what do you call expensive?
I don't know whether to spend time editing the photos or just wait until I get the Z6 III when I buy it.
i think ive asked before but this wasnt a hide or anything right
id honestly wait, but hang around here and ask lots of questions and learn in the meantime
well i use 2 lenses for wildlife, one normally costs 7K euros but i got it for 3.9K and the other over costs 2K but even if you have gear like this it won't instantly improve your photos
nope
damn
7k???
aarvs im gonna get the 600/4 tc to 1-up you someday
Is your lens better, or the Nikon Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR?
his is a 600mm f4, so it doesnt zoom from 180mm-599mm, but its much sharper (IS II version), and wider aperture at f4
Yes
how
someone
it's much better but the 180-600 has the advantage of being able to zoom
probably i guess
just leave the feeder they'll find it
and dont have the dog near the feeder lol
I have a feeder where my dog is, but it's high up, and the plants are too.
yeah but birds arent gonna go to a feeder with a dog nearby
I was this close to it
when they get used to it if
Depends on the kind of contest and the level in there, but I'd say probably not
i actually managed to get closer than i was in that image
wow
In what way is it better?
it's much sharper and i don't need to stop down the aperture to get it to max sharpness, lets more light in and has better background separation
its the finnish nature photo of the year, i submit those into the teens category
What is the best Nikon Z-mount lens?
no sharpness improvement between F/4 and F/8
in the teen category you could do pretty decent, in the adult category i don't think those would do too well cause those categories are just absolutely insane
lotta lenses act diff near min focus distance and farther away
this is at min focus distance that i took these pictures
Yes
600 f4 with built in tc
Could also argue for the 400 f2.8 with built in tc
how the fuck do you compete with this
then my photos won't be of excellent quality
with the z6 III + 180-600mm
But is your lens zoom or fixed?
fixed
it doesn't zoom
that's why i also have a 100-500 lens
its also not the weight of a car
my 600 is almost double the weight of the 180-600
You don't bro 😭
How on earth was this even taken
The problem with that is that you have to be at a good distance from the bird because if it's too close and you want to take a good picture, you can't.
Yeah let me put my lens in this corpse
I think.
you're making my head hurt
🙁
I do want me a 500 f4
idk
They aren't too much anymore for f mounts
this is the difference between a 600 F/4 prime and a 180-600
the difference will not be as noticable on birds but it will still be there
corner or center?
Are these cropped?
500/4E probably my next lens
no, just zoomed into
and that's killian's test
600 is II is razor sharp at F/4 from corner to corner
extremely small improvement between F/4 and F/8 at the corner
you won't notice it in normal shooting
aarvs do i get 500/4E or a 600/4
i mean depends if you want a lighter lens or more reach
Oh right
icl i'd just ask some nikon users
I thought it was centre and cropped
i believe the 600 IS II is the sharpest 600 IS II with the nikon 600 FL ED VR
600 IS II has slightly better sharpness with TC but FL ED VR better CA Control
hmm
500/4 E has even crazier mtf charts tho
idk how much i trust
i would've gotten 500 F/4 ngl if it wasn't over 2K more expensive than the 600 F/4
Thats nice
Nice colors
birds almost always sit in this tree in my garden, finally it has some leaves on it
Do u think my phones cam is dead?
this guy let me within like 2m
me neither i have to add it
@tacit gazelle here
I'm going to try using darktable, but it's still confusing for me.
Ah ok
There are lots of tutorials on YouTube to help
If you want something simple to start I'd recommend snapseed/Lightroom mobile
i was using GIMP but it's not good
But what should I edit in the photo?
what phone do u have
S21 ultra
well idk, i don't use phone to take photos
But it’s been waterdamaged multiple times, cameras badly replaced by repair shop aswell
I don’t either
Make the bird eye/head stand out more
how?
If I increase the saturation it will increase the saturation of the entire photo
You have to make a mask
wdym by that?
can i do that on darktable?
ok, i will
rainy birds
That third one is nice
Thanks!
The other ones would be awesome too if you learned masking
mmm yes, i would learn masking
The photos may be okay, but the camera and the quality are bad.
yep
Although when I buy the Z6 III the difference will be enormous
and 180-600mm
You have money saved up?
yes
Nice
used my 100-500 properly for the first time in ages
I already made the mask, but I don't know how to select it to edit it. 😭
Have you tried looking up a YouTube video?
not yet
Lmao whats happening there
dude what is that
Ah yes, the Talking Head masking technique...
For the feeder people here
Yall store feed in the bags or a bin? Trying to eyeball what size bin I want
I'm thinking 20gal (75 liter)
i dont burn through food quick enough for that
I see. I wanna start mixing my own seed mix to prioritize not parking lot birbs (crows and grackles) that come with pre-mixed bags so I'd have to get bags of seeds and nuts at once and mix em all together
i like tits and robins the most so i have a big bag of deshelled sunflower hearts, some peanuts and a little bucket of dried larvae
Oh lord is this what Darktable makes you do for masks
#1041487027255914566 message
That’s actually ass
I mean doesnt everyone like tits

not everyone
Thoughts on these? lighting was all over the place on the day. tried to get eye level or just below but it ended up being quite difficult to edit. didnt know which way to go or how to frame things
bit high contrast overall
some are too saturated, especially in the blues and yellows
the first one kinda has a weird crop but it has potential
Probably water
Condensation in the lens or between the back glass and lens
guess the focal length
11mm
24
Darn
how's the 1dx mark ii
isnt that the flagship dslr
how does the autofocus work is there auto tracking like the mirrorless subject detection?
i love it, only thing stopping me from carrying it around everywhere is its size and weight
i still prefer it over my r8 for sports, genuinely works better in every way in the thing it's meant to do
there technically is, but it's not too good
this is sick im always scared to shoot into the sun lol
makes sense
Same
is ts the darktable experience
glue
Oh very botched then
Did you hurt yourself or something
Ik its dead rn but its repairable
Idk if its worth it tho
I've already seen tutorials on how to use the Darktable mask, but in this photo the detail of the face is beyond repair, I think.
What is the bird in the first photo?
Is it all lenses
von schenck's bittern
pretty much yh
the 108mp one works ok but it's still not as good as before
@grizzled nebula
Where did you see all the vultures
Because I’m also going to the Pyrenees this year
In August
gorges du verdon
not in the pyrenees
but you'll see a lot more birds in the pyrenees anyway
Ok
there's griffon, bearded, egyptian, Cinereous vultures, golden, bonelli's, booted, short toed eagles, peregrine falcons and a lot more in the pyrenees
and they're all pretty common there
Crazy, thanks a lot
i really want to go there in the near future
annyoing thing is that most of the best places are 9h from where i live
Had another go at these; need to not make things pop too much or end up making them look unnatural. I noticed most of it came from knowing how much to lift shadows and contrast. The original images were quite dark so it was difficult judge how much brighter i can go while still making it seem like the subject are in shadow
Hmm is the image leading a tad pink?
Maybe a tad cold
Can't tell too much right now
I adjusted the temp to be a bit cold to balance some of the colours, making it warmer was saturating the image and making it harder to manage. I think ill have to revisit some videos on how to deal with colour cast and adjusting temperature sliders. Atm i just do it by eye and what feels right
What are you using for it?
The images? Nothing. Just getting into photography as a hobby. Dont plan on posting to any socials. Its just nice to know good techniques to edit as i have the tools for it
Oh I meant for editing sorry
Ah my bad. I use lightroom classic
gonna try going there tomorrow
either that or a birding hotspot
depends
likely to see a kingfisher or something
Oh it can do it for you
Dont jinx it
i've seen them on that river before
well i saw the 2 only ones i've ever seen there
Yet to see a kingfisher
How many times have you been lmao
well i saw them pretty much every day for 3 months
Oh wow
giga crop but I kinda like it
yup
Also, not a bird but I spotted this dude too
Damn thats shitting cool lmao
Yeah, this place has more boars than birds lol
Maybe they were all scared off lmao
There has been a massive forest fire last summer, so wildlife got very sparse
Where abouts is this?
So bad it has its own Wikipedia page
Oh yeah that's pretty shit
It was bound to happen, three years of uninterruped drought...
One question: would you recommend going to a place where there are ducks to take pictures of them? I'm asking because of the camera I have.
Yes you have to go to where ducks live to photograph them
Yes, but I'm asking if you recommend going there to take pictures because the camera I have isn't that great.
?
hmm im free today and the ebird thing says theres actually swallows here
last time i went it said like 14% frequency
now its nearing 80
im free today so i might have to go
ebird shows that?
idk i was sscrolling around and i clicked on this local spot and it shows the species that are there and some kind of bar carts
charts
i would assume theres atleast one swallow there if its 78% frequency
nice
Yes, but I'm asking if you recommend going there to take pictures because the camera I have isn't that great.
u can get nice photos with a bridge camera
it's more about the photographer's ability
with my camera?
yap
u dont have to have the highest quality photo
if u get a nice angle and nice lighting it will still look good
it's not all about the camera
yes
if i gave u my setup rn im not sure u would be able to get much better photos than what u have rn
Which image quality is better, and which has a P1100 at maximum zoom 3000mm and my camera at maximum zoom 720mm?
You don’t need the latest and greatest gear to capture a mood and create art
probably i could get better phtots
slightly better in terms of image quality maybe
but if ur angle is wrong and ur background is ugly that's not gonna change
I know, but there's a reason why almost everyone who can afford it buys a good camera.
instead of typing here complaining about your camera how bout u go outside and practice getting good compositions
it's night right now 😭
idk if this is a good example but i kinda got limited by zoom and i think the shot turned out fine in the end?
idk tho
For example, if I had taken this photo with my camera, the sensor probably wouldn't have captured the details and focus as well; the difference is actually immense.
720 shouldnt limit u at all
i have 400 zoom
yea im talking to the other guy cause he asking about his 720mm
For those who own a fixed lens for birds, for example a 600mm, is there a significant difference in quality between a 180-600mm lens and a 180-600mm lens? Is it worth it?
i assume u mean zoom vs prime?
huh
yes
it depends on which lenses youre comparing
oh
for example 180-600 is definitely softer compared to a prime
but the price diff is also like 12k
canon's 100-500 which is what i have is almost as sharp as a prime lens
the downside is the aperture is a lot slower
Wait this guy is still complaining about his gear and coping? He's been here for like 2 days
indeed
But I saw photos taken with a Z6 III and a 180-600mm lens, and the quality is very good; it's difficult to see any flaws.
umm, yes?
the 180-600 isnt a bad lens
i know
yea but compared to a prime you can tell
it's still a great setup
its good but if you want those very crispy details then a prime comes in handy
just not top of the line
I don't know if it's worth spending so much for better quality; I don't think there's that much difference anyway.
well to each their own
it all depends on the person
some ppl want to print their photos
ye
some ppl use their gear for a living
yes
yes
Yeah, quality of the camera really isn't THAT important. Good photographers can still take AMAZING pictures with shit gear, 95% is just skill and knowledge. Gear just makes your hitrate a bit higher and sometimes easier to hit shots in certain situations
r5 100-500
oh ok
But if a lens is fixed at 600mm for example, if you have a bird nearby you can't take a picture of it.
yum
what
that is quite te birb
yea but that rarely happens
usually the birds are far
there r certain situations where zoom does come in handy
but usually youre at the long end of ur lens anyway
yes
i have a few examples of when zoom was actually handy
these were at 300mm
basically uncropped
37
these birds have 10 foot wingspan
thats a pretty big bird
Birds in flight without a zoom
largest bird in north america
what's that?
it's a tag
there's only 600 left
they were brought back by a conservation program
from a population of 22
colossal biosciences
You don’t need crazy zooms, getting close it more important. Your 720mm is more than enough
Taken at 20mm: #🦀・creatures message
Taken at 40mm: #🦀・creatures message
Was the first one a camera trap?
No I only shoot handheld
wow
50mm bird (it hit its head on a window and got stunned for a bit)
you also dont always need the closeups imo
😭
But how did you take that picture? From a window or did it just happen?
We heard a bang at the window and a friend put it on a table
The best wildlife photographs are photos of landscapes with animals in them
i really wana try that someday
I can see the reflection of the house in the bird's eye
o
Do what u wanna do
I could, so lend me your setup pls
I got mega scrolled up by discord nice
I want a good flying photo but my AF aint havin it
r8 af is great idk what ur on about
yeah
these guys showed up as well
pretty decent then
The body is fine @fast knoll
do u just have an ahh lens
Its just an old EF lens
which one lol
The page is Tamron's lens product [SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 (Model A022)]. Its a pretty good lens, just doesn't have that native RF autofocus speed + I have to adapt to it
Going from stationary birb -> flying it doesn't refocus fast enough
just shoot at 24mm

I made a new friend here and he told me some nice violet green swallow spots
gonna have to check em out
gonna have to check em out
Duck
lowk not the worst?
They’re like little bullets
yeah it was wild
i never tried getting photos before
today was interesting
im happy with the shot above though atleast i didnt come out with nothing
Think it’s an ideal shot for them too, getting closer is like impossible to track
Shows the colours too
damn that's nice
thanks
Can't wait to go check out this part of the river
alpine swift
wish it was facing the other direction
there were loads there but they were just too fast i couldn't find them in the evf
one almost hit me at full speed
yea tracking these guys is a skill
Zamn bru
is he banded
he's ringed
Such cuteness
fluffy
Chickadee
😭
I don't know if it's a coincidence many times or if it's something normal.
I still don't understand how birds of prey get so close to you.
its a willow tit i think
patience
yep
But even with patience, in my area it is very, very rare for kites and buzzards to come near me.
But for photographing birds on a clear day, I think it's best during sunrise and sunset.
otherwise the sun creates very harsh shadows
bad photo
I can't tell I believe it's a black cap chickadee
Actually I have no clue
i from that angle it might look like a chickadee but i think theres no chickadees in my area
looks like a marsh tit
They look pretty similar though
So yeah probably yours
God we are useless at this
Merlin bird id we go
they're too similar lol
They are a bit skinnier than this I believe
It came up with all 3 of our answers
are you ok with me sending the picture in another server to try and get the it identified?
actually i could invite u directly
if u want
do u want me to invite u to this birding server so u can get it identified or want me to send it there myself?
or do u not care lol
This isn't my photo lmao
I would like an invite sure
But ask @tender galleon not me
sent u friend request so i can send it to u
sure
yeah willow more fluffy
where did u take the picture
in my backyard
i meant which country 😅
oh yh that's most likely a willow then
cause i know antti takes quite a few willow tit pictures too (he's also finnish)
and they're also very common there
i should've asked that directly, would've saved a lot of time
The closest thing we have in the UK I believe is to be a long tailed tit looks wise
Never seen one though
I think birds like those would look the best if it were to snow photography wise
❤️
Extremely nice bird
Wow Asian koels are loud
i want to be there
Blorbedededede
@grizzled nebula my phone cameras went to the pearly gates today to meet yours for some reason
patience and trying alot
today i waited 1.5h for a 30s appearance
wow
other days you can wait 2h js for the bird to not even show
so like

But do you take the photos in the morning and afternoon, or also at midday? I ask because the sun doesn't create much contrast at midday.?
usually sunrise till late morning
after like 11am heatwaves sucks
depends where are you from
yeah i live at the equator
what country?
singapore
wow
mid day sun can be ok if its cloudy
mornings/evenings are better for colour
I'm in Spain, you're on the other side of the world
yes
But if you want to take a picture of a bird flying, the sky looks bad.
i generally dislike sky backgrounds unless its clear skies
then you can maybe save the background
Do you have any pictures of a cassowary?
I'm going to a zoo this year where there's a cassowary, but do you think you can take good photos at a zoo?
i know
but you can def get good shots in a zoo dpeneidng on the environment the animal is in
singapore has the mandai bird paradise
I know, but you can take close-up photos with good detail, even if the fence isn't very noticeable.
Is it a birds of paradise zoo or what?
thats what i dislike tbh, the cage
its like a bird park
you can google it
Have you ever seen a bird of paradise at the zoo?
there's some in a zoo very close to me
And have you ever been there?
I went to the largest bird zoo in Spain last year, but I didn't have a camera back then.
and there was a cassowary
i dont get whats a bird of paradise
but theres paradise flycatcher
not yet
wdym
singapore is not australia
oh you meant that
but no, idts
i dont recall seeing that
why
I searched on Google and it does have Raggiana bird of paradise
basically my 2 options to go to the river are take a long fast dangerous road or take a small fast dangerous road but longer distance
idts
Why is it dangerous?
well, if both are fast
probably it's better to go with a bike
Need to go on 90kmph roads
Well, I don't know if it's that dangerous; on the highways I go at 120 km/h
You can go to a bird national park
But what do you mean by national bird park? I don't know if there are any like that; there are national parks, but I don't know if they are specifically for birds.
maybe there are fishes?
If i had taken my gopro i couldve recorded the fishes but thats not what im interested in rn
Search them up
is your gear not weather sealed?
I'm going to photograph ducks, any recommendations?
yus
Green woodpecker super close to me
Z 400 4.5 VR S
bro
Nice
lens
Not even the f/2.8 tc vr
Yes Bro
ok ok
What Else
Could it be
I got confused
I cant see the woodpecker yet
@dusty fog do you have any astro-photo or bird photo with your z6 III?
i really want to buy that camera
why
it's a great camera, my examples won't change anything
(i have none)
why
Gawdamn
i'm lazy
um
r u trolling me
Bruh the woodpecker sounded like it was going away and now it sounds like its next to me again
How are you able to write here and at the same time have the bird get so close to you?
Can you smell what the rock is cooking
Because i aint making noise?
I only took the prime today
didn't see the woodpecker but it was probably under 40m away
nice
Holy big
have more to edit$
and i also need 45mp cause these are all Under 8mp crops lol
Good photo you just needed to get closer
For something closer to this
Do you have the uncropped
Crouch walking towards birds last day or 2 has seemed to have been helping me get closer
Was something in front of the lens?
just a leaf probably
Maybe its the lighting but compared to your other photos this one has some haziness to it
dehazed it a little bit more
This is a gem
i'm ngl i ain't got a car so i get people to take me
but everytime i go somewhere that's meant to be good i can't find shit 😭
before wildlife photography i didn't think i'd really need a car so i haven't done my license yet but i've just passed the code de la route
same but with everything near it's pretty easy with bike/bus

first thing i do when i get my license is drive to camargue
imma be sleeping in my car
thats gonna look fire when edited if its sharp
nice shot!
this is by far your best photo
thanks ☺️
I'm really impressed by the quality of the photo, honestly.
It's a really bad photo, I only took it to identify the bird. What is it?
I'll send more photos tomorrow; there are many I took, I still have to select them.
gray wagtail i think
yep, thanks.
Why isn't the background so blurred?
fstop
cause it's a shitty pns camera
you will need to get super close to the subject to get any kind of blur
😭
I already managed to get photos of birds with the background perfectly blurred, the problem is that the background was somewhat close.
what's that
Yeah basically you hit the point, the further away the object is the easier it is for the camera to blur the background when you're zoomed in
How old are you if I may ask
Yes
I got a nice photo just a few days ago
I saw them for the first time ever in this area, (first time ever in general was 20km away in school) and then sat with my boots sunken in the mud, on a breaking branch in a swamp so I can get pictures of it landing on a branch in the water
But unfortunately after 30mins of waiting I realized there k was too much grass so the images where unsharp so I threw a stick sideways to knock the 4 grass things down and then I had to wait another 30mins for a wagtail to land
My spot is pretty horrible though because you can easily just sink in the mud as if it were ice that you’re breaking through
It’s always a bit scary but I’m getting used to it luckily
19 iirc
Do you know the exposure triangle yet?
Well, I have to go to sleep, I'll read that tomorrow.
The higher the f stop (1.8), the more light it allows in and also allows for the background to have more bokeh (blurry)
Then you basically already know exposure triangle
Ok
I don’t really like all this basic stuff though since the things like bad iso aren’t shown
There are always plot twists
Little
But they do something
I think this photo is flawless, but if anyone can point it out, please do.
(And can you rate it?)
except the quality
19
Bro spent his money on cameras and lenses instead of driving license 💀
i'm doing it rn
Bruh still
was not necessary until i started wildlife photography
In Germany I can start at 17
I can go to all my wildlife spots with my bike
Car is actually worse
i can't go nowhere without a car
Brother
Your wildlife spots
Are crazy
hmm i live far away from them
3h by car from camargue
6h if i take the train + bus
i have a mini camargue but there's basically nothing other than 1 black swan
that's 30 mins away by car and 1h by bus
gorges du verdon is also about 1h20-2h away
mercantour 3h
You have kingfisher spots
they're gone 🙁
?
i haven't seen then in 2 months
Crazy
atleast i managed to get an incredible photo before they left ig
I couldn’t see my kingfishers for 5 months but yesterday I saw them for the first time since then
man look at the photo potential at the mercantour
But listen
I have no good spots really
The better spots are 21km away
So 42a day
If I go there
the closest to me is 17km away
1 min walk
Then you’ve already got good spots
Ocean is a big variety
Stop complaining
You leaked your location I just realized
ocean is overrated
there's fuck all the photograph
eh who cares
not like ur gonna come
👀
Uh
I’m going to France soon
Idk I already booked my flight
I’m not lying
Isn't that place tourisy
True
well i'll welcome you (with a taser)
Lmao
Then boom
it's fucking awful
Ykw
I still don’t know your house
unlivable
Sit there on the beach with a sign saying 5 dollar photographs
Bro talking bout tourists
i got shushed by some tourists at the gorges du verdon because she was filming a video 💀
she was literally screaming
dumbass biatch
this is about 40 mins by car from where i live
We have a mountain that’s like the most touristy place in the area and like every year I see like two helicopters landing there because someone was too stupid to climb again and got himself in a near death encounter
Like bro
I take the longer way with my 2.5kg camera setup
this is quite cool too
If you can’t climb with gear take the easy path
Imagine diving there
Yeah
cool until some great white shark arrives
Only problem I have no underwater housing for my camera and no underwater cam
Idc
I would shoot him with my 14mm
man i wish i had those place, only thing i have is bipolar weather
i've been there before and you can walk on all the light blue area
winter was horrible
brother winter still aint over here
we had 80% rain and 10% cloudy and 10% sunny
spring is just not coming
At least you don’t live in Germany
You get snow in April
German?

Quebec
there's some birds in this area
Ok
i'd love snow, i've only seen it once in my life here
I know I nice birding spot but unfortunately I wasn’t into birding when I went there plus I had only 300mm back then
lol
I also love it
Except if it snows and melts again
its very fun for when you have it, its not when it melts

lucky
Like 5 days ago we had sunshine and 15 degrees then it started to rain as strong as never in this year yet and then it snowed for 1h it was all white and 30mins later all snow was gone and sunny again
google street/satelite map hasn't been updated in about 10 years here
This was last week a year ago
And it looks cool but is actually shit that our snow here is just like mushy and not powdery so it’s always melting
And it melts on your cam when it snows
in my experience thats fine
On your shoes everywhere
Je
Choisis
Ie
Quebec
OUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Literally when I was in the mountains with like -10 in the snow it was more comfortable than 0 degrees in Germany
yo -10 is hoodie weather
Because the powder snow doesn’t stick to my shoes
being able to drive anywhere when i want is gonna be life changing
Last time I got -10 at home was when I still went to primary school
So over 6 years ago
march 22nd this year
coldest i've ever experienced here is probably -3°c at night
Same day we got +5
-1 to +1 weather that day
don't remember the temp when we got snow here cause iirc that was over 11 years ago
You literally have no gulf stream and are far up north that’s obvious you get weather like this

I dont have my big lens with me 😔
i dont have the 200-600 with me 😔
But why
Carry it as if it were a phone
im there with my family to do stuff not primarily to take pictures
not trying to damage it on the way
its time to upgrade the body
also it would cost 55€ to carry a bigger bag
