys is always nice
m2 button would of been nice
if this chip gets CFW I'll get a kiwi
Will it have some frontend already on it?
retroid came out with great color on this
Figure anything to setup a Pocket Mini will crossover to this due to it using the same screen
Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 Pocket Classic
8-core Kryo (2 Performance, 6 Efficiency cores)
Adreno A12
Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1
Up to FHD+ 120 Hz
VS (whatever the first gen was below)
Snapdragon G1 Gen 1
8-core Kryo
Adreno A11
Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5
Up to 1080p 60 Hz
"The Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 is the last chip in Qualcomm's new Snapdragon G series stack but receives an equally substantial upgrade. The octa-core Kryo CPU features two Performance and six Efficiency cores. The new configuration promises 80% better CPU performance. Meanwhile, the Adreno A12 offers 25% over the last-generation Adreno A11. We can witness this regarding display support, where the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 is suitable for up to FHD+ 120 Hz as opposed to the Snapdragon G1 Gen 1's 1080p 60 Hz."
I like the arm chip market honestly
Mediatek is real competition
Amd is too actually idk what I'm talking about
Intel is too entrenched to lose
The vast majority of people dgaf about snapdragon
Mali GPU is irrelevant, so the battery stuff that mediatek has is real nice for the average person
wifi 5 on a new SOC. why
It's not great but past the initial setup the wifi probably doesn't matter that much on this
to me good wifi is something I need
wifi5 is fine for the handheld. other things like why
That makes sense ig, what other things are they planning on using this for?
The chip or the device
Chip
because its pretty much not an new soc they found something old to make gamery
technically its probably a refresh of an old line
👉Stubbs gives you all the infomation you might need to help you decide while (or if) ordering the new handhelds from Retroid. He discusses his buying plans for the RP Flip 2 & Classic from Retroid, discusses incoming review units, shares thoughts and feelings about all the issues lately, and whether he recommends buying now, later, or ever!
Our...
Cutting it a little close to release phew
All dripped out to explain the mini situation
Yeah that was a speed run edit
Still on the fence, watching it rn. Already smashed that like button
don't do it unless you want to be a potential jank beta tester, basically, wait for reviews etc
but also look at the new shiny toys
-# can our past traumas be healed, will we ever be ok?
I am the "jank beta tester"
I love to tinker and hack though
Although I'm going flip 2 instead of classic
I gotta come over, break your legs and take your classic Flip2 if you want
hope you gotta order the black one
Jank Beta Tester here.
US 16 Bit
weren't you the most vocal against pre-ordering from them again 😂
I think Im going to, I mean if its software related it can be fixed
Also it plays some ps2?
Yea I think im in
its all talk
till it comes time to order
That was before they actually gave me a better solution than what I was expecting (them actually offering those replacement screens for free to mini owners), as well as actually delisting the Mini.
Now, I’m just flat out refusing to buy the Flip 2 because I do not trust that hinge, but I’m willing to test the Classic.
you can checkout anytime you like, but you can never leave guitar solo
If they would list the Mini Cube for pre-orders as well, I would place some but nooooo
Nah, I’ve already made it clear that the reason I went from “only willing to get the classic since I literally cannot see how they can screw that up” to “not even getting the classic” was directly because of the revelation on the Mini’s screen being a lie. With them actually doing what we suggested, I feel at least fine enough again to do that, while also still advising people wait.
120Hz VRR OLED screens can heal all wounds. (Oh, these don't have that? ... then the pain continues.)
Not preordering either of these, but I hope they turn out good.
I may buy the Classic, not for myself but for one of my family members as a gift.
Let us beta testers be exactly that, and wait for us to find any jank before you order.
and once again I have to say
(Plus, I refuse to not use PayPal, so I at least have that as an option if there is somehow a “mini” level issue, one that I’ll be fully willing to pull the trigger on).
Mini Cube being sold for real is an actual possibility if people end up liking the DIY'd Mini's so Ig wait for people to DIY their RPMini's and hope they enjoy them x3
…That’s why you were mad? Not that people were lied to, and then they were willing to fix it so that we’d actually have the proper screen without any fake 4:3 jank, but that means the Mini V2 is likely delayed?
SAME THO
but the lack of integer scaling is also really annoying
im guessing this isnt tempered glass?
seriously how do you not remember that i was actively participating in the discusion the whole time
most screen protectors are tempered aren't they?
WE KNOW WHAT YOU MEANT
nah, some are film
Oh they posted that stuff? Nice, I’ll just check the diy section to see what the Classic buttons are.
Shit if they did glass for the RP5, this is 100% glass
and yeah I'm not sure retroid has re-earned anywhere near enough trust for preorder territory
At $5 for 1 it'd have to be
still half expecting used rp mini returns to go back out as 'new' at some point
I do, I just also remember that you were going nuts about the Mini V2 screen being the perfect bottom screen for Super SP.
technically i wouldn't say i don't trust them
Mr shield will sell you like 3 for $10
Wait, was that you or Bennie?
i just think they're scummy
ah this is why people still hate magicx
i guess im getting ready to buy all this shit lmao
Yes, that’s literally what I’ve been saying.
Buy it, but it'll look nothing like this
I mean I'll trust magic more after they release 3 devices in a row without some drama
wha happun
mini m
itll just be a brown paper bag
Yeah, same here. And it’s the same for Retroid, Classic is just me taking the bet on there being no issues since I flat out can’t guess what issues there could be (beyond something like Gray-Orange).
Yeah, Mini M was the second strike after the XU10, with the Mini M also being after they started working with the community.
I'm assuming retroid are going to charge for those kits no?
Handing out 1000 OLED screens seems expensive
Free
i mean the mini m they just got scammed
For the screen kit? No they actually directly said it would be free.
And the XU10?
supposedly they spent around 1 million to fix the mini issue
Because keep in mind, I do also think it was likely a scam, but I’m just explaining why other people would still distrust them since it happened twice.
we are getting a zu20 though
We're getting an even better 4:3 screen soon
I’m personally just neutral (leaning towards distrust) towards them because they fell for the same scam twice, which is arguably just as bad, but the intent isn’t as bad.
man anbernic is late
I guess maybe it's cheaper than full refunds for entire devices
Because Chris isn’t around while Sean is still working for MagicX?
Edit: Ok yeah, he talked 8 hours ago, he’s fine.
Spectacular excuse
Retroid was shenaniganistic whereas MagicX was much less so
Well then there we go, that’s probably why you still love MagicX, since it’s really just that you like Sean.
I wouldn't say I distrust retroid at all
Tbf the retroid thing was very drawn out
No it's just the shenanigans
Though I also wasn't in the space during the magicx debacle so maybe that went on longer
Me neither
Yeah, it was specifically first the XU10 being advertised as having a 3326s (but was really the regular 3326, it wasn’t even mislabeled like the Mini M), then Sean showed up and wanted to ask for what the community wanted out of handhelds, explaining that MagicX was hoping to take input to do better.
And then the Mini M was released, was legit a pretty decently good handheld, but had some weird issues of it not doing as well as it should, given it “had an rk3562”.
And then the mislabeled 3326 reveal happened.
the mini v2 wasnt gonna come out for awhile anyway
besides waiting for a screen, releasing it now would eat the market for the rp5 and current mini
Is this chat going to move from upcoming devices in like 20 minutes?
Still struggling a bit with this new format
Yeah I guess that really isn't the best look. They're currently 2-1 right now.
probly not till reviewers get one
Pretty much.
Cant decide how comfortable this thing is going to be compared to something like the MM+ which was a bit cramped for my hands. Looks cool though...which is what always get me and my wallet into trouble
So whats the verdict, are we buying in 20 mins?
im waiting for reviews
Im waiting
you can if you want tho, both are pretty known quantities, only QC can surprise us
I remember we had a size comparison picture that showed it was actually pretty big while still being smaller than the rg40xx V, but I can’t find it thanks to the lack of search options in forums.
lemme dig it up
Ah here we go.
I have this one from earlier
Just found it.
The main thing for me will be how cramped those buttons feel. Being so close to the bottom
With me, I’m fine with the RG35XX Plus, and this is basically just gonna be a bit wider than that in terms of actual usage, as well as a little taller.
Is it roughly the same size as a gbc?
Holy cow I thought it would be so much smaller, like 35xx sized. Was not expecting something only a bit smaller than the 40xxv.
is there a slang shader that replicates game boy pocket?
That’s not a DMG
hopefully I don’t have to adapt my gbp grid overlay somehow
found it
I wouldnt consider it pocketable in that case, still highly portable
I had a gbc as a kid and although it technically fit in my pocket, it was a chonker
the select color on the rp classic doesn’t make any sense.
on the 4 buttons variant is fine, but on the 6 buttons looks weird
Idk if these colors are accurate, I grabbed it from reddit
you are correct, somehow i didnt notice i grabbed a modded gbc lol
Theres more size comparisons here in the comments
This comparison does not accurately represent the true size of the RG406V.
It needs to show the cheeks.
Just finished, Im probably more conflicted now
Just tell us what to do
Yea its thick
Don’t get it unless you’re willing to be a beta tester for potential issues.
I wish the DMG didnt cost steam deck money, if it was under $200 it would be such a winner
Basically the same as all these handhelds.
nothing ayaneo does is ever cheap, even when it should be
In fact, stop pre-ordering handhelds.
Worst case scenario can do a paypal dispute/chargeback
Theyre obviously getting hate right now for the mini issue, but Id guess its more of an outlier
Just verified with retroid. It has a touch screen. Thank goodness 😅
…Yeah, that’s why I’m buying with PayPal.
Retroid accepts PayPal?
this is how upcoming devices have always been
Yeah. It’s how I ordered the RP5.
its always been a forum
Nice. Makes it easier
just dont let them weasle their way out of paypals return window next time
Yup
It is done
4x was $15, dhl $35
Not sure why they are selling the dock as an option with it. Upside-down charging🤣
I am intrigued by this. The oled screen at this price plus an unknown chip to stretch .Not too much money at the end of the day
So who got what?
Classic 6
I added a fukn kiwi to my cart and checked out and my order says classic 6😭😭😭
Retro 4 button 6
Good luck to all but still waiting for reviews and hopefully a v1.5 Mini with full use of the screen
EVERYONE GOT THE RETRO 6

You gotta wait until the other pictures load in the store page for it to work properly.
You should
Now? I’d just recommend asking them to replace the order with the one you wanted.
theres still time to cancel......
What?
i was not prepared for the n word
Again, you gotta wait for the pictures to finish loading on the Classic’s store page.
Wait, I had it muted, they said what?
why is the mini code not working!!!
Patience is key 🤣 lmfao. You won't lose anything with patience
I know that, I was saying that as an expression of surprise.
you didnt add the emoji
I had a Welsh history documentary playing in the background. Suddenly I was wondering where a guy named Rhodri Mawr learned that word during the dark ages
Anyways, here you go. Those images under the big one is what you need to look for.
more like 2 days lol
I refuse to use emoji’s.
Before anyone asks, this is just an example, since I honestly still haven’t decided what I want.
this gif would look great on the classic's oled
I thought I was clear cut going for either Classic6 for function, or Retro for a PSX theme with custom buttons.
Then my eye kept going back to the Atomic Purple, since the Atomic Purple is the first GBC I ever got and modded.
If I was ordering it definitely would be purple classic and transparent blue or whatever flip 2
Transparent purple. If there's a solid option.
You know what? Fuck it, I’ll do Atomic Purple.
I can just use black PSX buttons for it if I decide I still want to do that.
Wait...in theory this thing would be able to play some android games... by which I mean it could play the only game I play on android Stardew Valley. This thing suddenly is looking far more interesting to me. Might get one and a big sd card and load it down with games, movies, music, and ebooks for a little take everywhere device. Been trying to use my phone less and this may work for that.
I'm disappointed the classic 6 layout only came in one colorway
6 layout in Kiwi and they would have my money
I ended up getting both 😅
Yeah, I mean I get why they limited it to the Saturn colorway as it probably wont be a big seller and would complicate the production process alot. But on the other hand I really want a blue one with six buttons
Will figure which I like better later
Is the only use for the 6 button playing saturn games?
I forget but couldn't they be reassigned to hot keys at least in retroarch?
Additional action buttons and also could improve genesis gameplay
You could play N64 as well, you will be limited to using the dpad as a joystick of course but should be playable. Lots of Genesis titles also made use of the six button controller released later for different functions.
I really want the classic 6, just need to see if that 4gb option makes its way to any reviewers, but i have a feeling they will mostly get the best model
They don't even know what their production process is 🤣
Seems like they dont even know what their screens are...though I am not an expert on the subject and still think the mini debacle may be a bit overblown as someone who doesnt use shaders, or own a mini
I'd agree. Mostly. Except they are finally, after a few failed attempts at minimal effort, doing the right thing. And only because they have a new product coming out they need to sell.
I mean, I was gonna just grab a 512gb, use half on games and the other half on music
Making it a EDC device
Retroid response has been less than spectacular for sure. Honestly I dont think I would have cared much about the screen issues on its own. But I dont like the way they have handled the CS this time around.
Couldn't agree more. I believe that's 90% of the customer base right there.
Then again. Isn't stopping people from throwing hundreds at them again. Lol
I hate how retroid doesn't even show you the real thing until after you've paid. Haha
Like...I don't know what it really looks like. Or what it can do but...shut up and take my money.
Its really starting to grow on me as an option. And with my iphone 12 mini starting to have issues a $130 shipped device is a MUCH cheaper option than a new iphone
I have just enough self control to (typically) avoid buying devices immediately after launch, but I am a sucker for the discords marketplace and buying devices from people with buyers remorse a month or two after launch.
Im guineapigging san andreas day one. Taking one for the team
This is why I wait until reviews and dev units are out (and after a few months)
Oh. I love this marketplace. I don't pay shipping or taxes. I let fomo suckers do that
Especially with retroid, who hasn't had a successful launch in years 🤣
Og god, I appreciate your sacrifice
I guess in theory, between it being touchscreen, and mapping some stuff to hotkeys it should be doable
So help me god if they release a pocket classic 2 with a joystick in like 3 months
Oh, there we go. We just found out how they can screw up the Classic.
…Eh, I don’t care about having a stick, I’ll be fine with it as is.
Gimme flat bois
If I’m being honest, I’m not the biggest fan of how the aya dmg looks. I actually think this classic looks nicer
I only wanted it for the oled screen
To each their own. I suppose maybe it "looks" better without a stick, but the amount of additional options you open by adding the stick makes it worthwhile imo
Oh definitely. I’m just talking aesthetics here
I have to agree handhelds without the sticks do look a lot better (from a pure aesthetics standpoint). The brick is a really good example of that.
Definitely more pocket friendly with no sticks
Not that I see anyone throwing that expensive thing in a pocket lol
No doubt
I’m also talking about the block cut-out looking thing at the bottom left of the dmg. Don’t like it
Also the colorways aren’t so great
Black didn't come out so great
I think it does a great job capturing the nostalgia of the og
they knew what they were doing when they locked that behind the most expensive model
is retro color only limited to pre-order?
For sure, odd that retroid didnt do similar for the 6 button
Like they couldve gotten away with it
I would’ve bought it
lol they could have done it with some of the colorways too
Actually it would’ve solved my dilemma lmao
So I wouldn’t have to buy 6 button and retro separately
Lol wait did you buy both?
dang they are starting to sell out allrdy
So by accident lol
Iirc I think the D1100s aren’t available until April??
nah just the 6 button
so are people thinking the 6 RAM is a nobrainer?
the 4GB are the ones sold out
Gotta go with the wacky colors
Basically
its double the internal memory as well for peanuts
i see it as 128gb internal
Anyone preorder?
Yea its like 8% more, no brainer
i want to get the classic before anyone around me does, so i can shove it in their stupid faces
It like wall st speculation
Waiting for a positive review from russ
buy now, think later
(just cancel the preorder if it sucks)
i only hope the tubers get a video out before the last day of cancellation
if theres no videos, im gonna cancel
Yea wonder when theyre going to get theirs
Stubbs mentioned in his recent vid he picked his review unit color, probably won't be much longer
But would the manufacturer just make a few for reviews, then run a separate production run so close?
well best way to tell is when did the rp5 reviews come out
but also mid april isnt far away they could already be in production
his impression video was nov 3rd, and they started shipping nov 14th
preorder was sept 9th
so like a month and two weeks
called it 😎
so like a week or two before launch
RP5 was slow because they only make devices according to order and they did the RPMinis first, and then had issues with the android 13 version that the vocal minority begged for so they had to delay the RP5 a bit longer
well I just got home and was gonna order one, but I can't decide 4 or 6 button
i'd go with 4, just cause i mostly play 4 stuff
yeah I do want a portable saturn but leaning towards 4 button
like i'd play way more NES,SNES,GB,GBC,GBA,PS1 than Saturn
if you can handle the mindgame and not notice it, 6 would be fine tho
wait you're not ordering one are you
i'd just struggle
probably not, kind of waiting for them to maybe sell out and then go, aw shucks
Just go 4 button unless you want a saturn focused device my guess

I def wouldn't pre-order a saturn one, but that's just me. I know it'll play those other systems fine, but the fact that it might struggle to play saturn, just means the buttons might be taunting you
all the colors of the 64 are sold out
of course you can always cancel after some reviews
just retro and 6 button left
thats wild not just paying the extra 10 bucks, but to each their own
maybe they made less of the 4gb?
I kind of think so too, but also a lot of people just want to play like gb and snes
it really doesnt make sense to not just spend the 10 more
im not seeing any of them sold out?
fair enough, just seems like overkill to go for such a pricy device for those systems
but to each their own
do they not show unavailable for you?
theyre all ADD TO CART
good cause I still can't decide
did you order da 6?
they must have added more stock
cause they were sold out
i keep forgetting this is an android device
but aren't now
I haven't, it bothers me that I want it so much
its not aya dmg moneys lol
is there a good chance linux will end up on these?
Oh yea like within the last few minutes
well, if you're buying two you're getting there
yeah, load up ES-DE and then switch it to launch as home screen after config
you'll never even know it's android if you do it right
have retroarch close content with CLI
ITS ON SALE?!
Still no pics of the real device!?
whats droix
aww for a minute I thought the screen was fine
Just weird they did with the flip
gad damnit....
gotta wait a bit tho
hehe, i just bought a DMG too, another reason i'm probably holding off
i like the little things, like wheel for volume, lots of mod/hotkey buttons
gad damnit...
STEREO SOUND
dmg the goat screw the haters
DMG feels real nice in hand
people seem to like it in the DMG channel
dudes playing switch games on external monitor, heh
Yea I will say the one nice thing that came from buying a pocket dmg is that it's been easy to say no to other things I've wanted like a gkd bubble , 34XX, and now hopefull this 🤞
haha, i'm sure i'll sell it at some point, maybe for the Classic 2 if it has a stick, that would have swung me away
welp. if the tubers say either the flip2 or classic sucks, im cancelling and maybe get the dmg.....
and here i thought i was done with ayaneo...
yeah, i think dmg will be in ayaneos lineup for a while, seems popular
get the dmg, live your best life
classic is for lowly peasants like myself
the black colorway is fine/ its the base white one i find not appealing
the finger prints are so bad tho I have to keep a cloth nearby for it
and i do prefer aayaneo's dpads...
That's my goal honestly. Main thing pulling me back is the pokemon colorway on the classic, but maybe i can dye the DMG...
honestly if dmg was just a bit less I'd order it, I can't justify $600 cad
or I guess $550 on droix
yeah, even at that price it's still pricey
dont tell me the cad
Agreed, dmg is just so much
i have no use for such a processor on a 3.92" screen
But it means i'll probably stop following/favoriting every vertical handheld. Might save my wallet in the long run 😆
it really is hard to recommend at it's price point ..... but im a fellow dweeb and a one device to rule all 4:3 had high appeal to me
did it live up to the hype
I love it but something like this will be hard to fix down the road so theres that too
Am I going mad, doesn’t anyone else find it strange we had pics of the flip but still nothing for classic?
Will be nice to cut down, Ill only have this classic, steamdeck, and an a30
i will wait for stubbs to place the classic and dmg side by side
Yeah... that's the big question. Everyone says it's built solid, and so far there's been hardly any hardware complaints, but it's not like there will be enough sold where 3rd parties will be dumping replacement part options
Worst case I'll rebuild it through the power of 3D printing XD
for size comparison?
yeah
arent the screens the same?
the screens yes, but the overall body
@merry mango
yeah, if you want 6, this is the option
now i can play cps3 properly
hopefully saturn too with those performance cores
i have nothing to play on saturn?
I don't want to be controversial, but cps2 library >>>>>>>> cps3
it has to, dont think theyd make that layout and not be able to play it
wow, ok, they're not that different
sega rally and die hard arcade are all you need
only great cps3 game is sf3
cps2 library is stacked
model2 emulator on rp5
using winlator
why play saturn port? get the real deal
for some reason i thought the classic didn't have a border around the screen
but i guess it has the same as the DMG pretty much
sold my odin 2, winlator was way more effort than i was able to tinker with, steamdeck has been perfect
Saturn port actually plays waaaaay better with a controller. like they tuned it to perfection
so saturn is better than arcade unless you have a cabinet or at least a good wheel
sega rally I mean ofc
play ps2 port of sega rally and you'll see what I mean. it looks amazing but it really twitchy and just not as good
Ever wanted to watch me play fighting games with a weird controller? Well, I wanted to jump on the bandwagon and try playing Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike with a STEERING WHEEL. You read right. Let's see if I can survive playing this game against real players online!

tbh dont even play sega rally on saturn that much, the dreamcast version is better
listen, I will respect your opinion but in no way is sega rally 2 better than sega rally
and imo, colin mcrae 2 is a better rally game
see my user name, I am the authority on rally
lol respect
Can I get a rally game with a soundtrack that slaps as hard as Daytona USA?
Daytonaaaaaaaaaaa
was rally2 a model 3 game?
But for real, I just prefer the more modern graphics of
Gravações para o lançamento do jogo no XBOX LIVE e PSN.
Dc
So fantastic
I recently played Sega Rally 2 in an arcade in tokyo, it was legit awesome especially with all the hydraulics
since i found out about the model2 and model3 emulators, ive been playing them. i found model3 games were inferior to model2 games?
So jealous
Ok well yea, that is going to be amazing
i also found VF2 wasnt as fun as i remembered, and VF3 is better than i remembered lol
isnt vf3 model3?
I remember playing an arcade ferrari game like 20 years ago that had 3 monitors, an actual clutch pedal and shifter
yeah, basically the only model 3 game i enjoyed
but rally 2 felt sterile to me. compared to rally 1?
f355 challenge?
thats naomi
YES!
yeah it's just not as good, they really nailed the controls in sega rally 1
Think I played that on DC lol
did you know you can still play it online for dreamcast? they host game nights over at dreamcast-talk
all this sega talk really has me looking at the classic 6 lmao
nah m8 it just feels right lol
Thats pretty cool, for me it was all about that arcade setup, hard to capture that magic on a handheld
For real though, if you like older rally games, give colin mcrae 2 for psx a shot
SEXY
how much are these things going to be
Less arcadey, but not full sim
Having arc flashbacks in a good way
i just want outrun 2006 arcade
yeah which is why I wanted the sd865 lol
why has no one tested lindbergh loader on snapdragon
All black skin please
arcade is arcade perfect lol
fair, though I guess I like the extras
it's great. I had the xbox one back in the day but enjoy the ps2 one since its easier to emulate
the coast 2 coast mode is great as well
haha no I would never run psp on a tiny 4:3 screen 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱
not with that attitude
I squint and play vice city stories on the a30
