larger/farther light source = softer transition between shadows midtones highlights

this is why ceiling bounce has such a pleasing look to it

a huge part of the ceiling turns into a light source

lots of spill comes back down from that

you could point it directly but just have it a tad farther at lower power

your internal flash should be at the LOWEST power setting if possible

if not try to just use it to soften the blacks on your subject
