#I feel like I've been going about manual mode all wrong

So, I've been dabbling around with my camera since 2017 . Its been very on and off and as of recent years I've been rather avoidant until a few days ago.

I went out to a state park close to where I live and I spent the day out there to be by myself and take photos with out any plan. When I was taking photos I noticed that I may be treating my manual mode all wrong. I was using all the settings just to get the exposure meter balanced rather than balancing out the settings themselves. Due to the law of averages I always end up with good pictures but It always feels like it was on accident and that I really don't understand what I'm doing with the settings besides balancing the exposure.

I understand what the settings do but how each would effect a photo I'm afraid I don't fully grasp the difference between f/5.6 to f/8 in a photo as an example. Or say how photos differentiate according to settings. For example having a fast SS and also a tight aperture I know I'll need a higher ISO but in terms of what it'll look like I just assume the picture will have a lot of noise. I find my self indiscriminately changing both SS and aperture only thinking about how under exposed or over exposed the image will be. But the other effects I'm aware but I guess to this point I've ignored.

I feel there is no wrong way but I feel all this time I've missed/ignored fundamental thing.
