Hey,
I bought Ark (base game) years ago to play with friends, but they all quit playing before I got the chance to jump in, so it's just gathered dust in my game library (since I was under the impression it was best enjoyed with friends).

I do love solo survival games, and while looking for a new one to delve into, I heard Ark can still be great fun solo/even if your friends aren't playing. I'm 2 hours into it now (just on a solo 'local pc only' island) and really enjoying it so far 😄

Questions:

1. Are the expansions (Genesis Part 1&2, Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Extinction) essential to playing online/multiplayer currently? (I don't have these main expansions, but I do have the 'expansion maps': Valguero, Ragnarok, Crystal Isles, The Center, Lost Island, and Fjordr)

2. As a new/solo player, would online/multiplayer be worth looking into, or is a solo/local server the best bet?

1. Necessary? Not really. Lots of content can be ported if the admin knows how to use their configs. There’s also almost everything naturally in free maps at this point, and most servers will be running one. You generally buy the dlc maps for the experience of the map itself- very worthwhile imo. Even assuming you have limited content- not really, unless you’re on pvp where you may struggle to obtain the most meta tames unless you tribe with people with the DLC or manage to steal/trade for them

2. Imo solo all the way. It’s fun to hop on and play with mates every now and then but I’ve been solo for years and that’s how I like it best

2. Continued- ESPECIALLY as a new player. You only don’t know the game once. You’re only terrified of what unknown monsters lies in the trees or the swamp out back once. The fresh experience of not knowing everything and gradually learning is one of the best times I had with the game to this day.. and you’ve got one shot at it that playing on a big server will ruin. Make the most of it
