#Retroid Pocket Flip 2 (Cows Ascended)
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
I'm just saying having a second screen on the top/back of the device would be really cool to have a DVD screensaver float around on while you were gaming
Maybe it's an external mini monitor and a roll of ducktape
theyâre selling bt earphones now so I think no headphone jack
Ok lads, Iâm off and away đ«, hope the news is good when I get back
May the gods have mercy on our credit cards
Because between the Super7 for the Switch, a new Switch 2, and a potential Flip 2, Iâm gonna be hurting this season
super7 for the switch?
might have to pick up an online banned switch
theyre like 99 dollars
Super 7 switch
Why
But also a vertical hiding
oh its 8 30
Why would they have the joysticks above
what happened
what
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
WWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII UUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Retroid Pocket 1 2
Honestly I dig the Wii u layout lol
I like the controls, absolutely
Reminds me of the gpd win 1
WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It doesn't look impressive, ngl

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII UUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was also right, its a vertical in the back there
wii u wii u wii u
I was looking forward to this
Actually no it's more like the XD which is all a flip ever needed to be
So now that it's been announced can we have the picture from your insider to see if it's actually anything like this
I kinda knew there wasn't going to be a dual screen but man it still hurts
just now noticed the one in the back lol
today the new 3ds xl turned 10
I didn't expect dual screen or anything similar, but the control layout looks weird, kinda worse than in the first flip
Oh shit itâs actually a flip 2
Is that a vertical in the back of that photo
significant date for a non dualscreen
it reminds me of "we have Wii U at home"
Is that a 1:1 SLIDER????
Well that's effing hideous XD
I was fine with it remaining a single screen, but the layout of the controls?? Whyâd they change
Flip 2 time
WWWWWWWWWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII UUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!
I'm taking crazy pills, I think the controls are great
and also flip mini
my first thought was exactly like this, but after I second I decided to not be too harsh on the design xD
I still don't like it, but I guess it could've been worse. Or more bizarre
hopium is always the course
who dis
wiiii u!!!!!!!
I'm more interested in that supposed mini version
not wii u
Love that we're getting a lil option as well
A flip mini would be insane
I guess itâs because itâs going to be more 3D focused? Looks more like the Powkiddy X18s in this regard
that's hiding on the left

i dont remember saying that
mini clamshell device with Android would be great
Maybe it's that I just woke up from a nap and haven't had any coffee yet, but that design is just awful. The dual sticks up top seem bizarre, and there's a ridiculous amount of empty space on the front. On the plus side, my wallet is glad I have zero interest in buying it lol
reminds me a lot of the x18s lol
thats the vertical i been saying will happen for months and no one believed me
Looks like I'm gonna have to buy the OneXSugar now
no no
I hope itâs just a good and pocketable Android vertical. Hopefully isnât bulky like the 405 and 406V reportedly are
Yes, that empty space surely stands out... Weird layout makes it stand out even more.
My wallet chuckling nervously
There we go
I am interested in the mysterious vertical though! Maybe that one will be more sensibly designed lol
Would make sense tbh
Glad I'm not disappointed. Just need a concrete release date now and hope the price isn't insane
I just hope theyâre making a stronger hinge than the Flip 1.
DID THEY FIX THE HINGE?! đ
Yo @blazing burrow we got another channel to make.
ayyee
flip 2 mini
Our feedback worked!
Did it though? đ
Lol
Our?
So it was you who told them to flip the sticks and the dpad/buttons
Well sort-of, since itâs got sticks in the Wii U layout.
that was too fast lol
Well yeah. We just wanted to seem unique on the form. Everyone secretly wanted it that way tho
Feels more like they knew what they had already and wanted concrete confirmation, and went "oh, guess we nailed it" and just released what they had already
So 1-2 peopleâs feedback was heard.
Wii U was the greatest device ever made so it only makes sense
those who wants, dual screen..
Honestly the Wii U pro controller was fine for gaming on, and Iâm not joking either.
Itâs better than it looks for retro games.
I am being heavily sarcastic. Just in case some don't realize
GPD is that you?
I prefer parallel sticks and I wanted a layout like this, so I'm happy
waiting for a steam controller 2 just for that'
I like the sticks up top, kinda seems more ergonomic
My thumbs arenât gonna curl up as much
Fuck it, Iâm in
Love that indigo/purple
I mean it looks exactly how I expected it to look. Dual screens is a pipe dream. 3 or 4 other small companies have to try and sorta fail/succeed first before RP steps in
Thereâs no way that affordable dual screen android devices will happen anytime soon.
The bezels look good and small
My beloved XD!
Yuck, both sticks on top is a miss
Idk, why yâall think high up sticks are a miss?
I mean dual screens ain't that hard on a Linux device
Seriously asking
I mean we got the ayaneo flip ds, just expensive is all
Affordable Linux device with 2 screens ain't crazy
oh shit they did it
Always wanted an XD as a kid , now I have my chance
I love my GPD XD. This will be great
Thereâs also the onexsugar, but itâs just a shame how gaudy it looks so far.
XD ergo is awesome
I thought this wasn't until tomorrow lol
And that wonât be cheap eitherâŠ
Didn't expect two pings. Looks neat I'm actually totally down for the sticks on top it's like a wiiu gamepad
Basically just an additional monitor that Linux can drive pretty easily. Emulators that can support 2 already exist. Etc.
another 10 months to wait
Spring release right
Is that handheld in the back a mini flip?
Alright, just posted the rumor mill for the other handheld.
Nice
Kind of worth it though
Yeah gonna be dumb expensive. And probably break easily
i imagine they're gonna use the RP mini screen
just a tease
They better fix it first đ
retroid vertical/DMG
I hope they figure out the mini screen issues before then
Well, it doesnât actually look 4:3, but that could just be the render.
Its emulating one of the worst controllers, for one of the worst systems made. Hard pass from me, i hoped they would have stuck to their usual layout, just move the sticks closer to the d-pad and face buttons.
flip 2 mini
no hinge
That rp mini screen size should probably look better on a flip, won't look like there's a much empty space like on the mini
flip 2 mini
Honestly ok that I own 3 flip 1s now XD
Was sweating a little
Havenât answered why this layout supposedly is the worst
Lay it out like the Steam Deck or the GPD Win Mini!
we have proper control inset, its fine no matter what
Nah, the Wii U controller layout is pretty good, itâs not the layoutâs fault that the Wii U ended up being one of the worst.
Moving sticks anywhere not right next to the main controls means likely discomfort for certain hands
retroid bros we eating good
Might have to reach for those sticks hard if you have small hands
Can we get you to photoshop this whole situation over the Taki RP3+ youtube video
Theyâre right next to them lmao
Idk what yâall are on about
But at the very top edge of the case
I mean, no more than using buttons where that right stick is.
I don't really consider controller layouts to be a deal breaker tbh, looks good enough
It looks funny, but functionally it's no different.
Using shoulders and sticks might require some contortioning for my big hands
Playing on a win 3 for the last couple years I've gotten used to that layout so I have no issues with it
What I'm upset about is they should've put all the controls a little lower to put the stereo speakers above them.
Buttons require a lot less dexterity tho. Monkeys use buttons
Why stick up top when the RP5 had d-pad up top?!
nintendo was right when they made this controller
Learned from their mistakes ig
Yeah. I remember playing CoD on that. It sucked. Lol
You felt like you were clutching the top of the controller the whole time
The mistake is to not give people an alternative when every other device in that class does the stick up top.
braindead take
I dig the new placements so far
Still don't know why more don't just do the normal Xbox staggered.
Isn't this the alternative?
Oh. That. Yeah. Colorway is solid
parallel sticks is the most ergo no matter what
as long as the dpad + abxy ergo is good (looks fairly centred tbh)
steam deck taught us that
I'm happy with this design
I wanna see the back of it
Yeah all they need to do now is cover in completely in glass
I hate asymmetrical, but I get some like it... But I don't run around saying something is ruined because I don't like the layout
Nah, Wii U layout was actually pretty good for platformers and other retro games. We were just too traumatized by the Wii U itself to recognize it (really, only GPD did).
this too
the bottom shell could make or break both pocketability and ergo
Don't think anyone in here is saying it's ruined for everyone. It's ok if it's ruined for them
It looks the same as Flip 1 except sticks on top. I wonder what chipset they will use
Itâs the x18s Iâve always wanted
The problem is needing to spend $200 to see if I'm okay with it.
100% this. Or how comfortable that layout is
Odin flip when?
Only if they do a reverse retroid and put d-pad on top.
If it's a smooth bar or soap that'll be somewhat disappointing
That would make even less sense
anbernic will probably tease a 557sp now before this goes on sale
so we'll have options
Uh Retroid has always put Dpad on top. This is the first time its on the bottom.
but the dpad and the button are in the same line
I'd prefer a 407sp instead that way you can have the speakers be on the sides of the screen like the DS
Well, if you want a recommendation, you could get a Wii U Pro controller and fuck around with that for a bit on PC.
Although, that might also be a bit expensive if they got more pricy than I last remembered.
That might break your spirit enough
That's why I liked them.
I hope they donât call it the flip 2, lets give it a dumb inspirational name like âvistaâ or âvitaâ
I liked my Wii U too. But it wasn't the most comfortable
Wait....
But yeah. If the back has some actual grip I'm fine with one and will pic it up
Wait, WHY are the buttons under the right stick?! WHY DID I ONLY JUST NOTICE THAT!
Do more of a graspers claw thing and rely on the grip for stability
I hate when my adhd brain hyperfocuses.
No stacked shoulders please
I'm guessing it's bar of soap tho
Meanwhile I'm here hoping flat back with inline shoulders.
Or at least no obnoxious trigger bumps like the RP2S
Look, I get the stick up top, I don't like it but I get it, but why buttons under the stick?!
I don't mind stacked. I'll need stacked if I can't palm it
I assume this is why making these handhelds is so difficult because there's very little consensus in this hobby that makes everyone happy
Would have just been nice to palm it
I thought the shoulders were really good on the retroid flip
I'm trying to imagine playing Fortnite with that layout
yeah im not trusting the hinge
I mean. We did a survey. And there were clear winners but yeah
Because Wii U/GPD layout, come on we were talking about this for a while now.
They weren't terrible by they're always a weak point if you drop it.
to its credit it does look a lot thicker
Yeah, but you know what I meant đ
Yeah. I like em a lot. With the lower sticks they were super comfy
Who voted for buttons under the stick?!?!
fair but I mean things always are likely to break if you're dropping them on that level
Buttons under stick isn't as crazy as it seems.
full metal flip with metal hinge or nothing
Nobody. I did say we did a survey. Not that they listened (tho they said they did) . To be fair it was already done this whole time
If you can use offset analogs then it's basically the same.
I do unironically remember 1-2 votes for that, hence why I made the joke about âwelp, they heard the 1-2 people who asked for that layoutâ.
It could be good for fps titles
All that width and space and yet they couldn't do a 6 face button setup
Is that a 5:3 screen? It's gonna kill me if this has a screen I really want.
I think they should have went with the Xbox layout but this isn't terrible
I wouldn't care if they were lower on the face. That's my issue. Stagger them or not however you want. They're just high up there. And meant to be played with triggers
plot twist: theres 17 shoulder buttons
Looks like the same RP5 screen, but the other device looks like it has the AYANEO DMG screen instead of the Mini screen or the BlackBerry Q10 screen I remember recommending a while back.
doesnt look like a hinge looks like a vertical
Like an "analogue pocket" competitor type device
I do worry it's all a bit too high on the face, but the Steam Deck is basically at the top corners and is great.
two sticks on top is fun for games like katamari or ape escape or armored core where you're constantly using both sticks. I never like using a d-pad on the bottom for more than like quick menuing or something but for some reason, if the buttons are down there too I don't mind it
I actually kinda want a flip with the 1:1 720p screen. đ
I donât see a hinge on that other teaser handheld
This is my FPS interactive region now
I want a portrait mode retroid flip
Like holding a candy bar sideways
Yup, wanted to avoid making anyt assumptions since it looks a bit too vague for me to assume itâs a vertical or just a render of a clamshell.
have to see what they're doing with the devices rear end, its a make or break aspect of this concept
Trying to get answers lol
If that Zu isn't an emote it should be.
I doubt that any of the poll responses influenced this at all
Probably not
If they did that's a little concerning because I could imagine it being like swapping in buttons that won't work with the shell or something lol
The fact itâs got the screen inside a box that seems cut off from the bottom controls makes it look like itâs either a clamshell with the hinge unshown, or that its got that as a deliberate style choice for a vertical.
i think the screen is 16:10 in the render

unless i cant measure
maybe both displays look taller than they really are in the render
probs depth
Wow they actually changed it, I really didn't think they would
It was all you
The look won't. Maybe internals?
Zu willed the Flip 2 into existence with the help of the survey
Y'know, I just realized this is the 450v all over again. I wanted a 4" vert and they gave us that inflated thing, then I willed this into existence and in each case it's some monkey's paw shenanigans.
Thank you Zu
Rp1/2/2+
Yeaaaa buddy! Love that they are listening to feedback from the community on these things.
I love how 2d that is
It was all us
We made this happen
Duly noted: more community surveys đȘ
Watch it be a slider
Button color change, an impact for all!
what hinge? i dont see one at all
Just be nice if they actually seemed like they mattered rather than being used for confirmation of "yeah, we got about 60-70% of the Market, good enough, release the announcement"
GC was #1 voted
Thatâs what I was saying. I thought it looked weirdly like an early render of a clamshell instead of being a vertical. But I also didnât want to really assume it was a clamshell.
Watch it not have buttons either. It's all touch
Also, this would probably be better in the #1339773221175824415 Channel.
Need a second channel for celebration gifs
Fuck me. It's beautiful

This definitely would have been my preference, control layout wise.
On a side note, that thing in the back appears to have a 1:1 screen >.>
cant' believe retroid lied to RH to their faces about this just like they did for the mini
twice in one year
FUCK YEAH

Okay do we know specs
on the vertical no, on the flip I think it's safe to assume it's just an rp5 internally
pentium p3 chip
Oh thereâs a vertical too?
I mean
My guess personally is more 865
OMG yes
Why does Stubb's face fit so well on these...
Y'all know what the buttons are like rp5?
yeah hiding off to the side in silhouette with a screen that certainly looks more square than 4:3...
Rob likes to put my face on every gif in his library for some reason đ
I ask myself this question all the time đ
I'm sorry that happened
Because you expect AI faces already for an edit like this, so Stubbs looks more natural due to being AI.
this is getting out of control
W for the community today
just saying the screen on the vertical looks almost as tall as the screen on the flip if they're to scale.
and it looks more square than 4:3
Where is JOEY?!
so I'm guessing DMG oled
He must be creamin his pants
Yup, thatâs what Iâve been assuming since it looks similar.
Same, I wonder if 1:1
I'm thinking vertical 1:1 to take on the glorious RGB20SX
Flip 2 render looks really good I'll probably get two đ
Which makes sense that the Flip 2 is actually the X18S Uber Ultra 1337 Mark II
Red woulda kicked as tho
Big if true
we all know how well that went for taki, maybe dont
I care more about colors than placement. Really hoping for another watermelon. Or a transparent green
Couldn't care less about gc coloring. Ugly.
I would pay 300 dollars for clear orange right the hell now
If that's the case no one else should be taking credit for it either
I'm the guy who always buys boring black... So I hope that's still an option đ
Orange. Blue. Green. Red. Just give us some fun transparent color ways. And not frosted plastic like the flip 1. I wanna see internals.
In terms of size
I just want an all white with light gray buttons. Similar to TrimUI Brick's color scheme.
Transparent black would also suffice đ
Itâs confirmed to be bigger than the flip
But +1 to transparent black as well. I could def go for that as well
But if this is 5.5 inches, itâs likely noticeably smaller than the x18s
I want transparent like the flip renders looked before they released the frost. The renders looked so much better than reality
It looks thinner and the bezels are a lot lot thinner
taki when to producing things for the community. I think it went well for him.
I wish they would have kept sliders though. I really like them over recessed sticks, but we'll see.
Please be OLED please be OLED
Itâs most definitely the same display
Sweet 8 pound 9 ounce baby Jesus let it be OLED
Zero reason for them to change it
The product itself is definitely good
Just needed more help with the distribution aapect
Dimensions wise itâs def able to support 5.5 inches
I genuinely wish it was the SD 8g2.. but that's Ayn territory and they wouldn't dare to make a flip counterpart..
Yeah his evolved form is bringing us some pretty neat stuff tbh
I'd even take the mini-led from o2mini if it meant sd8g2
My main concern right now is the price
_>
RP5 is $215 isn't it?
Itâll be a bit pricier than 5 but nothing too much pricier
$229 msrp
I mean if RH made the Legend. I would buy it
Not including tariffs
Sorry it's $219
230$ sounds about right
Oh 230 is AliExpress price
Hmmm
$229 with a launch discount to $209 based on recent form
$224*
Arenât we technically in spring already

Nvm thatâs in Asia LMAO
Does a clamshell require more complicated parts and development? Wouldn't that increase the price?
yeah
The hinge most likely will add to cost
The RP Flip was like $20 more than the RP3+
Especially you can reference their first Flip
I still want to see how small of an order we could get from that knockoff R36 company we saw at CES
Get like 200 and sell it for just enough to cover the shipping and handling
Just for shits and giggles
Yeah. That'll be the decider for me
im gonna assume flat
I thought it would be a instant buy because I been wanting a RP5 Flip
they learned their lesson not selling grips for the mini/5
Or it's like the portal and they just rescaled the RP5 đ
I'm gonna be honest, I'm probably going to order it now matter what the back looks like... đ
It's kinda tough for me to justify $220ish (pre-shipping and tax) for these sd 865 handhelds when SD 8g2 is $80 more.
But man after seeing it....
It comes at diminishing returns though
And for those 80$ extra you get a bulkier handheld with a worse screen and ghosting and input lag
But none of those are a clamshell
Lol. Your edits are gonna fuck up so many late comers
I don't feel that way. My Sd888 duo 2 struggles on some PS2. I could only imagine the SD 865 would be even further constrained on some titles
Hopefully the double d pads will help with that, and the broken hinge, but... Probably not
But that's what I'm saying, I want new sd 8g2 devices. Like this Flip 2 getting that chip would be a dream.
Haha. Not if he covers the lower one with the mini đ
Itâs not gonna have a 8 gen 2
For now, I think o2 mini is the best if you want pocketable.
Thatâs probably going to be true next gen
I donât think thereâs enough ps2 games that donât work on the rp5
From my experience
I wager it going to be the same exact specs as the RP5
A clam RP5 would be a great pocketable tho
The games I couldnât run on my 5 couldnât run on my Odin 2 like final fantasy dirge of cerebrus
Have you tried Shadows of the Colossus or NFS Underground 2 on RP5? It's barely playable on my sd888
Sotc works fine on my rp5 I beat the first few colossus
Mini is also $100 more. I'm really hoping this won't drop at $300
I think someone said that late-game thereâs like one problematic titan but idk if it was on the 4 pro or 5
Because itâs not just specs itâs also android configs and cooling
Mini is $100 more, will prob drop to Odin 2 (regular) pricing soon which is $300.. that's $80 more than rp5
Your thing could be throttling or maybe itâs a settings issue
I can personally tell you that whatever games are struggling on the RP5 and Duo 2 are either in the very small group of âgames that require nothing less than the Odin 2â, or the larger group of âgames that not even the Odin 2 can play wellâ.
O2 mini has the vignetting on the screen and input lag problems alongside really bad thermals and battery
Totally agree with you. 100. I never had problems with the screen. I'm not a screen snob. Or some perceived input lag. But I know with the Odin 2 I don't have to compromise on anything. For 80 bucks. đ
In exchange for some games running better and switch running better
Odin 2 is very good for those who really want it but i donât really agree with the âthis is overpriced you can drop 80 for a better chipset deviceâ when it comes with compromises on its own
Itâs up to personal preference
Where were the problems with the Odin 2? Not mini. I'll wait.
yeah, I feel like $80-$100 more for a sd 8g2 is just worth it for not having to mess around with frameskip, pal roms, etc. Just boot up and play
Bad ghosting and input lag
Itâs pretty good at other stuff
For those sensitive to it. I couldn't see it until a video showed me.
every single handheld out there has a fault if you look for one
It's perfect at everything else. Lol
Shitty screen, input lag, and (this isnât an issue with the Odin 2 specifically, just with peopleâs shilling for the thing) Switch emulation on it is overhyped to hell and back.
Also itâs not as portable as the 5 and isnât really pocketable like the mini is and possibly the flip 2
Obviously
I never said 5 was perfect
I never said it was better but Iâm saying that chipset isnât everything
ESP once u get to like sd865+ assuming you arenât actively looking for switch or winlator
I'll bow out. I'm not putting on kneepads for retroid. They don't pay my bills lol
I just want a decent clamshell I can keep in my pocket everywhere đ„Č
Yup, your kneepads are reserved for Ayn-only, right?
Itâs kinda why anbernic never upgrades the h700 for their cheap devices
Not sure how much I'd trust the Flip 2, even though I love clamshells.. My Flip has a busted R2
Because it comes at diminishing returns and the h700 is very power efficient and has lots of software support
many had cracked hinges..
No screen protector needed..
Yea, ur gonna prolly have to wait for people to get their units before deciding
Just put it in your pocket and go
Honestly even thinking about my DS I think I'm going to stay away from hinge designs
Ik they fixed the hinges at a point but anything could happen over at retroid
Every chinese handheld is a gamble. I haven't seen many QC issues from Ayn devices. I think that extra $100 not only gets you more power but better QC and components
My Odin 2 had qa issues
The zr button was pretty squeaky and b button liked to stick down
I actually had two
One ran hotter than the other for some reason
I know these devices are made based on old handhelds but I would love a device that has a sliding screen like the BlackBerry Phones
Only hinges I can reliably count on are my old GBA SP and my Surface Duo.
Input lag?
I get it will probably be cool but my god does it visually look atrocious
Both my DS lites had hinge issues
Dude don't say that out loud, I was trying so hard
But yeah I hate how it looks haha
To be fair though
O2 has been tested to have a lot of native input lag compared to other android handhelds
Wasn't a fan of the first flip and how it looked either.
Alongside the o2 mini and rp4 pro/rp4
Rp5 and Rpmini have among some of the lowest, lower than most Linux handhelds iirc
We got the motherfucking crimson chin handheld lmao
âŠOk, Iâm not gonna lie, I donât see what thatâs in reference to.
I think he is talking about the empty space under the controls
In these âtestsâ the mini has less input lag than the lcd panels, and in real world scenarios itâs almost negligible to the average user. Having owned one
Like if they move the start and select buttons down there it might have looked a bit more balanced
When compared to the rp3+ which had okay input lag its true
But I knew the difference between Odin 2 and Rp5 kinda fast
Once I played a rhythm game
Which is still not an Odin 2 mini lol
The 888 is Notorious for thermals, the 865 also has much better turnip driver support
Iâm pretty confident o2 mini and og odin 2 both had input lag problems
Looking closer, this boi gonna be thick (and I can see the stacked shoulders
)
Last I remembered from the new test, it was the Odin 2 Portal that actually did better than most lcdâs, the mini only being in the same range as the LCDâs.
I am SOOOOO glad I don't notice input lag, ignorance is bliss
The mini had lower scores from the âtestsâ that were being done
Than the LCD
Ok, now I need to hear what tests youâre talking about.
My O2 is flawless and I love it to bits
It doesnât look that particularly thick
Buuuuuut it's not a clamshell lol
I donât think itâll be thicker than the og flip
Peak controller design
The top looks a lot thinner
Could be camera angle
Also I noticed the hinge is better supported, itâs longer and covers the whole screen
The test for the device will be the hinge for sure
With the cylinder hinge and indented sticks I can definitely see it being thicker (but I would love to be surprised)
Hope to heard good news about it
Thereâs confirmed no grip for it
Welp
Makes sense
But I donât think you need a grip for a clamshell
I fixed it.
^
Iirc even the og flip had good ergos
And this one seems to have better placements of the sticks/dpad and no sliders
Some other stuff I noticed is the power button is inside the device now
What if the smaller vertical is actually fpga? How wild would that be if they're going after chromatic
They bought out Game Bub!
Didnât Russ admit those were using a method he didnât really have experience with and even admitted someone else would probably do a better job of measuring the raw footage (that being why he linked a google doc to them? Like, he got way different results for the RP Mini than what Jaylash got, and they actually did work in lag testing.
Jay worked in lag testing? Lol
Size wise this looks to be similar to a gpd xd plus. That had a 5 inch screen but huge bezels so a 5.5 inch screen makes sense, it also visually just looks about the same size even in terms of height and design
Jaybee is an input lag nerd
Thatâs why Iâm putting quotations around tests
Yeah, I remember they initially talked about it when they first gave their testing results for the RP Mini.
So he knows his stuff
Ik he found out quick that an update made the 4 pro suddenly gain a lot of input lag
Wait, just nerd?
Ok lemme reword that
is the smaller one a vertical or an sp style clamshell i cant tell
You can't really properly benchmark input lag unless you use the same screens.
OLED has less screen latency so if they're testing based on screen action time it won't be a fair comparison.
Hang on, let me look back and find their initial post.
Jaybee is an input lag conspiracy schizo mega nerd!!!!
Thatâs actually true, the Odin 2 Portal does have the advantage of being the only 120hz device in that test.
It's going to be a loooong few months waiting for this to actually arrive
And here I was considering letting go of my blue XD finally, now I just want to go play on it đ
Yea
Gpd has 5 inches but the bezels are huge so it makes sense for the flip 2 to be the same size or slightly smaller with that extra half inch
Iâm expecting 3ds xl size
With a little more thickness to cover the triggers
Yea the fairly thin bezels are sooooo sharp on this render
Probably a bit smaller, the GPD Win Mini is 7in and the size of a 3DSXL.
Flip 1 was og 3ds size but slightly thicker
I just want it to be equal or smaller than my X18S
Chris early on confirmed it was pocketable I think
Shouldn't be too much to ask
This is def way smaller
X18s had a 5.5 inch with huge bezels
And had that thick fucking top
This top looks way smaller
They also donât need more than 5000mah battery assuming its same screen and internals
Given that they can fit the internals on the mini and how they have more to work with to put inside the internals because they donât need to account for screens but rather just the sticks maybe I could see the device being thinner than we think
And with Winlator coming along nicely this will be like my poor man's Win Mini
Yea lol
Going by Retroidâs previous releases: preorders will start in April, shipping in June
Basically an rp mini but with a bigger screen and no more sticks fucking around ur pocket
Just in time for my birthday in July đ
Thatâs not going to happen
Why not
Pre orders will likely start late February and itâll ship mid or late March
??
They donât spend that much time between releases
Wow that's optimistic
After announcement
This is just a render
Lol the âspringâ date isnât when they expect you to get your devices
Usually it takes them a week to announce the specs and pre order date

Well it takes 1 month just to ship shit out so
Even the RP4 had 45 days between preorders and shipping đ€·ââïž
I think it is hopium overdose to think this ships next month
I would be THRILLED to be wrong haha
I donât really have retroid announcement date to ship schedule memorized
I remembered it being obviously bad for the 5 because of delays
But I remembered it was fast for the 4
And the og flip
The RP4 announcement was mid November in 2023, preorders opened in early December, and devices shipped late January.
So Iâll rescind my previous statement and say shipping in May âIFâ everything goes well
As a Canadian, I still don't expect it before my birthday in July
Og rpmini got announced late August and shipped early October
Idk how tariffs would affect this
Maybe itâll delay it
Ya gotta think they're chomping on the bit to get ahead of any worse tariff news
Yea
We are on the cusp of our hobby becoming cost prohibitive đŠ
But I don't want to be a Debbie Downer after such good news đ
The rp4 actually got announced December 11th and shipped out January 15th
Late March or early April isnât like a crazy estimate for when to expect shipping to start
But they revealed the specs and pre orders kinda fast for the 4
I don't think it'll be that bad, lets imagine its 200 dollars, 10 percent of thats 20
Itâll be more than 200
The mini is 200, flip has parts that are pricier
Itâll cost more than the rp5
Probably 230$
lol, saw someone on twitter disappointed it didnât have a foldable screen.
I could see it costing the same just as a marketing point to cover tariffs
What
Those got binned by blackberry much like the previous clickwheel because mechanical failures were higher than were acceptable, the trackpad had far less failures and even that got moved on eventually.
That'd be the best option to get a modern take on the ds/3ds, but it is clearly years away when foldable aren't even down to mere flagship phones pricing yet let alone anything even slightly viable for a retro handheld.
The promo render is missing the function button
That would be a huge L
retroid
roid
doesn't run android
ok lol
Itâs not even 1:1.
Like, even in the image.
Oh
I thought it was I didnât look at it much
too early to say, but it kinda looks like the screen will sit at that weird angle again.
i have mixed feelings about this.
if they manage to fit the screen like that - awesome! but im sensing bigger bezels.
the sticks look like they donât move much and thatâs gonna be a problem.
their positioning is promising tho. it should allow a good grip. and you will need a good grip, because that big top screen is gonna be heavy.
how well that grip will feel and work ofc depends on the design of the back and triggers.
speakers look like they might get at least partially blocked by my palms.
lol that seems about accurate.
I donât think the speakers will get covered up like that
Itâs closer to the middle compared to the 5
And it looks a bit taller than the 3ds so I think if you cup it the thumb wonât really touch the speaker
The sticks will be fine prolly but Iâm more concerned about if the shoulder buttons will be awkward when doing certain angles

recessed joysticks are hot idc what anyone says
I dig your analysis on this, I hope we don't have a Miyoo hinge situation either here, but having spent a lot of time with the GPD XD and PK X18, ergo wise we might be ok here. Speakers we'll see yeah. Stick you get that tradeoff, hopefully they allowed enough room for full movement.
Also this corner looks like super fragile.
I think this one I got a bit hope
well chris on the retroid server said he has a production sample in hand and the hinge is fine
Because the price this one I know retroid doesn't want to repeat same mistake otherwise they wouldn't made second one
Retroid is mostly do well in second attempt
But this one is their main challenge
I really hope the hinge is on top of the base this time around. It looks like it is but I'm sus
i wasnât pointing at the hinge actually. at least i tried not to lol.
that 90 degrees angle at the corner of the screen shell looks like it might break any second. the plastic is super thin.
The price this one we are seeing big buck on this
oh yeah that needs rounded off a bit
They won't make same mistakes again
Because this one is big buck
lol iâll believe it when i see it.
Fingers crossed because I need this to work
I want this to be my first and Äșast retro handheld and I'm off to the sun forever
After getting ds , steam deck and switch 2 then I'm off đ
you still need a dsixl, wonderswan, ngpc, and deck 2 tho
I am not going to nick pick a render too much. I just hope they release some real pictures and specs soon. The tease shit Retroid does is annoying as hell to me. Itâs something they picked up from taki and still havenât dropped.
no such thing as the perfect retro handheld. the quest will never end
A general prefect one, yeah I agree. But perfect for a singular person's use case? Doable.
I'm too young for wonderswan amd ngpc but for DSixl old enough đđ
No no no đ€Łđ€Łđ„č
A slightly upgraded in physical parts RG28XX would be my perfect out and about handheld for example.
I am curious about the Flip 2 using sticks over sliders.
Yeah sticks are generally better, but super deep-in sticks feel very off to me.
Really I wish more handhelds in general tried messing with 3DS style sliders more often. I might've really liked the Miyoo A30 more if it had a slider instead of a stick.
Lmaoo he will never be able to escape this meme
But Taki DID work on RP3 and 3+ (actually also on RP2 and 2+) lol. He was a senior designer on them.
Really disappointed they arent using the rp3 and rp mini screens in a ds style.
Nah, I think everyone knew it's gonna be single screen, I'm also happy that Stubbs and Zu are giving us hints that the smaller one is also a flip device but smaller like SP, maybe finally we will have a better quality SP.
Just woke up. So is that a vertical in the background!
I am actually very excited if it is
True, but its still my peak android device.
Personally if aya adapted the Pocket S into a flip device with the air or rp3 screen and the dmg or rp mini bottom screen then it would be the only android device i use.
Then theres one x player and sugar making an abomination that bastardizes a ds.
it doesnt?
Ah we're not sure yet, but seems likely since they've hinted at making one in the past
well, every screen is a foldable screen... once
We need to ask Joey xD
as someone who owned the gpd xd plus and loved it im now laying down and screaming at another device of my dreams
except i don't see a dedicated back button on the front so it's like 99% there
This one looks like it uses analogue sticks rather than sliders
which is an improvement
Ah yeah for sure. I don't know if he has internal team contacts at Retroid anymore. He got to see an early concept for the flip 2, which is why he's been confident it's coming. They ended up making it, which is awesome!
He didn't see their other concepts as I understand it, the flip was an accidental leak from their mod team.
They've been playing it extra close to the vest since the leak was discovered.
I have 2 contacts im checking in with. I'll pass along any info I can!
haha, I know, I was just trolling đ I knew you guys have better contacts at Retroid, do I remember correctly that RH started as Retroid's fanpage? But thanks Stubbs, much appreciated, I will wait for more info đ quite excited to see what looks like 8:7 screen on the vertical device, looks like ayaneo pocket dmg killer.
I appreciate you lol.
And yep! We started as Retroid's fan community, then branched out and they made their own space.
Yeah 8:7 would be rad!!!
Yeah, probably
or is it really vertical
I still think it could be Retroid Pocket Flip Mini, would be soooooo awesome
Still, I'd like to see a device with RP Flip's sliders, except with a much grittier texture, like what PSP has
At least 3 things are still a fact of life. Death, taxes, and people sensitive to input lag needing to shout it to everyone and their milkman đ
On that note, morning!
I would be ok with this đ
People have experienced input lag on android before?
(Please don't kill me internet)
To be honest with you I never was a fan of sliders, didnt like them o PSP and 3DS, vita sticks even though they were quite bad they were an improvement anyway compared to those.
I swear it's a genetic trait that those sensitive to it are usually assholes in discussing it xD
I've experienced it but it has to be pretty obvious for me to notice đ
And then I use run ahead
I think so many retro gamers got so much used to play on CRT that maybe it really bothers them (but at the same time they will kill someone not playing with the perfer integer scaling and square pixels lol)
Not something I recall for the last few years of higher end releases, mostly
A few one offs were laggy
i played a lot on CRT as a kid and teen
modern android doesnt have enough input lag to care
unless your doing speed runs or tight romhacks
if 1-3 frames was the difference between you winning or losing on a "normal" game you were already too slow
Heh
if only
Would be horrid
Especially with the Wii U layout
Literally unusable d-pad and face buttons
It wouldnt be THAT bad. Ds and 3ds arent much different and they arent terrible.
What is going on here?
God why analogue sticks on top? Is this a mokey's paw thing?
It couldn't been perfect huh?
Why did they choose to go in this direction?
Top analogue sticks worked with the wii u really well, but that's because it was so big. This thing is going for portability. It's going to be awkward.
when you game stream doom the dark age on this while sitting on the toilet, you'll see why sticks on the same plane rule
It would work
sure it would work
dpad on my 3ds also works, but it is less comfortable than my dsi's which is on top
it is a compromised experience
perfect for fps, compromised for anything else
thats exactly what i said lol, stick top stans won but got a monkey paw for it
good news is we got a proper controls inset so it will probly be fine
One day this will come
For real, all I would need to a dual screen odin 2
could replace both my n3dsxl and dsi xl
I mean the dpad looks very inset
And this device is a bit wider than the rpmini
Is the devise design even finished or are people just jumping the gun?
I hope it's not
I'd be genuinely surprised if they were like "you know what, we just forgot to show the second screen on the render"
they repeatedly shot down a second screen in their discord today and always
nintendo has a patent on dual screen gaming devices
why would that be weird?
but ayaneo did it
Well I don't think Chinese companies generally care about Nintendo patents
And yeah, Ayaneo DS seems to do fine
I think on flip it'll work it worked on the ds
3ds
But then again that was a slider đźâđš
Damn
and rp flip2 is an android device, not a handheld đ„°
I guess, Retroid can add a GSM module and call this "technically an Android smartphone"
the 865 is a better chip than my phone
id love that
I call bullshit
go to retroids discord and tell chris that
Well atleast switching stick positions is not off the table.. right??
Dual screens nice but itâll make the device overpriced and itâll cut into battery
And it could have some really really buggy software
dual for the 5 games that NEED it instead of the popular ds games like mario that dont lol
and i assume it will be touch as well
Touch screen shenanigans on the flip 2 wonât be great tho
So android gaming and some os navigation will be more annoying there than on the 5
So they canât make the device too bottom heavy
That's a massive exaggeration tbh
But mostly depends on what you want to play, ofc
im sure it will be fine, but ima wait for reviews this time, no preorder unless the deal is really great
yeah most of what people play, switching screens works just fine, theres really only a few games that really NEED both screens properly
i need to play the princess peach one tbh
Yea no dual screen
I think in a few years retroid will give in and do it
I think theyâre gonna run out of ideas eventually
You are deffo not getting no stick position
Cuz thereâs not much they can do to improve the next gen outside of chip
And like, better ergos on the 5 ig
I suppose it could be a thing if all you want is first party games (I don't really know about those), but otherwise hasn't been my experience
I think over time retroid gonna get more and more hyper specific
Like imagine them making a rg34xx with oled and a snapdragon lollll
I guess if the patent thing is true, the first company to make an Android ds will need to have a large domestic market
Not sure if that's MagicX, tbh
Anbernic hit a gold mine with the 35xx sp so now theyâre gonna try to make exact replicas of every Nintendo system
Maybe Anbernic, but I think Anbernic lately rarely does anything meaningfully new until someone else does it first
if anbernic made a home console like a mini gamecube id buy it đ
It could be samsung đ or
Anbernic would release less than last year now
Anbernic lately has been having actually good handhelds
agree
No serious duds last year which is good
Iâm a rg nano defender through and through
the rg35xx 2024 edition was a dud
Rgcube situation
Terrible launch but good handheld
Kinda weird to do 1:1 aspect ratio without native pico-8 but w/e
Overall tho not bad at all
Like I wouldnât call the 4 pro a failure and that device had a terrible launch, same with the og flip
Rp4 pro was bit bad like rgcube but not terrible it did well
But Og Flip that one was bad bad
Yea they fixed the issues after a month
Og flip had hinge gate and 4 pro had trigger gate
the rp4 changed the market and was a massive success?

After a few months all models no longer had the issue
And u were allowed to return them
After bad pr about the flip happened, over time it found a crazy cult following
Lots of people opened up to really loving it
4 pro is flawed regardless of its fixes but it was the first truly pocketable GameCube and ps2 machine
Not massive success but the price point at the time 199 on d1100 was money
going to be a good few months of all the speculation with people losing their shit
Remember ayaneo had similar chip but cost more at the time
This
Iâm pretty sure in terms of sales it did great
The flip was a flop regardless of the hinge
But hinge gate really deterred sales
And people really wanted the extra performance
as it turns out these hinges are difficult to get right
Flip has much better reputation nowadays and is much more sought after compared to before
so will be interesting if retroid unfucks it this time
They managed to fix it by just adding a tiny bit of extra reinforcement plastic
This hinge looks to be a lot lot longer
And Iâm sure they really stress tested it this time
Iâm not worried about the hinge itâs always some unique freak shit that happens
Like the rp mini screen scaling fiasco
I won't be getting the Flip because I have an RP5, but I don't see sticks on top being an issue for me. Unlike the RP5, the D-pad and face buttons are pushed a lot closer together, so swapping from one to the other should only really require moving your thumb rather than a total hand readjustment
Rp5 launched without any real big issues besides ig lackluster Linux builds
yeah the scaling thing is a bonkers issue, though i don't really use shaders or even retroarch on my mini
But flip 2 anything can happen
Yea itâs apparently a driver issue not an issue with the screen itself
So weird that itâs on the mini tho
Also flip had some bloat battery
I think I heard about that
My immediate assumption is that SD 865 really isn't designed for small displays
Thatâs not the issue
Itâs like on a kernel level
Itâs software fixable from what was being told but yea so far not a lot of updates
But they recently got back from Chinese new year and announced some handhelds
Eh, I think that's pure AliExpress fodder, probably works well for them
RP Mini seems to have flopped anyway unfortunately
There's just not much reason to get it instead of the RP5
i mean, far too soon to doomsay 'flopped away' huh?
I guess?
i agree rp5 is the better pick but its still the most powerful pocketable handheld out there, and oled
I don't think it's met expectations though
The only thing it's flopped the price is close , screen was beautiful but small and andorid 10 but that one was crazy
Was Android 10 even really an issue? I thought the main reason you'd want 13 is for Switch emulation
Not even but people was crying about it
price point i found very fair tbh
Cough Cough Cough Dna mobile
but people cry about price all the time so đ
Price is fine for what it is, it's just super close to RP5
Exactly
Both are great value
Plus the screen was small as well 3'7 was fine with the oled but
People wanted a 4 inch screen
people want many things đ
Retroid had a difficult situation especially when rg406h was around the corner
If retroid went to 480p compare to Rg406h screen people would bash it
people bash everything these days but yes đ hard situation
in most cases people will go retroid over anbernic anyday
For once honestly retroid made a right decision with the oled
True
i love mine đ btw @noble canyon i loved your mini battery life spreadsheet! tho im not really getting those results on mine
retroid is better than anbernic but anbernic branches out more
You know what
I think I'll make a flip 2 out of paper and test out how comfortable this setup is
maybe they made it this way because they took russ's opinion on "not being good for streaming" to heart with the rp5
Wait, what's the problem with streaming on RP5?
so sad how?
Not enough 14 year olds to ogle ig
layout ruins it for me
Ah, one of those đ well then
Honestly, if it had 2 back buttons to map to whatever face buttons i want. Id prefer 2 top joysticks on these smaller handhelds.
Don't really know how they place it for comfort on a clamshell tho.
Alright I made the cutout
it should be very close to the actual flip 2 in terms of size
Comparison between the flip2 and the n3ds xl:
this is their size compared
the flip2 is overall more pocketable
I tried out the buttons under the joystick and as I expected, it's completely alright to play like this, but it would be more comfortable if they were on the top
2screens Real or dont pleaseeee
Where you get flip 2 size from? I didn't see the dimensions listed.
Wait seriously?
I remember the original Flip being a bit bigger than the 3DS XL
Probably an approximation from the D-pad size
Since it's the same D-pad as the last few RP models
I asumed the screen is 5.5 inches and went from there
Oh
No? The original flip was almost the size of the original 3ds (if we dont count thickness)
Oh, I guess I was mistaken
RP Flip 2 use a lot more of the top half's real estate, too
Controversial opinion but I rather have online shoulders than stacked Triggers
Focus solely on pocketability
I want this to be called Retroid Pocket Flip Zu!
Do you guys think the odin 2 flip will happen at some point?
Would need a Odin flip 1 first đ
that's the rp 2 flip
Stick placement is pretty garbage
Here it looks like they actually tried with inset controls
Oh right
That plus the flip 2s big chin should in theory make it much comfier
Yeah probably
Much closer placement to a real controller
Where the stuff on the bottom are pushed closer together
fun fact: the 3ds xl's shell could technically house a 6.2 inch screen
which means an odin 2b flip is possible
I suspect that would be a engineering knightmare
That's not how screens work if you look at the inside shell
uhh what?
Most screens need more space inside than the outer screen
Nittrx got confused by the fake render with 2 screensđ
I know, bit if 99% of phone manufacturers can pull this off then why can't handheld manufacturers do the same
cost and scale
No one tell them. I want to see how long it takes before they finally realize for themselves.
depends on how premium they wanna keep their devices
worst case scenario they make it 6 inches
still really big
LMAOOOOOO
Oiii
I think Retroid needs to do the first dual screen android tablet with integrated controller
am I right?
Who send him that fake one
One thing is confirmed and that is that Flip 2 triggers will be bigger and not compatible with Flip 1
when every other week, some new newb lore comes out that makes a whole device line look bad for no reason, yeah
#1336037750889250960 message
Uhhhh I don't think that sounds right
Nintendo's patents on dual screen devices in general should all be expired by now
Unless this is a very old post
Theyâve already made clear that they donât want to make a dual screen device because of how much more expensive it would make the thing. The patent is just an easier excuse since you donât have to explain to people that adding an additional $20-$40 screen to what is already a $220 device will bring the price up to Ayn territory, and thatâs too close for comfort on their part.
Understandable
however they should 100% make variant with dpad and buttons uptop
How hard would that be?
Theyâd have to completely redesign not just the shell, but also the motherboard.
the bottom row is inset, they are not going to flip the layout
And then theyâd have to effectively sell 2 variants while knowing barely anyone will buy one of them, wasting a ton of resources on a design variant once again, to which theyâll start selling it for way less and stop manufacturing them, and then youâll finally get reviewers going to bat for the less popular layout just because itâs now cheaper.
This is best of both worlds for sure
