fast knoll
#

if i had to guess youre prob unable to get close enough for decent sharpness

naive fiber
#

This was my closest

#

I didn't use dxo on this one because I didn't really need it

#

Also my trial ran out

fast knoll
#

that one's nice

#

i bet dxo would make it look better

#

but totally not necessary

#

already sharp enough as is

naive fiber
#

I did try photolab but it kinda just did nothing

fast knoll
#

i just dont get how dxo makes ur stuff look worse lol

naive fiber
#

It's only photolab

#

I think it's an odd configuration issue

fast knoll
#

oh interesting

#

yea i just use the denoise plugin

#

then send it back to lightroom

naive fiber
#

Yeah pureraw does make it look better

naive fiber
fast knoll
#

thank you! that means a lot

#

that photo you got of the tit is amazing for a 200mm

naive fiber
#

I had a whole setup for it which I can link

fast knoll
#

i bet it mustve taken a lot of patience

#

i used ot have a 200

#

i could only get pics of bigger birds lol

naive fiber
#

I think it starts from here

fast knoll
#

oh wow

#

does the shutter go off automatically?

naive fiber
#

I have to focus and take the photo

#

So there are missed shots

tender galleon
#

i was taking photos of a few swans with my 250mm and then some old dude parks his car there ans takes out a freaking 600mm lens 😭

astral saffron
#

Doesn’t matter if you have a 70-200 or 600, the key is getting close

#

Every one of my favorite photos I’ve taken have that in common

tough hull
#

It’s not like that

#

My birding spot is a literal swamp

#

I need a boat to get closer

#

But I don’t have one so I need cropping and that’s where dxo is a to better because when you have less resolution you see a big difference between those two

tough hull
#

I have it rn

#

Like test trial but since I saw what pure raw can do, I will use pure RAW together with affinity probably

tough hull
#

I’m said I didn’t save up for 400-800

#

Would be much better

#

Why not just this

#

1.4x tc and my swamp gear is ready

#

Lmao

#

Bruh in Germany it’s fully legal

#

I have a ton of vids from my uncle where he’s shooting the boar and it’s from the thermal sight mounted to his gun lol

Use blinds, wear neutral clothes, be still and quiet for them to come to you

naive fiber
#

You will always scare some

#

You need to simply wait there, and wait for a bird to land

tough hull
naive fiber
#

When I was new I waited like 4h to get 0 good shots

#

And then some days are like that

#

Some days you get one in 10 mins

#

The nature isn't there for you so you must be patient

#

You learn to scare birds less though

dreamy tinsel
scarlet tulip
#

It does the job

grizzled nebula
scarlet tulip
#

My rule for long lenses is that the bare lens should be at least as fast as the first digit of its focal length

#

300/2.8, 400/4.5, 500/5.6, 600/6.3

#

If it’s slower than that it had better provide other advantages

naive fiber
#

Not the worst

scarlet tulip
#

300/4 PF is the easy example of a lens that makes up for its speed

grizzled nebula
naive fiber
#

I can pick one up for what

#

500?

grizzled nebula
#

Yh just get used

naive fiber
naive fiber
dreamy tinsel
#

how much is a 150-600?

naive fiber
#

Cheaper I believe

grizzled nebula
#

The 180-600 seems very nice but much more expensive obviously

grizzled nebula

Meant to reply to notversly

naive fiber
grizzled nebula

The rf 100-500 is so sharp wide open

#

What a great lens

dreamy tinsel
grizzled nebula
#

Wish it was a bit brighter tho

naive fiber
#

But it's significantly cheaper so idk

#

My 70-200 is more expensive

naive fiber
#

So

scarlet tulip
#

On a D600 the 200-500 is the best inexpensive zoomchoice

500mm f5.6 pf would be nice but yknow

grizzled nebula

scarlet tulip
#

How does Lightroom ā€œmix up the moon?ā€

naive fiber
#

It depends on usecase

#

šŸ‘

grizzled nebula
scarlet tulip
#

But how does it do that?

fast knoll
naive fiber
#

Or do you have another camera for photos

fast knoll
#

i do both

#

took a few photos before i took that video

#

it was quite far away tho

#

so i decided video might look better

naive fiber
#

Oh I see

magic crown
#

I've heard there's a park near my home (5 minutes at walk) with 3 owls ! I'll go to this park when the weather will be good again

fast knoll
#

i think it was actually originally advertised as a video camera but im not sure

#

something about its 8k capacity

#

ive never used it tho i just shoot 4k

undone slate
#

@fast knoll How are all your bird photos that you've posted taken from so close up?

fast knoll
#

patience

#

and cropping

#

my photos have a wide range of pixels

#

for example this one from today was quite a heavy crop therefore the image quality is not as good. 6mp

#

this one looks better because it's around 12mp

#

for every photo i choose to edit tho i toss out like at least 100

undone slate
fast knoll
#
  1. 45mp
  2. sharp lens
  3. correct settings in the field to avoid motion blur
  4. still being close enough to the subject that a bit of cropping won't destroy image quality
#

u can only crop so much before ur image looks like shit

#

i only take photos of stuff that i know will be big enough in the frame to still look good after cropping

undone slate
fast knoll
#

and it's still a great camera

#

sure u won't be able to crop as heavily as with a 45mp camera but there are benefits such as better low light performance

#

24mp is more than enough to get a great quality bird photo

undone slate
fast knoll
#

prob not unless u zoom to like 300% lol

#

or u blow it up onto a big print

#

don't worry about megapixels

undone slate
#

I have a question: does my Sony HX60 have better image quality than a P1100?

scarlet tulip
#

Are you actually going to buy anything, or is this idle questioning?

undone slate
scarlet tulip
#

The R5 will allow for marginally more cropping

undone slate
#

And well, I don't think a camera at its maximum zoom of 3000mm has better quality than my camera at 720mm.

scarlet tulip
#

Both will make perfectly good bird images

fast knoll
#

canon r5

#

it's what i use

u can also try masking background and dropping tint/exposure

#

this photo had an all white background before

True

But also it might just be me, but it also starts looking a little too unnatural considering how much fancier Anne’s hummingbirds males look in sunlight šŸ¤”

So other birds yes, hummingbirds maybe not

#

Case in point: I’ve done it for other birb photos, just those that don’t have entire heads of iridescent feathers that flash magenta in sunlight haha

fast knoll

even in sunlight they can be all black tho if the angle is right

i have to switch to spot AF to fix it

Yeah, it’s better if you have time to sit and wait for them to come back instead of having to fight daylight

This young male stayed on the exact same branch for a couple minutes at a time guarding a feeder so I got so many pictures of him

I'm really struggling to get bird sitting -> in flight captured. I get 1 frame in focus which is where they look like a torpedo when they jump and fold everything back kekw I'm really thinking about moving to that lens

#

But it apparently sells out like the instant it hits MPB / Keh and I'm not sure I wanna spend $3k on a lens at the moment. MPB will take my current one for $880 though

Check Facebook marketplace too

we pay $9.46 a "gallon" in france

I mean I wasn't really complaining about gas. I said it'd push it towards a price I'd just get a nicer one shipped anyways. BUT if I did want to complain about gas prices, valid. You'd complain if yours became 5euro/L

idk about the conditions you were shooting at, but if you could move arnd you can position the bird on the deep green background instead of all the branches

#

thats very distracting

you need a different scenery in general
something more nature like

go to a forest or something

why

naive fiber

It'll increase the amount of slip that the wood has discouraging birds

undone slate
#

I have a question, how long did it take for birds to come to the feeder?

naive fiber
#

If the feeder is hard to access they don't want to come

naive fiber
#

Give or take a couple of hours

undone slate
#

wow

naive fiber

I live right next to a nest of bluetits so it was bound to happen quickly

it's a good dog

undone slate
naive fiber

They will be discouraged if the dog is near

undone slate
#

I don't think so, because it's high

#

I also planted some thistles there that are tall, so I hope they come; in fact, "goldfinch" means "thistle eater."

naive fiber
#

They will most likely

#

It's a danger

#

Dangers discourage until dangers leave

undone slate

😭

naive fiber
#

How do you know none came?

undone slate
#

I had nowhere else to put it

#

But hopefully they'll get used to it.

undone slate
#

I suppose so, because the feeder looks the same to me.

#

I don't know, but I think I could scatter chicken feed in the area where it's usually most abundant, and then follow a path until I reach my house, maybe?

what do you think
