no setup this is just a local park
this guy was super chill
i observed him going back to the same spot a few times
so i just stood around
thanks to @gilded yarrow for editing this for me
this is def going up on my wall i like this one a lot
Very clean
rolling green hills in Sonoma County, California, near the Napa-Sonoma county line
Today might have been my luckiest day of 2026 so far, 3 new lifers
Barred, Great Grey and Boreal owls
holy shit
i love great gray owls
too bad we dont have them here
they look so cool
damn
I havent even found one wild owl
I seen one fly by me while I was driving in the canyons not too long ago and another in my backyard but that's about all of them I've ever seen
Im at 4 (with photos) and 5 total
can't wait to see the edit
ima keep them simple tho
stunning
what a shot
beautiful, i just think that big stump at the bottom is a bit distracting
i also wish the perch was better but its hard when its sleeping there
tomorrow I'm going to see the only wild Lesser Flamingo in France !
we can say it's the rarest bird in France (with the belted kingfisher in north France)
Theres a belted kingfisher in france???
Yeah just one
Belted Kingfisher in Brittany thrills French birders - BirdGuides https://share.google/CmEU3pPcN4al9sUX7
that's cool
Damn insane
Would love to go see that
Yeah same but idk if he still stay here in summer
belteds are pretty skittish from my experience
u could prob camp out for it tho
or get an in flight shot
Yeah i'll try it this summer if he stays here
But for now i'll try to see the Lesser Flamingo
I want to see the Lesser Flamingo
Some other images of the Boreal Owl
A proper yawn
Insanely fat and cute
I'm with it
Yup she seemed so tired
I like night herons but have like no photos of them
For the printer users is anyone familiar with this?
nvm the ink refill costs so much
It takes 11 print cartridges. They may last quite a number of prints. Don’t know.
apparently i need to print like once a week to maintain it
Its kinda crazy that just one of those is 70€ tho
I'd say that doesnt make sense unless you sell tons of prints
I didnt look up the price wow.
I use one of the refillable epson printers. Probably not good enough to sell but they look fine on my wall 🤷♂️
I couldn't be more pink even if I tried
woa
sometime this week im probably gonna go somewhere for some photos
but idk where
bird photos at some random park?
plane photos at night in the fog?
awooga
whats the raw
I hope this is sharp. Their orange wings are so cool always wanted a good bif of them. But its soo hard lol. And the color pops so much in winter
How do u guys practice birds in flight? Still struggling with it
Pigeons are pretty cool to train on. They are fairly big, predictable, common and aren't scared easily.
Ait tyy!!
Merci 😉
I just have a hard time following the bird cause my lens is so big and long zoom. 5.3kg and 960mm w crop sensor. I keep handhelding it which is prob the reason haha
My setup is barely more than 1kg, I have no experience handling something 5 times heavier but I must imagine handholding it would be very hard indeed
Usually the exotic primes are paired with tripods, yeah
I was eyeing the sigma 500 5.6 for that reason
500mm for only 1370g sounds like a dream
But 3000$, ouch...
Some more 70mm birds
tomorrow it's little owl time !
My technique is spray and pray
As a result, I got very few good bif shots
I need to get better at it
it basically is spray and pray
but u also need decent tracking
jan wegener says to practice bringing the camera to your eye quickly and having the bird in frame already
so hand eye coordination
yeah, keeping the bird in frame is the most important thing
Also having the right settings
I have a dedicated button for bif
but I sometimes forget to press it lol
ROBINNN
hummingbird photo printed
it was 5 cad
just need to get a frame now
I got it peinred in 8x12
probably shouldve went bigger
These are my 2 best once
eagle one is sick
u can even see the band numbers
i have a decent amount of nice BIF but theyre all larger birdrs
i suck at tracking the small ones
Getting a good composition with a BIF is the hardest part
what is bif?
Now all i need is an 8x12 frame
when my mom saw the print she got annoyed the bird isnt centered
but its very nice i will find a good wall for it
thankmks
amazon has these 8x12 mcs frames with really thin borders
but only in 6 or 12 pack aailable
6 pack for 30 cad
i might aswel jus get that and print a few more 8x12s out
one thing i have a chronic problem about 😭
also heres a Great Grey blinkung
amazing
also blackout free viewfinder rlly helps with in flight tracking
r5 doesnt have that
but r5ii does
im like tempted to upgrade lol
Yeah r7 doesnt have it either lol
better AF, less rolling shutter, precapture, blackout free shooting
but realistically i dont need it
im not making money from bird photography so i should stop dropping money on it lmao
r5 is already great
i need to remind myself
yeah im waiting for the r7ii and then i'll compare stuff
but first is a new transmission
And heres the Barred Owl at sunrise
Needs a stacked sensor I believe
was it sharp?
Im getting anew lens at some point and am debating whether to get one for sheaper which only goes to 500mm or one for a bit more expensive that goes to 600mm
is the difference between 500 and 600mm really that big? and is it worht it to go get the one with 600mm focal length
the lens is for birdong and this chat is less tosic that the gear channels so I asked here
ill also ask in a gear channel though
What focal length do you use the most right now? Do you crop a lot?
200mm
I dont crop all that much
well I cropped a lot on one photo but still
It wasn't great :/
You're on Nikon right? I wouldn't let your choice be dictated by just the focal length difference, but rather the sharpness, focussing speed and such. Those are more important than the 100mm difference
alright
FF or apsc?
It is a difference you will notice, but it’s not huge
Apsc
then 400 or 500 is enough
600 ffeq is perfect imo
everything above and heat haze becomes too much of a problem
frame filling shot at 600 is fine unless its 30c
frame filling at 800 might already suck
No 🙁 blutty af
We get heat haze maybe 3 times a year in my area
But good to know
Trust its worse with a big tele
its visible long before its visible by eye
you even get heat haze when its very cold and the sun starts shining
I'd say heat haze can become noticeable at every temperature just depending on how constant the temp is and how sunny it is
yay
my 8x12 frames are here
single frame was12
and 6 were 30
so of course i went for the 6 pack lmao
Are there any particular businesses you guys use for printing and framing
In the UK preferably
i just went to walmart and got the photo printed
then i bought a frame online
Ah ok cool
theres probably stores that can print photos out for you though
Yeah we have Boots and I think my local Walmart equivalent has a printing place
I just wondered if there was like a special way of doing it
i think there are specialized stores that do it much more professionally and give more options
but if you wanna do it cheaply then you can do this too
Are you showing that bird a picture of himself on your phone?
What?
real
its very reflective
i think i printed glossy
do yall print glossy or satin
Just joking. It looks great. I print both. I would probably print that glossy.
Oh I see it now lol
satin?
yeah this ones gloss although i think for other photos i should go satin
ah
lemme look actually
oh it just says "luster finish"
think it was just matte
i used to like glossy but i think i prefer matte
less glare when u hang it up
A lot of online print shops will print you a set of very small test prints on a few different papers very cheep.
Best way to print is to print it yourself with your home printer
Cost less and almost same quality
The printer need ofc the option
Little owl !
smowl
First visit !
I have a pretty good idea for this one i will test if it's work
I just got like the same exact shot this last weekend
After the Little Owl time to do the Northen Gannet
With the only breed in the region
howd u find the owl?
seems like u found it so easily
A friend told me the spot
ah i see
Just ask yourself "if I was an owl, where would I be?" and boom you'll find one
Unfortunately the answer is often “up a tree away from people”
Deep in a cave
Aight I ordered another 300mm 2.8. hopefully this one works now cause I haven't gone out to photograph in over a month and it's totally not driving me crazy
We're out today looking for an owl! It's an overcast night, which is good for photography, and we heard some distinctive owl hooting. I was searching for a screech owl and finally found one, paying close attention to its call. This owl video captures the essence of a cute owl in its natural habitat.
lol the settings
what about them
nothing seems glaringly incorrect to me
oh noo what happened to the first one
It wouldn't focus
I think the focusing motor was damaged in shipping or something
mpb?
The one I ordered is cheaper but it says it has moderate internal haze that may or may not affect IQ
Usedphotopro
Original one I ordered was from ebay
Some seller in Japan
its just rly dark outside
ohh lol
if i saw a screech owl that late i would still prob try to get photos with my f7.1
which would be impossible
My little baby is up on mpb still https://share.google/0OfdnfZHLY1PndcRF
if you can get a 2 second pic of an owl u can prolly get a longer one
yea
it had a little motion blur already
this guy is the eastern screech owl expert
he uses a 400 2.8
why cant canon do the built in tc smh
Yeah it's insane, you just get a free 560mm f4 lens with your 400 2.8
It may be because canon has a patent or something of a tc that has 1x, 1.4x, and 2x all in one. I doubt they even release that in the next few years tho
current canon teleprimes are just the ef ones with a built in adapter
gen 2 teleprimes will prolly be a lot cooler
but also $$$$$
are there any confirmed release dates for these
i feel like gen 1 rf lenses are already so good
it's hard to improve
unless they can get even lighter than 6 pounds
which is already quite amazing for a 600 f4
no prolly not for a couple more years
I bet before 2030!
welp i have 8 more years of school/training
once i actually start making money hopefully the gen 2 is out
first ef 600 f4 was 1999 then gen 2 came out 12 years later and then gen 3 came out 7 years after that. The rf version thats based on gen 3 ef came out two years later. The rf version is 5 years old.
so idk 2-10 years
took 19 years for ef 400 2.8 to get an update
first gen ef 600 f4 (no stabilization 💀 ) is like $1500 on ebay
funny ass bird
And it also weighs approximately 2 fucktons @remote remnant
Backlog or in the southern hemisphere. It’s summer here in Namibia right now
Its in Indiana US, so ig just backlog
We back baby
Too bad it's raining
Rainy photos look super cool
If only he were perched on something more visually appealing
If it's raining I want it pouring, drizzle looks okay but a downpour is where it's at
Today it's time for gannet
I hope to see some of them today
Unedited shots
which lens?
smh
what a beautiful posh bird
Gannets are lovely
holy sharpness
damnnnn
zamn
the natural edit version of the 1st shot
i birb'd: #🖼・photo-sharing message
Nice set of images
yh i messed up but it looks kinda nice so i kept it like that
U need to work on ur handheld video skills lol
I had the waves going over my shoes 😭
But i do need to work on that anyway
Monopod and tripod
Ofc a Kingfisher perches right in front of me when I only have my 24-70mm with me and its too far away 😭
Istg these Kingfishers know me and just want to taunt me
It is well known that birds are paid by camera companies to always be slightly out of reach or in the shadows
Gotta sell new hardware $$$
100-500
500
i stabilized it tho
in da vinci
here's an example of r5 + 100-500 unstabilized vs stabilized
ok the stabilized one sent first lol
no matter how hard i try my handheld is a tiny bit shaky
those vermillions are so stupid pretty
yea this was my first time seeing one i was like damn that thing is hella red
them, scarlet tanagers, and cardinals
climbing birb
some shots i got while i took a short walk
man u have such cool birds
went looking for owls this morning but didnt see any
the view was cool tho
kingfisher!
I think the perfect focal length is a fast 500mm that can be teleconverted easily. 600/4 can be a bit tough to get BIF shots up close, 500/4 is much easier and also easier to travel with/lighter in theory. With teleconverters you can get a 700 which is perfect for tighter shots, and 1000 which is much nicer to use than 1200 when you 2X a 600.
If you're talking about bare lenses that don't take TC's well, I would get a zoom that goes as far as you can afford. Something like the 400-800 or 200-800 for birds.
On crop 600 is plenty though... Just get a very good sharp lens
I wanna 400 2.8
The only problem is I'd use the 2x all the time
And I don't wanna do that
For me 600 is great but I think a new 500 f/4 would be awesome too
Especially if it was like, 2400g or something
I'm trying bird videography today
Even the old one was a lot smaller than the 600
I bet they could make it nearly 100-300 size nowadays
That would be awesome.
Physics would dictate it could definitely could be smaller than the Nikon 400 /2.8 TC and RF 400 /2.8 by a pretty big margin, and those are a lot smaller then the RF 600 which is what I have now. Unfortunately it'll never happen 😭
Nice
I'm not sure what the best video settings are since I'm new to video really but I'm experimenting with different things and figuring it out...
Great idea
Difference from 500-600 is barely noticeable
Not in size cost and weight.
Theoretically
And with anything above 600 heat haze becomes a problem too quickly imo, I think 600 is pretty much ideal, I mean theres reasons why 600 f4 is like the Nr 1 wildlife lens pros use
also it's noticeable. I have both
Pro bird photogs also use TC's 40+% of the time
But yeah if you're just a birder 600 is great
I'd definitely take a $2000 cheaper and lighter and smaller lens in exchange for 500mm because 1200 is a bit unnecessary compared to 1000 with the 2x.
You're just too far away then. You can use 1000+mm without heat haze issues if you're still the same distance as you would have been at 600. It doesn't double your manageable working distance of course
But why would you need 800+ at closer distances?
Why not?
Cuz even with 600 you can fill the frame
But at 15m heat haze will be a problem once it gets higher than like 20c
heat haze is independent of actual temperature
It's about temperature differential between a surface like the ground and the air
Yeah ik, had heat haze at around 0c a few weeks ago lmao
But ofc it gets worse once its even hotter
eh, I personally think 600 is ideal reach wise, but yeah maybe for some subjects more would be even nicer
Yeah there's a reason I have a 600, but I think 500 is probably perfect, just due to being much easier on the wallet/back/arms/packing
If there was a modern 500 f/4 smaller than the 400/2.8's I'd sell my 600 f/4 for one.
Yeah true
And for situations like flying swallows, a few hundred grams of weight loss and that extra FOV is awesome
600 can be tough for stuff flying around fast
Yeah I use my 100-500 for that haha
But an in-between lens would be awesome
Still bright enough for rainforest conditions but not quite as crazy to deal with as the 600
Imagine a mirrorless version another inch shorter than this and sans a few hundred grams
It's theoretically possible
The RF 600 is longer than that one due to the adapter
Yeah that would be sick
Man, there was a ~400$ discount on the Sigma 500mm f5.6 and I have been biting my nails very hard not to order it
I have picked up wildlife photography less than a year ago and I feel like upgrading my 70 350 so early would be a mistake
I am very far from being wealthy and I don't make money from this hobby 😅
nahh
dec 2023 I got a canon 250d with a old ass tamron 70-300
around april 2024 I had my a7iii with the sony 200-600
may 2025 I upgraded my a7iii to the a7iv

Summer 2024 I got a 100-400 for my sony a6400, 5 months later I got my Z8 and 180-600
I am always a bit wary to go too fast, when I picked up guitar I played for years on a terrible 200$ guitar until I felt I was worthy of anything else lol
Nah I'm exactly the other way around
well
I knew the a7iii would get me better pictures
and it wasnt fun photographing knowing my cam was limiting me so hard
Fair enough, depends on how financially secure you are ofc and how much effort and time you have to put into the hobby
if i really get into photography, i'll probably get z8+600mm f6.3 eventually.
skill issue
download more sharpness
shouldve done that smh, wouldve saved me 4k€
Z8 is really good, but compared to other new models it's missing pre-capture
Can def be really nice for bird photography, but not a must tbh
k i get z8ii
Z8 is fine
Precapture is probably the thing I miss the most on my a6700
pre-capture is a hyperniche thing that, while nice, does not make or break a system at all
Too bad APSC is kind of an afterthough for Sony
nah you def miss the better noise performance of a ff sensor more
yeah very true
I mean Z8 does actually have precap, but for jpeg only
fun to play around with at feeders in good light, but not more usefull than that
True tbh, I only take my camera when there isn't a single cloud in sight lol
Duck it, here are two shots I hesitated to post because they were taken when I started the hobby on probably one of the worse wildlife lens on the market
theyre pretty nice
Great flight shots!
yea z8 is great overall
bird of prey bif shots are my dream shots
few rainy shots from today
you're in the right place for peregrines, too
so many tall buildings
lucky, i've never been that close
i'm hoping for more broad-wings this year, they're fun to catch flying
she has it in her Name lol
i would guess the sigma contemporary
dayummmm
Sadly pretty far away from me, only 1.5h from where my dad lives tho
Beobachtungsturm Vogelschutzgebiet Nette
Thanks! Might check it out when I visit my dad again
Its been a while since i got a nice photo of a Black-Capped Chickadee. Still a BOAS but I like it
yeah sigma 150-600 contemporary... i'm starting to think about upgrading though because the fx z8 sensor is unkind to the flaws / softness of the sigma
you've got light editing on lock. so nice.
electronic shutter goes brr
does Zf have bird AF i forget
yea, but i was using z50ii
meanwhile, af isn't the issue
it's more that with the 600mm, even the slightest movement affects the composition significantly.
and you are moving your camera/lens to follow the bird, and the bird will chance speed and direction, often abrubtly.
i'm thinking that learning the habits of the bird, and their flight pattern, how they like to land, and if i can figure out any tell signs they are about to dive, could be useful in the future.
though, i think this is one of those where nothing will beat practice. just need to practice tracking birds.
Is ur camera blackout free or nah
Mine isn’t
no it isn't
I think it makes tracking a bit more difficult
yea it's frustrating
Yea it def takes practice
it blacks out, and then the bird is suddenly on the other side of the frame
I learned that I need to move faster than I think lol
yea i'm trying to lead with the lens more, to give it more space towards where it's flying
but it also means that if the bird changes directions, i may need to move a larger distance
For my camera there’s no actual “blackout” but it only shows me the previous photo I took in a series so I’m always a frame behind
ah i guess instead of blacking out, they are just freezing the frame
it scares me away from buying certain mirrorlesses
but yea, being slightly behind on what you see can def make bif trackign difficult
Gotta make do with what u have tho unfortunately
It’ll make u better for when u upgrade
wait. so, this is a super silly q, but wouldn't dslr have black out also? doesn't the mirror have to clap? heh, i haven't used a dslr before.
not exactly no its a bit different system than mirrorless
It does when the mirror flips up tho right?
I haven’t used a dslr in a while
i'll look more into that later. i'm curious
that's what i was thinking
FPS is generally lower on dslr too
but maybe it's much faster and you don't notice it as much?
Nowadays the only pro of a dslr is the battery life
yeah thats what i mean
ive never noticed a problem
Welp u know the solution time to buy a z9
for one theres not 20 photos being taken a second lol
And I’ll buy my r5ii
my dream
I’m too spoiled lol the r5 is more than enough
That’s what I have to keep telling myself or else I’ll never be happy
i want precapture
is it worth the extra 1k+? no
Well better AF too and blackout free viewfinder and stacked sensor
Worse low light performance tho slightly
R5 can’t follow a bird taking off
But that’s unrealistic of me to wish for I think
Not many cameras can do that
you underestimate top cameras lol
r5 could 5 years ago for some people
I prob haven’t discovered the secret
I couldn’t even get a bcnh taking off in focus lol
Skill issue
My poor ass trying to do bird in flight video on old hardware kek
People have been doing it for many yeara so why can't I? Not a problem if it's super difficult
Worse after like iso 10k
They're good for different things
yea all the pros who do sport photography dont need that cropping power
so 24 is fine for them
and that's who canon listens to
It crops pretty well tho. I've spent a lot of time comparing the files and it's closer than you might expect. I think the R1 just has some different sensor/processing tech going on
I know it uses different moiré filters and a different sensor layout with quad pixel AF and stuff
Not sure what exactly the secret sauce is but it's good
Looks more like what I'd expect a 30mp file to look like
yeah it definitely takes some practice
it's def achievable with older tech, just much harder. what you don't see in the photos is the set up people have, which is usually a semi controlled environment, deliberately placed perches for an easier time predicting where the bird is going to aim for when coming in for a landing, etc.
Cool
I only used it like twice and I havent even culled yet because I got distracted by other hobbies but it kinda works
bigger birds I prefer evf but tiny fast birds like swallows I think are easier with it
This is actually kinda smart lmao
Someone should make a tele lens that has rails
I could prolly sell aftermarket feet for popular lenses
effort tho
hard to sell a 3d printed part for decent money even if its well made and a cnc alu part with these dimensions and geometry would be too expensive
I could make it only a rail and no handle and it would be cheaper but I wouldnt wanna use a tele without a carry handle
Hot shoe maybe?
hot shoe dot sights already exist ttartisan has one for $60
kinda crappy mount tho not rigid enough
I had the ttartisan and decided I liked it but not how it used the hotshoe so I returned it and bought this airsoft dot sight for $40 lol
Manufacturers really just need to include some sort of universal mounting option on lens collars or something
Lots of possibilities there
i bif'd: #🖼・photo-sharing message
all just practice. there's no particular shot i like that much. trying to compose with a flying bird is hard.
those r super nice
going through the archives (its too cold to take anything new)
weak nikon user
He does not represent Nikon user at large
Honestly I never think about composition with BIF, its just spray and pray and hope u have enough pics with the bird fully in frame
Can't have bad composition if your background is just sky lol
yea, i live a 10-min walk way from the east river. there are always water birds there, so it's a great spot for practice.
yea, that's what i was doing, heh. just hold the shutter down.
I got a titmouse eating eeee
they are so cute
It's a video so I'm not sure if I should pull a still from it or what
more birbs: #🖼・photo-sharing message
yea central park birds are super friendly
i didn't know that cardinals ate out of people's hands
borb
The common perchers will go for hand seed if given the chance
I want to try this with chickadees and a 35mm
Wow very nice
Holy pose
Guys
Theres a flock of around 30 waxwings in a city only 30m away from me!!
Will go see them on saturday if they stay there
Damn
I hope you will get some good shots
Thanks, not sure how close I can get to them but we'll see
Even just seeing them would make me happy, theyre pretty high up on the list of birds I wanna see
Lets try
my first hawk shot. a red-tailed hawk. not the best shot but i'm so excited to get my first hawk shot.
as y'all can tell, i'm really enjoying my new lens, heh.
100-400 on a crop sensor is a ton of fun
Sick
I love when branches are actually helping to frame the subject instead of hiding it, nice job
Many of my photos are just birds trying their hardest to find the most annoying places for my camera
warra evf
3d printer bc i lost the original one
If it work it's good

Ig
holy pose
but i don't pay for another one

btw i got this really insane fog and light this morning
the sharpness take a huge hit cause of this
But the shot still insane with an okay sharpness
Yeah the fog was really huge this morning but it was really fast
i need to go that lake where u got these pics of the flamingos at sunset
You talk about Vaccarès or Pont de Gau ? I go on both
If it's from this shot it's Vaccarès
yh i was talking about this

Yellow eye man
I’m not sure about them, but I’m glad you like them
I need to go looking for these woodpeckers again
Forgot I took this photo two years ago. Shot on a Lumix TZ100 compact camera with a 1" sensor. Turns out even small sensors can produce decent enough results with enough light. Too bad I wasn't much into this hobby back then so I don't have a RAW.
Looks like you sent a thumbnail, but it do look incredible indeed still lol
Woooo waxwings are still there, good chance of finding them tomorrow
Hope I'll be alone there so no 70 year old birder will be mad if I get closer than 100m lmao
It's a random image i found on google
just to show what it looks like
ah t fr 😂
il me semble*

j'ai acheté the EF IS II
next 6 days normally
idk when exactly
yes
Excited to see the photos
i'm excited too
Just got a DJI mic mini for my bird videos, gonna plant it near where I expect birds to get localized audio at super telephoto distances with minimum post work
bird
Wooooo
Niicee
Bohemian waxwings are so fucking cool
They have gotten so much rarer in the Netherlands in the past years sadly
Yup, 1st time seeing them
drove almost an hour but it was so worth it
I remember back in the day we even had one in our garden and right next to my school
Used to just watch them through the window instead of paying attention in class
Ooooh it was my 100th Lifer!
Saw a flock of like 25 rooks on my way there that was my 99th one lol
amazing idea
Oh my, so close but also so far away. For me that clipped tail totally ruins this photo. 😑
Still absolutely sick imo, the clipped tail is a bit of a shame, but not a total dealbreaker
Thanks! Probably just me being overly critical of my own work, but I can’t unsee that clipped tail.
Same thing happened to me today with the waxwings
like 3x
Got this one but the background is very mid
more of a birding day, bad photo location
Yep, I feel you… happens way too often. 🫠
Also I feel like the af was extra shitty today, can it be less accurate when its very cold?
Sensor also did some weird thing, hopefully just because it was insanely cold & windy, was photographing and then suddenly the viewfinder turned black
photos I took were black too
restarted the cam and everything was working again
Not sure but I think the cold might affect slightly. Electronics slows down and lens mechanics stiffen???
Yeah thats what I thought
just speculation
more scared the cam will break lol, never had that happen before
only happened once
poor guy lost his food lmao
Hopefully it was just onetime thing. I'm really worried about condensation when coming in from the cold if it can ruin gear too.
There was no condensation at all, just that happening 🤷♂️
I've had my cam completely crash 2 times now, both times there wasn't really a clear reason why and it worked again when pulling the battery out and in
Maybe sometimes cams are just weird like that
I have noticed that with Nikon poor connection between body and lens can cause freezing like that.
just want to say ur photos are incredible
i have the same issue sometimes on my canon camera but my camera just stops taking photos completely until i remove battery
luckily it doesn't happen a lot
Thank you so much, that really means a lot to me!
biiirb
Birds seem to fly from branch to branch way faster, and i seem way slower at tracking them lol
Maybe both our gear is slower and the birds are more restless
Thanks
Yeah got lucky haha
the birds are so sleek with barely any feather details visible that it was really hard to get them in focus
Plus the eye af rarely worked because their whole face is black lol
it's still good
got spot af bound to the button on my lens, that saved me
finally someone can relate to my dslr pain
I got an a7iv
Not even close to a dslr lmao
No I mean the spot point thing
I do not have eye af lol, I have to deal with spot all of the time
Ahhhh
Yeah lol but it worked really good
spot tracking so it just stuck to the head
I might just say fuck it and buy a r5ii
this 5d mark iv is good but man some of the missed photos pmo
Cro
Hell yeah
how do u guys edit plain blue sky backgrounds to make it more interesting?
i feel like this looks weird
yes
I play around with gradients mostly
yea i did a linear mask
but a lighter one so its not that visible
and just turned down exposure
o
how do u do it
Yes, gradients lmao
And theres a gradient tool in the exposure setting
so i use that
I dont really know how to use these things that well
Definitely not too much lol
not a bird photo but this is a fun gradient I did (probably too much?)
Nah i think its cool
Tried to break the mold and do astro-wildlife photography, with mixed results...
I think I need a ND filter
thats cool
sick!
i was trying to line a great horned owl up with the moon yesterday
but the perfect spot was blocked by a big ass tree in front of me
First picture was taken at f32 lol
give it a little less highlight in the gradient, or a little less shadow
the gradient starts feeling odd once it's too contrasty
How do you even have both a bird and the moon in focus? Composite two shots I guess?
yea u would have to expose differently for each
moon is so bright
or get a sillhouette
Fair
Also I think I'll go manual focus next time, AF was completely lost with so much darkness
i try to accentuate gradients that already exist so the edit doesn't look as forced
Looks like fringing is under control, so nice job
I need to listen to this advice more lol
sometimes my edits are too strong I think
it helps that the lens is as close to fringeless as i've ever seen
other thing i find useful is to make the flying thing move into the lighter half of the gradient
Had some pretty bad results with subject masking, chromatic aberrations can ruin it
metal bird but you get the idea
i think this looks decent the light is hitting the left side of the body
yeah, whichever direction bird looks at/flies to > add the light source
yeah, he's looking into the light
For plain skies, is it even worth trying not to blow out the sky?
Yeah, when I tried to expose for sky my subject ended up quite noisy since sunlight didn't hit it
i ettr for shots like that
usually the sky is recoverable unless conditions r super weird
Think I generally prefer a large radial gradient. Seems more natural. Second pict ^ is pretty much perfect to me.
How would a radial gradient be more natural?
It’s what I see in most of skies before I edit them.
Maybe because the sun is a point source where the gradient would be radiating from. Don’t often see anything straight in nature.
depends a lot on the focal length used
Does it? 🤷
you tell me
a radial gradient when used in concert with a long telephoto is going to look a lot like vignette
especially on a flat sky
I see see where we are talking past each other.
It wont if you use a very large radial gradient. Even if you used a telescope focal length the gradient will most likely have a slight curve to it.
I think a perfectly straight line across the image looks out of place and would look better if it had a very slight curve to it.
if the gradient is this large, one probably won't notice a curve at all
but your method would work as well
True. I see it a lot but I may be over sensitive to it because I look for it.
I usually try to put the center of the gradient where the sun would be. Sometimes that is very far away. Sometimes it’s not.
😭
counts
Bird is looking at you like "hey bro, I can sell you a 400-800 with a x2 tele"
1288mm F/16 🥶
Sharpness is still pretty good
But at this focal range, I would worry more about atmospheric haze lol
I would say f16 is still acceptable on a sunny day
But like, not a single cloud in sight sunny
You’d be surprised
Though stopping down that far is going to make everything less sharp, so it’s of limited use
diffraction will be a big issue
duck!
up close with the herring gulls today
🔥
c'est quoi?

❤️
fun crow shots in the rain
the last one is funny it looks like th crow moved its head when it got hit by the drop
bro got lost
When your gps is out of date
Guy got caught on the wrong thermal
Lol poor guy
burd
Shout
burd indeed
Why discord be compressing the fk out of photos unless you zoom in?
you are probably shown the preview until you want to see a full version
saves data
yeah ofc, I just feel like it's gotten worse
Lol on mobile you need to open in browser to see any kind of detail
I'm on desktop
unless you open the large version AND click to zoom it's compressed to all hell
it's actually saving the images as multiple different urls
if you just click the image once, and right click open it's still compressed in the browser, if you zoom in, then right click open, its not compressed
@scarlet tulip looks like i need to head over to the flushing meadows park: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L6616110/bird-list
i live in astoria, so flushing is fairly close
supposedly there is a kingfisher there
i want to photograph them diving: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_zk9g7w3sgI
A slow motion video of a belted kingfisher diving and returning to perch with two fish.
they're very difficult to get near, best bet is to set up somewhere inconspicuous near an open bare branch
they are very active and will fly to a good hunting perch, but any approach scares them
got it
lol
where this is going right now.....
soon i'm going to be in camo
carrying a z8
and a prime lens
600 or 800 not sure yet
i really like 600 so far, but that's also central park
600 plus a teleconverter does the job for most people
will 600 be enough at jamaica bay? i'll find out
you could probably convert that 100-400 if you wanted, it's a great lens
it would be cool if teleconverters you could zoom with existed
this is fairly soft. around 2000 is when i start noticing.
like a 1.4 - 2x one so you can kinda mess around with it if you smacked it onto a prime
i learned from 50-250 what a soft photo is like. and it's around 2000 i start going "this doesn't look sharp". 50-250mm at max lenght is soft.
sounds really hard to get working properly tho
wow, that's worse than i expected
like it's on the 50-250 level
how do yall do bird photos with a prime
like an 800mm prime
doesnt it get annoying whent he bird is too closee
i think a 400 2.8 paired with teleconverters migh be a good option for birbs
i haven't birded with a prime yet, so i'm not sure. i heard it's an adjustment and it takes a couple of weeks to really get used to it.
