They’re not gonna punish us by not selling us handhelds

distant drum
#

That would put pressure on the US to yield.

tranquil elbow
#

dont worry, the US has no allies left

gentle badge
#

Vietnam might get punished for swearing fealty to trump

#

But yeah other than that not sure who they would punish

distant drum
#

Isolationism tends to ostracize potential allies lol

tacit latch
#

ngl I don't know how to feel as a minute 1 preorder after hearing Joey's concern

#

cheap plastic, poor speakers and a whiny fan are all things that would bother me

gentle badge
#

The fan thing has to be at least partially software

#

It runs like mad even in quiet mode

tacit latch
#

and I don't have a lot confidence that these will be resolved in retail units

tranquil elbow
#

that's fair, if you're in doubt you can just cancel and buy it later when more people have it in their hands

wintry oxide
#

There, back on topic

tacit latch
#

Retroid isn't answering Joey so

tranquil elbow
#

I've had the same doubts but we've already talked about this yesterday

#

Joey really loves to overblow things

#

Russ and Stubbs said it felt fine to them so that's good enough for me

#

besides, even with the flaws, I've wanted a powerful clamshell for a long time now and the flip2 is the only option that doesnt cost 1000+ € so I'll just deal with them haha

restive totem
floral pebble
#

Would you rather cancel and potentially see everyone else enjoy the toy you thought wouldn't be good enough? Or hold on to the pre-order and possibly be the first to get a piece of noisy flexy garbage nobody wants to play with?

tacit latch
#

also did I hallucinate it or did at least one reviewer described the speakers as bassy and punchy?

restive totem
#

Dweeb did i think , he liked the speakers

#

Dweeb is light Canadian and Joey is dark Canadian

arctic scaffold
#

if you throw out criticisms about 500 minor/possible issues you can be that one guy that definitely told you so when there's an issue

#

trusted early access reviewer

restive totem
#

Guy pointed out the flaws he found , it's up to the consumers to find it tolerable or not

floral pebble
#

I prefer Joey's crochety guy routine over tech dweeb's nerdisms

restive totem
#

For me , that plastic on the Ice Blue is a no go

floral pebble
#

But it's easy to understand why people might dislike either

restive totem
#

So i thank him for pointing it out

restive totem
tranquil elbow
#

yep thats the only reason why people might find Joey annoying

#

that's exactly why I find him annoying when I see videos of devices I dont have and dont intend to buy

#

I want him to validate my nonexistant purchases

arctic scaffold
#

the main thing i remember is him changing the sticks on the rg556 and going wow what an improvement when it does barely jack shit without gamma stick fix

coral valley
noble canyon
#

Yea his old voice used to be so much worse

#

I don’t mind his voice these past few years

limpid ledge
noble canyon
#

But back then holy shit

restive totem
coral valley
#

If he's putting on a fake voice he's doing a terrific job because he sounds similar in live streams too

tranquil elbow
#

I watch him cause I value the information he provides with the big asterisk of "it's joey, so this end of the world issue is probably nothing, but good to know it exists"

restive totem
hallow pulsar
#

My observation is that Joey says a lot of definitives. “These sticks are the WORST.” “This plastic is the WORST.” ETA hits the same tone but the positives. “This ABSOLUTELY will suit your needs.”

I often lean towards Russ’s opinion simply because it’s less colored than the other two.

limpid ledge
tranquil elbow
#

thats exactly what I was saying yesterday. I watch both ETA prime and Joey with the big asterisk in both directions

tranquil elbow
#

if I wanted to feel validated I'd just watch ETA prime who just loses his mind about everything

arctic scaffold
coral valley
#

The way eta prime says geekbench cracks me up everytime

restive totem
arctic scaffold
#

I'm not a negative review hater btw I only read negative reviews when making my decision

#

I'm just a joey hater

coral valley
#

"I turned this 20 year old phone into an emulation BEAST!!!"

arctic scaffold
#

his takes aren't good

#

he just really wants to find stuff "other lesser reviewers" misses

tranquil elbow
#

didnt he also basically push Russ under the bus about the mini fiasco?

#

or am I misremembering

limpid ledge
restive totem
tranquil elbow
#

ah yes the good old "if you can't do better, you're not allowed to comment on it"

#

the dumbest phrase ever uttered on planet earth

arctic scaffold
limpid ledge
tranquil elbow
#

maybe some of you guys should reconsider your parasocial relationship with the youtubers you watch

#

cause it's kinda cringe

limpid ledge
#

Yh safe

tranquil elbow
#

what does that even mean lmao

coral valley
#

The only parasocial relationship I have is with magicx sean

arctic scaffold
#

I'm not even gonna say it's probably not gonna flex more than other devices, just what joey's takes on it are probably shit

#

like putting it on a table and pressing down to show it flexes? yea because it's a clamshell so it has solid contact with the desktop

#

try it on a regular device and the buttons/analog is going to cushion it

opaque harbor
#

who is joey?

tranquil elbow
#

a reviewer

limpid ledge
#

To be honest tho clamshell when it's flexes like that can bit a worried God forbid you sit on it and breaks you want a clamshell feel solid and hard

tranquil elbow
#

who the hell sits on their handhelds

limpid ledge
opaque harbor
tranquil elbow
#

I keep most of my tech toys on my bed cause it's a double and I live alone

#

never sat on anything

#

and even if I did, I dont have a stainless steel ass and I dont sleep on a piece of wood

#

so it would prolly be okay

opaque harbor
#

you should not sit on a handheld, a tablet, a laptop, or a phone do I really need to point out the obvious? 😅

tranquil elbow
#

no but it is known that you're 200% more likely to sit on a clamshell

#

try to sit on a rp5 with a full front glass panel and tell me how it goes

limpid ledge
opaque harbor
#

don't sit on display including tvs

tranquil elbow
#

are we really saying "the flip2 shouldnt flex because what if my grandma sits on it"

#

are we at this point

opaque harbor
arctic scaffold
#

ok found it

#

#🕹│rh-general message

opaque harbor
#

do not sit on screens

arctic scaffold
#

should say a lot about his common sense/character

opaque harbor
#

do not drop them either

restive totem
#

My theory for why the Retroid chat is cursed and Anbernic isn't it's because they have their stuff ready to ship fast.
We would be posting about the handheld if we had it

opaque harbor
#

accidents happen but you can't expect tech to be indestructible, as long as thing are no less durable then reasonably expected anything else is silly

limpid ledge
tranquil elbow
#

also do you know what hard plastic does

#

it cracks

#

it's a balancing act

opaque harbor
tranquil elbow
#

it's prolly right though, anbernic used to release one handheld every 26 minutes

#

so people had a lot to talk about

opaque harbor
#

and channels like the ktr1 and 199 were crazy

limpid ledge
opaque harbor
#

kind of interesting seeing how ayn has effected the scene

limpid ledge
#

And communication

opaque harbor
#

a shame ayn has not made a clamshell but it is what it is

limpid ledge
sharp narwhal
tranquil elbow
#

would definitely buy a s8g2 clamshell from ayn

coral valley
opaque harbor
#

eh that chip currently feels overkill

coral valley
#

Nah

limpid ledge
opaque harbor
#

emulators that are more powerful are not in a great place yet

tranquil elbow
#

its really good cause it can handle everything you throw at it without having to fiddle with configs

limpid ledge
opaque harbor
#

for arm at least, maybe is somewhat better on x86

tranquil elbow
#

with shaders on top of it and it just works

restive totem
tranquil elbow
#

yeah, that would be an instabuy for me

opaque harbor
#

a shame it will be after tariffs probably 😅

#

people in europe might get it tho

tranquil elbow
#

hey thats me

#

Im in Europe

restive totem
opaque harbor
#

not being able to play the gears of war series on a handheld is unfortunate

limpid ledge
#

I will cry

#

Tears of joy

opaque harbor
#

ah well maybe one day the series will be playable on a handheld

tranquil elbow
#

I never liked Gears of War 🥲

opaque harbor
#

the gameplay would be very well suited to a handheld

#

a cover shooter would be much better for a handheld then a regular fps that might be more high octane

tranquil elbow
#

that's definitely true

limpid ledge
opaque harbor
#

still might play the occasional fps but a cover shooter would be more suited to the form factor

I got confession to make tho

#

I never played halo in my life

#

I know halo I seen people played it

#

Hell the commercial I seen them I was little kid

rapid echo
#

In terms of difficulty, halo 3 campaign is easiest.

#

if you ever wanted to start playing

restive totem

Nah you have to play halo 5 to understand just how bad it got

#

Infinite is pretty fun too even if the story is pretty mediocre

tranquil elbow
#

I remember being very confused by halo when it came out cause people were LOSING THEIR MIND about it

tranquil elbow
#

and I had always been a pc gamer and I was like "uhm it just looks like any other fps"

#

so I tried it

#

and

#

it was just a generic, if well made, fps

#

coming from doom, quake, half life I really didnt see why people were freaking out

#

I guess console people didnt know what a good fps was like

opaque harbor
#

The series was pretty good but bugie had some weird plans for it that probably doomed it to fail after the 3rd game

floral pebble
tranquil elbow
#

well halo had no mouse either haha

#

and hell, halo 1 was a good game

#

but half life it was not

opaque harbor
#

Also comparing quake and half life to halo feels weird

tranquil elbow
#

I gotta say the original modern warfare campaign was really well done

#

but yeah, never was a CoD fan

opaque harbor
#

Halo is clearly different from what came before

tranquil elbow
#

on console, yeah

#

on pc we had a million games like halo

opaque harbor
#

Just in general

tranquil elbow
#

most of them better

floral pebble
#

Command and conquer renegade was the first multi-player fps I played

opaque harbor
#

There was a good reason the halo series became a system seller it redefined the genre for years

tranquil elbow
#

played doom 2 in LAN cause I had 2 pcs in my house

tranquil elbow
#

cause there was nothing else like it

#

on console

opaque harbor
#

Not just on console

tranquil elbow
#

and it didnt redefine anything on pc

opaque harbor
#

Including the games you mentioned on pc

tranquil elbow
#

in fact 2 years after halo we had HL2 which was nothing like halo

#

and that DID redefine the genre

opaque harbor
#

Well yea of course valve would go with something different it's valve

#

They go in different directions

restive totem
#

The og Doom and Halo had a similar impact on the gaming scene in general

tranquil elbow
#

can you give me the titles of 3 big PC FPS that were clearly redefined by halo

#

cause I dont see it

tranquil elbow
#

I just dont see the influence it had on pc gaming

opaque harbor
#

What do you mean 3 big PC fps games most games became multiplatform eventually?

#

Due to how savvy steam was

tranquil elbow
#

tell me 3 titles that came out on pc after 2001 that are clearly inspired by halo

#

since you said it "redefined the genre" and I said "not on pc"

Really only ever played the Halo games in multiplayer at friends houses growing up, oddly I was really surprised to learn the games actually had a proper story in like freshman year of highschool when people were complaining about the story of the new game.
Unsurprisingly given that revelation my favorite games are Minecraft, Stardew Valley, and Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga

Joey on his discord responded to ur comment and said he never said that

#

Or never meant that

#

He prolly meant plastic

#

His hinge is still going good

#

Plastic quality seems mixed by reviewers but we don’t know if it’s QC or preprod issues, I don’t think Joey is overreacting that flex on his device looks terrible

hallow pulsar
#

Oh that makes sense. Yeah it was a passing comment when he was talking about the plastic quality. I think I misunderstood what he was actually saying.

Cause later says he can’t comment on the hinge cause the device is so new haha

They’re hall sticks, they should last longer than the handheld

# opaque harbor But not the rubber 😅

Can you get thumbstick caps. switch thumb caps may fit but won't close the shell completely so you would have to put them on every time you want to use. Unless you get thin caps for the clearance.

I use caps on all my handhelds so it doesn't degrade the thumbstick rubber over time.

Although even cheap systems like the trimui smart pro use daughter boards for dpad and button surfaces so that could have been done I suppose.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. The biggest news is that the hinge is solid. Adin also did 5000+ opening and closing without seeing issues. The hinge was my biggest concern so it’s really great to see two independent reviewers confirming good longevity of the hinge. I expected that dpad centric gaming won’t be the best on flip 2 so I am not disappointed that it’s not super comfortable. I have other handhelds for those systems so I am fine with that.

tacit latch

we are definitely not past flex gate lol

#

that probably will only get resolved once people start getting real production units and comment on them

#

I do wonder if the review units have differences between them, since they are preproduction and all that

blazing burrow
#

Yeah people will need to test for themselves on some of this stuff, we can all show our experience but we need things to actually break and cause true issues in real world

#

I do not think they would have much time to make any hardware changes between these units and what you all will be getting for batch 1

#

The only difference I could see is software changes

#

The hardware is likely the same as batch 1 shipments

#

But nearly every time you see early reviews from any of us, from any brand, they would usually be considered pre-production

Retroid, Anbernic, AYN, etc

I’m mainly wondering since in Russ’s video with the SP, it turned out that the RG35XX buttons with membranes actually were technically even “harder” in a literal sense to press than most other buttons in having more resistance, but due to being membrane vs tactile, they ended up feeling softer to the user.

In which case, if you’re used to something like that, you’re likely gonna actually press harder than you need to for softer membrane buttons.

versed vigil
# gentle badge I think the reality is that the ps2 one is a better controller for fighting game...

Fair enough on the “what they’re specifically cloning” bit since I’ll admit it’s been a while since I used specifically the CD controller, but even SNK themselves have actually done thumbstick revisions that were better, and that nowadays the thumbsticks for a lot of the original controllers are actually a decent bit worn down on top of the floaty.

But, like I said earlier about mods, they actually have made some that make it feel more like SNK’s later thumbsticks, this is one that I’ve seen recommended more commonly than others.

random tulip

The lid design is one of his nitpicks.
One of us, one of us.

sour ore
#

I haven't tried a steamdeck that much, but I don't know how I'd feel about having two inputs side to side

#

having them on a diagonal like most controllers feels more natural to em

rigid thicket
#

It's the most confortable layout side by side.

random tulip
#

Controllers also give you big ass nubs to hold onto

rigid thicket
#

It eliminates the reach to shoulders.

random tulip

Yeah. Whether you dpad or stick shoulders are in same place

#

On my portal I actually shift my left hand down to like grab the corner for dpad. Then have to reach more for L1

rigid thicket

Moving your thumb left/right is easier too rather than rotating your thumb for offset layout.

I don't know... I don't have a steamdeck to compare right now

sour ore

the part with comparisons with the rp5 on controls, it really feels like the sticks being right below look pretty uncomfortable

rigid thicket
#

Clams should definitely default to that layout with maybe a touchpad on the bottom to fill out space if desired.

random tulip

sour ore
#

that's if they have they actually have free space to use, like the centre of the flip 2 already has stuff in it

random tulip
sour ore

i wasn't talking about the buttons

Which I mean was a banger for them. So I can't blame them

sour ore
#

that I honestly don't know

#

oh hey he shows godhand on ps2

rigid thicket

If anything, the internal layout of the Flip 2 is a bit confusing.
The RP5 runs the same hardware in a thinner device with a screen on top of most of the internals.

sour ore
#

what a whacky fun (frustrating) game

rigid thicket
#

There was definitely a better way to lay out the Flip 2 internals.

random tulip
#

Usually your playing with the same central board and just moving components around. Moving that central board somewhere else for more comfortable controls would probably require more work

rigid thicket
#

Aw yeah, Bow and Arrow Boy.

random tulip
#

Honestly I'm happy there's a little more thickness. If anything the thinness of the RP5 meant the ergo grips were kind of pointless

rigid thicket
#

I think the thickness is a net positive myself for comfort, but the Flip 3 better have a Steam Deck layout

random tulip
#

Yeah. Or we burn Retroid down

I don't have to deal with that on my RP5

#

hopefully they can fix the curve or something

distant drum
#

No dice for me. Happy these things are getting out the door though!

Nice to see the cons list consists of items that you have to stretch to come up with.

It makes me wonder what people think of the original hardware like n3dsxl and switch now if they go for reviews like the retro handhelds. I feel we are so spoiled and always nitpicking

#

I am sure most Nintendo hardware will get poor reviews in terms of ergonomics

#

And screen

#

Buttons are pretty loud as well.

sour ore
#

...i have to agree that after spending some time reading people, some seem really, really demanding

strange glen
#

Maybe people need reasons to get the next device doggylol

#

The next is better

sour ore
#

like sure, it happens on any community, pc gaming, home consoles, etc

#

but it seems like there's people expecting build quality of high end phones with performance of four digit computers for a fraction of the price of those

#

I don't know if I am missing something, because seeing these small devices that let you play decades of games and you can take with you feels like an unreachable dream looking back 20 years ago with the gba

#

like sure, some devices won't be as well designed as others, but it seems to go beyond that

...I suppose it's that

#

man, the obsessive arms race towards power really ruins everything, lol

copper burrow
#

I'm largely joking, i just find it all funny 😄

rigid thicket
#

Well, sometimes it's the lack of power difference that causes the extra criticism

#

Like, using well established old chips but completely flopping on the other details.

#

Looking at you Miyoo Flip.

naive hollow
sour ore
#

neither do I

naive hollow

Aluminum+plastic >>>>>> glass

fathom geyser
#

Also people don’t mention in reviews, this is currently p much the only choice you have to play PS2/GC in a clamshell. Literally only mid-tier/powerful oled clamshell on the market

naive hollow
#

That’s the reason I never bought the 5

copper burrow
#

almost as if miyoo was a one trick fluke 😄

rigid thicket
#

Basically, the more similar competition there is the more critical people are.

sour ore
#

right, the rp5 has that glass covering the entire front

naive hollow
#

Yeah that’s a huge no from me

#

If they made a 4s with a 865 in the RP4 body I’d snatch that up

#

Or at least an RP4 like body

strange glen
#

I love the design of RP5, more than RP Flip2 but the premium looking with glass front would makes me nervous playing it.

#

I agree with the conclusion of Russ. Clamshell devices just gets more play time and for busy adults with kids like me, more play time is the top priority

random tulip
#

I don't mind it. but I have to be more than normally careful

#

But that's why I'm buying a classic

#

Gonna throw that thing down stairs

# naive hollow Aluminum+plastic >>>>>> glass

Eh, I wouldn’t like Plastic for a handheld’s lens since it just makes it more prone to scratching on top of also still being fully capable of cracking (since the more resistant to cracking you make plastic, the more prone to scratches it usually becomes, and then the vice versa).

Now, this doesn’t mean I wouldn’t also prefer the glass to only be the lens and not the full front of the device, but I’d still prefer glass.

rigid thicket
#

I think they mean for the body.

#

Like >>>>>RP5 full glass front.

sour ore
#

yes, specially the glass back some phones have now

#

to look fancier

prime bronze
sour ore
#

yep...

rigid thicket
#

For phones I don't even care about how it looks since I always use a case with them, ahaha.

naive hollow
#

I'd prefer glass for the screen cuz that's more resistant to scratches

sour ore
#

it feels completely pointless to me, it's more fragile, doesn't necessarily make it look cooler

prime bronze
#

I know some people go caseless, but I would just be stressed out all the time…

rigid thicket
#

"LIMITED TIME COLOUR!" Yeah, case covers it, don't care. 😅

#

I use a case just because I don't want to also carry a wallet.

random tulip
#

If it was indestructible I like the look. But it's not. So I case. Heh

sour ore
#

jesus

naive hollow
#

beautiful

random tulip
#

Personally I'd be happy going back to plastic everything

prime bronze
#

Oof…total loss at that point

isn't just more expensive, it's also more dangerous when you try to pick it up after falling

let's all go back to wood grain

naive hollow

it was practically indestructible

dropped my pixel 5 on concrete all the time without a case and it lived for years

i think pixel 5 could do that too but i dont remember

prime bronze

Was basically an old school Nokia with how I treated it too

i get ansiety by looking at photos of these

prime bronze

Getting slivers just looking at it

rigid thicket
#

Yeah, I wish there were more study phones since almost everyone uses a case anyway.

naive hollow
#

mmm i love inhaling microscopic glass shards

sour ore
#

i mean, it's genius for the corporations. Easier to break, more you sell I guess

rigid thicket
#

Aesthetically pleasing naked phones matter for all of 3 seconds before they get cased.

sour ore
#

nothing like manufacturing ewaste for greed

#

yup

random tulip
#

Dude. The glass shards from these are like deadly too

sour ore
#

Oohh, Ahh, look how shiny it is - and then you forget

random tulip
#

Cracked one once and brushed a finger. Took forever to get it out

sour ore
#

The other day I cleaned my phone and I forgot the color of its backside

floral pebble

If you built it without the need for a case there would be space for microsd slots and 3.5mm jacks

rigid thicket

I do like using a case in general though. The option for wallet cases and stuff is nice.

#

Or cases with card slots

#

Flip cases if you want bare screen but still have screen protection in pocket.

prime bronze

I have flip case myself, i protect both sides and can carry a couple things on the front, like the card for public transport

I'm more likely to forget my wallet if it's a seperate thing to keep track of personally.

I hate carrying my wallet anywhere

It has a spot in the car and at home and will only go in my pocket if I'm going into the store to buy stuff

Like, I'm constantly keeping track of my phone either from physically using it or just having a hand in the pocket.

If for whatever reason I lose it it'd be easier to figure out when I lost it.

i got an airtag on my wallet

not yet but it's about that time

prime bronze

And do they beep if you need to find them? Like make a sound?

naive hollow

yup

prime bronze
#

That’s actually super nice

naive hollow
#

you can also like gps style find them

#

and its accurate

like really accurate

prime bronze

Ooooh yeah it has the arrow and the distance measure thing. I think I remember seeing ads for it

naive hollow
#

yup

copper burrow

sour ore

Doesn't get tiresome to have constantly new devices appear?

Like, if I am geting one, I kinda want to go away and just play and in a few years look again what is new.

Or that's my plan lol

I’ve been waiting forever for this device specifically
