stay safe and with a company that guides ppl around
Is that dangerous there?
Prepare for your trip to Sri Lanka by reviewing the State Department Travel Advisory, entry and exit requirements, local laws, and U.S. embassy tips.
I would hire from a company that has an office and not through some app
Ah btw @viscid quail , light leak is on some of the color photos too, just barely visible tho
Yeah, looks like barn doors
if the light leak was one consistent color, then I wouldbe worried, but it looks like a flash of incident light
Soo you think theyre out of sync somehow or is it more likely that I'm letting go of the shutter too soon?
letting go of the shutter too soon
Alright thanks, also just realized I sent this in a totally wrong channel LMAO
its ok, I forgive you
Travel advisory are bs
Based on the US, you should be afraid to go to Sweden, France, Germany, UK, Spain, etc
birbs in park
that owl looks like a college professor
Psyduck used water gun?
what kind of owl is that
lowkey ugly
i wanna see one LOL
KL bird park
barred eagle owl i think
potentially
That's still just a zoo, but exclusively for birds
Aviary sounds better than zoo for only birds
yeah but the question was if it was a park or a zoo...
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is its official name, not zoo
Luckily that wasn't the question tho
Little Nuthatch
They do get nice and close
probably the nicest quality picture i've taken with my rebel t6
50mm F1.8
this was yesterday with the 50
big crop, but sparrows are so brazen that it's doable anyway
As I’m spending more time here in Sri Lanka it’s becoming more and more apparent I need a rain cover. How are you all keeping your cameras dry?
These scruffy looking guys are everywhere. Can't go 10 meters without spotting one
this one is sick
Not totally happy with it as it's looking away. Going to try and get a better one in the coming weeks
Not keeping it dry lol
Thats sick
seems like some kind of kingfisher?
Usually I don’t, if I have to go out in a downpour, I’ll tape the mount with some tape or I’ll tape a trash bag to my lens hood
Ik this is for birds but do u guys think the beam of light I created that comes from the top right is too strong?
if u know its for birds why send it lol
Rougy the redstart is the first one to take a little bath
I have a LensCoat RainCoat
Do note that it’s not something you pair with a zoom lens unless you’re willing to treat it as a prime
But it’s excellent at the job I purchased it to do, which is to save my 500PF from getting soaked
Just get an internal zoom like the sony 200-600
🤑
Worth it tho
Still can’t zoom all that easily with the coat on it
just get an internal power zoom lens like canon 50-1000 smh
Great
All my bird photos since April last year or so on this discord are shot with it so if you wanna check just search for my photos lol
be like the broadcast dudes at baseball games lol
you got any cool pics in the rain?
The feeling when 300 mm is bit too tight. 😅 I have never seen or photographed white-tailed eagle this close.
Actually I went to photograph golden eagles and I got those, but that white tailed eagle was kind of extra and not that typical specie for that spot. When I made the reservation for that hide forecast was that it is only sunny day of our trip, but in fact it ended being the only cloudy/foggy and really dim day of the trip. 🫠
wow very nice shots
Thanks! 👋
woah
those are amazing
its quite rainy in my area rn im waiting for some birds to land in my backuard
i ireally wanna get rain shots of birds
this ones, unique lol, raw vs edit (barely touched aside from shadows)
love these moments the f/4 can just bring out detail irregardless
looks like the suns going down but its just some yellow leaves in the back i think
awesome
the king of pidgeons
let's being creative and test some
yipee i got birds in the rain for fiest time
The spectacled Eider in the Netherlands has recently been found again, after having disappeared for like 5 months. Went to see it today, hoping to catch it close to shore since it is moulting rn, was relatively close but wil go there again tommorow since it has even been spotted on shore the past week.
Still sick to think tis is the first ever in mainland europe and it's still here almost a year after discovery
awesome
Idk which one looks better
i prefer 2
tired birb
Eiders are such cool weird birds, I wish we had some equivelent in the Southern Hemisphere
I mean you guys have fairy wrens, I would trade Eiders for those any day
How many keepers do you guys usually get in an outing?
And how long is an outing usually?
really depends on what u see tbh
Yeah this, sometimes it's a 1000 pictures and no keepers. Sometimes it's 200 pictures and 4 keepers. But on average I have at least 1 or 2 shots that im actually happy with in an outing of around 2 hours
yea i think i have more keepers in the field then when i go home i realize there's something wrong with most of them
fr
usually it's something in the background lol
gotta be more aware when im looking through the viewfinder
That moment when you think you hit a banger shot in the field and you get home and it is just out of focus enough to make it unusable
ik i needed more zoom to get this anyways but i was trying to get photo of bird then plane came into frame lmao
im horrible at keeping things in frame when staring directly up
cro
also yes ik its a bit blurry but i think its still an interesting shot with the crow like mid blink
anyone know what kind of bird this is?
What region are u in? Would help to narrow it down
vancouver canada
west coast
i took it at the beach next to ocean
ok yeah I have no idea about NA birds
Had a quick look based on some species that I know look somewhat like it, but couldn't find anything
Looks like a Savannah Sparrow
i see
thanks though
ohh
that looks about right
i think thats it
its common bird in this area ig
thank you
Yeah sparrows all look the same almost, only easy one for me is White-throated
Do you have Merlin?
i think ive seen that bird before?
or is it an app
oh you probably mean the cornell lab merlin app
how were you able to capture your pfp
the storytelling... the emotion...
DDAAAMMMNNNNNNNNN!!!!
Bard
Kinda tempted to go get some pics of Swamphens whenever I see the the Pukeko memes
land birb in the city
seems like there's more chicken than other creature in the city state of Singapore
damn didnt know that
but its also not true
just that you see roosters more often cuz yeah
Yes, and 0 stray cat and dog
Keen to see what is available when I next come through singapore
bird wise of course
i wish it was a higher quality photo, but i couldnt not take it LOL
can even see a bit of blood left on his feathers from dinner
Had really low light and got grainy images so I thought maybe I just accept it and leave it there.
Well I changed my mind. It just looks better with denoise. Grain doesn't give any value to the picture not even artistic. Noise probably just leaves unfinished look to the frames. 🤔
Now that I look them I think that those frames has some potential. But these just doesn't quite meet the standards of being good enough.
i think its fun that youre up close and personal in these dramatic, almost threatening poses
normally people tend to shoot birds in a way that looks graceful and elegant since those attributes are very close to flight and how birds are built, this here is scrappy backalley will take your fucking wallet birds in a way thats different
could be a fun series because they contextualise each other a bit
Yeah there is potential and as you said these are bit different and dramatic. I shot with really wide aperture. So margin of error is narrow. If you look closely most of them has slightly missed focus and I think that denoising even underscores that.
when the theme is roughness i dont think missing focus by a millimeter here or there is gonna matter much
as long as the impact of the image feels like someone standing too close to your face in a threatening way
Good point and relieving to hear that sometimes slight imperfections are OK too. 😅
Time to go in a natural reserve for the golden hour
Stellar sea eagle my belobed
swan series
Sea eagle is arguably my favorite bird at that zoo
That reminds me of this cute fella I got a pic of at my (then) local zoo
You must of done something very Unamerican to get those stares from them
One is not mad, just disappointed
The other is not disappointed, just mad
This shot
Nice, I got a very similar one but with a swan
Weird crop tho, old photo
Would edit it differently now
what a shot
wow nice lighting
have u guys heard of the olive-backed pipit?
very common in eurasia
but one ended up in socal somehow
i am gonna go see it tmrw
this is the third time it's EVER been spotted in california
Just like the mockingbird in germany last year
5th ever in europe, 1st in germany
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an olive-backed pipit. Identifying different pipits is such a headache. 🫠
Meadow pipit from last summer.
first time I've seen a flamingo fly
at this point i'm getting more diversity at my feeder than in the woods
hoping the winter brings some of the rarer woodpeckers out, maybe i'll buy some suet
my house is surrounded by some kind of tree that makes berries birds like so theres dozens of birds its crazy
mostly robins but other birds too
the robins will get drunk on those berries once they ferment, too
what a nice background
i got a big ahh fence in the backyard which isnt ideal
pretty bird
winter should improve it some, more light from the side at sundown
the angry or offended at camera-song sparrow
theyre kind of, everywhere where they are but usually less visible with their patterns. Probably means there's bugs around and other birds which also eat the bugs
beached boat
If u guys have ebird do u mind rating this photo? I’m close to being on the home page for this bird 🙃
Lmaoo fr
Is the drivers license so insanely expensive in france too?
Paid 2700€ and took me around 5 months lol
It's start at 800€
The maximum i see is 1500€
Wtf
America it's maybe a few hundred for driving school to get it early, otherwise free (maybe like 20 bucks for the card itself)
I paid about 4k eu for mine in total
Damn so france is the one who cost less in Eu ? Crazy
Lmao yeah but you also barely learn to drive over there
I guess being able to drive whatever speed I want to makes it a bit better
Drove 190kmh/120mph in driving school lol
I mean is it really something you need to learn from a school?
Yee kinda I guess
I mean maybe not as much as its required in germany but even tho I was able to drive before I got my license, I wouldve prolly made a lot of mistakes without driving school
But even here in germany where you usually drive atleast like 25x 90mins people say you only really learn how to drive once you get your license
yea u just learn with experience
Stay still
My wife tried to give a Siberian jay a tummy rub. It wasn’t that impressed about it. 😅
what a fluffy birb
have u guys tried the new lrc culling feature?
ok it seems quite useless on non human subjects
i tried it and it crashed my lightroom
😭
how do those researches tag birds lol
i think they have pretty big nets
just net the birds?
They put up nets in spots where they know a lot of birds fly through, then check the nets every 20 mins or so if any birds got caught in it
You also have permanent ringing station, where they have permanent nets
There they also often play sound to attract birds to the area
But for particular species, stuff like waders they also have net cannons to shoot a net over the birds in order to catch them lol
dutch angle horizon :(
Lmao I can’t control the hill he’s walking on unfortunately
Speaking of the topic yesterday about catching and tagging birbs, I thought it was pretty cool that the red winged blackbirds at the sanctuary my friends and I went to came so close that I was able to see that one of them had been tagged before
which I know is not so special but considering I’ve watched many a bird catch and tag short videos, being able to see it irl and up close was pretty cool
That is cool. Some birds has big tag that are meant to be read from distance, but few times I have been able to read also those small tags from pictures I have taken. At least here in Finland we can send information on the tag to the museum of natural history and they sends back some information about the bird. 👍
This one had big tags, but it was really interesting to learn more about it. The bird was ringed as a nestling 117 days ago, so it’s one of last summer’s chicks. It was tagged 218 km (135 miles) northwest from the spot where I photographed it.
the birds on this particular trail are used to people coming there with bird food in their hands and they come
Yeah, the birds on the trail from my last photos are the same
The chickadees are super shy at first but once they found out three humans in a group all had seed, they started swarming us and even fighting over it
(Yes I know the chickadee in the back is out of focus, still love the photo anyway just because he’s so spicy)
reddish egret, now there's a sight
Lmao never saw one flying with its head extended
get a 600mm
400 is a weird in between length
You’ll soon see that even 600 isn’t enough lol
600 is perfect imo
everything large you'll get too much heat/atmosphere distortion&haze anyways
especially at temperatures higher than like 20c
the only thing 400mm is inbetween is $300 and $2000
Lmao
nah those 200mm make a huge difference
went from 300 on apsc so 450ffeq to 600 on ff
Wouldnt use 400 again ngl
This little guy has clearly been bulking up for the winter. 😅
Might have missed some leg days thou.
hi-rez chicken
why he's so chonky

orange?
Not sure, might be the angle and/or fluffed up feathers. Or maybe it just has eaten well and stored a little extra fat for the winter.
looks like a fat bird
.
that is a certified borb
so sharp
light was good for it today
editing these isn't much fun, shooting through window screen makes everything feel off
just the feeder?
almost gives it a film look
Yeah
I can see it, yeah
hmm yea i was gonna say it looks a bit hazy
quite dreamy
maybe u can up the clarity a bit to correct it?
It doesn’t do much
Then the feathers are overclarified
This is an example I don’t care much about, the background isn’t great
If I catch something on a branch I usually get better results
Saw this flock of lapwings a few days ago, pretty cool
Obviously not a good pic lmao
Kinda saveable I guess? But I lowkey dont like flock pics most of the time
Eh not as bad as I thought
u can strategically edit out birds until it looks aesthetic
I've done that before lol
reminds me of @crude kraken i think
Lmaoo yeah true
a ping in a bird thread what
i definitely did a lot of strategically editing out birds in my one bird photo yes
what kind of cormorant is that
oreo comrorant
No clue lol
I can ask Google?
Pied shag (Pied Cormorant)
very cool
Do you guys utalize bad weather for photos? I'd love to see inspiration for snowy wildlife shots. Gonna try that this time when I go to the cottage tomorrow. It's almost always bad weather in winter when I go there. Already -11
Got this last winter. I have no shots of acctualy snow in the frame
I’ll go out in rain and snow
It’s usually a good way to get photos, as long as I can get to a good spot
Snowy weather even more amazing I think
And as long as its not too dark
esp in the Winter rain / strong clouds tank the light way too much unless you wanna test your luck and shoot at 1/250th or sum
yeah this is mostly why i dont go when its snowing, finnish winters are mega dark.
Snowy weather and snowfall is great, even for action photos. 👌
Kiitos! Will try now when I go to Ruka
Don't u hate it when this happens? Super nice sun/photo but the autofocus focused on the water... 😌
Here is a redemption pic I took a few years after
Aw man that sucks that that happened/s
going back through old files from summer, turns out i saw a lifer and completely forgot about it lol
Please be sharp. Such a good pose 😍
Do u guys expose for the birds in winter or the snow? Snow is always overexposed for me
Depends, I always expose to not clip highlights
But we don't get snow here anymore so not really a problem for me
idk if im happy with these. thoughts? @wide flint
i think topaz photo ai does abit too much with the noise reduction. i tried to lower it but still looks kinda bad. used 4000iso cause bad sunlight
hhmmm yeah kinda looks like on the first 2 you pushed the crop too far for the amount of noise and pixels you have
but poses are nice
here is the original i dont think i pushed too far. i was pretty close @wide flint
i think the 4000 iso kinda ruined it, shot wit ha 7d mark 2
oh damn yeah idk then
4000 iso should clean up way better with topaz
also a little tip with topaz, you can select only the background to give it some extra denoise, normally helps quite some bc the background doesn't look unnatural as quick as the subject when denoising
oh u can? im currently learning editing. i learned photography before editing cause i really hate editing lol
yeah you should be able to select what you want to denoise somewhere
and the automatic selection in topaz works well 90% of the time
i also used a tiny bit of motion blur preset in topaz since i shot handheld and 800 shutter speed with a 5.3kg 600mm f4 lens so the picture was just a tiny bit blurry @wide flint
lens blur i think its called
u think the lens blur preset is ruining the photo? @wide flint
Do you have lightroom
poor guy getting @'d 4x in 45 mins lmao
sorry
were friends on discord tho so its fine, stork is a really nice guy haha
nope, i use on1 pro max, i hate subscription apps
have never used that tbh so idk, but it's probably not helping
how big of a crop was that
ah i shouldve read down
ill printscrejen and show u, it wasnt too big i think.
is this too big of a crop? im not sure tbh lol @left brook
@daring imp
Quick little edit, did nothing special in topaz except lowering the automatic sharpening a bit. Other than that just did vibrance, saturation, exposure and all that jazz. I added a graduated density filter from the top right to brighten it up a bit
looks much nicer! only thing thats annoying is the over exposured snow :c thanks!
Holy shit I just found out about the creepiest looking bird ever
dont u have an r6 ii
yea it needs to be denoised
Yeah! But I don't like using it with the older 600mm f4 lens. Camera becomes way slower and had some af issues sometimes
I really need a telephoto rf lens for my r6 😌
moved one of my feeders, now i can shoot through glass instead of window screen
it's not perfect, but it looks fine since i can just add some sharpness and downscale
it honestly gives a nice natural haze
Not a bad look, I agree
Just have to be judicious with the curves and the dehaze
you can see the double-glass effect in the defocused branch here, so i will have to be careful about isolating birds
dude i wonder how many of these i have seen
they just look exactly like regular sparrows when not breeding males
probably a good number tbh
same thing with, like, purple finches
winter can be fun for sparrows, they're just a pain to ID
starting to get the finches here, hoping for redpolls as winter gets closer
We have alot of sparrows here in finland
poor heron freezing its ass off down by the channel
awful shot because i just took it from my window but i felt bad for it
Does the water freeze?
Yes it does here in the Nordics
I’m surprised the heron hasn’t gone south
yeah but not yet
takes a while since this water is connected to the sea, lakes freeze up first then creeks and bays
this bay will definitely freeze though, its just like 80cm deep or something
Good enough to skate on?
most winters yeah
municipal workers often polish up some skating tracks on the lakes with best ice thickness
nice for me when im out shooting islands and coastal stuff because i get to take short cuts across the ice to better viewpoints
Nice of them to track the thickness for everyone
Probably saves them from doing a few rescues every winter
Also, what’s the tripod/head setup you use for the 500?
Handheld this time but normally i use it on a set of benro tortoise legs with a level base and then a leofoto 2-way head called VH30R or something
Its a normal tilt head but with double rotation bases, one at the bottom and one at the top plate
I use that for everything big/serious, sometimes i bring one of my smaller travel tripods instead to save weight but for the 500 i try to use the big one
I also have a tiny groundpod for the 500 which i made from some gimbal legs and a smaller cheap tilthead from amazon, just for low ground photos of animals or islands
Quite the size but its rock steady shit which is quite nice at 500 or 700 as you probably know
That head seems nice, it’s not off-axis like some
Its perfect for me, havent used the ballhead since
Which makes me question why i have an expensive nice ballhead but it is what it is
Perfect really, you can use it as a gimbal-like following setup too if you unlock the tilt joint and one rotation piece
Most of the time i shoot anything living i just handhold but theres been times where i set up and sat and waited or whatever
Then i do that so it moves freely but has a weight rest/support and wont barrel roll or whatever
This is good info, thanks
I’m reconsidering my aversion to big heavy lenses, f/5.6 is getting tiresome
The level base on the legs is quite necessary for it to make sense, thats the only thing that can go wrong
Right, since otherwise it’s out of balance
Stiff base and tilt head will be leg adjustment hell forever
Yeah
This is cheaper all in than a Winberley, which is good news
I could see myself setting it up at the back window for better feeder shots
Pretty perfect for that yeah
You dont really need built in level base legs either, there are middle sections that you put on any legs that just give a bowl joint
Adds bulk but thats it
Not a bad idea at all, then
It’ll be between the Z 400/4.5 and an old 500/4 then
500PF was a mistake in the long term
yeah how come?
purely from aperture limitation or just because its not optically all the way there for shit like TC use?
the PF's are awesome but nothing really fucks with supertele sized glass in image quality if you by some miracle can afford it
Optically it’s excellent
But it’s actually quite long, to the point that I can miss shots up close, and it’s slow
It becomes problematic if I go in the woods, or I want any kind of action shot, at dawn or dusk
A 400/2.8 would be ideal, but I want to move entirely over to Z and the new one costs more than my car
Me with my 500 7.1
I also find the focus motors in the F glass to be less responsive than I’m told the Z lenses can be
yeah this is kinda the case across the board
Have seen theorization that the adapter actually underpowers old lenses a little, which would cease to be a problem with native glass
because my 500 is so old, the autofocus is gimped anyway
its ok on its own, its garbage with the extender
point case earlier
the camera was like yep, got it
Weirdly enough the PF does alright with a 1.4
“Contrasty enough let’s go”
Do u have the 500 f4 v1?
500 F4 IS V1 yeah
Nice
heres a 100% crop with it normally, without the TC
nothing wrong with the lens
just something about the TC makes autofocus adjustments chaotic
its especially egregious in servo, not sure why
heres a 1,4x shot at 700mm F8 which is quite good still given the age, also 100% crop
so it doesnt degrade to shit, but it becomes unreliable to a point of great annoyance
the amount of separation is fantastic though, even if the subject isnt huge in frame
The PF is deadly sharp bare
And good enough with the extender
Just, good luck in the forest when it’s cloudy lol
the stabiliser on my tele is pretty bad since its so old
when its extended it of course gets worse since you extend all movement by punching into the image
using it at 700 with a shutter anywhere below like 1/1000 is pretty catastrophic
F5,6 is cool at that length but you still need a fucking lot of light when the shooting rig is both huge/heavy and has shitty IS
On an R5 I don’t even know if I would want the extender that often
You basically have a free crop sensor built in
yeah
ive also (this is kinda silly) debated on selling the extender and buying an R7 lol
You end up with a sniper rifle
i see them drop into local pro markets trade-in now and then for like 7-800 euros with full tax papers
buying one for wildlife stuff would genuinely be cool
R7 and 100-400 II is insane together, and R7 with 500 unextended would be pretty sick too
yeah and a 32mp output is quite nice for stuff that isnt deadly serious, plus fucking around with an 800mm equiv would just be fun really
its not a high priority money wise but i think once i get the boat project running and start spending more time doing that, ill probably do that too for fun
That runs right up to where atmospheric stuff starts getting involved
But on cold mornings? Wow
it does, and ive noticed this when using 700 that there are times where its just not viable
This is the time of year where long lenses get fun, thanks to the cold
That and snow can up the amount of light coming in
Ppl say wait for r7 ii
I heard AF on r7 is a bit buns
people have no idea what R7II will even be so idk why they would say that
afaik we dont know for sure there will be one at all
but it seems likely
I have top secret insider knowledge that r7ii will be better than r7
r7 af is usually fine but it doesnt like some ef lenses
fuck electronic shutter
as long as i have a mech ill just never use it, idc if my readout is 4ms
yea i guess it depends if u r doing a ton of action
also there is a bit of shutter shock on r7 for mechanical
i even noticed it on my r5
weird, i shoot in the sensitive span for like 80% of my landscape shit and have never ever seen any effect of it
yea it's like super slight
i zoomed into like 300%
and compared with eshutter
but for landscape def not noticeable
i mean more for like close up portraits of birds
here's my test
clearly not a big deal unless youre ocd
500% and 400%-ish
theres nothing here
yea i mean i mostly use eshutter for fps
i'll prob use mech when i go see the northern lights
I know I overedited it but like..... I tried 😭
I'm new to photography and editing is difficult :(
did u mask the ducklings
to me it doesnt look overedited but the lighting looks slightly off possibly due to masking
idk it just looks like it's glowing a bit
cute photo tho
i guess those are goslings not ducklings oops
are you in the US?
i hvae a ton of canadian geese in a park next to me i wanna visit them when it's breeding season
goslings ig
New Zealand lmao
oh i guess breeding season is diff then
My dad has the R7 and 100-400 and it's a great combo. Love how light it is compared to my Z8 and 180-600
For me the e-shutter is nice for raising FPS and removing blackout
You use it a lot?
Dang. Z63 just like that
If I needed to shoot in weird LED light I would use the mechanical shutter
That’s its best use
lucky r5 still has blackout shutter unfortunately
The e-shutter doesn’t remove the blackout?
nah
well like the screen doesnt go black but you see the images that youre taking
so youre always like 1 frame behind real life
but in the r5 mark ii u see the live view the whole time
no blackout is life changing
i can live without it since for birding i mainly use my dotsight anyway
for like BIF
dotsight is like one step above no blackout
This shit is so horrid
It’s worse than just having black frame
Had that really bad on Z6ii
How to activate e shutter
might be called silent shutter on ur camera
idk nikon tho
I always felt like it wouldnt be accurate enough to keep the bird in frame & keep af on it, is it actually good?
in my experience, its a double edged sword
its excellent for tracking
Imagine having viable e shutter
||
||
just make sure to zero properly for the range you are looking to shoot
Yee makes sense, I'd hate not being able to properly check af, even tho it should work 98% of the time with wide tracking as long as the bird is visible
Still amazed by the a7iv's bird af, cant believe newer bodies are even better
its not good cause the body can lock onto the bg and you can get a whole series of bg shots
but the solution is to prefocus near and let the af rack to the bird
its good for BIF where tracking is paramount
ill figure it outsome day
Not sure if its worth using with your cam, apparently has pretty slow readout speed too so you get tons of rolling shutter if the subject isnt stationary
Just like my wonky ahh sony
o
It’s just there as shutter type then you can choose between mechanical efc and electronic
Some are greyed out sometimes based on lens or shutter speed
But yeah your readout is pretty slow, might not be best for any birds
Where is your source of readout times?
many sites say that it's around 50.5 ms
which is not ideal
even 14 gives me wobbles from time to time
my brain
Table of camera image sensor readout speeds
lol it's listed as 111ms for photos
I am too
rip lmao
O
I se
corrected version (the old version have eyes badly aligned)
Amy good spots for kingfishers in Southern California?
what part of socal
i know a place that has belteds there like every morning
in san diego
check ebird in your immediate area
Seems to be a decent amount of sightings at Bolsa Chica so I'll just keep going there I guess
yep ive seen them flying around
san elijo lagoon in san diego
they chill on the telephone poles
and sometimes fly around to fish
A little too far for me
yea
if u live near bolsa chica keep going there
i dont think there's a better spot to see most stuff near here tbh
Yeah it's been the best spot I've found so far. Only about 40 minutes away which ain't terrible
yea that's pretty good
san joaquin in irvine is nice too
sometimes it's harder to get a close view of the birds since the ponds r so huge
recent bolsa chica excursion
Yeah I quickly came to that realization
I'll probably go tomorrow
i saw so many herons/egrets lol
tricolored, little blue, reddish, snowy, great egret, great blue
Oh yeah they're everywhere
was happy to see the little blue
and tricolored
but tricolored was so far away
only had one chance to catch the little blue flying away and thankfully autofocus didnt let me down
I got lucky with the tricolor being close enough
I see a bunch of them at this one spot in Newport bay
My only gripe with Bolsa chica is getting a good composition
i agree a lot of the mudflats r so low
u r looking down on them
u can't get good pics of the ducks either
i saw a cool bufflehead but i was too high up to even attempt a good angle
honestly in flight shots r the only thing u can rlly get LOL
Yeah...
have u ever seen a california condor
Getting eye level is a challenge but I seen this guy chilling on the rocks and was able to get a decent composition
Yeah lighting was nice and soft
No I haven't
There's also one tree where all the egrets go at sunset
It's funny to see them all flock over there
U could get pretty close to them but the angle might be off and lighting is impossible for me
yea looking back at it both times i went the only keepers i have are in flight shots
Yeah most keepers from that place are just action shots
Had to climb down some rocks by the bridge and the oil thing to get this shot
Probably not doing that again
Very unsafe but worth it
keep seeing this duck hanging out with the neighborhood gaggle at the local pond 😄
Saw a kingfisher yesterday but it was just out of reach 😭. 1 day I'll get lucky
The only rime i saw a kingfisher upclose was a dead one :(
Got hit by farm equipment in india
What a chance to see this natural show ❤️
A whole flamingo flight an i think this was the largest i've ever seen and this will keep being bigger
It makes me so happy that you also took a moment to look at it through your eyes as well as taking photos ofc
That was so impressive i needed to live the moment not just for photos
Yeah
I'm going ona nature reserve with a lot of birds and I'm new to photography but has anyone got pointers for bird photography? My "best" lense for this is a 55-200mm lense 😭
i would recommend at least 400mm
or else u have to get pretty damn close
The birds here are okay with getting like 2 or 3 m often closer to 6 - 8m away
Oop 😭
general consensus is that 600mm is ideal wildlife / birding length
u might be ok then
for larger birds u have a chance
Is that 200mm on a ff or apsc body
these were back when i only had a 70-200 2.8 on my ff camera
not the best but also not terrible
Maybe if I had like 1200mm of reach I could get a decent picture but it was just wayy to far away to get any good angle. Till next time
Now you know where he sits so setup a hide and wait
I can't, it's too far. No access near it. There are plenty of other Perches around tho
There's a lot of tits now
Is this the best birding lens of all time??
Lmao how’s the autofocus
I wonder if it would be usable on an r1
This guy claims to only use a smartphone and his spotting scope for birding. What do we think?
https://www.instagram.com/thecronicbirder?igsh=dmNtem9xcmUxNHdm
Maybe not bullshit
There’s some masking and selective blur happening here
Seems plausible. Especially here
Are they saying they're shooting with their phone cam through the spotting scope?
but yeah pictures do look like they're taken from a phone through the scope
its been months since i took a bird photo but decided to try today 😭 bit rusty
I like the second one
tiny bird lots of drama, bit of a surprise rather than a photo but nice to see
very vocal sphere
common but always shiny
tomorrow i'll go shot the kingfisher in a rainy day and maybe with fog
that will be fun
Yeah I'ma go see if I can get a better belted kingfisher picture tomorrow
here i only have the common kingfisher but otherwise we have flamingoes
we can't have everything
Here we go it's now time to wait
Is kingfishering done through just setting up a perch and then they'll get curious and perch on it?
Mostly bc they are really fast and scared of any humans
Ye lol
And tons of patience
I was mad unlucky, took me around 35 hours to get my 1st good photo, 40+ for one I was really happy with
All that over the course of a year
Holy guh
I remember those countless hours spent for nothing you sent a while back that was some crazy lack of luck
Yupp, stupid unlucky
I remember how insanely often I saw them, never got a good photo
Now I see so many when just walking around without my cam
saturday I saw one while walking through a park with my girlfriend
Weirdly enough, the spot where I got the good photos I also spotted them while walking there with my gf first
Seems like she just summons them
Well no kingfisher today but some ducks in the rain
is this the ef version 1?
That DOF is non-existent
@leaden bridge I thought you’d appreciate this top tier bird chat
Bro got her dropping her panties by mentioning Great Tits and Boobies
Insane
Rain proof?
Yeah
When locked on its insane
Paid 0$, I borrow it from time to time of my school
For reference this is how it looks when focus is achieved properly
Wow that’s rlly good for an older lens
Kinda interesting how they made an RF 100-300 instead of another 300 prime
Apparently it sucks with the 2x tc
Which one, the 300 or 100-300?
I heard it was pretty good with tcs
This picture was one of a goal of mine for this summer. But I had to use Abit of sharpening in topaz ai because they were quite far away. Is it still a good picture? Im kinda sad it was far away. Wish I was closer
It’s a pretty nice picture
86451
Lmao
Watch Jan wegeners review on it
I guess it depends on how picky u are in terms of image quality
it's a little worse than a 300 prime would be on a 2x but on a 1.4x and no tc it's plenty sharp
considering it costs twice as much as a 300 prime I think it should b a little better but the people that want that lens there's no replacement
2x is always very demanding
I seen that kingfisher again, saw me and dipped
They have that habit
seabirds
My mom and I visited my hometown last week and we visited a local marshland park
We were losing daylight when we got there so I’m semi-impressed this wasn’t a super noisy mess when I was done with it
I like the moodiness and contrast though (dunno if I’ll make the background any darker though)
I love the colors and the contrast between the bird an the water. Beautiful
So tiny and cute
Little bath
we need this as an emoji
here's a brighter one lol
i think this is one of my all time favorites so far
super clean background and nice colors
Never thought that an Anne’s hummingbird would be camouflaged but here we are
(Out of focus but for the bit)
here he is
did mf just take a dump here?
Yes, poor birds get 0 privacy...or maybe its a power move
all low key and high key i did on owls
Flat tire on my way to go photograph 😭
Those are amazing
Where did you find the owls?
They’re so weird I love them
Some in nature and some with the falconry where i work
last days with my Tamron, probably one of the sharpest shots I've gotten on it
cant wait for the sony 😀
What do ya think?
Very cool photo! I like the style but I think the aspect ratio is a bit odd but it kinda works. The signature is super disturbing though.
They're so cute but so small
Wdym the signature is disturbing? And how should I improve the crop?
Too much negative space on the left and not enough above the bird imo, otherwise nice
Oh ok. Unfortunately I don’t have more space above the bird. That’s the highest I could go. Thank you
Not disturbing as in shocking, but disturbing as in "disturbing the peace". The way it's placed and its size - it's taking away the focus from the main subject
the background is so tasty
Creamy
That's why i love my country and my region
where's this at?
ah bouches-du-Rhône
je vis pas tres loin
the purge
180 gb reclaimed
this is cheating
to shot wildlife flamingos ?
florida is unfair too
heron and egret nests on the side of every boardwalk
if u look at this dude's profile he has eastern screech owls all around him 🥲
how was your pfp taken
lol what
In wild
In small mountains near my town
This shot
The clouds are so insane
Cooper’s hawk descended from the trees to try to grab a fish (or a duck) and then flew off and landed super close
the sony 200-600 came in today, one week of bad weather left, but even now, the photos look incredible - cant wait to try it then
Hell yeah, 200-600 gang🗣️ 🗣️ 🗣️
Embrace the Bad weather, its internal zoom
this was one of the first shots i got on it
Not kidding
its really mid but the weather was SHIT
no sun anymore, dark and foggy outside, cold asf
iso 6k shutter speed under 200
i know lmao
Yee usually its so much sharper than that
ofc
but even that is as sharp as some of my sunny tmaron shots
tamron*
i feel bad saying that because the tamron is still a great lens honestly
still remember the feeling when i first got it, literally can put myself in my head back then
Love my 200-600 so much
No way I'll ever get rid of it, even if I ever get lucky enough to have the money for a 300 2.8 or even 600 4, I'll prolly always keep the 200-600
Thank you
how long have you had it for?
and what do you use for storage?
Around 1.5 years I think
rn its sitting in its bag that came with it in my closett
okay okay
im hoping tomorrow i can take some nice shots with it
gonna be home 2 hours before sunset
see this tho?
Yeah I got it in may last year
I just have it sitting in my shelf
no bag?
may what?
Beginning
Ah the exact day was like 13th or something? Cant remember, thats when I got the 1st photo with it saved in my drive
Nah
For Transport I got a rollei fotoliner m or something like that
Backpack
oh okay
3 days late
anyways
i've wasted all of my money lmao
no budget
and i want a tripod
and a tent
:-(
@gilded yarrow what oss mode would you use for your bird photos?
1?
Tent is sick, but I use it so insanely rarely that I wouldnt buy an expensive one
Tripod is only needed if you have a tent
i have a cheap 50$ one
And yeah its just in my shelf like this lmao
brave
I also only have a cheap k&f one
Was like 80€
Its enough
Yup
mine is even cheaper but thats fine
Always got the lens foot on so it cant just roll off somehow lmao
as long as it still works
i can see yeah
Ye, depending on how sturdy or not sturdy it is I wouldnt keep the cam on there without holding it tho
its sturdy enough
i dont do videos anyways
and especially with this new lens im never gonna use it without a strap around my neck
you never know
idk i have uhh peak design slide i think its called
yea same
When walking long distances I keep mine around my neck/shoulder
otherwise I just hold it by the lens foot
Keep in mind that you need to put the strap on the lens too
Not the body
movement
yeah its on the lens
on my body i have the sony one that came with the a73
so i have to take it off soon
i have 2 straps basically lmao
Lmaoo
Get more anchors
Shouldnt you have two more anyways?
the slide comes with four of them
yeah yeah i do
so where should i put them?
on the body then?
also do you do any video on the 200-600, too?
Two on the body two on the lens, that way you can always use the strap even when using other lenses
On my body I got one on the top left and one on the bottom when using it
And I got anchors on all my other cameras too lmao
Got one Video somewhere, lemme see if I can find it
would love to see it
what other cameras do you have?
and thats good to know, thanks
Analog cameras
Analog hasselblad, Fuji and another one which is a bit less known
did u see a7v
is it out yet
Yup
10th of december
might upgrade next year, looks promising if sensor readout is good enough
New af, 33mp partially stacked, 30fps and pre capture
basically ideal wildlife cam
2.9k starting i saw
