quick question, this is more to do with birding than photography, but do you lot just know the calls of birds and identify them by that? I just read a post that some people went out and identified 100 odd birds over a day. How does that work? most calls sound so similar

I think its an issue with contrast, your first version with the vignetting also acted as a frame for the kingfisher, when you tone that down the focus peels away from it. the vignette also carves the light a little so it directs focus to the bird.
