This was the phone shot lol, I was about 4 ft away, pretty aggressive to everyone else but they tolerated me
Look what just arrived in my home for my photo exhibit (2 more will arrive soon)
Local sandhill crane, at a wetlands in central Florida.
300mm f5.6 1/500 iso 160
That's awesome, I like the kingfisher
I am positive thats a borb
10/10 observation. It is in fact a Lanky Boi Borb
I was out photographing smol birbs today, came across a fat lookin one tho, buddies been hoggin the meals all winter
Bird people, how clean is ur glass, is it like 10/10?
I use a blower on the front element like once a week
Telephotos don’t really show dust in images unless it’s on the rear element, so I blow that off a bit more frequently
What about smudges, or even smudges you can only see under a direct light (not a lamp)? Do u just leave that
if it becomes annoying i'll clean it, there's no hard and fast rule
I have like what looks like lines from wiping (oil?) but its only visible under my iphone direct flash sooo.. whatever..?
I dont think it would actually do anything
I always use my lens hood so it's pretty spotless
microfiber every once in a while
goose 2
this is what i mean when the f/4 blows out the background, idk ive always loved flat bokeh as well as the spheres
can make out the background more with the zoom, these two are prob my keepers of that day (teeth goose seems to scare some people)
some people? are you telling me there are people who aren't freaked out by this?! 😂
they did this to everyone else walking by, to me i just sat right next tto them and maybe they nibbled my coat to see what i was lol
no bites
guess theyre friendly enough if on the same level as them, they didnt like the people standing up near them, or people with dogs
On Monday I'm going to a falconry event, it will allow me to test the Sony 200-600mm on subjects in flight
I'm writing a short documentary about the birds of my region called "Les Ailes du Sud" (Wings of the South) because my region is in the south of France and contains the largest concentration of bird species in France. The goal is to show how nature is closer than we think and that sometimes it's not necessary to go to another country to see rare bird species and that they can even live very close to home.
oooh pretty
Oh damn nice job
my mom just put out some plants that they seem to like so ill try to setup a chair to maybe get them
Not my best, crop was horrendous, lil bro was to far for 400mm
Reminds me of one I have somewhere of a hummingbird, i just happened to see something out of the corner of my eye and managed to locate him with a 300 (on an aps-c sensor) but he was so far away i had to crop out about 80%
Found it
Jesus how low is that resolution
This is atrocious, I blame lightroom mobile's shitty export feature
Nope, I stand corrected. Apparently the reason I left it to vanish into the ether was that it is only a 1.5mp image after the crop 1209 square
But LR's export for some reason gave me 516x516 (or at least that's what the details said in my gallery app)
Allow me to make up for it with these birds that have more than two pixels each
so I was able to replace the legs from another shot, can anyone tell or thinks this looks fake?
ill show a close-up too
original vs the legs I used
You’d have to tell me there was a replacement job done, that’s good work
thanks!
needs a banana for scale
Baby
well yeah, but it is kind of flying towards me. 😄
Threw this guy in general photo share, but thought he was majestic enough to deserve some love here too
borb
Little guy looks kind of excited what is about to happen next. 😅
But then it slipped and fell off from the females back. 😫 🤣
Grebe has nothing to worry about...sometimes it happens even to best of us. 😄
better luck next time, guy
Happens to the best of us, we all need to learn through experience
cute falconet
Nice shot
Yeah he's cute but it's a speed beast
+400km/h in bullet flight
The reason why they have it they saved him of an very injured wing he can fly but very hardly
He can do normal flight but not bullet flight
Poor parrot
YUMMY TASTE

Barn owl are so beautiful
But the sound they make is insane
Those sisters was abandoned by his mother and one of them was injured in the fall
It's not really wildlife birds but the reason of it is fair
orignal vs final
i love those king on edits with owls
birb
Never taken a photo of a seagull before 😂 best part of vacations is going to places you don’t normally have access to
That eye is incredible
thanks it was hard to recover the pixels and data in the eyes
Eiders are fun like that, they’re very streamlined for diving
Northern wheatears are back from winter trip to Africa.
that bird is rly cute
Yes it is. It is called kivitasku here and literal translation is something like stones in the pocket. Probably because it sounds like hitting two stones together.
Also it nests in rocky places where is some gaps between rocks and big stones.
Nice to see the adaptation to the habitat. Here in the Netherlands they mainly nest in the dunes in abandoned rabbit holes. Sadly bc rabbits are doing bad in the Netherlands the Northern wheatear is also doing bad here
I think they prefer wide open areas and not forests here as well. That is really interesting to hear that they nest in old rabbit holes there. But sad to hear that they are in trouble both rabbits and wheatears.
Florida Scrub Jay decided to check my hat out while I was at the sanctuary a little north of my house.
I was photographing him in the tree and he swooped down to see if the button on the top of my hat was a delicious as it looked, he seemed to decide it was not actually edible.
"hmm that's a good spot here" ahh bird
He stayed on my head for a little while, eventually I started taking cautious steps just to see what he would do and after I moved about 15 feet, I must have strayed too far from where he wanted to be so he left
brave bird
Corvids can be super personable, neat
And they're so clever... definitely not a group of birds I would want to offend
They will start crapping on your porch and leaving little gifts
The lost little baby goose got adopted
Okay best spot ever
Meh, these spots are great for birdwatching but 99% of the time they suck for photography
not at all
i've made good shot
The Birds are too far away and youre too far above them most of the time
on this one ducks, swans, gulls and even buzzards come really close
even bee eaters
ofc it's far and it can be better on other places but this one is really good and this spot is just one to a huge place of forest full of sparrows
From that pic I think we got a different perception of what really close actually is lol
yeah it's far but it's good enough to make good photos
I enjoy those spots too tho, even if its just for seeing new lifers
yeah
but this lookout is nothing when you see what it have around
there made some spot adapted for hiding net and custom lookout
Friday i go on a natural reserve at 6am to have a good light
nice
so cute 🤩
they're my favorite spring visitors, such puffballs in the cold
i like that cold looking birb
first real photo of a kingfisher, just a wee bit out of focal length
found this beauty too but got screwed over by a branch and it flew off before i got a decent angle
Today’s kingfisher
not the branch lol
Never even heard of one of these before but apparently this is a royal spoonbill
Yeah they are pretty common here but they have a quite funny beak
I took a roadkill squirrel to my birding spot just to see what would happen. I thought a crow or a magpie would come and take it away to eat. But it's still there, and now small birds are harvesting its fur to use as nesting material.
That’s wild
My wife didn’t exactly appreciate it when I showed her what I had picked up from the roadside. 😅
another shot from that day
Today i go to a crocodile reserve with some tropical birds like scarlet ibis
this eye is insane
any crocs?
they are related to things that became birds
ofc there is
yappale watch
thoughts on this shot ?
this was around a Canadian goose nest while kayaking except the goslings are hidden from the shot
i feel the water is so minimal it might as well be cropped out
maybe even wide like this
its got good symmetry
so do you think like a post edit of the shot here could be just cropping out the water entirely ?
how little/much you edit is up to you.
-# but I would say the water doesnt add too much considering where its cut off and Im distracted by the blown-out highlights in the bottom-middle
Actually it's a galaxy watch 4 ☝️
o
what does thy think of my eagle catch shot
Good shot but feel sad for me for the right wing you don't have it all but it's not that bad
yeah its unfortunate
So what about mine ?
i like all buy the yellowed eye idk what cuz the bg is not that clean
still nice though
It's the normal color on this one and wtf nature why it's so big
And for the background i wanted to make the contrast between the large color of this bird
Same resolution but 1st is exported with quality 60% and 2nd 100%. Specially on bc and fc lots of jpeg artifacts on lower quality. But there is big difference in file size as well top quality is almost 5x larger. 😵
difference is not that visible on preview. Have to open on browser.
I'm trying to change my mind set when exporting photos to use quality needed not always best there is. But I really don't know where to draw the line.
80% or 90% should be fine
yep, even 80% file size is less than half of 100%. And it seems to be almost as good as 100%.
for me i export on 100% (i have a lot of storage) and for social media i export in 85%
What about resolution? Do you always use full res pictures?
I almost always limit resolution, but that is also something that I haven't found clear pattern yet. But often I use 2000 px for short edge.
i put it in max mode for me for almost all of them
Depending on how much I crop, but lets say 30-45mp for regular viewing pictures on normal screen feels bit over kill for me. But checking them on lightroom with 100% zoom or lager is great fun.
yeah true
if it helps, i opened both these on browser and flipped back and forth, they look basically identical to me. only thing I can see a slight change in is the background banding. viewing from 1440p
I always export jpg at 80% and down sampled to 5000px on the longest edge
if I want a higher res and higher quality copy in the future I'll just re export from the raw
I really like the lightning
nuthatch, kinda been on a hiatus lately but think i mentioned leg pain awhile back? been some time seen a doctor and its a foot injury but wont stop me lol, might take a bit of a break on the photography stances though esp with the 500 f/4, think it was stressed and maybe that made it worse, shoes i dont think helped either. It can go away luckily, just needs time, called plantar fasciitis
just might not go on the 8hr long journeys lol
thanks, might have to get shoe inserts or something, dont think id just give up a hobby or anything like that. Just might be a bit harder to get out as often lol
@hardy fox
dayum
owl eyes are so goofy and funny
Found this in my library; took it in 2017 with what I think was my Nikon P600.
This red bellied woodpecker was going OFF on the cardinals 😂
Smew males looks so cool, but sadly this seems to be always closest I can get to them. 😫
Skittish?
Holy shit what a gorgeous buzzard
Way too far away but still lol
Lol wtf, black Woodpecker just flew past my window
2nd wtf bird, osprey from my window lol
Owl but too far away 🥲 is it possible to crop all the way or no?
Or will image be too soft?
Seems pretty dang far away
And the face is also pretty much completely hidden by the shadow
Wouldnt be a good picture anyways
Yes and location is really difficult. It is also only migrating through.
Yup it was super far. But they live here so ill come back alot
Is it a short-eared owl?
I think that it is short-eared owl if you photographed it in Finland. Barn owls doesn't live here.
Little ringed plover and severe case of heat haze. But is it nice effect or did I just get a blurry photo?
The way the background is effected is pretty cool
forgor to post here too
I went to a zoo six months ago and am still slowly going thru the backlog every time I feel like editing something
I also have pics from a vacation a year and a half ago I need to edit but I lack the motivation lmao
the eyelashes are pretty striking
Details are awesome. Photographing at the zoo is fun, but it's not as easy as it might seem.
At first glance dunnock is nothing special just grey and brown bird. But when looked closer I think it has pretty nice plumage.
yea high contrast
Yeah some birds have classics colors but the contrast on it is really good
Today's water birds.
What kinda grebe/diver is the first species?
Those are red-necked grebes. Those sing so beautifully that it is like music to ears. 😅
They seem willing to get close to the shoreline as well
Yes, they've been nesting next to the local boat pier for at least the past six summers. I believe it's the same pair every year, so they're quite used to people by now.
I did an insane thing today
I'm working now for a falconry and they allowed me to do this
Yoooo thats sick af
yeah it's insane and we go for a walk to take photos of thems
and for the work i made for clients packs of photos with a video for them (start at 50€)
and i also go with the falconry in city to cover their events
in this chat we get the pictures for free
Too cheap
Others would want like 500 for photos + video
For the start kit it's only 2 photos and 30s video
And here it cost less
So I’m out taking photos right and this couple walks by with parrots on their friggin shoulders
Glad to see the harnesses!
Yeah, they were so cool
Lmao wtf, wild cormoranth that decided to live at a zoo
Blud found the ultimate infinite food glitch
meet Hibiki the barn owl from the falcorny
She is very playful and curious and loves to stand on people's heads
barn owls r my fav here's some pics I got at a raptor show
yeah they are so cute fluffy babies
now meet Kotchoum the Siberian Eagle Owl
he is very calm and often when he goes out he stays on a branch and observes us for a long time
The difference with the French Eagle Owl is that it has more white plumage
i’ve never seen them with their wings out
they look so skinny
Zoo so only counts 50% but damn I'm really happy with that pic
you don't have natural reserve ? theres only in zoo ?
Yeah they dont live here in germany haha
and for ppl who says "zoo is cheating☝️ 🤓" it's just an opportunity to see birds we never see and in some country there's a controlled protocol for their health
come here we have a lot of different flamingos

Still looking for a place for summer holiday haha, might go to france
come here you will see it's really good for birds
it can be funny
rly strugging getting swallow bif
when theyre closer to me than this I cant keep em in the viewfinder lmao
they fly like lunatics
here wild flamingos are not scared of humans so you can get really close to them
(you can feed them in hand if they trust you)
Loool thats what I'm trying too rn since theyre back
pre capture wouldnt help me with this I need aim assist
This is the closest one I got so far
Still meh
Also saw one sitting for the first time today
I have a lota sitting pics from when it started raining a bit and they chilled out
the closed i've got
this day there's a lot of heat haze
and the best shot i got in flight
btw one day i found a weird egret
I searched websites for the reason and in fact this particular egret actually has an error in its genetic code
what makes his plumage very thick and gray
whats it supposed to look like
Is it leucistic?
like that
Many people think that's it, but others talk about as if there was a mixing of DNA with another species
Yeah looks like a leucistic grey heron so maybe heron x egret? Lol
he is closely monitored by the LPO (a sort of animal police)
you caught a shiny
fr
her DNA was identified as a egret with no trace of heron DNA
in any case the shade of color is very beautiful
🍊
orange birb
Meet Rosbeef the peregrine falcon, the little chatterbox of the group, he is very expressive and often shows his excitement by opening his wings upwards
they are pretty common here
33mp is great
Zoo birds and wild starling which let me get pretty close
Nah sadly not
Lol yeah the only colorful birds we got are kingfishers and bee eaters lol
wait like really ?

Yeah not even kidding
nah bro wtf
Well pheasants are colorful too but the only really vibrant birds are those two
come live here you will became insane lmao

i can't count the numbers of colorful birds we have here
this is what i have in my region :
European Bee-eater
Common Kingfisher
European Goldfinch
Hawfinch
European Roller
Eurasian Golden Oriole
European Green Woodpecker
Ahh yeah we also got green woodpeckers and goldfinches, hawfinch too but barely ever see them
Apparently theres orioles too but I have yet to spot one
they are really common here
common as a blue tit for example
The rarest thing I've seen so far is the purple heron, it's magnificent in rusty orange color
If you come to France, you absolutely need to go see the Camargue reserve (the largest reserve of france), there are so many flamingos
and you can see them extremely close (less than 1 meter)
Where on EARTH is this window?
Lmao yeah crazy weird, saw the Black Woodpecker again today
I just get ducks lmao
I want to get really nice closeup shots of birds but I keep failing so I would like some tips on technique, I track a birb and hit the shutter but it always seems to escape the frame when I am really zoomed in😔
surely the answer can't just be 'more practice' because I have been trying for months so I must be missing some technique secret
songsparrow and awkward angle kingfisher
...normally i could work with the kingfisher but that injury made it hard to get even that far lol (cliffside/slope with a fallen tree)
Well there wont be details lol
but thats more of a distance problem
Let's hope my kingfisher wasn't at 12800 iso
Kidding I know it wasn't
after a certain point modern cams are iso invariant so it doesnt rly matter if you underexposed
warblers r the best birds no bias
I really love this orange crowned I took recently
going here next week
oooh that will be so much fun
Finally black woodpecker came to visit my hide. It has been close few times but this was the first time that I could get some frames of it.
sick
finally got some decent bif iso was cranked tho as the sun was going down
catching a fly if u look closelier
Fluffy goslings already here
Figured they’d be soon, hence my pfp lol but still early
Where about? Here in the Northwest of the US we've had them for about 2 weeks now.
nova scotia in canada
theyd be canada goslings
think it was more toward the middle of may last yr
ah cool, Yeah, we've got bb Canada geese and Mallards running around currently, the first canada goose goslings we had were the first week of april this year
this was april 10, they were probably only a few days old
nice, supposedly in this spot people killed the eggs for w/e dumb reason but luckily they survived
mind you its also a natural marsh area, birds were there before the people
wow thats wild
idk what they really even do besides eat flowers lol
lots of them around here though in general about this time
ducklings probably soon too, big areas of water
Other than them eating too much grass in an area, and spreading of disease through poop im not really sure of their other negative effects
People really dont seem to like canada geese in general though cause they can be aggressive when nesting and they're so common around human areas
like, we had some pretty bad cases of avian influenza this year which primarily effects water fowl
would be wise for humans to not live next to a natural pond in any case if they dont like the following ecosystem
agree
next theyll spray for mosquitos and kill bumble bees
mhm
in my rural spot i welcomed all kinds of both irritating and nice animals/bugs and such, kinda miss that over the city sometimes lol
it wasnt just the geese either
like theres this beaver dam in the area, where theyve probably lived for years, im not sure what a beaver even does to bother a person, but someones annoyed
in this are its a park so i guess they would be protected, but people live on the upper hill part of the park which im guessing is whos complaining but the only thing would be flooding, and if theyre uphill, well, good luck to the water lol
people needa stop bothering things i think
figured something was up since my photo got rejected in a birds in the area group, my guess is theyre protecting the others from the same people (only found out really after). Usually thats exclusive to rare owls or something, lots of geese photos and such otherwise
Beautiful
South Finland I imagine?
I'm about 50mile away from ya bear/moose spotting
Thanks and I live in in Eastern/central Finland. 👋 Hope you will see some big mammals. 👍
Some shot of Hibiki (my baby ❤️ )
So far nothing unfortunately, maybe I need to go off roading? I am on the russian side so I assume it's a bit more industrial and scares em
Saw a woodpecker though and couple sparrowhawks
Lovely day though
nice
The fluffball feast is in full swing
Speaking of overkill....70,5 mp panorama bird photo. 😅
hell yeah
70mp damn just for that duck
Sometimes with prime lens subject might come too close. So on those rare cases I try taking multiple shots and stitching them in post. This was just demonstration that it is possible with relatively static subjects. And now I'm able to print 1,5x3m picture of a duck. 😅
do it
It would be cool. But I really don't know where to put print of that size.
egg
it's a quail ?
his majesty the quail
the original birb
friendly goose
Oh hey its my cousin
wongster made me get a dot sight
I was very skeptical but it seems genuinely extremely useful for small flying birds
im glad im not the only "insane" person thinking about getting one in the background
im looking at a ttartisan model, let me know how it goes lol. Figure itd be nice on a prime
i do notice with shots like this it can be tough to see where the bird will be in a viewfinder cup, where with just my eyes its kinda easy
funny comparing it to cod but iron sights sometimes suck lol, red dot giving more of a wide view, real noticible on my telescope which basically needs it
how much is something like this?
ttartisan one was $50
Nice, might give it a try as well
Honestly does seem really helpfull with getting bif shots
heard its annoying sometimes when zooming out (also just makes sense) but thats its also just easy going for the most part
like lining it up, then thats about it
Yeah, it'd probably work best from a hide with a prime lens
im thinking of one although i mostly handhold, will give it thought
id suggest getting another that doesnt have a built in hotshoe mount
so you can use a ulanzi f22 mount to mount it to your camera
this + f22 to hotshoe mount
funny enough a certain someone in this server absolutely shits on dotsights
yea u mentioned
even though i think its wonderful for small bif
almost indispensable for kingfisher dives
I put in a solid effort trying to get swallow bif for a couple days and didnt rly get anything good and within a couple mins with the sight I got some stuff better than ive ever gotten
no magnification
aiming 750mm is a lot
once theyre out of the evf youre screwed
my af cant seem to keep up most of the time
but I take enough shots it hits eventually
im doing 1000mm sometimes, while generally successful it feels like it could be easier
another issue i get alot is the AF focusing on the background
for that you gotta prefocus close
my dot sight on my telescope works well enough, most basic red dot sight you can think of so if ican mount that might be fine
the pond with the swallows is right next to a big childrens playground and im surprised no ones confronted me yet
"hes crazy, just about birds"
i get people looking at me when i handhold the 500 f/4 since its gigantic
probably looks like a sniper
flying cigar!
I do have this but not the mount, might work with it
good thing is its kinda just well, a red dot sight, doesnt really need to get complex or anything as long as its the right kinda lock on
i can verify this one worked on the 1200mm telescope anyway
you can change the bottom part to the part i have attached
looks to be the same reversed arca thing
prob is just arca something, not sure if itd be any cheaper to buy the adapters vs tt artisan though lol
will have to check
also not sure how great it is daytime but im sure its fine, just would always be red
this is a job for a 3d printer
That sounds really tempting. Is it set somehow to mach focal length so that when bird is in that sight it is also in the frame? And how do you hold the camera steady? I assume it is not possible to lean sight to your forehead while tracking birds?
dot sight corrects for any error from not holding the camera perfectly straight so as long as the dot looks like it's on the bird you're taking pictures of the bird
Really nice background and cute bird.
and there's no magnification to the sight
Thanks- this bush has been a good spot to sit and wait
I’ll miss the yellow flowers once it’s done blooming
I basically use the sight as a wide angle ovf and spam pictures while tracking the bird with blind faith that the autofocus is focusing on the bird and not the background
So you hold it front of your face aim trough the sight and you check from rear screen that bird is in focus?
so yeah you don't have time to check focus and it is hit or miss. just like with evf
dont check the screen til youre done shooting
But really tempting indeed.
check the pics u took and be surprised how well/not well it worked
Yeah usually that window is quite narrow or small when blooming is at its peak.
idk if it'll work on a tripod since it's like an evf but handheld it's nice
The cherry trees are still good for another week, so maybe I get lucky
basically its a lot easier to track birds when you're zoomed out but then you don't have enough pixels in your photos so a dot sight gets you a zoomed out viewfinder while your lens is still fully zoomed in
I don't know how to explain this but does it work despite how far or near the subject is?
there's some parallax error based on how far away you calibrated it
since the sight is above the lens instead of in line
it's not a big diff tho
to calibrate it you point your lens at something in the distance and move the dials so the dot is on the same thing
So calibration seem simple enough. So basically it is perfect only at one distance, but tolerance given with the frame gives some room to work with subject closer of further away.
hardest part is still tracking the bird perfectly lol
it just makes it so you don't lose the bird so easily
I can imagine that it isn't peace of cake even with help of that sight.
need more practice
took 700 pics today ill cull tomorrow
wasnt that good for swallows today either they didnt fly low very often
local stores has only Nikon version (219$) and OM-system version about (135$). ☹️ 50 bucks sounded too good to be true here. 😅
from the pic it looks like the nikon and ttartisan came from the same factory
A cheap solution could be a 3D-printed picatinny tail for one’s tripod foot, and a cheap red dot one would buy for a rifle
Price is just 4x higher 🤣
That might be one solution.
Only disadvantage is that you lose the sling mount on the foot
with my sigma I think I have space to 3d print a mount that clamps onto the skinny part near the lens mount and keep it close to my face
ill do more research later to see if more premium optics made for guns are worth the effort
I think I would like a small amount of magnification like maybe 2x
Could that work, so that you start tracking with sight and then change to evf?
I think if theres time to switch then u couldve started in the evf
That sounds better. Closer bird gets then change to sight.
like my previous attempts at taking swallow pics ill raise the lens up and itll be in the evf but ill immediately lose it again since its so zoomed in
and they fly chaotically
im my honest opinion after birding for a few months now, it works throughout the range with a 200-600 if you calibrate it nicely
gonna see lots of warblers on friday idk how useful itll be there since they mostly just hop around
those are a lot easier
if you prefocus infront and then shoot bif it will probably hit since the dot sight basically almost ensures the bird is in frame
i dont use dot sight for perched since theres no point
with fast small birds i feel a dot sight is worth a try if anything
its almost impossible to track once it leaves your evf
last year when I went there was a bridge with a lotta swallows living under it so ill bring it in my bag
get a nice bif fim (bird in flight, food in mouth)
@green meadow you are on a z9 right?
Yes that's correct
then the AF should be fine, even if far away you can still use the dot sight so long as its calibrated right
cause of parallex i generally calibrate to around 20-30m and it should be roughly there for any range
OK I'm convinced. I need one of those. 😅
my cam has great subject recognition but the actual af speed lags behind a little if the bird is flying too quickly away or towards the cam so most pics will be outta focus
unless its far to the point you cant see with the dot sight... but at that point theres no point shooting anyway, its like 1mp or less
theres a few i suggest, let me google first
i recommend one that uses the normal mount and not one that has the hotshoe mount and is unremovable
if anyone wants one thats highly recommended around my community its the
Vector optics Maverick ii plus 1x22
get it from aliexpress or similar
another good one is the OM systems dot sight
then to mount the dot sight you need
- dot sight to f22
- f22 to either hotshoe and/or cage (1/4 or 3/8)

calibrate the dotsight on the first use, thereafter it should be ready to go everytime you take it on or off. just double confirm alignment before every shoot
for more context on the pictures above:
1st pic: hotshoe to f22
2nd pic: ignore (meant to be 3/8" to f22)
3rd pic: nato to f22
What is the problem with using one that uses the hotshoe mount directly?
no, just that it may damage it if you smash your dotsight on something
i have a friend that doesnt use hotshoe for mounting anymore cuz of that
but most of us just dont give a fuck
darn now i want one
I always thought theyre dumb but hmm
maybe not
should still have one laying around somewhere
Yeah some angry birds. But to be honest it is combination of these two frames. 🤫
Clever composite
shutter speed were 1/6400s
Thanks. It is kind of cheating, but I think that it works really well.
Tree in the bc is not optimal thou.
lol yeah it looked sharper than 1/4000
my cam only goes to that fast mechanical
and eshutter isnt worth using
I don't care about compositing or heavy editing in 99% of pics it just means u cant submit it to competitions
Laughs in 1/32000 on the Z8
iso one billion
Made an offer on a ttartisan sight, might get it if they accept
Omg
Oh nice one
I hate it that its still abit far away and on a man made object 🥲
first time I got a decent shot with manual focus! quite excited and would love feedback
@scarlet tulip Tree swallow day!
they're such goofy little things
love them so much, I've been on a huge swallow kick the past few weeks
tracking in flight with a long lens is tough, feels like a 400 would be easier than a 500
Great minds 😉
Purple Martin, largest swallow we have in the PNW
Actually, might be the biggest swallows in North America?
I’ve lived in places where the town puts up nest boxes for them, they are very communal
Little martin hotels
They almost strictly nest in man made structures here. we have to put boxes up for them
yea
that one is cropped a lot tho
I had closer pics but none of them were particularly interesting
yeah, all the ones i have of them catching bugs are heavily cropped too T.T
I did find a leucistic Barn swallow i think though
And this was a cool series of a tree swallow catching a bug on the water
nice low vantage point for the series as well
also, didnt know that hummingbirds sometimes eat bugs too
pls to get closer
Theyre always so cryptic 😦
they'll find branches and sit, very nicely, with their heads behind something leafy
guys it's sharper than that I promise
left my export settings on Facebook optimized
Well today i'll do some hiding photography to shot a wild egret (main subject) and maybe a kingfisher and bee eaters
Babies !
just realized I got featured on lightroom community
Nice
RDS are great
they’re way over priced, get an Astro one and bodge a cold shoe onto it
old and same price as release date (2018 with nikon p1000), this in mind oly is even older so you could buy used likely for cheaper
somewhere between $30-100 sounds about right, usually just comes down to some reflections and a red dot light, not a very complex device
i found a ttartisan in my country for about 50 usd which ive placed an order for, although itll take time to get here, functionally im pretty sure the 3 are practically identical. As lad said there's also that option of using general dot sights as long as it works out moneywise, my astro dot sight is like $20 here
Pls be sharp! Could be a decent pic
Hello dust holy

If it is shipped from eg. China then there will be added some tax and customs fees so in the end it might cost as much as those other options we have here locally. I like foldable structure and calibration without tools on camera versions compared to rifle versions. 🤔
100-400ii based asf
Reminded me of this pic. Its like a group if birders lookin at an owl.
Is it that good? Costs 2x the mk i, but idk.
Might try borrowing one for a day
i have one
it's great
dare i say, perfect? i have a low res 20mp full frame sensor
not hard to get sharp shots on low res
This comment makes me want to try it lol https://www.michaelthemaven.com/canon-r7-recommended-lenses-which-have-enough-resolving-power-which-do-not/
well, it's almost perfectly sharp even on a 50mp full frame sensor, i assume it'll be great on the r7
very sharp indeed
#1041487027255914566 message i shot this birb with it too
If its from Amazon it should just be shipped from the EU
The mk1 is pretty shit and the mk2 is worth every single penny
Quick question do you compose before you take the picture? Or is it a center point AF, and compose using crop on lightroom
Just noticed most of my bird pictures are on the center, might need to improve on that
shipped now, was about $24 off anyway but i haggled to see what itd do and got $3 more off
Before
i usually use something more static if im thinking the bird would move there, like focusing on a tree branch
The most i do is “birb’s looking right, imma keep the bird on the left” lol
So there is space to where the birds looking
for me ive adopted this focus thing as sometimes im using an ef 2x tc on my lens and the lens is already a bit old and so wouldnt af be
sometimes easier to manually focus lol
if im walking i just kinda do the single point thing, although ill move it if im guessing a bird will be in a certain spot
Nice. Im planning in getting one too
A friend who uses it recommends using one of those hotshoe riser, makes its more stable
im also trying out this servo thing ive never used and so far so good
my flash does have this type of mounting mechanism and it works fine in the flash's case, that in mind my flash isnt water resistant at all lol
...ive also had terrible variations of it though on cheaper things
Something like this
yeah i have that somewhere sitting around lol
think i got it off aliexpress for like $8
Its still selling here for $72
Saw some old singaporean guy using an air soft dot sight adapted to hotshoe
normally my currency its about $89
I couldn’t get the adapter here
yeah nothing wrong with that if you could get it
for me i checked and it outprices the dot sight here
i happen to have one for my dobsonian telescope but that in mind itd still cost more to mount it indirectly vs just buying the dot sight on ebay
thats what i get for being in canada i guess lol
My govt blocked aliexpress
And all the wildlife gear is sold there
probably whats making it pricey then, aliexpress is big now but was based in china and ttartisan also is from there (popular on aliexpress too) so now you got to deal with imports and such in the pricetags
think the ebay guy i got it from was selling overstock, no shipping fee or anything either. ttartisan and this ebay guy being in the same city. This in mind, it will arrive next month so not the quickest shipping
Some not common heron
lenses tend to be sharpest in the center
If you have the resolution and want to minmax it just do that
otherwise not really
usually my bif stuff is off to the side
Apparently my r6 mark 2 is very good with auto iso. Do u guys think this is a good range when its still sunny outside? Using 1/1250 ss
I don’t set a range
Setting a range only guarantees that you’ll end up with bad exposures every time you exceed that range; the best way to handle auto-ISO is to be mindful of your settings as you shoot and adjust aperture and shutter speed to bring the ISO down when necessary
fav pic from messing with pre capture on a1ii for like 30 mins
yea it was perched on a branch and pre cap caught the take off
cape may warb
Nice catch
That ought to be fun
goslings + mom for mothers day
My first 365 days of birding are officially over as of May 08, 2025. Across 209 separate days, and among 160 different species, I have kept 4043 pictures of birds in the year of 2024, and am currently at 2074 pictures in 2025. These numbers amount to 236gb of data. My average "keeper rate" is between 2-5% of the pictures I take meaning that I took well over 150,000 pictures of birds over that year.
This is definitive rizz
The first one is a heron!? I always thought it was a stork lol
They're everywhere where i live
Yeah it's a Squacco Heron and for the second one it's a Purple Heron
Eurasian bittern, I often hear this bird but seeing it is really rare delight.
before
Yeah thats the same thing but cheaper lol
Looks with the eagle owl feathers but with the size of an heron or egret
Boys they turned out pretty good. I think?
remember to save the jpgs in srgb so discord shows the colors correctly in the thumbnails
Nice dude
Still hunting for a short eared owl myself
The mask on the owl in the 2nd picture could be improved a bit tho
I didnt edit! My friend from philippines did. I suck at editing tho. I think he did a good job!
There is 2 living in a big field in my city like 10km away. Saw them 2 days straight haha
guys i don't know what to choose what you prefer ?
the 3:2 version or the 5:2 version ?
Left one is cool!
i want to order one for my exhibit but idk which one to take
both are too good lol
Will remember that ty!
@wide flint would u mind trying to edit the other pic u said needed better masking?
Does this work? Changed to srgb now @spring vault
I'm quite busy rn and also not that good at editing tbh
Ait!
Do backlit shots work in bright daylight or does it have to be golden hour?
I wanna try getting some backlit shots this summer!
golden hour gives better light
Tyy aiit! When is that?
hour before sunset usually
for backlit birds it's best to find a spot where they won't be directly between you and the sun
eg here, the sun is behind the bird but not so much that you're shooting right into it
Ohh yea thats what i noticed just now when i did it today! I moved abit to the left so the sun wasnt straight on
Moved like this
But this is too bright to make it work right? @scarlet tulip
Ideally the sun is closer to the horizon
It belongs to heron family. It usually stays in long reeds and it has great camouflage for that so it is rarely visible. In the other hand its voice is really distinct fog horn like and is audible from great distance.
Daamn where is this? I wanna photograph that too now!!
It is quite common on wetlands and shallow lakes at Southern Finland but as I said difficult to see. This one was at Varkaus on lake called Ruokojärvi.
Not here in österbotten? @green meadow
I'm sure that there is places where you can find one.
New bird day
Teal Duck I believe
went out to local pond for some ducks, saw a goose get in a tiff with a duck 😄
we must have the same ducks
caught a nice burst of these two characters fighting over a female
yeah looks like! I'm thinking the one I saw was a muscovy mixed with something
yeah it's a hybrid
point pelee today was better than magee marsh friday
saw lots more quantity and variety of warblers and they didn't hide in the bushes as often
and it wasn't as crowded
which one?
I feel like its oversharpened
but it might just be me staring at it too long
These are here pretty close to me! Didnt know that they couls get this big. Super rare here tho
my freind acctualy said he heard one yesterday, but didnt see with his camera @green meadow
right one!
Anyone else using a bigger screen on their camera? Its acctualy much easier with it. If camera is on the ground etc
i always use my cam screen
and if i need to see more detail i use the vf
ive been hearing my merlin bird of the day for the past hour and I can't for the life of me find it
Omg.. i never really hunted for golden hour photos and now on my first day i get this... damn 🤣
Hope to god its sharp. Always wanted a shot like this. Almost shot the whole sequence when he got the fish
I mean for Video its useful, but photo? naah
maybe for the focus peaking ?

Jan argues for using a monitor in this vid
it's pretty situational
but in some situations it seems nice
I'm not gonna buy one tho
also as mentioned in the video it'll work best on canon cameras since on Sony and Nikon having a screen plugged in disables the evf
how’d u wrap ur lens with camo?
it doesn’t look like tape that’s why I ask
u can buy camo covers for most popular lenses
is this possible to save? looks ok sharp further away but zoomed in not that sharp sadly. it was soo far away
it is some rubber thing u put on the lens! it was only 120 euros but worth it. it will save the lens from bumps etc
oh wow yeah I definitely need that lmao
and tbh I think if u rotated and cropped it up a lil bit it would look nice
yeah not every pic needs to be a close up and the scenery there is nice
Is there anyone here who has already tested tele macro on an eye with a Sony 200-600mm ?
I'm probably going to do some for the falconry but I don't know if my 200-600mm is good for that (the falconry birds might be afraid of me getting close)
Is it possible to make the bird abit sharper? Thanks guys! @spring vault @eternal igloo
go back and retake the pic except better
you said this was your first day trying this
there will be more days
😭 if only we lived with technology like that
Aiit! Thanks bro i hope so
Omggg @green meadow i also got a pic of one!
Wow, maybe it isn't that difficult to see after all. It just took five years for me to see it for the first time. 😅
Last weekend I installed two new nesting boxes and now both had pied flycatcher singing nearby.
It is. I was lucky! We heard it multiple times and tried to get closer and then it flew away
It only few a few meters away it lives there
I guess im very lucky now 😂 @green meadow my friend who has tried aswell have never seen one. Haha
Bombs away!
looking thru my old pictures from america. this is one of my favorites from my american trip. its a quail right and theyre super common there? i photographed one when i visted joshua tree park
looks like 3 variants but all really just west coast. I've personally never seen one living east coast NA my whole life. so that's a really neat sighting! https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Gambels_Quail/overview
American robins on the other hand for example, they errwhere lol
Oh really?
Really beautiful bright colored birds and nice pictures. Specially first one is stunning. Often feels like majority of our birds are just bit boring grayish small birds compared to what you guys have there.
like this lesser whitethroat
Few days back got really bright sunny day so I decided to try shutter speed 1/32000s. I waited and waited and these we only action shots I was able to get for testing purposes. ISO were reasonable 5000, but sharpness isn't that much better than with like 1/6400s. So it is not necessary to use that high shutter speeds for bif. I would say results will be better if you choose suitable shutter speed rather than highest possible. I can't even imagine what would be the scenario where you really need that 1/32000s???
Your woodpeckers and tits make up for what do seem like some greyish warblers
Our chickadees are quite dull by comparison to something like a great tit
As for 1/32000, I imagine it’s for fast primes
The f/1.2s maybe
58 noct in broad daylight 🗣️
Maybe really fast planes is what im thinking 1/32k would be used for nothing else. Maybe a rocket launch? But no way for birds haha
Nice pics tho!
Aa so like using widest aperture without need for any nd-filters or so. 🤔
Yeah, can be really nice with f1.2 lenses I heard
And that 58 noct is even widerwith aperture f/0.95. 😵
@green meadow thoughts on these?
try darkening background on the 1st one So the bird doesnt blend in as much
2nd is nice, sad that the bird is facing away
yea autofocus had to fuck up when the bird was straight and next to me... as usual
Ahh that sucks
u gotta export these in srgb
only for discord right?
srgb everywhere unless you know what you're doing
@spring vault better?
yes
What do u guys think of this?
I think the shadows are too bright
Still good no? Dont wanna bug my friend over tiny things 😂
He helped me edit these
ur choice tbh
I like it! Can show a guide about shadows? Gonna tryhard editing now when i dont have much work @eternal igloo
So i know what u mean @eternal igloo
I’m still here 😭 and idk I mainly just edit based on feel I never tried any guides, I can go mess with some shadows on my photos to try to show examples later
Okay ty!
Are these too much ai corrected or they work for u guys? They were so far away so we tried using topaz ai to fix the blurr
Too much
First one is soft because of missed focus and there's nothing you can do to it while editing. It is what it is and sometimes it happens no matter what. Otherwise OK, but reeds looks probably bit too dark and unnatural on first one. Second one would be perfect if bird were flying towards you like it does in the first picture. Overall good job and keep on practicing. 👍
Thanks alot bro!
The left pic is still decent tho? I guess theres not many shots of that bird of the back?
Seems like a young Blackbird that just left the nest
that could be it i have a pair of black birds that nest very close to where i saw this guy
aww baby
cheers
first photo is the shadow balance i like for this image
second image is high shadows
third image is low shadows
Definitely young bird, but I would say it is a young robin, because it looks really small.
also beak is probably too small to be black bird
could be also a pair of robins that nest next to this bush
It is decent and keeper until you get better one.
Yeah I agree with Anti here, seems to be a young Robin
ig ill know 100 percent later on but cheers for the narrow down its only just outside my window so ill see if it goes orange or black
idk how fast the babies grow but its almost a tad bigger than an adult robin
🤷🏻♂️
Younglings are sometimes really difficult to define. Please let us know what it is if you get certainty of it.
Thanks brother... i think i know now why my camera didnt focus the bird and im super depressed... apparently manual focus was on my lens.... 😢 i noticed that today when i checked my lens. Rookie misstake
I guess im double lucky cause i still got sharp images?? 😂
A calm day at Burnaby Lake turned into an unexpected portrait session with one of the chillest models I’ve ever met, a sandhill crane who got very close to me and decided to hang out.
Shot on the mighty Horseman SW617 with the Super-Angulon 90mm and Ilford Delta 400 Pro, this moment feels like a perfect slice of what analog photography is all...
lol
that wide angle is really nice
Thank god i have all my pictures saved. Some bangers from my america trip that i missed to edit. From 2021 😂
rocket birb
used open ai's SORA to animate my great blue heron pic...pretty cool
That’s quite clever
It’s uncanny in places but the algorithm does a good job generally
birds already move like robots so it works
have sora animate the bird eating spaghetti
it turned out both good and terrible 😂
lmao
dot sight came and I tried to take it out but it's friggin hot outside so I'm going to go back inside
is that a sigma tele ?
yea 500 5.6
it's good kinda expensive but the main advantage is it's about a kg lighter than 200-600
and a little sharper
It’s basically a 500PF for the E mount
what a very plump bird
I think the shadows matching the rest of the exposure gives it a very monochromatic effect that I very much like
I took one similar to this and I was envisioning what you did here but the green grass kinda ruined it
I dont see green grass. Its yellow to me. Its reeds
Oh u meant ur pic had green grass? Hahaha 😆
Think I found a barn swallow, bit of a lifer so unsure as of yet
Blue and orange swallow bird
yeah, not too bad for a first photo
nice
love the tones
went to ohio for the first day of the biggest week warbler festival and going back tomorrow for the last day
this time imma see if I can borrow an a1ii for longer
I havent even edited my bird pics from last week yet
other than like two
i still got a few myself from today, duck pond plus tree swallows as well, but the barn swallow was unexpected
Anyone else here have camo when going out birding? Found my old one i got a few christmases ago
Sonys last day here was yesterday oh well
I got some nice pics
less crowded than last week
I have some milsurp stuff I use, nothing serious
That’s clever
good day so far
Are older 600mm primes durable? Accidentally tipped my lens when it was standing on grass. Nothing sounds loosr and everything works so should be fine right?
I also have camo on the lens for extra protection
if it works, it's good to go
yeah its like metal
Aiit ty bros
Our cottage camera captured this lol
Looks so fake hahah
Looks like a tiny kuukkeli @green meadow
Apparently trail cameras frame rate matches well redstarts wingbeat frequency. It nests in tree holes and nest boxes so it might have checked if camera is place for nest. 🤔 😄
Oh thats the name? Is it a rare bird? We have tons of different spicies in our cottage
Thats a new one then for us
Yes and no. It is quite common bird. But it is migrating bird so it is summer visitor.
We also have these. Ive seen 2 but no pictures yet. Idk the english name. They are pretty rare too @green meadow
Or no? They look pretty rare
Idk if its the smaller or bigger once we have. Didnt see that well
Wikipedia is good for finding English names. Just find one in Finnish or Swedish and then change language. Well it is not that rare either but it changes from year to year because they go there where is lots of pine cones. And yes there is two really similar looking species (parrot crossbill and red crossbill) and I think that red crossbill is more common.
Oh alright! Even tho those are common i rarely see them
Theyre so cool id love a pic fr. U have a pic of them? @green meadow
"Hello there" ahh bird
Not very good photo no. But this is decent one. They are usually high up in the trees so they are really difficult to photograph.
and this is male red crossbill as far as I know.
and this is female
he’s so fluffy 😭
Here is some quite rare species here in Finland and these all are from last weekend birding trip to Liminka and Hailuoto. 1. common shelduck (300 pairs nests here) 2. ruddy turnstone (4000-5000 pairs) 3. gadwall (700 – 1 500 pairs). Sadly only bad or decent photos.
here we have a lot of them in summer (and some few in winter)
yeah and so cuddly
We have these only in summer few here and there, usually only at the coast. I live in inland so there is a small change to see them here where I live on migrating times, but only really small change.
yeah it must be a little rarer for the moment, where I live it is a migratory passage as well as a habitat for summer and winter migratory birds so we often see them passing near my home
What about do you have bluethroaths there? It nest here in far north. So for me it is possible to see one when it is moving to north or back to south.
yep we have those only in winter and summer (south of france only for winter)
You have great variety of species there. 👌 I probably have to move to France.
In the region where I live we have the greatest variety of birds (more than 350 different species), we are often very popular for bird photography precisely with a large number of reserves (including that of Camargue which has all the species of the south)
Do you keep track how many species you have seen?
It ranges from the pink flamingo and the scarlet ibis, to the eagle owl
I see a lot of them personally so not really after I generally take photos as proof of sight
I must have seen a hundred different species already
We have marshes, forests, plains, plateaus, mountains, lakes and ponds, rivers, the "Bouche du Rhones" are very rich in relief
Ohh super nice bro!
I usually keep track on yearly basis. So I'm not sure how many species I have seen all together but for this year it is 138 species so far. Las year was new record and it was 163.
My goal would be to take a photo of the tawny owl, it is very common here and I hear his sing very often
My all time goal is the philippine eagle. Its soo nice looking and only 200 of them exist still
not bad actually
it's good you keep have good variety
yeah i heard they are not really easy to get
I saw u in 100 lintjua btw! We both got shit ton of likes haha @green meadow
Well that requires two or three trips to west cost for me to achieve that.
Actually I think that I saw your photo there too.
On my current bird photography list, I have to get :
-great crested grebe
-purple heron (portrait of its face)
-tawny owl
-European roller
-bee-eater
-Eurasian Hoopoe
Def did! Haha
I know where a crested crebe lives. Next to the hospital here and not afraid of humans. 2 of them and 1 egg
Not far away I have a reserve where there are a lot of them (more than 100 individuals) but it is very difficult to approach them I think I will set up a hide to have them up close
I want a loon picture this summer. Havent gotten one yet
this one is from my home towns lake.
i don't have this in south but in north of france there some
Oh I go up to a lake in that has like 10 loons and a protected island of loon nests it’s really cool
super skittish and pretty hard to get a photo of bc they just dive and then travel like a mile 😭
The largest reserve in my region is 132.32 km² large, which is bigger than Paris and Marseille combined (biggest city of france)
Nice and it is important to have that kind of places for birds. 👌
This is my rarest bird yet so far. One of my first pictures if i remember when i just started photographing @green meadow only 10-15 pairs in finland. Milvus migrans
I couldnt find english name
this is the whole reserve
Black kite and yep it is rare here.
they are so common here they live in the city
Oh thanks. Damn i was lucky then
Photographed it in ruka while i was photographing in a bear hide in 2019/2020 @green meadow
a bear hide ?
