on your camera it won't be easy

undone slate
#

what do you call expensive?

#

I don't know whether to spend time editing the photos or just wait until I get the Z6 III when I buy it.

left brook
#

i think ive asked before but this wasnt a hide or anything right

left brook
grizzled nebula
# undone slate what do you call expensive?

well i use 2 lenses for wildlife, one normally costs 7K euros but i got it for 3.9K and the other over costs 2K but even if you have gear like this it won't instantly improve your photos

left brook
#

damn

left brook
#

aarvs im gonna get the 600/4 tc to 1-up you someday

undone slate
#

Is your lens better, or the Nikon Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR?

left brook
#

his is a 600mm f4, so it doesnt zoom from 180mm-599mm, but its much sharper (IS II version), and wider aperture at f4

naive fiber
#

Yes

undone slate
naive fiber
#

Uhh I can't remember

#

It'll be possible

grizzled nebula

and dont have the dog near the feeder lol

undone slate

Depends on the kind of contest and the level in there, but I'd say probably not

What is the best Nikon Z-mount lens?

grizzled nebula

lotta lenses act diff near min focus distance and farther away

grizzled nebula
#

this is at min focus distance that i took these pictures

undone slate
#

But is the difference in quality noticeable?

#

@grizzled nebula

grizzled nebula
wide flint
#

Could also argue for the 400 f2.8 with built in tc

grizzled nebula
#

how the fuck do you compete with this

undone slate
#

with the z6 III + 180-600mm

undone slate
#

But they'll be worse than yours in quality.

grizzled nebula
#

well that's expected really

#

not the same caliber of lens

undone slate
#

But is your lens zoom or fixed?

grizzled nebula
#

it doesn't zoom

#

that's why i also have a 100-500 lens

green canyon
grizzled nebula
#

my 600 is almost double the weight of the 180-600 KEKL

naive fiber
#

How on earth was this even taken

undone slate
# grizzled nebula fixed

The problem with that is that you have to be at a good distance from the bird because if it's too close and you want to take a good picture, you can't.

naive fiber
#

Yeah let me put my lens in this corpse

undone slate
#

I think.

grizzled nebula
#

you're making my head hurt

🙁

naive fiber
#

I do want me a 500 f4

undone slate
#

idk

naive fiber
#

They aren't too much anymore for f mounts

grizzled nebula
#

this is the difference between a 600 F/4 prime and a 180-600

#

the difference will not be as noticable on birds but it will still be there

left brook
#

corner or center?

left brook
grizzled nebula
#

(mine is sharper than that nikon wide open TuxPepe )

#

this is center frame

grizzled nebula
#

and that's killian's test

#

600 is II is razor sharp at F/4 from corner to corner TuxPepe

#

extremely small improvement between F/4 and F/8 at the corner

#

you won't notice it in normal shooting

grizzled nebula
left brook
#

i can just like

#

tc tho

naive fiber
grizzled nebula
naive fiber
#

I thought it was centre and cropped

grizzled nebula
#

i believe the 600 IS II is the sharpest 600 IS II with the nikon 600 FL ED VR

#

600 IS II has slightly better sharpness with TC but FL ED VR better CA Control

#

500/4 E has even crazier mtf charts tho

#

idk how much i trust

@tacit gazelle here

#

I'm going to try using darktable, but it's still confusing for me.

tacit gazelle
#

Ah ok

#

There are lots of tutorials on YouTube to help

#

If you want something simple to start I'd recommend snapseed/Lightroom mobile

undone slate
#

But what should I edit in the photo?

undone slate
grizzled nebula
undone slate

well idk, i don't use phone to take photos

grizzled nebula

But it’s been waterdamaged multiple times, cameras badly replaced by repair shop aswell

grizzled nebula
tacit gazelle
undone slate
#

If I increase the saturation it will increase the saturation of the entire photo

tacit gazelle
#

You have to make a mask

undone slate
#

wdym by that?

tacit gazelle
#

It's like a selected layer

#

Just start with snapseed and learn that first

undone slate
#

can i do that on darktable?

tacit gazelle
#

Yes

#

Look up a YouTube tutorial

Thanks!

tacit gazelle
#

The other ones would be awesome too if you learned masking

undone slate
#

The photos may be okay, but the camera and the quality are bad.

tacit gazelle
#

It's actually kinda impressive for a point and shoot without any editing

#

Like

undone slate

Although when I buy the Z6 III the difference will be enormous

there's griffon, bearded, egyptian, Cinereous vultures, golden, bonelli's, booted, short toed eagles, peregrine falcons and a lot more in the pyrenees

and they're all pretty common there

grizzled nebula
#

i really want to go there in the near future

#

annyoing thing is that most of the best places are 9h from where i live

grizzled nebula
#

time for me to go out

#

ik where i'm going to go today and tomorrow already

unborn frost
#

Had another go at these; need to not make things pop too much or end up making them look unnatural. I noticed most of it came from knowing how much to lift shadows and contrast. The original images were quite dark so it was difficult judge how much brighter i can go while still making it seem like the subject are in shadow

naive fiber
#

Maybe a tad cold

#

Can't tell too much right now

unborn frost
# naive fiber Hmm is the image leading a tad pink?

I adjusted the temp to be a bit cold to balance some of the colours, making it warmer was saturating the image and making it harder to manage. I think ill have to revisit some videos on how to deal with colour cast and adjusting temperature sliders. Atm i just do it by eye and what feels right

unborn frost
# naive fiber What are you using for it?

The images? Nothing. Just getting into photography as a hobby. Dont plan on posting to any socials. Its just nice to know good techniques to edit as i have the tools for it

One question: would you recommend going to a place where there are ducks to take pictures of them? I'm asking because of the camera I have.

astral saffron
#

Yes you have to go to where ducks live to photograph them

undone slate
#

?

shut hazel
#

hmm im free today and the ebird thing says theres actually swallows here

#

last time i went it said like 14% frequency

#

now its nearing 80

#

im free today so i might have to go

shut hazel
#

idk i was sscrolling around and i clicked on this local spot and it shows the species that are there and some kind of bar carts

#

charts

#

i would assume theres atleast one swallow there if its 78% frequency

undone slate
#

nice

undone slate
#

Yes, but I'm asking if you recommend going there to take pictures because the camera I have isn't that great.

fast knoll
#

u can get nice photos with a bridge camera

#

it's more about the photographer's ability

undone slate
fast knoll
#

sure why not

#

get a nice angle

undone slate
#

yap

fast knoll
#

u dont have to have the highest quality photo

#

if u get a nice angle and nice lighting it will still look good

#

it's not all about the camera

undone slate
#

yes

fast knoll
#

if i gave u my setup rn im not sure u would be able to get much better photos than what u have rn

undone slate
#

Which image quality is better, and which has a P1100 at maximum zoom 3000mm and my camera at maximum zoom 720mm?

astral saffron
#

You don’t need the latest and greatest gear to capture a mood and create art

undone slate
fast knoll
#

slightly better in terms of image quality maybe

#

but if ur angle is wrong and ur background is ugly that's not gonna change

undone slate
fast knoll
#

instead of typing here complaining about your camera how bout u go outside and practice getting good compositions

shut hazel
#

idk if this is a good example but i kinda got limited by zoom and i think the shot turned out fine in the end?

#

idk tho

fast knoll
#

i like it

#

also 720mm is no joke

#

i only have 500

undone slate
#

For example, if I had taken this photo with my camera, the sensor probably wouldn't have captured the details and focus as well; the difference is actually immense.

fast knoll
#

720 shouldnt limit u at all

shut hazel
#

i have 400 zoom

fast knoll
shut hazel
#

ah

#

720 is really good

undone slate
#

For those who own a fixed lens for birds, for example a 600mm, is there a significant difference in quality between a 180-600mm lens and a 180-600mm lens? Is it worth it?

fast knoll
#

i assume u mean zoom vs prime?

shut hazel
#

huh

undone slate
fast knoll
#

it depends on which lenses youre comparing

shut hazel
#

oh

fast knoll
#

for example 180-600 is definitely softer compared to a prime

#

but the price diff is also like 12k

#

canon's 100-500 which is what i have is almost as sharp as a prime lens

#

the downside is the aperture is a lot slower

wide flint
#

Wait this guy is still complaining about his gear and coping? He's been here for like 2 days

fast knoll
#

indeed

undone slate
#

But I saw photos taken with a Z6 III and a 180-600mm lens, and the quality is very good; it's difficult to see any flaws.

undone slate
fast knoll
#

it's still a great setup

shut hazel
#

its good but if you want those very crispy details then a prime comes in handy

fast knoll
#

just not top of the line

undone slate
fast knoll
#

well to each their own

shut hazel
#

it all depends on the person

fast knoll
#

some ppl want to print their photos

shut hazel
#

ye

fast knoll
#

some ppl use their gear for a living

undone slate
undone slate
wide flint
# undone slate umm, yes?

Yeah, quality of the camera really isn't THAT important. Good photographers can still take AMAZING pictures with shit gear, 95% is just skill and knowledge. Gear just makes your hitrate a bit higher and sometimes easier to hit shots in certain situations

fast knoll
#

this is the power of the 100-500

undone slate
#

wow

#

I think I already asked you, but what lens and camera did you use?

fast knoll
#

r5 100-500

undone slate
#

oh ok

#

But if a lens is fixed at 600mm for example, if you have a bird nearby you can't take a picture of it.

How are you able to write here and at the same time have the bird get so close to you?

grizzled nebula
#

Can you smell what the rock is cooking

grizzled nebula
undone slate

But how close is it?

But I think you used a fixed lens, or do you have more?

I'll send more photos tomorrow; there are many I took, I still have to select them.

undone slate
undone slate
#

Why isn't the background so blurred?

green canyon
grizzled nebula
#

you will need to get super close to the subject to get any kind of blur

undone slate
#

I already managed to get photos of birds with the background perfectly blurred, the problem is that the background was somewhat close.

undone slate

#

I got a nice photo just a few days ago

#

I saw them for the first time ever in this area, (first time ever in general was 20km away in school) and then sat with my boots sunken in the mud, on a breaking branch in a swamp so I can get pictures of it landing on a branch in the water

#

But unfortunately after 30mins of waiting I realized there k was too much grass so the images where unsharp so I threw a stick sideways to knock the 4 grass things down and then I had to wait another 30mins for a wagtail to land

#

My spot is pretty horrible though because you can easily just sink in the mud as if it were ice that you’re breaking through

#

It’s always a bit scary but I’m getting used to it luckily

can you explain me?

Well, I have to go to sleep, I'll read that tomorrow.

tacit gazelle
#

The higher the f stop (1.8), the more light it allows in and also allows for the background to have more bokeh (blurry)

tough hull
#

Your wildlife spots

#

Are crazy

grizzled nebula
#

hmm i live far away from them

#

3h by car from camargue

#

6h if i take the train + bus

#

i have a mini camargue but there's basically nothing other than 1 black swan

#

that's 30 mins away by car and 1h by bus

#

gorges du verdon is also about 1h20-2h away

#

mercantour 3h

tough hull
#

You have kingfisher spots

grizzled nebula

grizzled nebula

atleast i managed to get an incredible photo before they left ig

tough hull

I couldn’t see my kingfishers for 5 months but yesterday I saw them for the first time since then

grizzled nebula
#

man look at the photo potential at the mercantour

tough hull

#

I have no good spots really

The better spots are 21km away

i got shushed by some tourists at the gorges du verdon because she was filming a video 💀

#

she was literally screaming

#

dumbass biatch

#

this is about 40 mins by car from where i live

tough hull
#

We have a mountain that’s like the most touristy place in the area and like every year I see like two helicopters landing there because someone was too stupid to climb again and got himself in a near death encounter

#

Like bro

#

I take the longer way with my 2.5kg camera setup

grizzled nebula

this is quite cool too

tough hull
grizzled nebula

dark minnow
#

This was last week a year ago

grizzled nebula

And it looks cool but is actually shit that our snow here is just like mushy and not powdery so it’s always melting

#

And it melts on your cam when it snows

dark minnow
tough hull
#

On your shoes everywhere

grizzled nebula
dark minnow
tough hull
#

Literally when I was in the mountains with like -10 in the snow it was more comfortable than 0 degrees in Germany

tough hull

Because the powder snow doesn’t stick to my shoes

grizzled nebula

being able to drive anywhere when i want is gonna be life changing

tough hull

So over 6 years ago

dark minnow
#

march 22nd this year

tough hull
#

I remember our thermometer we had outside was almost down to -20

#

But only at night

grizzled nebula
#

coldest i've ever experienced here is probably -3°c at night

tough hull
#

Same day we got +5

dark minnow
grizzled nebula
#

don't remember the temp when we got snow here cause iirc that was over 11 years ago

tough hull
grizzled nebula
#

in the day the coldest i remember experiencing is 3°C

grizzled nebula
#

when i went to the ski it went down to -15°C skullpls

tough hull

We would get similar weather if we had no gulf stream
