2017 i believe
@tough hull but 20 fps are good in most of the scenes
So almost a decade
Well, zoo does
Z6III is less than half the price of Z9 and for the price a damn lot better and I think it also manages 20 if not 30fps continuous shooting
i dont even really use continuous shooting much anymore
yeah but now people is telling me that i should buy the r6 ii
so idk what to doo
I always have it on just in case
#1497374316680052756 message
No calm here
Be ready to be fast
10fps yet fish is only in two frames
i still would use continuous drive for some things
but for the bunnies in my yard... im laying in the grass chillin with buns
Not a precap thing either because here you gotta focus the fish while it’s jumping
idk what to do honestly
You don’t have the money anyway
I have
So just wait
but i can't afford it right now
That’s what I mean
yea
I know someone who owns around 100+ different cameras
4 of them are here
Oh yeah most of those are film cameras
I could go to him and just use one of his cameras any time lol
i had a sizeable collection of manual focus cameras
but then my vision got bad and i stopped using manual focus 😭
Sad
I hope my vision won’t fade that fast
Do you guys have raincoats for your gear? Or just yolo in the rain?
I am able to identify a kingfisher from 50 meters away without a camera
Yolo
Yolo but never go in strong rain
i can't see the birds until they move heh
Well me neither but when moving I was able to identify a kingfisher recently from 50meters away
Have been going yolo. But just ordered a custom made raincoat for my gear
Like small birds
Buzzards and things like this from far away always lol
Try to find grebes in a swarm of 200 ducks and geese lol
the other day i spotted this guy and i didnt know until i imported the pic on my big screen that it had a worm
Damn
Do you have glasses?
yeah
wdym by glasses?
camera glasses?
or human glasses?
Do you use them while photographing?
no, i use the diopter on my camera viewfinder
Anyway I will learn physics now and mute discord
Do you guys also bring a binocular on your bird photo trips? I stopped using one after getting a telephoto lens
OK
Nah
i always go with my partner and he uses my binoculars while i use my camera
For my siblings if they are with me
Some friends use both. Usually they have bird life lists and stuff
nice!
I do
Because I'm primarily a birder
im primarily a photographer... i dont know much about birds
Yeah. My ebird species list is 98% birders tagging me in the trip
i wish there was ebird for bunnies
good luck with that lmao
It's not impossible either.
Inaturalist? Idk i use it mostly for insects and snakes
we lost too many cool animals
it is cause they don't exist anymore..
colossal biosciences
giant moa 😭
thanks
dodo
it will never be a real mammoth
What they do is commendable.
yeah
Rocky will be the cameraman for ice age live action 😂
But is there anything wrong with doing that? In the end, it will help the ecosystem someday.
well actually it will hurt it more than anything
they will compete with the species we have now
they might also not live properly
how
Just search it
It's the closest thing there is to Jurassic Park
bruh
?
I really want to see a mammoth, a giant moa, a Tasmanian tiger, a dodo, who doesn't?
amazing photo
thats not a bird!
Maybe the ecosystems they lived in don't exist anymore. A lot has changed since they went extinct.
The problem I have with bird photography is that I don't know if I should get closer or not
sometimes i get greedy and crawl too close and make the bnnuy hop away and i feel bad about it
Yes, but in Siberia and similar areas, mammoths trampling the snow helps retain CO2.
help
That shouldn't be the reason to bring back mammoths tho
I don’t know what the current scientific consensus is on bringing back mammoths but I think we should only bring them back if they fit into the existing ecosystem and if we are actually restoring the lost ecosystem by bringing them back
yeah i think probably they fit in the actual ecosystem
Mammoths can't even be brought back
all we can do is make another elephant look like it
but if they start breeding with normal elephants it will be a disaster
The goal isn't to make it 100% the same, but rather to imitate it and improve upon it for the current ecosystem.
If it were 100% the same, it would surely die.
same with dire wolves
I think, with advancements in genetics, it could be possible
Probably
Maybe someday they'll make something that looks like a dinosaur on the outside but isn't actually a dinosaur. In Jurassic Park, they weren't real dinosaurs; they were imitations, but they weren't the same.
crazy
No
i like it idk
i prefer if focus is on the eyeball personally
edited
this is my best insect photo lol
this is why i love the 100-500
this is basically uncropped
Old image from 2019
crazy to think i almost didn't go to that spot
gasp
at that spot i've seen: Bee eaters, European rollers, golden orioles, honey buzzards, black kites, common buzzards, great spotted and green woodpeckers etc
sharpness
this screenshot doesn't do it justice lol
i found a funny looking bird
b rabbit
i want to learn to take better pics
sometimes i wonder if im held back by my old camera or if i would have the same or different problems with a new camera
@undone slate what cam u got
probably a sony hx60
Nahh
just nah lol
I just impulse bought DxO products. Rip bank
oh photolab?
i liked their stuff
my money situation is still recovering from splurging on a super tele in the first place
I do lol
I have one partly wait
I can’t find it rn but I have a bit of mammoth ivory in my room somewhere
absolutely crazy
really?
On the Mini Museum website, mammoth hair is for sale for only 20 euros.
why
why why?
why
but why why?
the gorges du verdon was one of my best birding experience
why do you mean with why
this is one of my fav pics i've taken
so cool
thoughts? 😭
i really like the background honestly
But...
why
idk
bird isn't even in focus
I got it when I was like 5
stupid sony
It’s so pissing I can’t find it
it would be a great PHOTO
where?
not really
the background is epic
ur still too far away
meh
i really like it
Idk I was 5 but somewhere in the Lonetal I think in Baden Württemberg
Maybe
this is an epic background
But in my photo you can see the immensity of the forest
that's why i like it
crazy background
Yeah I like that part too but it’s out of focus
the alps in the background looks really nice
also
Stupid Sony
I'd like it, idk
But how do I get closer?
you walk
walk forwards
crouch
in the road
ninja crawl across the road
i got close to the european roller by going in tall grass
It looks like a forest where I took it or something, but it's actually on the road.
didn't see me until that shitty ass branch cracked
i like to lay down in the grass
Besides, if I walk hunched over on the sidewalk, people would look at me strangely.
🐍
people might give you look when you do photography in general
So true 😭
when i take the 100-500 most people don't really look
Im going to wait by my window for the next week in hope of parakeets
but when i take the 600 it's another story lol
i have had people stop me to ask about my camera
Craziest thing I did once is for half an hour I crawled on all fours through high grass to get 30m closer to a ruddy shelduck
but where do u photograph
same
It only worked out partly
that's kinda scary
i had a kid come up to me and ask how much my gear cost lol
i need to get more camo clothes so i dont look like a fucking weirdo with a camera by a kids park
Someone came with a drone and scared it just before I wanted to take the shot
everywhere
Really 🤣
maybe if you have social anxiety
gorges du verdon, camargue, places around where i live etc
Camo doesnt help with being suspicious near a kids park
What do you carry usually
if anyone has the opportunity to go there the gorges du verdon is a crazy experience
same but with a truck
a camera
Ah nah
griffon vultures flying at touching distance from you
Obviously
:)
What cam and lens
are they used to people?
And other possible accessories
i had a vulture come so close to me my lens couldn't even focus on it lol
yes
G9, 200mm, 1.4x
fuck 😂 the pond is quite large and the only nice "camp for photos" area is right by the playground stuff
Wear i love birds clothes and stuff. Will help you more
Nice
the feeding station for the vultures seems crazy but i've not been able to go there yet
"nice"
by that you mean old and slow right?
Kids and their parents would approach us(photographers) and scare away the kingfishers were taking pics of
my gear is worth over 20K new but i got it for 8.9K
Slow and old is what I call a D3100
All my gear is def worth more
@grizzled nebula How do you have so much time to take photos all week?
might have cleaner pics than the G9 since it has a bigger sensor
i don't take photos everyday
So this I got for around 3.375€
My first birding cam is a d3200
i re edit old photos very often
no, but i mean while the week
or i finish editing stuff i haven't had time to edit
Ye but you can’t crop
?
I love the look of the images though
why not
during the week
14MP
feel that, the kids here like to throw rocks and trash at the bigger birds here as well (blue herons, swans)
I should get a 1.4x
Ye one is blurred
cute
This was in America

red is fire
Not bad
How do you know if that's real, and how much did it cost you?
love squirrels
Like woah
Wearing all neutral camo clothes and stuff. Carrying the bright red camera
180-600mm or 150-600mm?
gold vs dirt
who's dirt
I mean
2
2
yea
The tammy g1, g2 and sigma c 150-600
Yeah when the 180-600 arrived here the market got flooded with old f mount tele lens
I'm going back to where I saw the goldfinches to take another horrible picture
But it's not like you can use the 180-600 on the f mount
why
Me too. Last time I saw one in Europe though was like somewhen last year unfortunately
Most people are holding on waiting for the z lens replacement. Knew a guy using a tammy g2 on a z8
What a combo
Then sell it dirt cheap when the preorder arrives
I think thats a good thing. Now lots of biology students here owns a 150-600 and a 200-500 lens.
200-500 is apparently worse than the 150-600 c
Front heavy. But constant aperture.
the same reason you say why
i'm getting so confused
i think i'm gonna
take goldfinch pictures
idk if i should say
pictures
photos
anyways
Apparently it's a bit softer
Also focus sticking
Someone told me this here
Small
Waiting for parakeets
no pixel peepers allowed
is that a red winged blackbird
oof?
Yes
Its a corndog, take a bite out of it 😄
It is called a pond reed
i want to pet him
ew so low quality
looks fine to my eyes 😆
what is that bird
this is the kind of bird u need a hide for
european roller
looks blue
they look insane when they open their wings
was it hot out?
Looks like heat haze
yes
heat haze was crazy
some of the worst i've experienced
actually probably the worst
Detail
wdym
I said don't do that
Photo has pretty good detail, the birds just not super sharp. It was 600mm away and thats like a massive crop
That's why I did it lmao
This is too hard
yeah... bird photography isnt easymode
Yeah especially with parakeets
They don't land anywhere either
So it's only bif
Very Bad, I Can See the Ca so strong, very bad, shit photo
Jk
It actually looks very good if you don’t zoom
Oh my god, they are the most adorable birds I've ever seen. I literally saw about 10 coal tits.
yeah they're coal tits
I couldn't take a picture of them because they were in a tree that was difficult to photograph, with their backs to me, they were looking at me from behind in the sunlight and they were also escaping to other trees.
Wait you didn't zoom in far enough
zoom more it fixes it
Also the CA was very strong this shoot on the black birds. I think some heat haze got me good
What are you doing thats consistently providing clean backgrounds? Its really just sky back there?
DO NOT zoom into this one 😠
i have closer photos somewhere but I took like 5k photos and its a lot to scroll through
yes
also rolling shutter in this one ever so slightly warping wing edges. I was trying out pre-cap since Aarvs loves it

Oof
gonna buy sigma 100-400 tmrw
omg
I'm not really sure if 400mm is enough for birds, I'm sure it's not enough for me.
crop sensor so 640mm
I wish there was a really good lens that was 1-3000mm
But how does that work?
Does it maintain the same quality, or what?
pls explain me

it crops the frame like in the camera so you get bigger reach, quality gets hit a bit i think, and full frame handles iso better because the bigger sensor gets more light in
i feel like this crop just loses too much quality
i wanted to get closer but also didn't want them to move away
made the wrong decision
got closer for this shot
There is no 1mm
Widest There is is like 3mm
4mm
havent birded in 1 and a half weeks
There's 50-1000 if that appeases
Nah I think that’s apsc only
It also does 1500 with a switch flick
Fire
Maybe drop background highlights
Also looks noisy
indeed but why tf call it RF is it's RF-s lol
Idk if that's discord
not noisy for me
Damn good Job
probably discord then
Ok, 100mm
Go to Canon and get 200-800
Yes, that's enough, are they good lenses?
sorry
i have my lovebird cage
The RF1200mm F8 L IS USM super-telephoto, fixed focal length lens is the longest telephoto lens among Canon's EOS R System lineup†
i don't have the lovebird yet
@undone slate do you want a 1700mm f4?
Probably not
💀
yeah but most of the birds are close to me
And today, when I saw the coal tits for the first time, I can only say one thing.
Probably the most adorable bird I've ever seen. The sound too.
Is their sound cute?
You Can back up
Go back like 5-10m and you are still good
F4 btw
Only weighs 256kg too
Very light
So, what's the best Canon lens for wildlife photography? The closest thing to Nikon's 180-600mm.
There is no best
Best is subjective
Just saw a european roller pass over my house..
idk how you find them
i've never seen them
not even true, they're not in germany anymore
that's from wikipedia
👀
Idk...
why?
Idk why but they don't live in germany anymore
ah yeah that's also what the color means lmao
Bro ngl I can’t wait until after the holidays too
I wanna shoot birds on medium format so bad
I really shouldn’t mess up though
Bro medium format film so expensive
I live in one of the green areas 😍
but why
It’s amazing
it is?
whats amazing about it
.
so you like film because of the result you get?
And idk film has just its own look
Yeah
interesting
i grew up shooting film and weirdly prefer the clean digital look
i don't like the extra steps of digitizing the film and removing hairs/dust
and i honestly dont mind using film emulator like dehancer for people who want that look
Lol
dont get me wrong, i will happily shoot film on request, but its not my preference
The red circle is what the 2nd image is zoomed in on
no i'm flexing my focal length
Why are flexing ur local length
because why not
nice focal length, bro
This with tc?
1344mm
1.4 + 1.6x crop mode
Is it useable for birds?
Young great tit
Not in the uk
How do y ou know that
They often have a bit of yellow to them
Size mainly
Well, honestly, it does have a similar appearance.
the colors
not gonna lie
yh there's different type of coal tits
Are there different types?
i want to see the black crested coal tit
one of the coolest looking birds i've seen (not irl unfortunately)
India right
I should find them when I go visit family
omg
i didn't knew that exist
wait wait
No
that's the same species
as the coal tit
like bro look at this
dream bird
i want to go to asia and south america so bad
so many insane species
This is insane
is that real
My mum saw these when she went to kerala
I need to go dude
Going to Kenya which has cool as birds as well
yes
omg
it's called the oriental dwarf kingfisher

their colors change depending on the lighting too
but that's a coal tit
idk that's kinda strange
omg
liliac breasted rollers are insane too
It's their national bird
that's a normal bird
it's so cool
but it's more normal than others
I think
the pink robin is so damn cute
What a shot
man is that real
yes
i'm discovering
it's in australia
Everything cool is
Australia=crazy
Azure tit
toucans are insane too
That's not Australia but still
Go to the amazon
Azure Kingfishers are cool
Yes because that's affordable
how are these birds real wtf
I need to ask my dad if he has seen these
wadafuk
1/400th for more raindrop motion blur🔥🔥

Sick
yh i'm going to africa and asia idgaf
himalayan monal
Superb starlings are very common
Cool bird
Along with a couple of the paradise flycatchers
Those are also cool
how do you know the birds will perch there? do you just point your camera at that one spot and wait basically?
holy shit that tail
they always use the same perch
I was there on saturday already and saw one perch there, decided to sit infront of the spot and wait
well on the same day
Same for my kingfisher pic
Also on different days cuz theyre breeding there
Cant do the same with raptors or something tho
wtf
Sick bird
the bee eaters i found are gone 🙁
This is a painting nvm
still a sick bird
yea indian birds are fake istg
king vulture
That's such a funny thing
looks like a redwinged black bird almost
these tails are so cool
Yellow
lizard in its mouth?
Imagine missing focus on this
id just end it tbh
tail is 1.2m btw
meh
1 meter
they're like archeopteryx or smth like hta
@grizzled nebula
Insane photo
it is
what species is it
🦎
the fuck
what are my eyes seeing today
bird
lmao
necky birb
cute couple
always there to give me a chance to get a good photo of them
the one i got today wouldn't have been too bad if the heat haze wasn't so crazy
holy heat haze
dumbass hidden branch scared it away
i was withing 15m of it btw..
that's why cloudy photo is the best no heat haze
atleast i got a very nice kite shot
if i tell you for my shot you will cry

the only issue is low quality 😭
bro i was hidden in the tall grass and everything was going perfect until that shitty branch
that one branch know his assignment

i smashed it so next time it's not in the way anymore
if only super resolution was actually good
idk if i should laugh or cry
it was too high
this heat haze today bruh
idk
💀
bro's luck need to be studied
well i'm decently lucky cause 3/4 of the area i found were not accessible 2 years ago
also saw a fox today
ran away before i could get a pic of it
and still not sharing
lmaooo I spent the whole time sorting
editing stream when
There are a few nice ones
all unedited obv
Lool defo not today, 10:40pm and I need to get up pretty early
Also my pc not good enough for stream + editing LMAO
fire fire
this one wasnt denoised?
was it just slower ss
did u edit any yet
Nah
spent 1.5 hours sorting, did some other stuff, slept for an hour and then kept sorting on and off for 2 hours LMAO
how many did u take
around 2.1k in total
was very slow lmao
well I sorted through everything once in 1.5 hours, then another time to make sure I didnt miss anything
maybe its just my dxo settings but to me they look identical
they do
big rolling shutter
damnnnnn
oh my
that's heat
good quality too
is that a heavy crop?
Not really
Is this tuff or too basic
16mp still
that's pretty good
Don't like pics with fences or cages in them
eh fence is pretty annoying still
tbh
I want it to be intentional though
I wanna make it feel so that the bird is trapped yo
Yk
Yea I could've gotten lower
i would get down to eye level
second one is pretty nice
I did that too the one time I was in a zoo
I was genuinely gonna die walking in 100 degrees weather
this is heat
Thanks
bro... 🔥
🙏
gonna go out soon too hopefully can catch nearing the end of breeding season
too lazy to cull these warblers man
Todays dump. Was split between removing the greens or keeping them. Again open to any comments.
Also does anyone have any tips for handling such saturated backgrounds? Ive been leaning towards some 'moody' edits but idk I feel like changing things up to get a more muted/natural feel. YT vids etc would be helpfull c:
I personally like both, very dependant on the overall pic but usually I'll go with lighter/ more pastel colors
Who said I will do that loop
swallow experience
yeah... these were at 161mm, i found it really impossible to track while at 200-300 though
they were flying kinda close
just zooming by
spray and pray
all g, i got a lifer today so im happy
no one... just talking about my preferences
Feel like you’d love this
I think it’s a white headed chilling chipping sparrow. Isn’t a real
Bird but a classification of abnormalities of sparrows
Someone posted this to Facebook and my gf asked if I knew what it was.
cute
Lets go we have a nest here now! They keep flying back even tho we are here at the cottage. Not scared of us
Takin lil bro out for a shoot today
slight size difference
What I would be doing is make like a big “print” on actual photo paper, but like not printing more like developing or whatever it’s called
And ofc make one digital version but I want one nice photo to put in my room
That wasn’t digital
I think I should try to get a kingfisher with that
Long lens hood gang
Ever had an extendable lens hood lol?
That 1000mm lens I held, had one
nope
It’s kinda annoying actually
Idk if you can lock it, I did not try but if you hit anything it’s just goes back
That’s thing is all metal though
mirror or just some shit temu thing?
The lens is like 400g of glass and 1600g metal
Mirror
It’s older and it has pretty good quality only problem is that it’s made for black and white and has an insane orange tint if you shoot color
No though I used on an slr and looked through viewfinder
But like actually all you saw is bright or less bright orange lol
The color of the glass is insane
I won’t be able to get to the lens for two weeks tjough
I have to study for my last physics exam today
And tomorrow I’m going on holiday
It’s M42 so I will use it after the holidays on my Sony
It’s as heavy as my 200-600
good luck!
Thank you
No straps btw
crazy how heavy these shitty things are
i don't use a strap for my 600 anymore
well atm i don't
Only because it is made100% out of metal
but when i go back to camargue soon i'll def use it cause i need to walk a lot
Like except the optical elements
man idk why i want the R3 so bad now lol
Crazy
You have a lot of grip on it though right?
Because it’s not just a tube but also has this tripod leg
Which you can hold it on
The 1000mm doesn’t
yh i hold it by the lens foot
I meant that
I have to use the 1000mm on a tripod definitely
Otherwise I won’t be able to focus fast enough
What birds look good in black and white ?
I think a heron would be cool
I have to be around 5m away from it though
Not closer and max like 5-8m further away
Storks
Hm good point
They aren’t in my village quite often though
Well haven’t been there since a month
Idk where they were from but in two nests 20km from me the babies have hatched
So maybe they only go to closer food sources now
If these were the ones I saw
quick edit
one of the coolest birds for B&W imo
anything that has a mostly white body tbh
Idk I think a lot of colorful stuff can be good in black and white
The thing is Images look different if they are shot monochrome than if they are shot on color and converted monochrome
Wait no
With a color filter I mean
Which I already have with this orange color
Anyway I will get of discord in the next few mins and only open it tomorrow when I’m in the car to Sweden
So much stress incoming
No but my 28-300 lens has extendedable barrel. Only extended camera tool I've used. The lens is really good. Can shoot anything with it
Wao
color version?
that's cropped right?
And yet it still has a lot of quality
mostly due to it being a big bird
on a smaller bird it won't look too good
this is about the same level of crop
a lot of noise
i mean
not a lot
but i can see it
meant to send this
i decided not to denoise cause it keeps more detail
Nice
yeah
is that the max quality of the photo?
Never posted my most recent photos
Nearly all of these are pretty deep crops, only like 3 that aren’t
nah, this is basically the same amount of crop as the other black and white image i sent before
to show how it looks heavily cropped on a smaller bird
very nice!
Can’t wait for the 1.4x man, 300 gen isn’t enough reach for wild
Birds
z6 iii or z7
Mix of both
interesting
Idk which is which ngl 😭
oh so u did end up getting the 1.4x?
Is Canon cheaper for lenses?
not really
Not yet, waiting until I make a few large purchases to see what’s left
The Nikon tc is like $120 ish so I’ll be mint as long as I’m not poor afterwards
so why do u recommend me canon
Which I shouldn’t be, just can’t be too safe
idk if it was u or eric
anyway
Why do eric recommend me canon
and not nikon
Therefore, his opinion is not objective.
i'm getting confused
should I buy the r6 ii or the z6 iii
i mean for birding probably Z6III cause u can get the 180-600
it really depends tbh
So why didn't you buy the Z6 III instead of the R6 II?
yeah
because i prefer canon
yeah but why?
i prefer nikon and MAYBE i'm getting the r6 ii
nikon is quite difficult maybe
i'm not sure
Were you using the 100-500 lens?
i mean all 3 brand aren't difficult to get used to, canon is just easier
you mean where?
or asking me if i was using it
if u using it
yes i use it
well maybe i'm getting the z6 iii i'm not sureee
w birds
there's nothing thats hard to get used to
whichever is better value
or if you prefer certain lenses down the line if you get rich
Anyone here use auto iso? 7d/r6 mark 2 has really good auto iso. Working well in daytime for birding. Started using it today
