#Bird Photography

We have white-tailed eagles here. No gold
But bro you always get crazy pics
all the birds of prey i see are in flight and can never see them perched
when i go to camargue
or to some other smaller wildlife spots around
but still need almost 1h to get to these places
You seen whopper swans yet?
best bird of prey pic i've gotten from close to where i live
lol
no
rn all i can see are rollers (can't even get close to them), golden orioles which are near impossible to photograph, hoopoes and black kites and buzzards
Not the best strat probably but driving on random forest roads looking for owl nests
saw 1 short toed snake eagle this year but not another one since, 1 eurasian hobby which i haven't seen another one of either, 50 bee eaters which now seems to have moved cause i can't find them anymore and that's pretty much it
i wanna see an owl so bad
Photographed only 2
i've only photographed a captive one
You still get colorful birds though
And you got woodcocks
Just gotta try find them
I got bamboozled hard just now. Thought it was a owl sleeping š
Looks just like a bird lol
Two closest woodcock sightings, all over 50km away from home
Saw 2 this weekend
never seen one and never heard one
we don't really have them in the south of france
very very very rare
yet i don't really have them where i live
they're more in the north
as i said before where i live the vegetation is too dense so i can barely get photos of stuff
i need to travel a few hours away to be able to do proper photography
Still got a higher woodcock chance than where I live.⦠gonna try to get them this week though
Imma go out now since the wind is too strong for fishing anyways
Cuz like dayum
At my home lol
Do you think if my trousers smell like fish itās bad for tryna find birds?
Pls donāt blame me for using ai but dayum I live in the perfect area
Like I am right now
we've helped them survive after we caused their near extinction from what i've found
yeah pandas are sad
Mf they humans apparently filmed freaky vids for them to watch because they are too stupid to have children
Fucking strong wind
Letās see if I can find a woodcock
Probably not now
But I. The evening
Too much woody cock in chat this morning
tons of them where I live too, havent seen one yet tho so not on my life list
only heard them
Directly I. This tree somewhere
Meh
Shouldāve brought my rain boots
Hello, is that you @green canyon
are you referring to the geese or the ominous person
yea i already know it, they're crazy
Geese
I think my first hobby
Is the tail orange
Not properly visible on the pic you sent lol
Tail/legs
Lifer letās go
Two rabbits in the field
I have a slight suspicion I saw a Canada x graylag goose hybrid
It was one Canada goose with about seven graylag
I havenāt seen Canada in ages though so I canāt tell
Meh
Itās not
But probably the start of one. Both lay eggs in nests that arenāt their own so th geese get raised by different parents apparently and if they grow up with one of another species they are more likely to have children with them
only hobby i've seen
I know
now you know even more
I think I know where the hobby has his nest
I thought there was a kestrel nest but now I think it - just whilst typing this I saw another one
i don't like black and white photos
idk why
well only some of them
There are so many crows in da hood here
i don't even know where to go out atm
there's nowhere really interesting
(around where i live)
yeah i think i've never seen that
wow
check google maps
i have multiple times
too late to go anywhere far
i might go back to the woodpecker spot
came back with a tick last time tho
Ah btw, it's flat as fuck here too
that mountain behind the power lines you can barely see is 70km away and everything up until you get there is pretty much level

all i was missing was a low perch š¢
i probably had a few more crawl and fall of me lol
They donāt fall of
Trust me
You just need to tuck your shirt in your pants, put your socks over the pants and use a long sleeve shirt which fits tight
The ticks would take ages to get to your skin
i usually wear long socks, and light long sleeve jacket
But do you tuck them into another?
no but the trousers are usually tight at the bottom
i'll tuck my shirt in now but eh
It works pretty good
I got one tick this year so I started tucking my shirt in and no ticks since
Note that I lie in the grass
eww ticks
So the birds have a hard time seeing me
Was joking
I was making a joke as if you were lying when you were in the grass
triple bif found
Bruh
I got like 50 ducks in flight once
show us?
What an achivement
okay
Gonna walk 6km with all of this now
I see many fish while photographing and many birds while fishing
Hopefully this adds up now
many birds and many fish
@grizzled nebula
is this a good photo
is not my photo
but i'm asking bc is a bird photo in a cage
i don't understand
ohh ok
No. Itās not very pleasing to look at. The focus is not on the eye. There are vertical bars in the background. The subject is centered in the frame. The dark thing on the left is distracting. The subject isnāt looking into empty space. The subject is front lit with yellow undertones in the light.
what's bad about the bird centered in the frame
that's good
no
š„
so i can't take good photos of my bird
This is a landscape shot so not really. Rule of thirds should be prioritized
?
Also the bird isn't focused
You said its not your photo though? š
Apparently not
sharpness comparison between bare lens and lens with teleconverter added
my dad saw a fox in our yard while i was in school
what's the rule of thirds
you missed focus on the eye
Lesson 1 of photography
and you called yourself a medium photographer
Go watch some YouTube videos
not true if you dont know basic compositions
Been watching a red tailed, red shouldered, and a handful of ms kites for the past thirty mins
I'm not the largest fan of this graphic declaring them as "points" of interest because really its the entire vertical line between the cross sections
I'd, personal preference, alter that image to this - including the vertical lines between the points
damn
i need to find a place with all of these
i need one where i can see them perched too
i only have black kites and buzzards here
yeah the parrot is blending into the background and it would be good if there was space to the side the bird is looking at (makes it look more natural)
only saw 1 short toes snake eagle, 1 honey buzzard and 1 hobby
Black kites are cool
damn
yh, they also seem to be the only ones that are willing to get close to me
Iāll send you a SS of my current Merlin
this is almost uncropped
3 minsš
what's ss
Screenshot
ohh ok
Yo, thatās sick!
These arenāt letting me get ANYWHERE near them
i'm getting crazy with all this names for things like wdym, ss, yh,...... š
all the wild birds of prey i've seen this year
i'm getting crazy with all this names for things like wdym, ss, yh,...... š
first day on Earth
?
what
do you have any owls like 50km range of you
not a bird of prey but i still want to send it
ugly ass vulture
well i think a blackbird is a bird of prey
they prey worms
oh i have owl everywhere but i can't see the fuckers
Back in businessš„¹š„¹š„¹
no, they're beautiful
loads of scoops owls around
I hear the hawk right on me, but I canāt find himš
griffon vultures look like birds of prey but they're just scavengers

Our neighborās son just texted me and said one of the hawks landed in their yard
do they like birds
Weāre property neighbors but it takes 10 mins to get there bc heās on the backside
No not rlly, but he knows I do
crazy
Thereās cows back there if you can see, and thereās cattle egrets. Should I risk snake bite in the grass to get some shots?
america feels like the only place where you could consistantly get a bird of prey land in your garden
Yes
New vantage point
Used to be a ton of trees in this area but tornado wiped em out
Canada goose got close to me
Idk why Iām taking pics of them
I will throw them away anyway
I always ask myself this
bro what is this garden
jealousy is at an all time high
Little hunter š¤©
Letās see if I can get closer to the crane
And if itās still there
Was right about at the pin
Come on
Itās on private property
?
Cool
They look trash
the photo or the animal
fr
Because I either get a frog perspective shit photo or a photo like this
frog perspective?
From bottom looking upwards basically
i haven't turned my PS5 off in 3 months
cause i use it to charge my phone etc lol
it charges damn fast
Lowk forgot reactions exist
I Wonder if there are fish in here
I hope so
Gonna come back later for kingfishers
I need to find 4 more species this year to have 100 this year
I logged 109 species so far and 13 from the previous years
or not...
I LOVE THEM
how did u got that?
i mean, i think in a few weeks i'm gonna get some goldfinches to my teasel so yeah
But maybe...
i'm not sure
crazy bird @grizzled nebula @tough hull
the bad news:
IT'S FROM AMERICA
do you have sardinian warblers
Idk lemme check
welp no birding for today had to prepare because im doing a little shop thingy with my friends tomorrow at a football event
Nope
I have loads where in live and have some in my garden lol
Sardinian warblers are goated
these are amazing! What a lovely moment you've caught, well done!
Noooo
ooooN
Should I start keeping track of mine?
The two rabbits were right infront of me but my bumb ah was at his phone looking at Merlin
Like 5m infront
I got a photo of a rabbit this morning
Yeah
Bc I didnāt have my phone, if I did I woulda been looking at Merlin or the Audubon field guide
Nice rear end
Took me a minute to realize what I was looking at
You also need eBird for checklists
No way
I just also saw a deer right next to our holiday flat
painted bunting
I have a few photos of em
Can you show
are they strange?
strange? no
for me they're l
like something out of this world
Noice
how did u attract them to your feeder?
but they still coming?
Thats not my feeder. I assume theres food in there they like
is that ur photo
Yes
Whose is the feeder?
The city's, I was in a nature park
wow
a city with bird feeders
that's new to me
Thank you so much! š
shouldn't count lifers that are only identified by merlin, it gets so many things wrong
Idk if I said it but I got visual contact lol
Here
Ah lol
Holy fuck i thought my sd card had auto formated itself
Was just on the wrong sd card and it auto switched
sometimes i'm silly š
maybe that's because i'm getting crazy because of the exams
Thank god
?
i don't understand anything
Nice words
because he was reffering to birds
i just wanted to share what he said
Maybe
No
He was talking bout general photography
he was talking about his birds photo
well, yes
Yeah but that thing is applied to all types of photography
well i need to study, if i not do that, i'm gonna die
He did not mention bird photography
WhY wHy WhY
because
i will mention bird photography however
i'm gonna die if i not study
crazy
yes
im going to the lake to look for ducklings it is a date
Will edit this when I can be bothered maybe possibly
nice pic
quack quack
I'm scared of geese weirdly enough but this one was chill
Looks like itās not angled
how could you
i don't actually care im just being silly
been ages since i've seen a robin
Vietnamese duck š
couldn't get cose cause it was a staff area in that campsite
lol
AGES
I SEE THEM EVERY DAY
HOW IS THAT
Two Indian foods with duck š
well ok, now i'm gonna study yes or yes, perhaps, i'm gonna die right now, bye š
Stop š
I'm having duck tomorrow on the BBQ
I'm hungry now.
are u making it or other person
stooop ur making me hungryyy š
š
I probably won't cook but we'll see how my Dad's feeling
if only it wasn't so high up
colors on the leaves with the sunset were quite nice
What did this mean by the way I might just be very stupid
Like the photo is tilted
Yeah I was dangling the camera down into the lake and I haven't had time to correct it yet
I just took it off the camera onto my phone and sent it directly here
Wait thatās sooc????
Dayum
Bro
I tried to get levitating swallows
Mf camera focused on the sitting swallows next to it
Especially since I didn't realise until like 6 months later
Nah it was tryna land
But my camera said no imma focus the other ones
what's that
i want baby duckies
strange bird š¦
why did you self react
i'm bored
he always does that
wat
BLufferig willytiT
blue tit
whys it so yellow
juvenile
Ye same
50MP medium format camera
I need that
30fps and precap
these pics could be pretty nice but the quality is too low cause of low mp
why medium format lol
Could be very nice with a good crop, and also fixing that tint
Think about it
Pixel pitch
Thatās gonna have better low light than a7 IV
it's kinda neat how medium format has a reverse crop factor lol
if u have a 500mm itll be like 380 or something
Not if you got medium format lens lol
Imagine that
Buying a medium format lens thatās like 600mm and then using it on apsc
@gilded gale ridgways?
i got my ridgways lifer just last weekend but they were def further away than ur photo
Virgina rail apparently
ohh
virginia rail
bro why did my discord not auto scroll
Tbh these just look like point and shoot photos
ok

I feel like they need some editing
welp got some lil birds atleast today ig
I will go out for woodcocks now
Sun is setting
sun has set for me
lol Iām up north
Sunset in 5mins
Wait no
20mins till sunset
At 4am the sun rises again
sunrise is at 6am for me
Yeah here you canāt do astrophotography sadly
There is no dark night
I can see at night here
500mm fuji + xm5
can you adapt that?
o/ Yeah Virginia Rail
Idk
did u use any sharpening? it looks great
idk why but ever since i upgraded from r5 to r5ii i havent been getting the same sharpness even tho im using the same lens
the original R5 is the "sharpest" camera canon have ever made and even "sharper" than the R5II from what i've heard
so seems normal

that's why we need R5III
honnestly i think it's worth the slight loss in sharpness tho lol
i agree
it's better in everything else other than low light
ur called letroll on reddit?
yes lol
yh R5 is sharper in any conditions
wupp uses r5ii tho and his photo is hella crisp
i guess he does have the 400 2.8 tho
does it really mog the 100-500 that hard
100-500 is super super sharp tho
not to that level
Going out for woodcocks
it looks like they were cropped quite a bit
ISO 104.200 doesnāt look too bad
nope not even
wait till u try it on a bird lol
well that is indeed very weird
did u buy it new or used?
ok well the wrentit is like 10 mp
Maybe your lens is faulty?
used but reputable seller and less than 6k shutter
My best guess tbh
nah it was perfect on r5
maybe there's a correction setting set to max or something
the hummingbird is like 15 mp
i dont think mirrorless cameras even have any focus correction setting
that was only for dslr
ffs forgot to turn my camera off
i meant sharpness corrections
would that affect raws tho? or just the display jpg
ok i'll look
yea so im confused
Damn I think I heard a woodcock already
Yh tbh i have no idea lol
Yes, I ran it through DXO PR6 just to clear it up a little but overall it was mainly just excellent light.
the 100-500 is comparable
sec, i have som 100-500 pics
dw i know what it can do
im just confused why it doesnt perform the same on my r5ii
even in good lighting
crazy how good DXO is
yeah, it really is, it's saved some pictures of mine
yea it was insane
i havent been able to get that same level of detail
im really not sure why
i mean tbf that's a big subject and you're very close
nah lemme show u
one sec
but i have seen u send sharper hummer pics before
this is another aspect that matters a lot, my pic is non cropped
r5 on left, r5ii on right. obviously lighting is a bit diff but there was no heat haze in either one
that feels appropriate given the slight lighting diff
the r5 is slightly sharper because it's not a stacked sensor, also has better DR
ive taken so many photos tho and none of them come out hella crispy like they used to
But i wouldnt trade in the pre-capture of the r5ii by any means
ur photo looks great too that's what i wouldve expected from my setup but i havent been able to get that yet
i lowkey accepted it but seeing ur photo made me wonder if something is wrong here lol
this is 100% zoom with the 100-500
near min focus distance on the 600
hand held 1/250, raw unedited 100-500 @ 500mm full zoom
well i guess i'll just keep shooting
i doubt it's a camera issue cause i dont think the camera itself can even be miscalibrated on a mirrorless
i've seen reviews say the R5II is a slight bit sharper smh
@grizzled nebula you have year round woodcocks
yea i dont know anymore
don't know
i can't find any spot where they've been reported
and i don't really think i have them here
The closest woodcock sighting
I managed to see two
You just gotta know their calls
And within minutes you find them
I heard the call and instantly looked up, dropped my phone and pointed the camera at it
Too bad I forgot to record audio
You could hear it so clearly
It was a male
I think I was too late though
I will go earlier tomorrow
u won't be getting photos at 104k iso
don't think ur cam would even focus at that ISO
I did
Not good photos
But able for identification
show
Here
hes gonna get impressionist paintings
lol
It tried to rub itself on my leg
102K iso
honestly not too bad, followed the bird pretty well with 600mm prime, it was like 7-8 meters from me, or the lens shortest distance. it wasnt far at all
Yeah, my recent love has been following swallows lol
what i like about terns is that they look super nice and are quite easy to track
@grizzled nebula if you pay for 104k iso you are gonna use it
no
this time it wasnt easy haha, it was windy asf and he kept flying from 1 side of the pier to 1, he was fast this time
also min focus distance is 4.2m
ty! the bird wasnt far at all, sometimes it was that far cause the pics got blurry lol
can't wait to go back to camargue in a few days
there's gonna be so much wildlife
I want 12MP medium format
fuck, this one didnt need cropping but out of focus, might have been too close
focus seems to be on the further away wing sadly. Good potential
I think the whopper swan is always here when itās dark
sad about this one cause i was pointing at something else and didn't manage to go onto the tern fast enough
It left this morning and just came back to his spot and was pissed to see graylag geese here so it chases them around
this one was really nice tho, could it count as a landscape pic? since the clouds are really nice
this one is un croppoed, like that from the camera, just made bird brighter
same for mine
nice!
yours even more, what a dreamy picture š
noice, i missed a shot when 2 seagulls stood on eachother on a lightpole, wouldnt have been nice anyway but
shot is unsuable unfortunately
ruined because i was at 1/50 in extreme wind
meh
only posting cause he's cute
which bird is this? i forgot, i have a nice pic with food from last summer. i think its the same bird
common redstart
its a really old picture of mine, so not the best but looks ok
tried to fix the background but it looks a bit unatural so i'll probably just change it back
oh with lightroom blurr?
nah i just did some masking and lowered texture
lmao i love cattle egrets
im going to hawaii this summer i can't wait to see a ton of them
crazy how much stuff u can do with the 100-500
yep emergency macro lens basically
Swallows were so hard
baby lol
They are right infront of me meaning if they get defocused in flight they become invisible on the live view
lovely background i have here lol
The thing is they were flying around a lot yet I was unable to get them
So damn close
I think I should use focus limiter
2-10m
Would have some problems though
i'll be seeing loads of these in camargue
Canāt get them on approach
i'll be focusing a lot on actions shots this time
prime bokeh @grizzled nebula
same š„
i was a bit further away tho
prime bokeh š„
zamn
sad blurry š
nice! i noticed i looked at the feet earlier, those were not sharp lol. wrong thing to look at XD im tired lmao
i went to the lake just now and found baby geese
cute
bruh
just killed a spider and 10 ants came out of nowhere and started taking it appart and taking it away š
Yo Aarvs, you mind sharing your edit process? I finally got Lightroom pc and was wondering what goes into making your photos or if you had any tips
Canāt wait till August
My first kestrel photo.
Poor swallow Stuck in a Supermarket
i saw a robin in a store today
really sad
Yeah Iām in a Coop Right now
I think it escaped though
Still in here but the swallow I did not see for Like 10mins
cloud framing the bird
I SAW TWO LINNETS EATING IN MY TEASEL.
And just when I didn't have my camera...
@tough hull
Why ping me
Yeah
AND WHY EXACTLY WHEN I DIDN'T HAVE MY CAMERA š
what bird is that?
google tells me that is a black vulture š
ohh ok
turkey vulture
scratching I would say
ur welcome
aarvs how did u got that
i mean
that's very difficult to get
Besides, that little egret is from aquatic areas
it's not
cattle egrets are always on horses
always š
i've never seen egrets on horses
I only saw them in wetlands and areas with water
But wasn't the horse privately owned? How can you get so close?
But were you near a wetland or something?
i did a guided tour but you can get close to most horses there anyway
and camargue is a wetland
was that yesterday?
no..
probably preening
bent the neck/head just enough for the wings to cover them
Yeah
is that the max quality photo?
Cropped a bit
what camera an d lens do u have
55-250mm
it lacks a bit quality, that's the only issue š
Cam is in my name
wow 250mm, pretty little
trying to focus on his head with my camera is quite the task when hes barreling at me full speed
Why
I like it
Its short for bird photography
this is fine, my camera is not fast enough to catch those droplets lol
Rock asks why to everything so I've been doing it to him, I wasn't actually asking why but thank u for the serious answer :p
Oh mb
i think catching the droplets is primarily a function of shutter speed... what camera?

yeahh i was talking about shutter speed, i just use a canon powershot sx430
max iso is like 1600
son
itās good for spotting birds from a distance, thatās about it
good zoom and thatās the only good feature imo
i see. small sensor probably too
extremely small
Not bad
absolutely not
nvm this is not a bird
as aforementioned, my only issue is speed
letās see it positively, it shows dynamism
very slow automatic focus, 1600 max iso, but as long as it can shoot i am shooting
Spotted a Hornbill while taking architecture photos lol
cool bird
i watched a documentary about those, they are interesting birds
they are monogamous
iirc
mhmm, there was a pair of them when I spotted them
makes sense yeah
i love them
I was surprised to find em since I was in the middle of like a housing estate
asia or africa?
Asia, Singapore
I guess the garden city reputation holds up
thanks, yours too
appreciate it, fortunately iām getting a new camera
ooh which
yeah iām so happy
i donāt really mind about the specs THAT much, itās just a hobby for me (although i might need it for uni)
i use a sensor smaller than the R7's
fair
i think my photo quality is good enough for 16 inch prints on the regular
the biggest i did and was happy with was 10 by 30
anyways my point is the R7 could even beat my camera in resolution
with a good lens you could have the detail for large fine art prints
just note that 3rd party telephoto lenses are not great with it
and it needs very sharp glass
wdym with 3rd party telephoto lenses?
non original ones?
yes
like from other brands than canon
sigma, tamron etc
mark 2?
no my budget was not that high unfortunately
what exact 100-400 did you get? is it rf native?
take into account that iām a 19 y/o jobless student, if i ever get the chance to buy a better lens like the mkII or even the rf 100-500 i wonāt hesitate, but i have a long way to go LMAO
when i was 19 i had a Yashica Electro 35 and a FZ7 i think
i'm 19
so youre doing pretty good
but i have done work and have also had a little bit of heritage money to help with gear
sounds like a good deal
my free time unfortunately is kinda fucked
so no time to work
i don't work which is the biggest wall for buying high end gear for me
iāll think about it when iāll go to uni
thatāll make me manage my time better
i have final hs exams this year
are you guys ever astonished by the resolution and detail and color quality of your contemporary cameras? i sure am
maybe its because i do not see well with my eyes and cameras allow me to see even the tiniest water droplets on a baby goose's beak
yes
only reason i have this is heritage money tbh lol
holy shit LMAO
i would be on a dslr with a cheap lens otherwise
your R7 could do even better than this!
insane
damnn
im excited for you lol
the backgrounds it creates are beautiful
what is this called in english
black winged stilt
i know the name in italian but iām not quite sure whatās the translation
oh ok
amazing photo brw
can't get much sharper than this
oooo owl
i zoomed in and the details are insane
when i get 45mp they'll be even more insane
light is getting a bit softer now, gonna try getting bird pics in my garden again
damn
i took this one earlier lmao
your stuff is on a whole other level
i mainly use this camera to spot birds
Well the r7 will definitely be a huge improvemen
what lence are you getting
Oh 100-400
yes
iāll be fine, i am not looking for the highest quality super expensive stuff, just wanna take good photos
this canon powershot will still be my companion for traveling
itās so light and small
ngl
(whenever i am unable to bring the r7, of course)
Yeah you can't always bring a nice camera with you
But you mostly end up regretting it if you don't take it lmao
Canon apsc crop is 1.6x right?
ouuuu
yes
Oh that's a decent amount of reach for you then
Yeah it is
Very bulky lmao
I would get the 500 f5.6 but it's more expensive than the 500 f4
lenses are hella expensive, get what you can get
ultimately itās up to you
what matters is that you are happy of what you have
š
Yeah true
Sweet lens though
Nice
Wait, is ur camera better or the r7?
aarvs
His
Please you can find this out for yourself
I'm pretty sure I have explained this to you before
R6 full frame
R7 apsc
ohh right
testing to see if a full size jpg makes it look any better
wait lemme upload both at same time
they look the exact same to me
The one on the left is sharper
i export at 95% cant tell a difference
lmao that's the smaller one
i think left is like 70% and right is 100%
actually ykw i'm not sure i actually see that much of a difference
actually right one is a bit sharper but you need to look at the tail
i've been looking at the face which has no noticable sharpness diff
this part is what tells me the right one is sharper š
would need them both side by side
it weird cause they're sharper than the other in different places
his camera is better 100%
well they're different cameras tbh
R7 is for pure reach
you get a high res crop sensor, while R6II is full frame and lower res
ikik, but iād say yours is generally better overall
itās definitely better for shooting videos and for shooting in lower light
for example i get 600mm 24mp but you get 960mm 32mp on R7
thatās for sure
for low light it is indeed much better cause it's a bigger and lower res sensor
the R7 sensor is equivalent to 80mp on FF
i wish i could have an R7 š„ŗ
Your camera is bad anyway
Ooohh these shots are always impressive!
I just slept over two hours and itās 6pm now
i can take good photos
Show me the best photos someone took with an HX60
@gilded yarrow remember yesterday when you said merlin sound is shit? Today I watched three Eurasian nuthatch jumping around in a tree for two minutes, singing and Merlin only heard the Eurasian blackcap in the background even though the nuthatch sounds shouted up on that sound graph or whatever itās called
someone?
i have pretty good photos
Nice
flappy
Baby sardnian warbler
