100-400mm without tc at 400mm:

#

it's pretty sharp

#

how i've been looking at these scores is, below 2000 is soft, around 2500 is a good sharp image, and above 3000 is a wow sharp image like the 50mm 1.8 z.

#

actually the 50mm z is above 3500.

#

jesus christ, the 600mm z:

#

2500 corner performance. very sharp all throughout the image.

shut hazel
#

ooo

#

do charts like this exist for the tamrn 50-400?

brazen hemlock
scarlet tulip
#

they're my favorite think Nikon makes

shut hazel
#

i love my 50-400

scarlet tulip
#

like this is just stupid

brazen hemlock
brazen hemlock
#

i started looking at the reflections in the eyes for sharpness, heh

#

my sharpest 50-250mm

scarlet tulip
#

it's even acceptable on a 1.4, which to me is crazy

scarlet tulip
#

have to crop more

brazen hemlock
#

100-400mm eye reflections. i think that's a car. that white part.

scarlet tulip
#

sometimes you can even see yourself

#

that handles the APSC sensor well

shut hazel
#

i paid i think 1600 cad for mine

#

z mount 100-400 is 3650 cad

#

๐Ÿ’€

brazen hemlock
#

aroudn 2500. sharp.

#

unlike my 100-400mm score earlier which was in the 1800s.

fast knoll
#

is there one for the rf 100-500

scarlet tulip
#

that's the 500/5.6

scarlet tulip
fast knoll
#

i see

#

it's ok i know it's quite sharp just wanted to see if they had a number lol

brazen hemlock
#

no 100-500

#

i like that site bc, well they have a lot of nikon lenses, and also, from my understanding, they use a consistent test across. and i have the tested lenses so i get a sense of what the sharpness of each score range is like. like 50-250mm is soft, and i see that it scores low. that helps me understand how sharp a lens would be.

scarlet tulip
#

they're also great about updating reviews with new lens comparisons

brazen hemlock
#

ah didn't realize they go as far as updating them. awesome.

#

and yea, that site was instrumental in me deciding on the 100-400mm.

#

the focal length waas right for me too, but i pored over that site to make my telephoto lens decision.

#

and my 100-400mm primary purpose is not birding

#

it's for getting sharp telephoto shots at grand canyon

#

if i really really get into birding, i'm getting a prime

shut hazel
#

i started looking at some of those charts

#

crazy sharp

#

but its also expensive as balls so id expect sharpness

dusty fog
#

the whole point of it is to be sharp

#

no autofocus on that one remember

brazen hemlock
# shut hazel

yea i've looked around and i believe noct has the highest score on that site

shut hazel
#

never knew that

dusty fog
#

astro specific lens

brazen hemlock
#

yea noct is a very specialized lens

shut hazel
#

astro photography lens?

brazen hemlock
#

hmm, i don't think it's particularly for astro, and the focal length isn't necessarily the best for things like capturing the milky way. and there is a discussion of what that lens is actually good for. i'm not sure either.

dusty fog
#

its so you can say you have a f/0.95 lens

gilded gale
#

Aye! Portlander here ๐Ÿ˜„

brazen hemlock
gilded gale
#

Rippers lol

shut hazel
#

astoria

brazen hemlock
#

lol yea, i've seen people get confused on reddit, people visiting each other's subs.

shut hazel
#

isnt that where theres a lighthouse

#

and you can throw a wooden plane from it

#

ii remember going there a few years ago maybe in like 2014 or 15

brazen hemlock
#

probably astoria, oregon.

#

z 50mm 1.8 is an insanely sharp lens

#

and it's like $400

#

this was shot with the 50mm 1.8. check the ruler.

#

800% zoomed in:

gilded gale
#

This is what I use personally

shut hazel
shut hazel
brazen hemlock
#

but softer in the edge of the photo

shut hazel
#

i have the F mount version

brazen hemlock
#

it was shot at f2.8

#

in the center, the score is around 4k, which is bonkers. for the edges, the score is 2000.

#

i mentioned that 2000 is when i start noticing with my eyes that it's soft

#

that screenshot i just posted is an example of that.

shut hazel
#

maybe in the future i will sell and get the z version

brazen hemlock
# shut hazel i have the F mount version

the f mount version def looks fairly sharp starting from 2.8, but f1.8 and f2 sharpness seems much better with the z. so if you are shooting wide open often, then the upgrade seem like it will be worth it

shut hazel
#

i rarely use the 50 tbh

brazen hemlock
shut hazel
#

im looking at either a 24-70 or 24-120 in the f mount as my next one

#

the 24-70 f mount will be way better than buying a z mount

#

f mount is like 600 cad

#

z is 3200

brazen hemlock
#

yea that makes a lot of sense

shut hazel
#

fr

scarlet tulip
#

not a gallery shot at all

#

but it's fun to see the hawk fight off the crow for once

brazen hemlock
#

i think i'm going to go to jamaica bay this weekend. i have enough cold weather gear to be toasty down to -10 degrees or so.

brazen hemlock
#

heated base layers are soooo good. heated base layer + insulation layer + wind block layer = bird profit.

#

if i wear my heated base layer pants, down pants, and ski pants, i think i would sweat in -20.

brazen hemlock
brazen hemlock
#

damn, wind gust reaching 30 mph+. maybe i won't go this weekend. it is pretty windy and pretty damn cold. i'll see how i feel.

dusty fog
#

wind is by far worst weather condition

#

rain or snow without wind is no problem

Got this pic the same day where I got my kingfisher in the rain shot, never edited it because I thought it didnt have enough detail lol

i gotta try this on my 600 F/4 when i get both TCs

green meadow
#

Here's another with 2x tc. Yeah, it is sharp enough for this kind of close range detail shots if you need bit more magnification. But if subject is further away then air often causes haze that reduces sharpness. Also aperture f13 is really limiting in many situations.

scarlet tulip

Seems like a nice overwater combination, or something for marshes

scarlet tulip
#

Howโ€™s the lens

grizzled nebula
#

The background separation is insane

#

Quite heavy and slightly loud but who cares

charred holly
#

f4 depth of field on a full frame camera has to be quite tight

#

Already had cases of blurry beaks at f6.3 on an APSC lol

brazen hemlock
#

that was a learning experience for me too. i didn't realize how shallow dof is at 600mm f/8.5 is if the subject is close. and 600 f/4 is less than 1/4th dof of f8.5.

#

(i shoot 400mm f/5.6 on my crop, so it converts to 600mm f/8.5)

#

at 600mm f/8.5, if the subject is 5 meters away, which is def possible with a bird, the dof is 3cm. 1.5cm to the front, and 1.5cm to the rear.

#

at 600mm f4, dof is 1.4cm

#

interesting...why is it 3cm for f/8.5, and 1.4cm for f/4?

i feel it like it should be a 1/4 difference, not a 1/2 difference. my understanding is that each stop is 1/2 dof difference. since f/4 to f/8.5 is about 2 stops, i was expecting 1/4 difference.

#

at f/5.6 -> dof = 3cm
at f/8 -> dof = 4.4cm
at f/11 -> dof = 6cm

k, i've misunderstood something about dof. time to study.

#

why did i think dof is halved or doubled each stop??????? facePalmfacePalmfacePalmfacePalmfacePalm. i don't like being flat out wrong like this.

#

makes sense that dof follows the same progression as aperture

grizzled nebula
#

i'm pissed off about tomorrow

not going to take pics of the raptors cause it'll be raining and ik they won't be out

#

i need to try video on me camera

gilded gale
#

it's fun to capture longer moments like that

shut hazel
#

what tripod do you guys use for photo/video for birds btw?

#

i have some cheap amazon tripod my parents got me a couple years ago

gilded gale
#

a picture wouldn't convey that moment in the same way

shut hazel
#

i wanna upgrade this year since im sure a 600mm will get too heavy for this one

gilded gale
#

I use a gitzo GT3531LSV

#

They're often sold used for under $200

fast knoll
#

Very nice video

#

I like the sound too

shut hazel
#

expensive brand new

#

ill check facebook marketplace

#

my list of things that arent lenses for this year are a new tripod, new bag, extra batteries/a power bank, and some filters like a variable nd

gilded gale
#

yeah, dont buy one new, no reason to. If the carbon is in good condition it will last a lifetime when taken care of

shut hazel
#

ima go to the camera store tomorrow to check some out

fast knoll
#

davinci is also quite good at stabilziing video

#

u have to be steady in the field but it can help a lot for handheld

fast knoll
#

is that 8k

#

there r too many video settings lol

#

i just do 4k 60 usually

gilded gale
#

Just 4k 120

#

oh sorry, it is 30 fps, on davinci import

#

I need to learn a lot more about video, It's fun to do when the conditions outside arent as good for photos

fast knoll
#

also idk if u meant the have the black bars on ur video but i accidentally did that one time cause i shot in 4096 x 2160 instead of 3840 x 2160

#

i switched after and i think the latter is the standard resolution

gilded gale
#

I do and i dont haha, I forget to change my video settings all the time lol

#

I do have it set at 4096x2160, but i keep meaning to change it

#

4K-D VS 4K-U >.<

fast knoll
#

i wanna try 4k 30 oversampled

#

i kinda like smoother video tho

gilded gale
#

since I dont have an actual 'video' setup i always just rely on the smoother 120fps recording lol

#

especially since I'm handholding most of the time

fast knoll
#

davinci stabilization is rlly good

gilded gale
#

is it available in the free version? I havent looked at it

fast knoll
#

yep

#

completely free

fast knoll
gilded gale
#

I literally just trim clips and add a few audio tracks haha

fast knoll
#

yea me too lol

gilded gale
#

is that a ruby throated? they look really similar to the anna's hummingbirds we have around here

fast knoll
#

just an anna's

gilded gale
#

ah ok!

fast knoll
#

got a bunch of anna's photos today lol

gilded gale
#

i guess ruby throated's have the red going further back around the neck

#

ooh, and a slightly decurved bill

#

I'll have to look into doing some 8k 60 and stabilizing it

fast knoll
#

yea i need to play around with settings more

gilded gale
#

I have some 8k 60 recordings, but havent done anything with them

#

I really dont like the UI of davinci so I've been avoiding learning video stuff lol

fast knoll
#

it's def confusing at first

#

i still dont use 99% of the features

#

i just stabilize lol

#

sometimes if im feeling bold i'll adjust a slider or two

gilded gale
#

I think I'll have to mess with color grading 8k canon raw

#

or probably just apply the correct LUTs

shut hazel
#

tht reminds me

#

yesterday afterschool i saw a male and female ruby throated land right next to each other

#

it waslike golden lighting

#

onb i ran inside to get my camera but they were long gone by the time i put my bag and stuff down ๐Ÿ˜ญ

fast knoll
#

log is too hard lol

gilded gale
#

I sadly cant do 8k 60 unless it's in raw ๐Ÿ™

#

time to learn ๐Ÿ˜„

shut hazel
#

i think my camera does raw video

#

is raw video like raw photos but video??

#

idk

gilded gale
#

essentially yes

#

You're right tho, thats some good shit ๐Ÿ˜„

fast knoll
#

wow documentary worthy

#

is there a reason u export in 30 instead of 60?

gilded gale
#

nope, leme do the same thing at 60 ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

what do u use to add the music lol

#

it makes it so much better

jesus, how the hell do these birds fly in this temperature? with the speed they are flying at, the wind chill temperature on the body must be insane.

magic crown
brazen hemlock
#

i'm just thinking more about the physics aspect of it. like, metal becomes brittle around -40f. in alaska, things shatter all the time. liquid freezes really fast at that temperature. and these alaskan birds, they are flying up high in -60f. i can't imagine what kind of temperature the bird is subjected to when the ambient temperature is -60f. we humans would die pretty fast.

#

i heard about some birds that migrate over the himalayas. it is so insane to me that a living thing can survive in that condition.

Perhaps some fringing correction? I see quite a bit of green at the right side

half yacht
#

How do I do that?

half yacht
#

I see the green now

#

I see a defringe option in lightroom But I messed aorund with the green fringing slider and saw no difference

charred holly
#

Lightroom has profiled corrections, if it isn't enough you could play with sliders until you get the right tint out

half yacht
#

thats the best I can do I reckon ๐Ÿ˜ญ

#

defringing is straining my eyes lowkey

You can press alt when using sliders to have a better idea of what is being changed

Do not stress it much anyway, photo is already very good ๐Ÿ˜„

grizzled nebula

100-500 is so light

for a tele not really

feels like you're barely holding anything in ur hand

magic crown

size is more defendable sure but for the weight almost all lenses have 1kg or more

grizzled nebula

well personally i'd rather have something light, super sharp and small that's external than a big heavy lens that's internal weight and has worse IQ

magic crown

the 200-600 is one of the best shaprness btw

anyway we gonna get destroyed for having a brand war here KEKW

At some point, I should just let go and empty my bank account...

green canyon

but i might order the same thing you did for your lens

grizzled nebula
#

they don't seem to like when i have the lens on the tripod cause it's just a big reflective thing, when i handhold it and hide it behind a wall they'll perch

#

or when i use a small white lens

green canyon
#

ive found the way i move to be the biggest factor

#

if something large moves quickly theyre gone

i set up the tripod and don't move for a while
