I’m in the US, France is just interesting because it’s one of the European countries to use a similar system to ours for electing presidents

The specifics are different, but as far as I know you can’t vote a French president out before their term is up

in sweden the people vote for individual parties, whichever parties get above 4% of the nation wide votes end up in parliament and then out of those that pass that bar, a constellation is formed to reach a government with 50%+

this means in theory that one party can get 49% of the countrys votes, and 10 other parties can get 5% each, then join forces and run the country

i dont think any country has a system everyone agrees upon is great

That’s only true for the Presidential contest, essentially it allows the states to choose the president rather than the direct popular vote

That's interesting, I feel like it's good that a party can get rid of their chancellor in case they don't agree anymore, just so less power is in the hands of the chancellor

the president is elected by something called the electoral college, which operates outside the legislative system

the electoral college is just a fancy name for a group of electors that each state chooses

each state has a certain number of electors based on its population, for a total of 538 electors

so, for example, California has 54 electors

in a presidential election year, California will hold a popular vote, and whichever candidate wins that vote is given those 54 electors

mostly the idea was to ensure that the states chose the president, because the country is a union of states

But that's a problem with the German system as well, if they have under 5% of the votes they can't get in the paralament so many people rather vote big parties, so their vote gets counted

The things what the opposition can do is kinda the place where my knowledge of the system stops, but as far as I know they can hold speeches and block votings, so they are meant to control the governing coalition

In germany if you vote, you once vote for a party but also with your second vote for a politician so you can be in the paralament even if your part doesn't get above 5%
