Let’s go

#

I swear thermals are amazing what you see with them

Like you go at night through a forest won’t see shit but the second you turn thermals on everything is full of animals

#

I saw elk for the first time in Germany through thermals

#

Also raccoons

@analog rivet Are there any significant changes from the Z6 III to the Z7?

dreamy tinsel
#

ive seen ppl having binoculars in their birding kit, does anyone here use them?

#

and how helpful are they?

acoustic hull
#

i have binoculars but i dont use them while photographing anything

narrow crag
#

I use binoculars all the time

#

not usually with my camera but they're much more convenient to carry around

analog rivet
#

Z6iii is vastly better

#

Haven’t really gave it a proper run yet

tough hull
#

Mostly what I heard from birders, they use like scopes for birding like binoculars but like mono so just one thing and you get crazy ranges on these and can attach cameras

#

Depends on which one you get though

#

Keep in mind this is just what someone else told me who is a birder

#

So don’t really know much it’s just what I heard

yeah

charred holly
#

or just switch to canon or nikon, R and Z are real letters lmao

tender galleon
#

should i use auto ISO instead of the one where it chooses shutter speed

#

it just becomes so noisy so fast with my camera

#

and it always chooses like iso 6400

charred holly
#

I never switch off auto iso for wildlife

#

I just pick shutter speed, aperture, and prey that there is enough light

green canyon

same

analog rivet

Kinda insane

grizzled nebula
glossy sage
#

The lighting in this photo is a bit awkward not sure where to start edits at, if I even should

#

The light is directly hitting the side of my subject you see pretty flat. So everything being evenly brightly lit is well rather correct

#

and no sharp angles for any shadow play

naive fiber
#

I think the composition is a bit awkward mainly

#

it's a tad too far to the left

glossy sage
#

You think so? Its rule of thirds'd

#

this is the full size I do have room to move it around

naive fiber
#

Oh yeah that's better

glossy sage
#

I guess I mess with color grading to try and create the visual separation between foreground and background? HmmQuag

naive fiber
#

You can use the rule of thirds but try push it more to the right

glossy sage
#

What do u think about this? Its a crazy crop but still seems sharp

But I also liked the color in the trees hm

# dreamy tinsel dawg what kind of school are you in 😭

Well it’s not really my school, rather the students of the school next to us, the type of school that’s way easier and usually the people who fought a lot in primary are the ones that didn’t learn and so they went there. And those are the danger for my camera

#

Mostly in the bus though

tender galleon
#

wait is there a mode for auto iso or do i just put manual and iso to auto

fast knoll
#

it does the exact same thing

tender galleon
#

is it av on canon

fast knoll
#

nah that's aperture

#

should be tv

#

wait no

#

wait yea

#

it's Tv lol final answer

#

i personally just use Fv mode and set aperture to wide open, ISO to auto, then i have the dial to adjust ss

tender galleon
#

is this shutter priority?

grizzled nebula
#

no

#

Shutter priority is TV

tender galleon
#

on my camera tv doesnt let set aperture

fast knoll
#

really? u can't jst set it to wide open?

#

then use Fv mode

tender galleon
#

i dont have fv lmao

fast knoll
#

can u just use M and set auto ISO?

#

i honestly dont know the diff between Fv and M

#

i could use my Fv mode exactly like manual if i wanted to

tender galleon
#

ill try M and auto iso

#

gotta set auto iso range so it doesnt always put 12800

fast knoll
#

my range goes up to 25600

#

but the photo is pretty shit if i have to get that high anyway so i try to drop shutter speed as much as possible

tender galleon
#

my camera cant handle iso that well

grizzled nebula
#

i can use 102000 iso

#

but it's shit

well depends how big the subject it

tough hull
#

Your camera constantly takes photos until you press the shutter and then it saves the last 1 sec before you pressed

#

So you don’t miss a shot

charred holly
#

JPEG isn't that bad for editing anyway

#

As long as you don't tweak a stupid amount of exposure

tough hull
#

That bird that suddenly flies infront of the sun/is in the direction of the sun with one half

charred holly
#

Yeah, birds in front of bright sky is always tough

tough hull

Raw all the way. JPEG only if you can 100% plan the shot or have enough tries lol

charred holly
#

I wouldn't ever pick JPEG over raw lmao

#

But JPEG got a bad rap from online snobs

#

I wish cameras could output AVIF or JPEG XL...

tough hull
#

And I shot JPEG back when I did not have Lightroom because I wasn’t gonna edit like man this don’t matter…

charred holly

This was a JPEG capture from the time I didn't know any better

#

But it’s not always like that

glossy sage
grizzled nebula

but it's in focus

grizzled nebula

grizzled nebula

#

I shoot with sun behind me though based on where the trees and stuff are at my house

grizzled nebula
#

sun doesn't set where i can see it

naive fiber
#

Golden hour makes me sit at 1k ish yeah

#

Unless there's a cloud

glossy sage

This was 8k ISO (and LR denoised)

naive fiber

That's pretty good for 8k

grizzled nebula
#

can tell

Updated the feeder yet again

grizzled nebula

grizzled nebula

undone slate
tough hull
# undone slate but wdym by precapture?

It takes pictures all the time but deletes them after one second and if you press the shutter button it takes pictures normally and saves 1 sec before you pressed the button

undone slate
tough hull
# undone slate But why delete them? What's the point of that?

Listen: you sit there and watch a bird, your camera points at it and you sit there for five minutes waiting for the bird to take off and fly away and during that time your camera takes like over 5k photos of the same thing over and over again but it deletes them after one second and if you press the shutter it saves this one second so you have the moment where it starts flying even if you are a little late. And the deleting happens so you don’t have a shit ton of photos

dreamy tinsel
undone slate
undone slate
#

why?

tough hull
#

Ok

undone slate
#

That doesn't happen on my camera

tough hull
undone slate
#

I understand that, but I don't understand why the camera is constantly taking photos if they're not to be saved...

tough hull
#

Nikon Z6 II and III have it but only jpeg

undone slate
tough hull
undone slate
#

But pre-capture is activated manually, right?

undone slate
#

That's useful if you're constantly pointing at the bird, but if you're not, you'd be taking pictures of the ground.

tough hull
undone slate
#

I have a question: could someone explain how to use exposure compensation? And how does it physically work on the camera? What does it do?

naive fiber
#

when you change exposure compensation you override the camera’s automatic metering to make photos brighter or darker

It can take weeks for birds to find and adapt to new things*

undone slate
#

It's the goldfinches' favorite plant.

undone slate
glossy sage
#

They arent used to it being there

undone slate
glossy sage
#

Most birds have garbage eyesight. It'll take time for them to recognize it, then check it out here and there and gauge how safe it is. Then if they like it start becoming regulars

#

Nature takes time its not stuff that happens in a few hours

#

Its also wild animals. Sometimes you can do everything right and still get no results

undone slate
glossy sage
#

Not the same way humans do

undone slate
#

Birds possess vastly superior vision compared to humans, with raptors (eagles, hawks) having 4–8 times higher visual acuity and the ability to see ultraviolet (UV) light. Birds have four types of color cones (tetrachromatic) vs. humans' three (trichromatic), allowing them to see a wider spectrum, faster motion, and more vivid colors

glossy sage
#

Majority of birds are really good at seeing contrast. Like a dark rat in bright colored grass the dark in the light they see the difference very well

#

Not individual shapes and details

sharp ether
glossy sage
#

Hmm I was reading on camouflaging for birding and it was saying wear low contrast colors to the environments and move low and still. Birds have a hard time detecting unique shapes and details and instead excel in contrast and movement

#

If you're dark green in a dark green forest it'd be very hard for them to recognize a human figure is what it was sayin

naive fiber
#

They just don't realise that there is a difference

#

The reason we can do that is because we are well smarter than birds

#

To slay the least

glossy sage

they come so close

#

pigeon was so close i couldnt focus

#

sadly i dont get to visit the city often

tough hull
#

In the city

tender galleon
#

cute ❤️

tough hull
#

Yeah thx

#

I’m still here fishing

#

After fishing I might just go and take some more pictures

tough hull
tender galleon
#

im gonna quickly edit some pigeons on my phone and see if i got anything

tough hull
#

Because my dumb ahh didn’t want to go f9

#

I shot at 6.3

tender galleon
#

well its good when you show it quickly to someone

#

they wont notice PepeLaugh

tough hull
tender galleon
#

show full

tough hull
tender galleon
#

so cutee

tough hull
#

Yeah

#

It’s my first time having this combo in the city and it’s already worth it

tender galleon
grizzled nebula
#

pic is kinda ass tbh

tender galleon
tough hull
#

I think I got them while mating

#

Looked more like drowning tbh

grizzled nebula
#

maybe 300

tough hull
#

Goddamn

#

That’s crazy

tender galleon
#

i once almost stepped over a curlews nest (there was 3 eggs) 😭

tough hull
#

I need to go there

tender galleon
tough hull
#

2.5m away from me

#

I could literally catch them rn with my bare hands

#

Meanwhile where I usually go I need like a super realistic ghillie suit to get in range for a 1200mm lens

# grizzled nebula

Man I was being trolled by laughing gulls yesterday. They would not move to a spot where I had a clear background

dusty fog
grizzled nebula
# dusty fog

sometimes a little bit of noise looks good and here i think it does tbh

#

idk why

dusty fog
#

i mean yeah personally i hate ultra clean images

#

just looks fake

#

if its not above like 4000 iso i'm not even touching it

#

when it's this low it basically looks like nice grain

grizzled nebula
#

i denoise basically all my pics except for when i want to do something that looks grainy

#

also i'd love to see bluejays

#

don't have them in france unfortunately

undone slate
undone slate
#

@grizzled nebula have you seen the upopa epops?

#

hoopoe

grizzled nebula
grizzled nebula
# undone slate how?

just wait to have no one behind or get a decent camera + lens for the bokeh to make them dissapear

dusty fog
naive fiber
#

Greenfinches honestly look like fed up old men

magic crown
#

Holy pose

#

(Low res preview)

dusty fog
#

30 fps is cheating

tacit gazelle
#

Back when I had the 75-300 KEKL

#

Not bad

grizzled nebula
tough hull
tacit gazelle
#

I think the shingles is my mistake a couple months ago I probably didn't raise shadows

#

But for holding a camera for like a week it's not that bad

tough hull
#

Not a bad photo

#

But ass photo

tacit gazelle
#

Ye

tough hull
#

Photo of ass

tacit gazelle
#

I take bird ass photo a lot

tough hull
tacit gazelle
#

The right one is shit

#

Quality wise

tough hull
tacit gazelle
#

That one was shot on iso 100

#

The camera focused on the branch instead the bird

#

And the light meter focused on the skyish so the butt was too dark

magic crown
#

Little owl !

#

Now i pray to have it on a perch

grizzled nebula
magic crown
naive fiber
grizzled nebula
#

finally got one

#

and it's a decent pic too

green canyon
grizzled nebula
#

pathetic

#

imagine not having 40 fps

grizzled nebula
green canyon
#

11 fps Focus

tough hull
grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

He just be shooting birds not even knowing what they are

#

I have never seen those

#

I wanna see them

grizzled nebula
tough hull
grizzled nebula
#

poor hoopoe

#

state of that pfp btw

tough hull
#

This guy is from turkey

grizzled nebula
#

turkey (bird) brain

grizzled nebula
tough hull
grizzled nebula
#

idk why i'd mention it anyway tbh

tough hull
grizzled nebula
#

idk if we can say the word i wanna say here

grizzled nebula
#

he literally kills birds for no reason

#

what's the hoopoes or house sparrow done to him

tough hull
#

Still stupid

#

But at least not fully wasted, just 99%

sharp ether
grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

Also this is no crop top it’s my phone as a comparison

#

Out of focus

#

But in the city you can really get hella close

#

Some guy was hand feeding a swan

grizzled nebula
#

uncropped

#

i could've touched it if i wanted to

#

this pigeon was quite close

sharp ether
grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

Where can you get that close

grizzled nebula
#

parc ornithologique du pont de gau

#

they're very used to humans

tough hull
#

Like closest I got was in the same city as today and it was on the other side of a 2-3m wide pond

grizzled nebula
#

i was just above 1.2m away

#

i was basically at the min focus distance of the 100-500 at 500mm

tough hull
#

Min focus for my 200-600 is 2.1m or so

grizzled nebula
#

100-500 goated

#

can do semi macro

sharp ether
tough hull
#

But for some reasons I can’t get close to birds then

tender galleon
tender galleon
tough hull
tender galleon
tough hull
#

Because so many people feed them, when they see a hand close enough they just take the food out of it

tender galleon
#

in my city its not allowed to feed them

grizzled nebula
#

Warra phone photography

tender galleon
#

still saw and old man feeding them today

tough hull
#

As soon as the pool on the other side opens there will be bored kids throwing away chips and bread and everything which they will eat

tough hull
tender galleon
#

a pond or a little river i think

tough hull
#

There if there’s too much like idk either the ducks poop or the bread whatever algae starts blooming

#

That’s why it’s illegal

tender galleon
#

yeah

#

they are pretty chill in my city

#

just chilling

tough hull
#

In my city it’s a river though it wouldn’t hurt if they made it illegal

tender galleon
#

minding their own business

grizzled nebula
#

in france i don't think it's illegal to feed them

#

if it is i can tell u rn it's not changing anything

magic crown
#

So happy i now have my spot for little owl

grizzled nebula
#

i see people feeding every bird

grizzled nebula
#

cause if there's little owls there i wanna get pics

tender galleon
#

saw first common kestrel today

grizzled nebula
magic crown
magic crown
#

But i can give you something
You can found the spot on Ebird

grizzled nebula
magic crown
#

Nope

#

It's in the main plateau

#

In this area

tough hull
#

Bruh

#

I’m going to the Ebro delta this year

#

And I thought man there’s gonna be a lotta birds

#

But hell no

#

That’s nothing

#

My closest single hotspot has 200

grizzled nebula
#

y'a la crau pres de hyeres aussi mdr

#

fuck that then

magic crown
tough hull
#

Australia?

#

Weird French

grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

I don’t like French

grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

Language so complicated

grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

You write something lik idk car and pronounce it cow

grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

Ofc not with the word car

#

But you pronounce everything differently from what you write

#

That’s why I love German (except counting system)

#

Lmao since I started to speak English I lost my ability to count in German

grizzled nebula
#

why is camargue such a fucking cheat code

#

it's literally less than 30 mins away from me

tough hull
grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

K

grizzled nebula
#

wish it was by bike

tough hull
#

How long by bike?

grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

lol

#

Ask the mighty Google Maps

magic crown
#

I spawn in the best place

tough hull
#

My bird hotspot at the Danube is like 25km, I do that in an hour lol

grizzled nebula
#

i am going to cavaliere soon to try and find that eagle owl

tough hull
#

I have never seen an owl lol

grizzled nebula
#

i have but not wild

tough hull
#

I saw them at a zoo a couple of years ago

grizzled nebula
split path
tough hull
#

I don’t take pics of locked up animals 🙂

#

Hell yeah imma he at least 20lifers in Spain this year

#

And I’m going to Stockholm in a month

#

A bunch new lifers there

grizzled nebula
#

Well there’s 2 that are handicapped

#

You’re not allowed to get too close but luckily there’s a place where you can get some nice pics like these

naive fiber
dusty fog
#

the sun was out if that's what you mean

naive fiber
#

Yeah I just wanted to word differently for some reason

undone slate
dusty fog
#

european robins are so much cuter than american ones man

#

tough hull
spring vault
#

#

usa has cardinals too those r way cooler

green canyon
green canyon
spring vault
#

theyre not colorful but theyre big and a cool shape

green canyon
#

spring vault
#

green canyon
#

im really excited to see what kind of pictures i can get of kingfishers with the a6700

#

i just need a camo blanket

grizzled nebula
#

(not my pic)

spring vault
#

belted kingfisher calls sound like theyre laughing at you as they fly away

grizzled nebula
#

i'd like to see one

green canyon
spring vault
#

#

they taunt me so

grizzled nebula
spring vault
#

doesn't have a cool hairdo

dusty fog
#

does europe have barn swallows

grizzled nebula
#

dusty fog
#

tough hull
spring vault
#

grizzled nebula
green canyon
#

i was about to say aarvs has tons of pictures of them

grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

Yo @green canyon you got anything with your a6700 yet?

green canyon
spring vault
#

pipitshi is a good name

tough hull
spring vault
#

I love tits

green canyon
grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

I got them once close with my 600mm and that was directly above

green canyon
tough hull
#

So I didn’t get a frontal shot

grizzled nebula
tough hull
#

I got like barely their beak

grizzled nebula
#

silly birds

green canyon
tough hull
#

And 70% of the bird was just belly

#

Visible

undone slate
green canyon
# green canyon

undone slate
