#Anbernic RG35XX SP
1 messages · Page 2 of 1

Anbernic will steath-drop stuff to the RH media crew with zero warning, so we might have one next week, we might get one in a month, who knows
but this time GoGameGeek is going to ship us the Miyoo Flip as soon as they get pre-sale stock, so hopefully we'll have some comparisons up
the good thing about the Anbernic one is that we already have at two or three good CFWs for the chip
which is a moot point if the Miyoo one ships with Onion already optimized for the unit
we'll see
Yeah it should be good 'out of the box' thanks to the cfw already available
I mean, even MM+ took about six months to get a stable Onion release
I dunno, MinUI on the Clambernic would be pretty good for me
no sticks means no real desire to use it for the cutting edge of what the chip can do
it'd be a super V90 at that point
the satisfying click factor will be important as well
ps1 is as far as i'd wanna go with a device of this size anyways
i have bigger things for bigger games
I like the chipset for the other XX units because of their form factors and because you can consolize them really easily
If I buy this it's purely for the novelty. I have no use for it but I'm a sucker for clamshells
depending on how good it is it may replace my MM+ for EDC sometimes
the OG 35xx is my winter EDC because it fits nicely in my coat
give me the same general experience in a sturdy SP-clamshell?
it's sturdy enough that whoever shot that white video felt like they could drop it on a table
my favorite lore about this is that Carl Weathers came up with the idea of him being cheap because he thought it was funny
he wouldn't do it otherwise
amazing
minUI or muOS and im a happy camper
Finally the first teaser of the Anbernic Flip!!! The Logo is Sexy!!!
this is just the same videos posted in the pins.
Can I see the pin then? I'm not usually on Billi Billi videos website. Many of us Muricans be watchin' Nittrx.
the video of the hinge on the blue one is new but all the others are there.
Yeah 😅
and then repeated 17 times
MuOS has Portmaster support! 😍
it's 1:21 of the same three videos repeated over and over
oh don't worry i know :D
kind of annoying as fuck
get the miyoo
I'm just excited.
Yeah the Miyoo Flip probably wins.
i didn't say that
im just saying if you want sticks there's other options
although, as i've said before, the stick placement on the miyoo is questionable and I can't see that being any kind of comfortable
i'm probably minUI pilled for pico 8 on a device of this size...
the new balatro port on portmaster has me interested in rgb30 though
@untold ibex That's fair
@astral breach Yeah I wish I could get back to the Portmasters Community. I'm really struggling right now. 😥
satisfying click sounds promising
If this can run portmaster it's ON
portmaster games with a just a dpad? OK! you do you
I really don't fw the back-lit Star Trek-lookin logo BUT if/when Garlic drops on it I'm there lol
Garlic has dropped for anything in forever. Did BS say he is working on it for this.
yeah in my mind garlic is pretty much dead for all intents and purposes lol
until we get an update on garlic 2 i'm not even thinking abt it
its the ultimate 35xx og firmware... thats about it
All games I play in portmaster are dpad based.
Yikes why did they put a light up logo on there?
Looks like the 35xx has a battery door, so (more) easily removable battery. Curious to see how much space is inside the bottom half of the shell, would love to mod in the biggest battery possible.
All batteries are removable if you know what to do.
People complaining about them removing the analog sticks but no one cares about the STARS button getting axed??
In my head the stars button, when playing resident evil 3 it just says in the Nemesis voice "STAAAAAARRRRRS" whenever you press it
And that's all it does
Its about time!
So you play Side-Scrollers with an Analog Stick!? 🤢
Stars Button?
There's only like 5 3D Portmaster games.
Twin sticks are great for doom, quake, etc too
Doom 2 mods alone could fill a handheld up quite nicely
two sticks are good for doom, but I can play doom with dpad just fine, specially considering it was originally designed for cursor keys.
Most mods these days assume M+KB
Inb4 it uses an sp battery
Doom Mods are definitely cool but we're talking about Portmaster.
This device is going to be a huge success!!
Not all portmaster is twin stick... I only play AM2R on portmaster
Let's be realistic everyone goes on about the games it could play with sticks and then load it up with games only to play the front end for twenty minutes/play the same five games on repeat/load up every game, say 'that's cool' and never play it again
I mean I'm guilty, I have high ideas for my handhelds and they end up playing Metroid randomizers
I am not guilty of that. However I am guilty of buying a device, beating shining force 1 and 2 on it, then never using it again.
One of these 3 clams coming will definitely be helping me with that.
3? This one, miyoo and flip2?
There‘s also that Szdier one
flip 2 isn't confirmed though
and isn't even rumored
its just hoped for
i am also hoping for a 556 flip 🙏
ooo a 556 in the style of the rp flip would be awesome
throw some great sliders on there, maybe a 4:3 display if they're feeling a little different
I think a clam gets rid of any downside to a widescreen tbh
especially an oled
the black bars are actually black and not in between the screen and controls
true, I'm just mentioning 4:3 because it makes the device not as long so it fits in a pocket better and we saw how much empty space a 16:9 flip gets with the rp flip
16:9 would be better for 3ds, or psp emulation tho
also way better for android games so they probably won't do it
a 3:2 flip 2 🤔
honestly I'd love if the flip 2 used a different screen than the old iphone one
especially with the RP4 screen issues
albeit that begs the question of what good screen does one use given how most of them have bullet wounds?
Amateur
Bruh 556 flip would end the game once again
any device can be a flip/clamshell once
Very curious what spin-off device(s) Retroid will make this year
Don't know about Flip, widescreen clamshells look weird to me due to all that empty space
It's probably comfy, but all I see is "this should have been a second screen, but nope"
RP4 screen issues?
The green tint that gets corrected via OS level software kludge (you can tell they didn’t actually fix it at the kernel level because it’s still green when the device first turns on) and fairly high levels of ghosting compared to other lcds
Still don't understand why that happened
I mean, they've been using these same screens for three other devices, why wasn't this a thing before?
I wonder if they ran out of their original supply of screens and found another assuming they were the same, only to run out of into the issues they had
RPFlip really had a good form factor.
Bottom might look empty, but that's room that could have been used for speakers to be placed above the buttons or something
and as empty as it looked, the reality is that when you are playing you are looking at the screen. So it just worked.
Second screens are kind of overrated. A second screen on the flip would really make the controls less comfortable. Also that's a real battery drain and source of heat.
And I know everyone wants *DS emulation but for most games having a touch screen and wide is enough :S
it might be a d900/d1100 android kernel issue
or they might have changed from one knockoff iphone 6 screen supplier to a different one
Also allowed them to inset the sliders more than they do their joysticks on their other devices so it’s more like a DualShock and comfortable to reach down for them (imo)
Love it that they corrected the buttons!
idk what that means
The device has already been manufactured and stored in warehouse now. Maxzhou is on his vacation.
I bet this will make Miyoo finally hurry the fuck up, huh
I mean, MM+ came out what, 2 or 3 months after RG35xx? That's near instant in Miyoo years
so it's too late to scrap the anbernic logo from the front of the device
i hoped it was just a prototype
I'd bet not. Miyoo doesn't need to care about anbernic release dates. It didn't hurt the mini or plus.
The plus and mini still sell well.
Really? How many units?
The last number I've seen was pre-MM+, 180K units IIRC
Cool. 👍🏻
Why, thank you!
Hopefully the LED can be turned off in the settings
Does it actually stick out, or is it flush at least?
possibly not, it might just be using the display's backlight so would be on when the screen is, the logo on my laptop does something similar
at least the logo is on the side i'll never see if it's open
That's kinda what I was worried about. Oh well, sticker to the rescue
is it actually their logo instead now, the pics I saw previously were more of a v than their r logo?
Updates? Release date? Anything real
I know that for a while. Thanks. Will check back next week.
I mean, if their Baidu posts are to be believed, just don't buy the trans color if you don't want the logo to glow
The logo on the white one seems a lot more subtle
wait for the rg35xxspnl (no logo) a few months after
if you can turn the leds off i'm definitely getting the white one, if not i'll own it and get a flashy color (pls red)
Really? I don’t mind the logo as long as it’s not lit
Logo on the cover is basically the last thing I consider behind controls, screen, ergonomics, performance, price, form factor, OS, build quality, quality control etc..
Same, unless it was something truly awful like "POWKIDDY"
I just hope they don't slap ANBERNIC on the front below the screen like they traditionally do
I for one want full rainbow rgb color pattern, just blast it on the night train ride.
for the record the white one might be an engineering sample
if they're $60 I'll buy 2 at launch
I think you're right but I'm praying for a 3rd
there was a white rg556 that turned out to be a engineering sample
that was the half glossy half matte one, right?
I think so, it's odd because I thought samples were always black
itll be a bit annoying if they keep only releasing black and blue
And this has the same chip as the 35xx plus and H models correct? Odd that Anbernic seems to be standardizing on a single ship for new lower end devices, wonder if they are going for the same when it comes to higher end devices as well in future?
yeah I think so
I'm hoping no wifi/bt
keep the cost low so I can recommend it to friends who want an easy gba sp
clear please
hopefully its similar enough that the 35xx(+h) minUI builds work on it
i wouldn't be opposed to muOS if adixal gets his grubby mitts on it either
yeah when H came out, it took no time at all for muOS to be working on it
the plus build worked straight away
the only issue is the mf is in australia
he's on Anbernic's goodie list, so he'll get it earlier
I hope they do a DMG grey colourway or a non-transparent fun colour like indigo
basically anything non-transparent that isn't white or black and I'm happy
literally give me the rg505 colors I'd shit myself and buy 3
or wood
I'd take fuckin wood
I would kill for a NES themed one like the gba so got back in the day, but more realistically would like a blue color way that isn’t transparent
I would also love wood
oh man a wood grain would be amazing
I wouldn't mind transparent as long as it isn't glossy
NES themed is a great idea
maybe something a bit more subtle than that
but some grey/black/red combo
I'm down for Famicom
I had a silver SP back in the day
the buttons appear to be low profile enough to assume dome switches
but has anbernic ever done dome switches?
or this scheme
thats heat yeah
no, never, they are always conductive rubber
hopefully they're well done
or even just using aftermarket gba sp membranes with a similar sized switch to the original
trimui smart pro has dome
yeah
if the original rp2 wasn't so clunky as an experience in 2024 I'd use mine more just for the dome switches
I like the fact this uses the same chip as the H, which means for multi device owners we can just move over SD cards between systems
i think the last one to do that was the win600
for colors, i had a red sp sp i'd love to have a red one, but it probably won't be an option
i think they'll give us plenty of choice though, at least 3
Indigo will be an instabuy from me, even though I really don’t need this one, just always loved that color way
yeah, my first retro handheld was an indigo 351p
back then i thought most handhelds that were gonna come out would have that colorway, but nope
is indigo cause of gamecube? whats the interest in that color?
for me, mostly gba in that color, although my childhood one was white
I still see the logo here
it's still there it's just not as glaring as on the blue unit
True. I would go for this one
True. Not like I need one. I can wait and see. Just excited for the calms coming out.
Didn't say there wasn't one, just that they showed a version with a non-lit logo
If the Anbernic comes out and has no software support it won't matter that it came first. It's all about the software and if the Miyoo gets onionOS then it's over
Bro that's fire, sell it to me please
Yeah, whichever gets better reviews and firmwares I’ll bite on
They would be really dumb to not sell this in indigo
They really need to stop and take a breather. They don't need to launch something new next month. They need to stop and support this device, offer it in lots of colors and provide some form of incentive to devs
Well, it wouldn't be a retro handheld if we didn't need to compromise. It's between annoying glowing logo, or unwanted thumb sticks.
I mean, wouldn’t rule out that glowing can be disabled somehow
Through software or just modding the thing
They've needed to do this for years... They aren't starting that mindset ever
As long as they get sales and the community rescues their devices they are going to keep pumping them out. The best thing the community could do is let one of their devices flop
Lots of colours is something that users think is a big deal, but it probably doesn't shift the needle on sales at all provided you have a few choices for people
As far as slowing down, releasing new devices is practically advertising for them by this point, do something new very couple of months and you help the sales of the other stuff on their site, besides the new one at that time
Yeah, Anbernic’s approach of “let’s offer the black one and a few transparent options” is my biggest gripe with them
But come to think of it, I don’t remember seeing anyone bring that up on Baidu like ever
Don’t know why, really
These are still toys, they’re supposed to look fun
Not black and 50 shades of bleak
Maybe that’s perceived as premium, dunno
They tend to have a basic one such as black, white, grey or dmg plus a couple of whackier options
Maaaybe some have asked for the FC color way though, but I think those colors are just very special in Chinese culture
both are popular colours with good connotations in china, but did they even get the fc?
I don’t think so, they just like the combo
It’s like red and green screams “Christmas” in the West
Not had a grey or dmg option in their cheaper devices, so I wonder if that will be the basic one this time round
But it’s my understanding 80s and most of 90s home consoles weren’t really popular in China
Not anbernic, but that black and green combo on the miyoo flip leaks would be nice if they commited to the colours and dropped the grey buttons entirely
The logo on the thing is tough for me. The sticks are not. The support or performance would have to be better on this at this point
my ass will cut the wires

if it shares the h700 with everything else and muos is plug and play, i don't want the miyoo
You’d pick muOS over onion? Not arguing genuinely asking, I don’t own anything that can run muOS to try it out myself
hmm
(Also we may or may not get onion for the miyoo flip)
i wouldn't pick it if i had both options, but i like muos a lot
onion is top of firmwares for low end linux devices for me, but other options are good enough too
on this, something pretty minimalistic like muos would be more than enough for me, hell, minui too
i just like the xxsp hardware much better than the miyoo flip so it would have to be a huge downgrade software wise (like being locked to anbernic stock os) for me to get the miyoo over this
i might get both
if miyoo ends up around 60 bucks, i probably will too, but i like the anbernic better atm
let's just hope reviews come out soon
probably will get rid of my xxh after this anyway
Yeah minUI would be my ideal for an edc pocket clamshell
tbh since no sticks, it probably would be for me too
i got rid of it for my smart pro cause i wanted psp, but it would be perfect here
hibernation in what sense?
Like I can push the power button and come back to it the next day
And it doesn't lose much battery
i think it's implemented differently in each os and device
but basically all have it in some way
I mean, yeah, it's a thing because sleep is broken in some way on a lot of ARM Linux devices (battery drain, bugs, etc)
On Android you just use sleep mode
yeah i'd love more reliable sleep on linux handhelds, i just turn it on each time and off when i'm done
so i focus more on low boot time
I think people say a lot of it has to do with ancient kernels a lot of these CFWs have to use
So rg35xx going mainline maybe can fix that in Batocera, etc
would be great
Like my Arc uses 4.19 under theRA, that's a six year old release
supposedly rk3566 was about to go mainline
It already is, just not the screen driver for the Arc
Batocera runs mainline on the 353 devices
MinUI has that
Arkos has it, but you have to learn to enable it.
MinUI doesn't hibernate, it just quick saves and turns the device off, it then runs a script to load the q quicksave when you turn the device on
If you use one SD card for MinUI you can actually resume a game on another device
If MinUI supported HDMI out you could do cool things with consolized devices
That's what people are referring to when they say "hibernate" (as opposed to "sleep"): saving state when turning the device off, then reloading state when turning the device on.
i thought onion did sleep and not hibernate, didn't use my mm+ much though
IIRC the problem is that the SoC actually can't do sleep
It just turns the screen off
Like if you run the game and turn the device into sleep mode, it will keep playing the game
Hence the OnionOS hacks for that
what soc do you refer to, the mm+'s?
They both have the same chip, sigma something
Made for smart screens as far as I remember
I'm thinking in the Windows sense, which wasn't a true power off
Sigma star Sd2020 or something like that
It has a 2D GPU on it. I thought it was for security cameras
Enough of my head is wasted on Rockchip SoC line
Honestly this trend is preventing all these chips from becoming ewaste
Or maybe it's a scheme to offload ewaste from China to Western nerds
Ah, it's the title of that datasheet that made me think it's for "smart screens"
Most of these companies serve their domestic market first and foremost
I think it takes a certain kind of ingenuity to look at this and think "yeah, I'll make a gameboy out of this", pretty cool
especially the og mini, yeah
The V90's allwinner F1C was mostly used for intercoms, e-ink readers, car screens.....
Although weirdly, Sega did use almost the same chip for the game gear micro. Which came out around the same time as the V90.
It's like Powkiddy heard what Sega was doing, tried to copy, and then copied the wrong handheld
Doesnt Powkiddy have a game gear-like handheld with the same chip?
Ah, wait, that one's a Funkey clone
System:Open source linux ,open dinguxSupport:Compatible with PS/GBA/GB/GBC/MS/NES/SFC/GG/NGP/WSC simulatorScreen:1.54 inch IPS full viewing angle OCA glue full bondingResolution:240*240CPU:Quanzhi V3S/ARM Corte-A7 1.2GHzTF card:32GB Maximum support for 256GB expansionBuilt-in loudspeaker: 1WBuilt-in lithium battery:10
Or not... what the hell is Quanzhi V3S
Fc3000, bittboy V3, pocket go, and powkiddy Q90/v90/Q20 mini all have the same chip.
It literally will never face me so I couldn’t care less lol
It will face you whenever you open your drawer and look at all the handhelds you own but never use
That’s addiction!
I mean it's a better addiction than cocaine
The logo isn’t too offensive imho. Especially compared with devices that have actual emoji faces on them (ie RGB20SX, M17)
And def better than the “ANBERNIC” written in block letters in the bottom bezel 😵
I wouldn't be so sure
I've seen IRL cokeheads
In fact, I had a cokehead for a boss for two years
In fact it was the same cokehead boss on two different jobs, we got along well even though I don't do drugs
And you know what I haven't seen cokeheads do?
Debate whether they like their electronics with sticks or no sticks for three hours straight
LOL
they just do it faster!! they get through 3 hours of discourse in an hour and a half!!
unfair advantage...
I've seen the man run to the meetings across the hall or down the street if it took place in another building
The "cokeheads do everything really fast" is no myth
Yeah they’d get to the fact that no Sticks is better faster, duh
Do we get a free coke with this? I am confused.
How does the H700 compare to the Rk3566?
weaker, somewhere between 3326 and 3566
You'll find that most stereotypes are rooted in truth
I wouldn't mind the logo if it was just painted onto the shell, but if it's a physical piece of plastic jutting out it's going to be problematic for a ultra pocketable device
If I put it into my jeans backwards on accident it will push into my leg, especially while sitting down
it won't be, just a transparent piece of plastic
So we're now worried this triangle will hurt our tender bodies?
I swear you pocketable people just like to make things up
Especially if the solution is “don’t put it in your pocket backwards” I’m sure you’ll adapt lol
I already have to put my verticals in my pocket screen facing in to not be uncomfortable and you figure that out day 1
hey, the ds lite has a protruding logo too, that really traumatized me
still have the dual screens branded into my outer thigh
One of these days we'll get a trident-style N64 handheld
So we need to prepare ourselves
God no
Not all designs need to be rehashed
I want an n64 handheld but it doesn’t need the trident
But consider… a handheld with a trident style and rumble pack
That's the spirit
I have zero sling bags that would fit in
I am not convinced that is what he was suggesting you could do with it.
Hopefully ribbed for everyone's pleasure
Now my 16 year old self is working overtime coming up with use cases outside of n64.
It’s only five off one of the fun numbers
Imagine the multiplayer possibilities
Teledildonics support in Garlic wen
God I love that word
I learnt a new word today.
I don't imagine I will be able to use this new word very much.
also who chooses to sit on their electronics LOL
When the opportunity presents itself, it will be extremely rewarding
maybe a too complicated way of doing a "bowling ball grip"
I interpreted that as just increased pressure on front pockets when legs are bent
on second read you interpreted better but thats even less realistic and annoying
i get disliking the aesthetic but theres no way that protrudes more than a couple mm LMAO
it's literally nds lite logo spec
Also very similar to X18
I am kinda hype for an x18 successor
Oh right, they wanted to first make another X18 revision and then use T820 for X19, right?
i really hope they can do a good job with those
Hmmm, T820 clamshell does sound cool if they don't mess up the controls again
yeah definitely
having an odin 2 i can't be interested in the 556, but if it's a clamshell...
Ah wait, it was just said it will be a better chip than 618
#890864479657685003 message
well, probably d900, d1100 or t820, don't think they'd reinvent the wheel
Also realised X19 already exists lol. So probably a different name, too
(god knows Powkiddy's naming scheme makes no sense)
X17
x18 i think came from t618
X16
X15
eww
Yep
ah crap
Completely different from X17, of course #1169059294919012494 message
breaking news: powkiddy closes their factory because they're out of numbers to put after X
Biggest one yet is probably x55
(at least I hope so)
Ah, no, there's X70

Why don't their rackets get an X something name while we're at it
ohh, so that's where the POW comes from
Would've been a cool origin story
X38 maybe given the x18 to x28 progression
x18 max 3 pro-am
Oh right, don't forget the suffixes
I just think it look horrible
mostly because we're most likely getting the same material and color as the rg556
Dude that would fucking rule, but that does not look like 556 blue material
This will only cut @strong yarrow because it is tradition
I want that on my end
just graphite
to match my childhood SP
It is weird, I played my sp so much but I can't actually remember what colour it was and yet I remember all the others, even stuff like my ngpc
I remember I had a dark blue one
Yeah I had the graphite one too
I think I either had the dark blue or black one as a contrast from the purple gba I had
My original gba sp was silver
I didn't have pocket comfort in mind I just think the backlit logo is tacky lol
how long before we get modded shells for this one, removing the ugly logo
If you can gather a lot of people who's worried about the logo then you could have them as soon as you can gather a lot.
Me I'm still worried this won't even ship
I am sure this one will ship, they'll want to keep up their 6-7 devices a year rate and less than half of them will be t820 so they'll need to find some others to add to the XX range
I say this 99.9% will ship. Miyoo is the company I worry will not ship things
It's Anbernic. They'll fully confirm a date the day before it arrives at youtubers houses 😄
The logo complaint is a bit weird to me. When it's open and you're playing games you'll never even see it
I mean a lot of people do use these in public/at work where they may care about the perceptions of others
same reason I bought a tastefully coloured tomtoc sling instead of wearing a mustard stained neon green 90s nylon fanny pack to keep my retro handheld in at work
Big ugly light up gamer logo screams “temu e-waste” . Same reason I wouldn’t buy one of those Alienware laptops.
same reason the win max 3 comes with magnetic covers to cover up the game controllers
sometimes people don't want to be a walking billboard for the concept of gaming
hell I'd argue that's part of the appeal of the SP style clamshell - it doesn't scream 'look at me I'm a gameboy' when it's just closed on your desk the way a non-clamshell handheld does
One of the benefits of a vertical is it looks like you're playing on a phone
The small candy bars look like phones too
Meanwhile, the transparent blue rg arc S is not something that can be used even a little bit incognito
Without strangers asking about it
I got people asking where to get an rg nano all the time when I used mine
Did you say it came out of an expensive box of christmas crackers?
Nah used to say Alibaba
Though Aus/NZ are weird in that pretty much everyone had a Famiclone as a kid from the Saturday market so people just assume it's one of those I guess
Anbernic won’t care, Logo = Advertisment 🤣
Does anyone else think the shoulder buttons seem very impractical?
Little tiny narrow nubs
The rg 35xx sp vs miyoo flip debate is kinda weird. One has sticks but likely will not have the chipset that will run anything heavier than PS1.
The other does not but there is batocera being ported mainline on that chipset so it would benefit from sticks
It’s a clamshell all shoukder buttons are bad
I don't have a Retroid flip but I've seen people praise those shoulders
Not that you could fit those in a smaller sp size clamshell but...
If this thing is as big as a flip then yes you could make rhat agreement
its confirmed to have a 3.5 inch screen by now isn't it?
same one the 35xx+ and h use
Any news release date?
Honestly think stacked shoulder buttons are seriously overrated on up to PSX devices
If you plan to stream modern games or play PS2/GC shooters — sure, they're nice
Otherwise inline are totally fine
Stacked are still more comfortable if you can fit them on the device, the compact stacked setup that anbernic used on the rg353ps and the arc are a great balance
Well, Arc was my first experience with stacked shoulder buttons on an up to PSX device, actually
Apart from PSX I mostly use those for hotkeys, and in-line feel a bit more natural for that
Maybe if I did more Portmaster, I had a different view, dunno
It's not Miyoo Mini shoulders bad
I've only used my inline shoulders on ports like AM2R, though aren't there L2/R2 PS games?
Of course, but they don't exactly treat L2/R2 as triggers. I think a lot of games don't even use those for shooting
Like Einhänder uses shoulder buttons to change weapons, but you shoot with face buttons
FPS games like Alien Trilogy use shoulder buttons for strafing, but you shoot with X
Of course you can remap stuff to your liking, and make them be more like modern games, but it's not essential IMO
Quake 2 on psx had a preset where you would shoot with one of the shoulder buttons, but thats a rarity. And it will not work here
In case of Arc tbh I would've been happy if they did just two shoulder buttons a-la M30. Bonus points for authenticity, and also those large shoulder buttons are really comfy and would've worked great for SNES/GBA
But yeah, I know most people would've hated using Z and C for L2/R2
Would have been great with one should button if the Arc was cheaper with the power of a V90 or something.
Just be the ultimate Mega Drive/Mega CD device 😄
if it was just a megadrive device it wouldn't need shoulders at all lol
I forgot what channel this was for a second
the great shoulder button debate was triggered by the 35xx sp triggers looking pretty bad
not sure why we didn't get regular full sized inline shoulders that touch
instead of little baby buttons
Ha, true, misremembering.
Yeah that's my bad sorry guys
It's in the name, SP
My bad too, I have a nasty habit of turning any thread into an Arc/Megadrive thread
No worries. I just had to do a double check. When is everyone predictions on where this will start shipping?
my bet is by the end of the month
That would be a great time, for me personally.
i'd love it
Yeah, I think Anbernic's MO is after we get photos/videos of the actual device, the sales should start within a month
i feel the anbernic turnaround is so fast that it HAS to come out that fast
like i wouldnt be surprised if we have a russ initial review in 2 weeks
I think anbernic had been working on this for a while.
I wish Miyoo would of released the flip first
Over the A30
i have a feeling miyoo might lose the arms race on account of timeframe alone
if that d008 comes out before the miyoo and d00 cfw keeps chugging along, the stick users might take that as their option
the stick haters are gonna get the anbernic anyway
and it could be really bad for mm flip sales if the only thing they have going for them is brand loyalty and the hope of a good OS
i think it will be really hard for anbernic to mess this one up
its just a weird 35xx
we have so much 35xx infrastructure already set up, if minUI/muOS/batocera works out the box with the preexisting 35xx support people will love it
as long as the controls feel like an sp it has potential to be the cheap retro handheld you recommend to game boy fans
I think the d008 is dead. One of the CFW devs for the D007 said they were having problems with the handheld.
#1220773565457240064 message for contex.
Tbf, I think GBA SPs are nostalgic to a whole generation, so any clamshell will sell well whenever it launches
We might get RG35XX SP, then Flip and then a whole parade from Game Console, SZDiier and other usual suspects
It's my generation, and me very much so
I think it's crazy how there's seemingly a strong demand for one and we announcements of some but nothing really concrete yet
And it's been like that for what
A year?
Maybe it‘s simply not that big in China
Though I think they had SP under the iQue brand
video games were outlawed in China for a while. Not sure if they still are.
not anymore
There were restrictions for a time in sales and imports (only some consoles allowed), but there was never a complete ban in China.
Yeah, I'd imagine it's impossible to completely ban consoles in a country that had produced them for decades (both bootleg and official)
Aye, when there was a ban on some consoles, they still let in playstation 2's, and there was a chinese manufacturer that made Nintendo stuff.
They also still had PC games and arcade
Consoles don't sell much their now, but that's more because of their high cost, and lack of demand.
Yup, mobile and tablet are also huge.
Yeah, the dominant attitude in China today toward gaming is definitely “why buy a console when I already own a phone/tablet/computer?”
Which to be fair is also my attitude towards consoles
I mean, yeah, they have a point 😄
Particularly when you factor in the average wage in China, and the import costs of consoles. It's a lot to play very similar games to what you already have.
We live in a world where any phone/tablet/budget PC can play more great games than you could ever play.
Anyone in China who could afford a PS5 will already have more than one of those 🤷♂️
How many games do you need access to?
An RG35XX is a lifetime of gaming, if you wanted to really explore it.
And any phone/tablet/PC they have will leave an RG35XX in the dust.
Also, this may shock you, but sometimes there are people who pirate games.
Easier to do on a PC than a PS5.
There's also a ton of restrictions on gaming in China, makes it a little the harder to get into stuff that isn't already massively popular games with your friends or favorite streamers
This could be delay around November due to Taiwan's production issue from Earthquake
I thought they were all already crammed in some warehouse ready to be shipped
many discording rumors about this one
I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, them just waiting for miyoo or anyone else to release a clamshell for them to then burst through the door with their product
Give it to me now 😭
Timing is probably about waiting for somebody to make another one official and then anbernic can announce theirs and ship it before the others get going, launching too far ahead would allow the other company to get the attention back on them, unlike if they show up during anbernic's initial launch period
Found a pic of a customized ashtray with that logo
I wish we could buy that
That's just the office ash tray for the smoking room
I know, I want it 😩
I hope instead rg35xx it should be rg28XX SP
Yeah I was gonna say, also GBA SP had huge bezels. Would be a waste of space if they used even a 3 inch screen
Normally I'm not a fan of all these devices going for small bezels due to being more scared of hurting the screen, but with this being clamshell all I'm all good with a bezel reduction up to a point
Although even the stuff we've seen the bezels looks protective enough for me
Well the stock SP, with its 2.9 inch screen, still had massive bezels for the screen size
If this is the same dimensions as an SP I think a screen that goes up to the plastic border would still have a sufficient enough bezel
3.5" would be pretty nice
though also means no integer scaling unless you want gba micro level size iirc
4” 720x720 👀
720x480 😩
I'd like the 1:1 4in with the retroid sliders. 😅
I wish mate
I hope whichever Nintendo Executive thought that a front light LCD was even close to a good idea has to use one every day
My GBA SP I keep bringing out to compare is just so sad 😦
As excited as I am about this I do wish it was using something more powerful than a H700. At least something better than a 3566 would be great
I think H700 makes perfect sense on stickless pocket handhelds
same, just give me my up to gba shenanigans and battery life
yeah battery life seems good on plush right? and I see no need for anything more powerful to compromise power efficiency or cfw compatibility or price
i'm just glad h700 is getting a bunch of software support
i'll just put batocera on everything lmao
yeah but at that size and with this control scheme, why
there's not really much beyond h700 and 3566 outside of the $150+ chipsets, certainly nowt you'd get on a $60 device
For stuff like Portmaster and pushing the boundaries of arm Linux
Eh I mean in fairness the SP was released in early 2003, I don’t think there were really any devices with backlit LCDs back then, let alone full color backlit LCDs
Lynx had one well before that, I think the issue was more that there was nothing without shitty battery life that had one at the time
There were plenty. The idea that only the SP was is silly
don't think the ngpc was backlit
As I would only use this for up to PS1 anyway I dont really need a more powerful chip, though if it were to have sticks I would be tempted to also use it for N64, PSP, and Dreamcast in which case more power would be helpful.
the 35xx H can support all those systems
Okay yeah regarding backlights, maybe should’ve been more specific and said LED backlight. GameGear and Lynx had CCFL backlights, which as pointed out were garbage for battery life and no way would’ve fit in the space of the lid for the SP
If the SP isn't a 101. it is garbage also
Yes there are other devices that can do many systems. Im interested in the clamshell aspect.
I think most people here feel the same
Anbernic is always on the lookout for miyoo so this console won't come out until it's on sale, serious words
It's cool, but tbh 99% of people who buy this are not interested in pushing boundaries of arm Linux, and just wanna play Pokémon emerald. So not really any point of giving it a better soc given the hardware
yes
they can push the boundaries with stuff like the rgb10max3pro, not with a clamshell
already hard enough to have a decent hinge
AGS-001 wasn’t even backlit, which is what started this whole conversation about backlights
Anbernic release this soon pls before I go down the rabbit hole and start modding a GBA SP
RABBIT HOLE, RABBIT HOLE!
With the 28xx releasing imminently what other devices do we know are rumored for Anbernic to be working on aside from this clamshel and the 406? Stands to reason that one of them would be coming out after the 28xx, personally my money would be on a 406 just because they have been releasing so many of the xx family of devices this year already with the 35xx 2024, 35xx H, and now the 28xx.
nothing else i think, although i bet they will release multiple devices with the 2.8 inch screen
if i had to put my money on something, it would be 28xx - 406 - 28xx v - 35xx sp
Yeah the 28 does seem likely, maybe even a 30 series at the current rate of iteration from them.
i dunno if there's any good 3 inch screen they could use, but i doubt it, too close to 2.8
I hope we get an RG tate in there, with a 3:4 screen
With a chip powerful enough for the later Cave shmups & the arc dpad, I'd be all about it. My hotdog handheld isn't exactly pocketable..
Imagine a vertical with the arc dpad and a 4” 3:4 screen - it would definitely be a long boy but should be slim enough to pocket…
Alternatively the 28xx screen is already portrait native so just slap that in an h700 handheld built for pocketable tate mode
But yeah I do like the idea of a mass produced hotdog handheld alternative that has a decent android chip in it and a 9:16 for pinball and more modern shmups but you’re never gonna make that pocketable
I’d settle for h700 3:4 for 90s and 80s tate cabs with just enough gpu for a basic crt shader
Honestly I’ll probably use the 28xx in tate mode with the start/select buttons as my A/B a lot
i'd love that for nds
Same, I'd be happy with either of the hypothetical devices you mentioned. It's niche but there's a market & they could definitely charge a premium for it to make up for lower sales volumes. 9:16 would have a decent chance as well since it's such a good fit for DS.
i wonder if they still have ps vita screens around
or even win600 screens
those would be cool for a vertical
Sheeseit, now we're talking
would be chunky though
Yeah, 9:16 is basically perfect for NDS. 2:3 if you want bezeless but I want a slight gap between top and bottom screens so 9:16 is perfect. Would work great for tate mode switch indies like downwell or pinball too.
yeah, i love how ds looks on my 16:9 tablet vertically
It's pretty clutch
yeah, that but anbernic built
Or retroid
i doubt retroid would do something so risky lmao
they only release the safest shit except for the flip which kinda backfired
Yah this isn't something that would leave the house since it's basically irreplaceable, but I'd love an anbernic 2ds-alike or tate device to throw in my bag. They've shown they're willing to take risks before so 🤞
i appreciate that about anbernic, they make some weirdo shit
Totally, love that the arc is a thing
I've stopped hunting for irreplacable things as soon as I realized how much worrying about a handheld ruins the enjoyment
my first MM+ was while it was still hard to get so I never pocketed the dang thing which defeated the entire purpose
Still better then the powkiddy X18
I rebought one when they became easy to get and now it lives in my pocket near daily
have there been any reports of hinge failures on the x18?
Eh, I don't worry too much, have a handheld shelf & mostly play in bed anyway, I've got others as bag devices
I thought the only problems with it were a mildly stinky android rom and not great feeling controls
the x18 is barely better than stubbing your little toe
yeah for me the whole point of these handhelds is throwing in either my pocket or my sling bag and bringing them with me travelling/to work etc
at home I have an arcade stick and a rotating monitor lol
I mean retroid handheld that as good as they can with replacement units and revisions
Also the flip didn’t pinch ur fingers when closing the lid
I am still waiting for a revised flip to come out with the chip from the 4 or 4 pro.
Birth of the Flip 2 will be inevitable
It's not really, until they announce it. Although they don't have many future options except a vertical and another flip
I do wonder how likely it will be for Retroid to make a vertical device. Maybe if they went very cheap end and took the screen and internals of the 2S but dropped the sticks or something you could have a decent device.
A vertical from them could be super cool
I’d like to see it with one flip slider, dpad, digital shoulders, and 6 face buttons since that would basically cover all fifth gen and down
We need more handhelds with good controls for sega/arcade/n64
An RP1S
Now that you mention it that would be sick
id have to consider it, genesis and n64 were childhood consoles of mine.
I am just getting really sick of using right stick instead of c buttons for n64
Didn’t grow up with the 64, but Star Wars had some great games on the system. And as a lifelong Star Wars fan I think they are some of the best… and to my eternal sorrow it seems Rogue squadron III is perpetually beyond the abilities of every device made to run adequately.
That’s GameCube though and all the SW games on n64 typically run well for me.
the Odin 2 runs rogue squadron 3, I'd assume?
It does, and assuming I can ever get dolphin to boot on my Loki that could run it as well. But those high end devices seem to be the only way.
tbf I feel like that's the case for a solid half of GameCube games. Sure, Paper Mario runs on a T618, but my D900 phone struggled with Metroid Prime PAL. There's such a massive gulf between the low end, the mid end, and then what even an SD888 can pull off
Though you can pick up SD Gen 1 8 phones for like $200USD now so wouldn't be surprised to start seeing it pop up in things
SD8Gen 1 is solid performance, you can get rock steady 3x PS2 on most games
Don't really need more performance just yet
I want a handheld to use that chip and a 1080p OLED panel
Only issue is the battery life isn't great on the gen1, need the plus update, also Qualcomm are quick to phase out the older models which is why they tend to be rarer in handhelds. They'd rather sell a new sd6 or sd7 than old sd8
My gen 1 phone lasts all day, granted all I've done is play FF5 pixel remaster on it and loaded up a certain piece of software to play a certain game just to be like 'it's on my phone!' but gamesir controllers kinda aren't all that
yeah, my gen 1 is fine for normal use too, seems to be a relative issue with sustained performance, it is not one of the majorly bad qualcomms but noticeably worse than the + or the gen 2
Does the H700 suffer as much from battery and sleep woes as the RK3566?
Probably waiting on Miyoo
Are they family?
real talk I was very much on team miyoo for the clamshell round until reviews dropped for the micro round
now I'm not that sure on the miyoo
Same here
miyoo does not want to risk anymore new
Maybe they are a one hit wonder
A30 would have been good a couple years ago, maybe the flip started dev later
I'm waiting for someone who will make a similar Retroid Pocket 2s specs within flip sp form factor even it will cost me $150-200
Retroid flip is okay however does not have quality
The things that are problematic about the A30 are not going to transfer over to the flip. It has a different screen, a different d-pad, a different chip, probably a bigger battery
We already know it has a headphone jack
yeah, it's a lot of new stuff though it's not just a clamshell MM+
the a30 makes the MM being good look like a fluke
obviously I still hope it'll be good
I'm definitely on team 'why not put analogs there?' with the SP design
The sticks aren't a make it or break it feature for me, I'll buy the best one that has no large deal breakers
Every company has duds, they just cheaped out and took too long to release the A30
SZDiier apparently gave up making their flip
I like the idea of the sticks if it's actually a 3566
portmaster on a clamshell would be great
Wonder how much an analogue stick or two affects the price
if the miyoo is 3566 I expect it'll be 3566 priced while the anbernic will be h700 and h700 priced so I'm expecting anbernic to be a solid $20 or so cheaper on the clamshell round
The thing that pops in my head is how can can an analogue stick be good feeling if it's gotta deal with the screen and flip as well. The retroid flip has sliders for example
Not much, maybe like $2
Yeah I guess that's more of the conversation
Pretty insignificant then
The thing about analogue sticks for me is that as soon as I play consoles that has them, I want a more comfortable form factor
Not betting on any flip device being Uber comfortable
i wasn't but i was expecting a better product from them even if i didn't like it
I think the H started out about $4 more than the plus and the sticks would have been about the only main difference
Yeah that's a good comparison
I would love to try the H I just always want to put things with a screen that's exposed in a case for protection
The clamshell protection tho
unless one of them shows up in an a30'esque state, I can see both flips being certain buys for me, gba sp was one of those special devices for me
Loved the og gb and the gbc was a nice little bump, but it felt like the gba and particularly the sp were a bigger stride forwards without compromising mobile usability
The latter point was just something the others mostly didn't get, a handheld is just a weaker console if you run out of batteries so quickly you can only really use it at home
I mean Gameboys had pretty good battery life
yeah, it was all the non-ninty stuff outside of neogeo pocket that tended to suffer
Whelp, now that the RG28XX is out I'm guessing we've only got another 2 weeks to wait before the SP drops given Anbernic's release schedule this year ^_^
Unless they surprise drop the 406 to give us a break from all the xx series devices
They won’t 🥲
Honestly their budget devices are so good, why buy the premium ones
55xx with the 556 oled
I want my pocketable GameCube
Makes sense, tbh I've only tried the retroid devices at that tier
you might be waiting a while for the tech to get good enough for that small
it'd be hella dope having a handheld that small be able to play gamecube on the go
Depending on your pocket size the 405m would qualify
I don't know from personal experience but probably
I was more thinking around the size of the RP2S
which I think is a smidge or two smaller
I think the g99 can definitely fit in a pocketable device and do quite a bit of gamecube
give is some active cooling in the RP2S because I know for sure it can fit a decent heatsink in there
RP2X here we come
The end game of the RP2 line
I don’t want fan cooled retro handhelds myself but I’m also not that into gc/ps2 I just want good psp
PSP is interesting because most devices with a 16:9 screen tend to be larger, except for the PSP itself
what size was the PSP screen again?
4.3
maybe a 4.5" 16:9 screen would be a good fit for something with maybe a G99 or a bit stronger
I use my 3+ for PSP almost exclusively
I'll moderately argue the RG505
mostly for the perfect 2X scaling
I think the 406 might be next tbh, the XX models are the intermezzos between the main courses of the t820 models
As much as I like my 405m, I often debate on selling it
I don’t want the protruding sticks and triggers on my hypothetical perfect psp pocket handheld
I think rp flip might be the closest tbh but it’s gone
same
its like....the perfect psp alt
The SP is already made and ready so I’m pretty sure that’ll be the next handheld from Anbernic. They might only announce the 406 early if Retroid starts teasing their next device
I doubt anbernic cares about retroid at all
they really just tend to do their own thing
Guess I got the rp3+ where the sticks don't protrude as much
for me if I'm putting something in my pocket I want it to be flat
like I'd rather pocket the rgb10max3pro than the 353VS even though the max3pro is way larger, because it doesn't have the lumpy shoulder button shelf
my usual pocket handhelds are the rgb30, MM+, and q36 mini (soon to replace that last one with a 28xx)
so I basically want something in that kinda pocketability range but widescreen for GBA + PSP
(the shape the miyoo p60 was supposed to be)
Yeah I don't really keep it in my pocket
Still no news of this release?
i reckon that now that the miyoo flip is gone probably they will keep it quiet, it seems that they're a little bit of aggressive on the competition with them
Woah, the Miyoo flip is gone?! I've been gone from the scene for maybe a month
no, Sorry
not officially, but they're were sayings that was supposed to came out with the 2.8 new handled
ah I see
i honestly think that will be like the p60 at this pojnt, but let see
There were inconsistent rumours with the miyoo devices, most seemed to indicate they were going to be out separately rather than together and what varied was which one would be first. That does make sense really when you consider just how little ability they actually have to ship devices after all.
i mean, this is the picture that was out, and they just released the a30 with another batch of miyoo mini
and around this tweet anbernic show the 35xx sp, to me seems that they were responding to those rumors
gogamegeek deleted that tweet btw
yeah i know, but the timing for the rest was right
i presume was more from miyoo side, now they don't have anymore a date for the flip
recent estimations are "this summer"
but man a30 launched in such a sorry state that I really don't wanna wait for the flip anymore
Once it does come out, if it does, it'll likely be the same story as the a30 and mini with small stock batches
And all selling out super fast etc
The flip is supposed to be a 3566 as well, miyoo will get nosebleeds at the thought of working with such insane power levels in a handheld. 😄
I’d imagine the next 6 handheld comes out, then this
that's what I think too
406 🤞
or finally a tate mode/NDS portrait screen handheld
honestly if they launch a 960x720 pocketable 4" handheld with a t820 and it reviews well I'm selling my odin 2
Once Kodi works out I tell ya...
Anbernic’s RG 35XX SP Flip
Anbernic RG35XX SP revealed
The software bezel threw me for a sec lol
Really looking forward to this, also really looking forward to the 406 so looks like Anbernic will get more of my money one way or another.
That software bezel is actually awesome and I want it
Confirms a sensor in the clamshell to put it into sleep
honestly that software bezel is an indication the screen has really good darks.
had the bezel show up on my 28xx, i removed it from there but it looks good here
Hope this can be turned on or off, so that when a full on media player becomes available, I might be able to use it as a noise machine for sleep
Hopefully they just have it in settings
Though they might not want to allow consumers to do that and then complain it's not working. Plenty of handheld companies have that worry
Put a disclaimer on the settings menu that states that you void your warranty and any support if you continue
And that includes turning off the water noises on the menus
Thatd probably tank the company lmao
Why is the d-pad on the right?
Marketing thought the pic would look better with the screen to the left, so they reversed it but they didn't realize it would make this happen.
So what’s the story, does this thing have that stupid logo protruding from the back of the screen or not? It isn’t visible in most of the shots in the video but it’s definitely noticeable in a few.
Yeah, I was wondering that too 🤔
The device in main video seems to have the logo sunk in
And it might just look like it protrudes when the light is on
Mfw they make the light pop in and out
If it auto sleeps when it closes, I'll take the dumb logo
Just bought a 28xx. Would still buy this
I got fooled by that bezel, I know it's not close to actually being identical to a SP but it gives perfect vibes
I just realized the shoulder buttons are designed the same way?
Yeah, I thought they were showing a GBA SP for reference in the first shot
SP had shitty shoulder buttons, it fits
square-gonomics
what do you want, stacked analog triggers?
lol nah, I do wish there was a bit more space between them, but then where would they cram the HDMI no one uses
The Tactile face buttons made the SP too powerful, they needed the debuff in shoulder buttons and size to make them a more balanced character handheld.
Hmm, you can see the logo light bleed through the white(?) engineering sample.
I just kinda wish these devices didn't COMPLETELY go for capturing the characteristics of ONE handheld - a handheld that had the best ergonomics of several select ones while still managing to have the "zeitgeist" aesthetic would probably be cuter
Like, RG35XX SP, but with a thicker and rounder base
Thicker and rounder? Hmmm
Retroid Pocket Flip SP
Gotta do something with all those leftover hinges
This does look more comfortable than the actual gba sp just because it's thicker
I'm not exactly saying WIDER and empty
Nah, like an SP style flip
https://retrogamerepairshop.com/products/laminated-slate-by-makho?_pos=1&_sid=14bd6c32b&_ss=r someone just needs to make the equivalent to this or the boxypixel unhinged for this and we can finally have a vertical handheld!
Slate shell by Makhowith backlight kit included This shell is made from CNC machined materials. Some tool paths and other work markings may be visible due to this process. Anodized colors may vary between batches. Colors may not match exactly match the photos. Materials other than aluminum may tarnish and form a patina
Ah, RP2 flip, instead of RP3 flip
The buttons are ever so slightly more centered as well
I think an sp with the aesthetic styling of the more rounded sega consoles could be neat
Gimme that Sega d-pad
YES!! ABSOLUTELY! With clicky dome switch buttons swapped with old school membrane buttons as well!
Could recycle old make-up tins for the shdll
I'm not at all a fan of the SP personally so I haven't really been considering either of these upcoming compact clamshells, but this does look pretty neat. I'm interested in at least seeing how it ends up faring
Oh shit wait does it have dome switch buttons to match the SP??? That would make me almost consider it lol
Looks that way, I trust anbernic to get the hinge right out of any of them
Doesn't have a lot of options left really
Yeah somebody gave GBA clicky buttons, and now somebody's giving GBASP soft buttons
Hell yeah
I should try gba clicky buttons, though that's one system where I have nostalgia for it's original membranes so idk
I do have two modded original GBAs, I should probably try that on one of them
Anyway, since all signs point toward this also being a H700, how's sleep mode working on 35XX Plus/H?
HDMI is like the most useful feature if a handheld has Bluetooth
My phone has Bluetooth and it doesn't need hdmi 🙂
I've never once used either, I get it's a popular domestic market feature, but there are much less fiddly ways to play on a big screen. Most of the time I see people try it once or twice & then never use it again.
Hdmi is for boomers with bad eyesight and for people who invite girls over to watch Netflix but they pull out an old laptop full of torrents instead
If it could Bluetooth to a controller I might get some use out of HDMI.
Probably not though
I mean if you own an x86 handheld or a laptop I dunno why you’d ever consolize a retro handheld
I can see the novelty
Or if you live in a bad area and don't want to risk taking a bag with your deck/laptop
Like to a friends house I mean
Xperia Play design bottons.
UI
ES-DE
What does Spanish and German have to do with anything
Actually one valid thing
If you have quick resume
Play in the hand outside, play on the TV at night
That sounds wrong
Well if Kodi gets implemented, we can unleash that untapped potential too
I use my retroid pocket 3+ like every time I'm at work for lunch
Just have an sn30pro and it's basically like a retro switch
Personally haven't done it with a Linux handheld tho so maybe it's different
A laptop is a lot more to bring around
And so is a steam deck
Android is a lot less fiddly with video out than Linux, but it's still not a use-case most people care about
Becomes great when you basically have a dock ready to go at home
Don't need to have a second device to play games on your TV
Just plug in handheld and done
Save files all on one device, etc.
I get it, but I already have other devices for that which are better suited for big screen, I'd wager most people here do
If the game runs on the little handheld and does HDMI out no problem to the TV seems well suited enough for me
It's not for everyone but hey if people try to convince companies to not include HDMI out on their devices I'll pull up hands lol
It's a pain, especially on Linux devices, between turning BT on, pairing & plugging things in. The image quality is almost always bad too. That 720p the rp3+ outputs wouldn't look good on any of my displays. I'd rather save a few bucks & not have it 🤷♂️ On android devices, if the chipset supports it & it does video out over usb-c, sure, the hardware is already there so why not.
Guess I'll find out how painful it is if this device ever comes out, really different on Linux then eh
Though seems like anbernic has been competitive on pricing so hope that's true for this one too
Just more of a pain than it's worth imo, android too, but especially Linux.
Yah I'm sure this one will be in like the $60-$70 range, they seem to be taking aim directly at miyoo so they'll be aggressive price wise again
Soon TM
If this runs on the same chipset as the other 35xx handhelds I'm considering this.
I'd suspect no more than $60, other than the hinge it doesn't have any additional costs and doesn't have sticks so saves a bit there
I'm hoping they just used off the shelf replacement SP or DS hinge mechanisms instead of going the Retroid route & engineering their own. Keeps r&d costs down, lowers the price for customers & makes it more repair friendly
Yeah true if they stick to hinge standard even if it's not the greatest would be repairable
I know some people swear by original SP hinges only tho
Yeah, all the aftermarket hinges suck. And getting oem hinges for something like this (aka, not just using the ones you already have in your SP’s old shell for a reshell), it’s around $12-$20.
Man anbernic is really stunting on miyoo lol
They can also just ride the wave of having the privilege of being the first quality made clamshell off to the races and slap a $75 tag on it and people will still devour it, and then knock 10 bucks off whenever the rest of em catch up. I know I'd still buy it day 1 anyway.
is it just me or does this look like a brick when closed
like this looks too thick to be a comfortable pocket carry
the sacrifices we must make for the Clamshell clan to reign supreme
I just want Powkiddy to shadow drop the v91 with wifi and a better cpu
then theyll both come to market lol
Clamshell fans just win there
hell I'd be hyped if PK released the "V91" with the JZ4770 and Adam
Anbernic's flip looking a lot better than Miyoo's atm
Huge market gap for it since the V90 is dated af
would be nice if Powkiddy jumped in with an upgraded V90
i really surprised that its so unsaturated. Must be hinge issues ultimately? If an even slightly better chip fits in the v90 form factor its a seller. I think the hinge is fine after however many years its been out. Take that design and put out the V100 or V90v2 or some shit.
The take my money meme never applied so hard.
They’ll have an end of summer sale where it drops down to $40 eventually
the problem is they'd need a new shell mold made either way because they'll need a different screen
the v90 screen would not fly today
my money would be on powkiddy updating the x18s shell before they update the v90 shell
speaking from experience carrying a real gba sp as a kid, its comfy enough unless your pockets are super small
it will probably be about as pocketable as the MM+, a little thicker and a hair wider but then a decent bit shorter
yeah
i saw that stroke you deleted
I was wiping my laptop screen with a microfibre cloth and decided to do the keyboard while I was at it lol
but yeah the SP is thicker than the MM by 2mm (roughly 10% thicker) and then the anbernic looks like it might be a hair thicker than the SP again
it looks way thicker in the video because of how much thinner the top part of the shell is
I expect it to be within 2 or 3 mm at most based on the videos in terms of thickness when closed
just a bit more bottom heavy than the SP
from this photo it looks like there is a slight step down from the 35xxSP to the GBASP
so that's where I'm getting it being a little thicker comes from
looks a bit wider and taller too
like 1-2mm larger in all three dimensions
I doubt it
probably 3.5" 640x480 like the 35xxH/+
luckily the h700 has a gpu so you can do some shaders to deal with the uneven res scale
the video had a software bezel under the gba gameplay
the 3.5" 640x480 is more versatile for an all rounder device, I admit
yeah, I can sympathize with wanting a perfect GBA handheld even if that compromises some other systems (though 3" 720x480 is a screen that exists...) but at the same time my personal use for a clamshell like this would be PSX rpgs
I seem to be the only person who thinks 3:2 GBA games look fantastic on a 3.5" 640x480 screen without any shaders or filters. The pixels all look clean and sharp around the edges to my eyes, so I never understood what all the scaling full was about. Yeah, it's not a perfect integer scale, but everything looks nice and sharp to my eyes.
the issue is individual pixels can shrink or grow as they scroll across the screen
so you get a weird shimmer effect on backgrounds in sidescrollers or moving projectiles just look kinda 'dirty'
it's not like terrible but I do prefer to use the sharp shimmerless shader just to smooth it out a bit
https://github.com/Woohyun-Kang/Sharp-Shimmerless-Shader this has a great 3 way comparison shot
the examples there are 240p game on 320p screen, which is a worse scenario than 240x160 game on 640x480 screen though so the differences are even more subtle on GBA and a 480p handheld
how does this differ from sharp bilinear simple
that also aims to reduce shimmering
that's the left comparison in that video
how does it differ?
sharp bilinear reduces shimmering but it also interpolates more pixels (which causes a bit of blur)
sharp shimmerless is meant to have fewer interpolated pixels so it's chunkier than the bilinear filtering stuff
it does an automatic interger prescale based on the image
separately for horizontal and vertical
the biliear with prescale is shown on the right image (in this case 2x which I assume is what the simple would select for you when talking about a 240p game on a 320p screen)
which sharpens a lot compared to the one with no prescale but introduces shimmering due to aliasing
i mean the point of the simple shader is to also reduce shimmering and pixel wobble
so i was wondering how it would compare
Yeah, would have to do a similar side by side to see if the simple is any better than the two already shown
pops on LCD3X
I feel like 2.66x res isn't enough to get as good of a grid as I'd like
like I want each pixel to be transformed into at least a 3x3 square so you can have the centre part be brighter than the edges
I just want the grid look to give me that vibe of the old GBA screen
yeah, I use grid shaders on some stuff
mostly GB though
especially with the lack of colour I want the grid
it's mostly a game by game thing for me with GBA
with GB/C I set it for the whole core
GBC I'm on the fence for grid or not
I like to LCD grid GBA on higher res screens (like my odin 2)
it looks a bit too dirty to me on 480p
haven't tried it on a 720 yet
Can do GBA grid on 480p with GammaOS defaults. Enable gba lcd shader, make sure normal4x cpu filter still applied
I'll have to try it on my 405v - right now I'm playing drilldozer on it just with the sharp shimmerless and no grid
I'm of two minds on this - I like CRT shaders on a big high res screen (like my computer monitor or laptop) but CRT on a low res screen is a hard effect to do well and CRT on a handheld feels incredibly anachronistic
so yeah an LCD grid shader on a home console game almost is like 'what if they ported this snes game to gameboy colour?'
or 'what if nintendo made the nomad instead of sega'?
to me crt doesn't make sense on something you're holding, no
and for me the nostalgic handheld vibe is a very noticeable lcd grid
although probably my most time emulating gba has been on my pc with 2xsai lmao
dumbass kid
I use megabezel on my desktop because I can’t have my 4060 just sitting idle while I play 8/16 bit pixel games
I’m honestly surprised nobody is selling a modern CRT lol
Some arcade purists out there would pay thousands for a “perfect” brand new one surely
if Analogue was making those CRTs it'd be well over $600 before taxes and shipping
i saw some new ones from china recently
it would probly be possible to miniaturize the electron gun and cathode tube now with the lasers we have available today
ds and playstation will be fine on this device
clamshell FF9 here we goo
Yeah the gba sp is probably not the most ergonomic shape for action games but this looks like a hell of a pocket rpg machine
clamshell FF7 here we goo
FFT*
considering what theyve been able to achieve with the 28xx, if they get a good enough chip with a big enough battery, i could see it being impressive
new best pocket pal on the way it seems
its supposed to be the same chip
if they get larger than a 3100mah battery in there then, i imagine itll do well
yeah I think part of the 28xx battery life is the screen being small and not super bright
but the h700 is an efficient chip
way better than the A30 lol
2-ish year old SoC vs 12-ish year old SoC
yeah
should still easily see 6 hours with the bigger screen its gonna have
and a 3k mah battery
which i think we can agree is "enough"
heck if the 28xx only did 4 it would still be good
the 35xx plus is 3300 mAh so maybe that's what we'll get in the SP
hopefully
the extra 200mAh probably wouldn't be enough to offset the bigger screen and (hopefully) wifi but it should be as good as the plus battery life wise
since if this has wifi it's just a 35xx plus in clamshell shape
I already have a RG35XX Plus with Batocera that's my go-to small handheld, but I gotta admit I do kinda want a 28XX and a 35XX SP as well even though they're the exact same thing as what I already have but in a different form factor XD
The fond memories of years past with my cousins and our SPs playing under the cover in bed and slamming them shut when parents came in mean this is a mandatory buy for me, thank you papa Anbernic
i had a gba and a gb micro and an sp all in my collection at one point... same idea, same power but different form factor
Now its just the micro and the 28xx
This was me too but with my nephews (we're only a few years apart). I've already considered buying them one of these things 😅
You can certainly try one of those. Usually it's integer prescale -> additional scaling w/ linear interpolation that makes everything just work
Play Eternal Darkness
I recommend looking in the pixel-art-scaling directory in the standard RetroArch shaders for alternative shaders. (On GLSL, most are still in the interpolation directory.) There's many methods to choose from there that do not rely on an external repository -- you can simply get them with RA's online updater.
I compared a bunch of them and then made my own some time ago. Most of them offer really similar performance to each other.
Some criticism on the "sharp shimmerless" shader:
- They compare against the shittiest resampling methods instead of representative methods such as
bandlimit-pixel. No wonder their shader looks better. - The implementation is inefficient / bad. It uses a lot of branching and other no-nos like doing excessive work in the frag shader and doing floating point
==s.
Also @hidden sky
any specfic shader you would recommend with vulkan?
i don't think Miyoo will be able to beat this
I would recommend one of the following:
pixellate.slangp: Simple and extremely efficient.bandlimit-pixel.slangp: The most sound of them all in terms of signal processing theory. You can even read a blog post about it: https://themaister.net/blog/2018/08/25/pseudo-bandlimited-pixel-art-filtering-in-3d-a-mathematical-derivation/pixel-aa.slangp: Similar topixellatebut with more options. You can change the desired sharpness. It also supports subpixel resampling for all subpixel layouts.
Disclaimer: I madepixel-aa.
The benefit of those is that they're maintained and available with all versions of RA through the official repositories.
All of these are available also withgldrivers as GLSL shaders, not just for Vulkan drivers.
Thanks, will check those out
Cool, I'm curious if you make any comparisons with "sharp shimmerless".
can't wait for reviewers to get one into their hands
Quit getting me hyped! I have no mouth and I must pog
I like this a lot. I assume that when the lid is flipped to close, the device will hit sleep / hibernate mode. Sadly, this chip still drains a fair bit of battery when in that mode.
Not keen on the logo on top but not end of the world.
