it can save missed timing, yeah
wish the Z6 had it
needed a faster shutter here, head isn't sharp
starlings are the most ai generated bird
they're every bad bird stereotype in one
loud, obnoxious, messy, proliferative, invasive
All of those but they’re native here. We have so many 😭
They are so damn noisy
they sound cool tho
Wait did I share my owl photos
If not does anyone want to see
Well obviously lol I don't need to ask in my forum 🥰
babies!
?
hehe bif is difficult
stood there half an hour to get one cool 2mp crop
2500mm ffeq!!
sigma 500 af feels less reliable than the 70-350
idk if its dealbreaking tho just in a burst the hitrate will be less
Barred owls?
more chickens today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSt-4ucYZ-g
Yes and horned
In the states, what's the common thought on calling them in ethics wise
Because I heard it's easy
calling what in to who?
Calling in Barred owls
calling in birds with recorded calls is considered a bit of a faux pas
Barred owls are apparently super easy to call towards you by just trying to imitate them
Oh fuck me I get it now lol
I thought you meant like sharing nest locations or something for some reason.
Yeah that’s frowned on for the most part
Yea I rarely mess with calling. Especially not during the spring
I don't need it though. I've found 3 barred owl pairs
Had a great weekend last week photographing Herons and Great Crested Grebes
Heres the first edited photo
Excited to share the rest here
I just found the cooles photo spot literally right outside my bedroom window wtf
That was from our balcony, now I'm even closer

man I wanna move rural, then I can make a bird attraction garden and do photography in my yard
Yeah we dont have our own garden sadly
Just a community garden or whatever its called
F
you'll get plenty more chances
Does anyone have topaz denoise/sharpen I want to try something with a picture
sure go for it
Yeah true haha
so there is this shot of a blue jay taking off but its very motion blured and apparently it could maybe save it
this seems to be as good as it can get before looking AI
wait let me try somethign
\
thats already better
doesn't look awesome, but good enough for instagram probably
yeah
depending on your standards
they arent to high honestly
i dont have a very sharp lens anyway so thats pretty much where my standard is
thanks a lot mate
Ooo
What lens?
Oh cool
10 mp
I bet dxo would do a better job
It usually does in my experience anyway. But I’m sitting at the laundromat or I’d test it
10mp ain't that heavy of a crop rly
I've done a lot worse many times
Im regularly at 5 MP
The key is to not pixel peep and just enjoy the photo from regular viewing distance
Anyway heres another heron photo
I like how it flew so close to the geese, like a show off lol
Yeah
Theyre the only BIF photos I have for now
Small birds are just too damn fast
I mostly look at my pics on my phone so it's fine
the high res ones become desktop backgrounds
Looks like geese too 😬
Herons are awesome. Greens and Bitterns are interesting to watch stalk and skulk around
Oh right my bad 💀
Negative, I need to inspect every single one
well i can for sure tell who that is, now to plan a photo of it sometime
Also got a visitor at my window in the morning
I don’t really feed them in spring/summer but it found something, also got a bird bath
!
bloo
indigo bunting
decided to attend a local birder meeting thing cos a group of 20 people walking around surely will spot more birds than I usually would and its true but that was still too many people lmao
I definitely wouldve missed this one even tho its vibrant af
they also saw a perched hawk from a bajillion miles away
that's also normal
I also got some turkey macro ill edit it some other day though
teleprime + big ass close up bird lol
ugly turkey in full resolution
A bird consumer
I don't think my cats could catch a bird unless it was dead
Real talk feral cats are a serious ecological problem
especially for birbs
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-07-15/cats-kill-billions-of-animals-each-year-in-australia/11307684
No thank you
Keep your cat indoors and spay/neuter, then there's no issue.
My cats are fixed
And fucking declawed
It's only supervised outside time. He's only ever messed with bunnies.
Responsible enough
Yep
Some idiots who live next to reserves that I frequent let their pet moggys wander outside
absolutely fucking infuriating
What a lot of people dont get is that feral cats are nothing like cute housecats
They're some of the grossest things out there and absolute killing machines
my next door neighbor feeds town cats (neither tame nor wild) and they bring him at least one dead bird A DAY
that's the work of 5 cats
yes
feral cats here in europe are a lot bigger than house cats
and they are aggressive
hell they'll even run after you if they see you
I’d not shoot a feral
Every argument made about feral cats in the environment apply better to humans, and we’re the reason why these cats are the way they are
Can’t abide holding an animal responsible for thousands of years of human interaction
Lovely tom
Is this the before shot?
sharp 👍
managed to get a 35mp pic of a hawk since the prime was too tight so I made it into a panorama
That Sigma renders so nicely
Late to the conversation but mine just stares at them, they even started ignoring her at the cabin so she can get real close without spooking them, never tries to catch one though, just likes to be close
The birdlooker
She’s not that fat she’s just fluffy trust
We don’t really have stray cats, and again she doesn’t chase birds she just chills in the forest
Only thing she’s chased is the neighbour cat in heat who kept bothering her
Made sure he stayed under a car for 2 hours at 4 AM
Where is this if you dont mind me asking?
I believe the first person was in Australia. Which makes sense because of the rabbits
In a german town called Braunschweig haha
Ah i see thats quite far away from where i live
I want to photograph some birds of prey but havent had any luck in spotting one yet
Where are you from?
Yeah same. They only mess with mice and bunnies
Im currently in Aachen
No mice or bunnies here to chase, up at the cabin the rabbits are only active at night and she doesn't like being out then it's too cold
What times do you usually go out looking for owls?
One of my cats blends in rlly well so she has fun watching
Hmm and before sunset
I have photos from daylight
Sometimes nesting owls or breeding owls are active in the day
I see
There are some owls somewhere in the forest close to me but I can never spot them, although can't spot much in that forest
Hour**
Sorry
Those photos are from a park it was around sunset
Same I think Im just bad at spotting in general 😭
Sometimes theyre right in front of me and dont even notice until they fly away
Yeah this is my first time finding them
It's really hard I agree
I first went to parks with marked owls, around sunset so I can scope.
Sometimes they are really hard to find
Listening for hooting obviously
Not much high ground in that one forest so wouldn't get any good pictures either way, but it'd be nice knowing where they were atleast
Yep
I've found 3 pairs of barred owls and 2 pairs of great horned
This year. I'm trying for saw whet and screech
I only saw 1 owl so far and i only saw that one because someone told me it was there lmao
The first one I found was like an hour before sunset, I just saw like a patch of something in a tree
Then I went to some parks
Honesty I'd say go out and listen to find the area
be persistent, and look carefully
Bird
Bird
Bird
Thats a lot better than my pic from today

Mine is basically just for ID it was wayyy to far away for a good photo
This one lmao
Yea I live by a lot of water
So I just look up at big birds and 8/10 its a eagle or osprey
This one got really close for some reason
On this photo I figured out how to de sharpen to make it smoother and cleaner
Still needs to be brighter though 🤔
Thats a flycatcher is it?
Thought it was a whitethroat at first but this looks more like it lol
I've only found owls by encountering ppl looking at a tree
orang
Hey everyone, haven't been here in a while but I've gotten some nice shots lately!
Also, this one was featured on the front of ebird!
Oooo
Also ironically that's my barn swallow shot on the bottom too!
Sick dude
Thanks!
Like camera?
Editing software+ equipment
Nikon d500 with Nikkor 200-500 f/5.6
And I use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Classic
😂 why is that?
Idk I always thought canon was good but like how do you get these great shots
A lot of time in the field, pretty much
hi beau!!
damn those metallic blues
are they normally like that or is the lighting doing them favors?
I feel like this is highly subjective and the camera really doesnt determine much of the result aside from the higher hit rate. Ive seen lots of pretty bad results with high end cameras and good results with low end ones so its all really up to the user
Nice aurora shot there, I unfortunately didnt get to see any of it
Slept through it on the first night and stayed up late on the second night for nothing
Lovely photos nice work. I also quite enjoy your videos!
Thank you kindly!
they're really iridescent to the point where you can really only take pics of them when it's overcast cos there's so much glare in the sun
I love the compositions, but I think you’re not doing them justice with the heavy gradient masks 😎
Still awesome catches though 🫡
Thanks, yeah I tend to go heavy on the blacks 😂
Rented out this thing for the week
cool
Idk what software you use, but you should spend more time on the masking, because I can basically see around the bird that you made it brighter because of the bad masking
It’s called a halo 😇
Uhhh that one was from dropping highlights
I don't use masking on my software
that's weird, it shouldnt cause any halo
well it's not that noticeable on a big screen but i could see it well on my phone
why'd you do that on purpose
Idk
hoppe di hopp
First day with the 100-400 is going very well
Nice!
100-400 for the win, great lens
yeah really its crazy sharp
I love it too
what i like the most about it i think is how close you can get to subjects, i do a lot of closeups of insects with it
yeah it is really nice, comapred to my 55-250 its universes apart
but i feel like I am still myssing a bit of range
but its easy to crop it out
on the r7 it should be still decent, i'm using it on the r6
for walking around, 640mm is rather short though yes
yeah its really nice but yeah i tried it by walkig around and it was a bit too short for smaller birds like goldfinches
yeah i guess
everything's too short for the teeny birds 😔
Gotta do hides
What would be long enough for walking around then?
840mm enough?
depends on locations, in europe birds are hella tough to approach for most species, because of the very anchored hunting culture, so here 800 is perfect for me for small birds, i'd say starting from 700 its enough
but in some other countries, birds and wildlife in general is nowhere near as hard to approach
like eastern europe, where birds would literally comme in your hand*
Cant just generally say it like that, depends heavily on location, closer to big cities 500mm can already be enough for walking around even in germany etc
There are kingfishers where my dad lives and they are very used to people walking around
that too, personnally i dont like shooting in rather urban area anyways
Last time I saw a kingfisher the closest i could get to it still resulted in a 3MP crop at 600mm 💀
Oof
Kingfishers are hard to approach, but they are birds of habits and very easy to approach in a hide
Hides for the win
Thats true yeah
Yea my only decent kingfisher pic is only 3mp too but that was also like the 1st month I had my camera and also 450mm ffeq
The 1st month I had my 1st camera ever* lmao
low mp warbler
this one, editing saved it
posted it a few times before
Also, thats at 1/400th handheld, no clue how I got that to be sharp
dont you have is and ibis ?
I dont think the 200-600 IS is very good, its just ok
And the A7iii IBIS obviously isnt on par with smth like the A7RV
Like if I remember correctly multiple reviews mentioned the sigma 150-600 being better? Im not too sure tho
I suppose it would pair nicely with the a7rv or just the higher end models, saw handheld video footage on it and it was pretty smooth
Wild rumour has it that sony’s making a 500mm f2.8? Theres a high likelihood its false but that would be a dream
Along with a special 1.6x tc making it 800mm f4.5
Perfection
A really nice balance between 400 and 600 GM
imo that would be absolutely terrible
waaaay too big to handle
something like 6kg
and 23cm diameter at least
just not worth the hassle at all
i'll throw in a little silhouette, in between your discussion 😄
That was with my 250d
Canon
and old tamron 70-300
is yes but not that good
okok
Pine Warbler last evening, super cute!
https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/619243759
also someone mentioned my dark gradients but this one was just from a really dark bush in the background lol
I like dark gradients
finally yes another
To make it look like the sun shines on the birds
Exactly, although I do admit I sometimes do it too intensly
Sent all of them before, just to show I also do those gradients lol
Atleast a little bit
Yeah
Those look nice!
Thank you^^
Yea I'm really impressed by how sharp the 200-600 is
Also, I still havent found the kingfisher 😔
didnt even hear him
Happy with this although different from what I usually do
That would be Common Kingfisher right?
tried not to disturb the quack
I've been at 2 places the last 2 days so far where He apparently lives
Yep
based on the great tit and wagtail
The only one here in germany haha
Woaaa just googled that one, they have a mohawk!
Niice
Yeah its pretty cool when you get to see it
Thanks, this is probably my best shot of one, they are so darn hard to sneak up on lol
this one was from yesterday, eye af found a way to mess up lol
otherwise wouldve been happy
Yeah kingfishers are usually very skittish
Someday I want to see a Pied Kingfisher
For some reason my a7iii's eye af that doesnt even have bird eye af worked on a bird today lmao
nice
Its just "animal af" but basically just for dogs & cats
Yeah got some cool pics but cant edit them since I'm not home sadly
Yeah I also got this Black-Crowned Night Heron last evening too
i used mf here because it could not see the bird with branches infront of it, like at all
That seems really sharp for manual focus, good job
thanks, there was the option of moving slightly left to get the bush out of my way but idk, like how it adds green spheres into the water seemingly
foreground can be fun sometimes
Yeah that pic looks really nice imo
i cant find herons anywhere here yet, although theyre usually everywhere, id love to get one in flight
looking at the duck spots for a reason lol, supposedly there's loons around too
No shot
extremely stoked about this pic I got today
Niceee
you should be those are great
Northern Flicker last morning
I think this is the female due to lack of moustachio
That 3rd pic looks really nice!
Tried something a little bit different too, which one do you guys think looks better?
i like the second one, background contrasts marginally better
Hey guys! Pretty new to the discord and just found this thread!
These crows are just evading me like crazy
I had the perfect shot at the start.. except I didn’t have my camera
So I ran home
Got said camera
Crows gone
Find crow
Aww
Im sorry I hate missing shots
I got a few bad ones, that’ll have to do
Crows are annoying
Bird
duck (2)
Ignore the dust the camera had been sitting a decent bit because of bad weather
suddenly said weather spiked and now I can't step outside without boiling
Duck
I know a perfect duck spot I should go there
I really like that duckling photo
is that what they're called
ducklings
I think so
I don't have any good crow pics yet despite them being common
yeah duckling
lighting is never good enough
so real
I gotta befriend one and convince it to pose in a studio environment
crows can be difficult being just one dark colour
sunlight almost removes the details
I got some good redwing blackbird pics but those like to pose
This one had no issue getting close until I was ready to take a shot
perfect position? fly away
this one was during a cloudier day but the sun poked out a bit
probably my favorite one i got so far of them
theyre also just big, so when close up it can throw me off if im at like 500mm lol
im hoping to get a raven someday too, bit bigger
They might be shaky, unfocused, or anything of the sort, but atleast I got the photos
I have more that wouldn't convert with the same tool but I'll send those too
I just noticed the 3 next to last are basically the same photos
I thought I deleted the duplicates
oops
Last one, didn't like the others
It's far away and blocked by sticks I only chose it because of the leg
looks a bit different than the ones here, although similar thing i mentioned, black/white birds can be tough to compose for
ive photographed chickadees so many times lol
Might be a hooded crow, I'm unsure
I'm not too familiar with bird races I just assumed it was a crow because of the sound and looks
Here in norway these are quite common just can never spot one
Yeah looks like a hooded crow
went out at a weird time for birding (5:30pm) but it was pretty nice, gooselings and such running around, heres hoping i got another good photo of them, also encoutered a beaver and somehow got a photo of it at a normal aperture and at f/54 because i mustve accidently hit a dial trying to do a portrait shot (battery grip has a dial i couldve accidently swiped)
still exciting to see a beaver whatever that results in lol, auto iso potentially saved a shot
your lens goes to f54 wtf
im not sure when id ever use that but yeah, scarier thing is i didnt notice until i look at settings a second time
image wasnt dark or anything
not quite the f/52 image but this ones f/16 and honestly not bad
unedited and no noise reduction
luckily its in the water as basically everything would be in focus
baby birds are always nice
seems to be a lot lately
both pretty good shots as well, im happy to see green bokeh again
i gotta go through stuff as well but ive been trying to get out every two days or so, been seeing lots of things
target is cardinal now since i got an acceptable osprey shot for now
AGAIN?!!?
Lol I don't know!!
No but like where
Do you put it in ebird ?
Do they tell you when your photo gets put up?
they got u bookmarked
No
How did you find out then?
uses the site often lol
My longest is 120 lol 😅
Too much
But I know a guy with over 3000 for real
Someone in a Discord server I help run notified me
Cool
catbirds are here
How is this even possible
i thought f22 was the max for most lenses
How much deeper can the DOF get beyond f22
I’d be interested in knowing what lens apparently went to f54.
only does it when its on the long end, 200-800 i think is the same way
canon moment
send the f54 pic I wanna see how much diffraction it has
and what iso and ss it used
original vs quick edit
I’m by ocean trying to get seagull pictures
3 zoomed right past me, would’ve been perfect
Got one above me but not close enough
And just as I had switched to the non zoom lens multiple pass by me
I got a few alright pictures
when I was walking home idk what kind of bird started flying after a seagull that got me some nice pictures
Man I cant seem to find any birds currently
So annoying
Maybe I just go out at the wrong time
some days I feel like theyre just hiding or gone
The annoying thing is, atleast in the forest, I can hear them but theyre always up in the tree tops lol
lol yeah that too
my monitor is more dirty so I can't really tell
still goin thru pics from two weekends ago
do u even need more than 26mp
(yes)
Yea
what if I had 60mp of that sharpness though
You’d have 7fps or no money
I dont think i get that much feather detail on my photos 💀 is this a quality control issue
Like genuinely look at this
Raw uncropped
Cropped
Could it be a case of slightly miss focused?
Yeah that looks like the focus is a bit further back than the eye because the neck looks sharp, also for feather detail its better to get as close as you can
Also the lens matters, some lenses especially older/cheaper ones are just not sharp enough for good feather detail
Its literally the same one ur using lol
Same body too
Yeah i think some of the decent results i got were when the bird was so close that I didnt have to crop much at all in post
Yeah you wanna crop as little as possible
for example, this is completely uncropped
Oh yeah thats great
Most of my photos rn require extreme cropping
Need to find hides
Willing to rent one out ngl
Be patient and let the birds come closer
Dont even necessarily need a hide, just dont move lol
That was in my gf's garden so the birds are used to people but when I was sitting still sometimes the birds were too close to focus
Hehe thats the thing, the best it could get is still too far away. Theres this spot i go to for kingfishers and its basically impossible for the photographers to get any closer. We wait there for 3-4 hours to get a few shots of it still too far away lol 😂
Since its a Naturschutzgebiet we arent supposed to “trespass” either
Oh yeah kingfishers are hard
I got a (slightly improved) photo last time by lowering my shutter speed to 1/125
As can be seen from the crop indicator thing, its a pretty extreme crop
I hope I can see some kingfishers again when I visit my dad
Yeah true
Cant even hope for viewing on ipad, just a small phone screen
Any larger screens would immediately expose how low res it is
Yeah same with my only decent kingfisher photo lmao
cropped to 3mp with a very soft lens on my old cam
Looks great on my 6.12in phone screen
Just never view it on a 12.9in ipad screen
Or 16in laptop
Yeah lmao
u see the secret to showing off how good a lens is is only sharing the good pics u get and throwing away the bad ones
warb
almost looks like a fish
Big koi type thing with the large pectorals, I could see it
he warbin
look at that grain
Use lr denoise
that is a crazy good shot man
and the grain isn’t even bad, just don’t pixel peep, or use LR denoise as suggested
Yeah forgot to say that, nice shot!
Guys should I go out look for some birds? Its 4pm so usually a pretty bad time for birds but still
Today was first really warm day here and I remembered how much I hate heat shimmer. At least around noon there were zero change of getting sharp photos of anything that is bit further away. Could that be the case with your photos too?
You should stop asking the internet to define your daily routine
I am not looking forward to this
Yeah, everything ends up looking like this one. And light is too harsh also. But now sun rises here 3:30am so it is harsh anyway when I wake up. 😅
first thing that comes to mind is heat haze or something, even the wood which should be fully textured has a blur
only thing you can do there is get closer somehow
It’s heat haze, nothing to be done
when theres heat haze i find i have to almost be like less than 20 ft away
That's true. And I think that it also messes up af because camera can't get focus confirmation. 🤔
yeah it can
So I have to wake up earlier. 😅
True...but even with the heat haze I prefer sunny days. 😄 There is plenty of days without it in the winter.
Luckily not all of today's photos were ruined by the heat.
i still need to go through my catalog from a few days ago, although i also ran into some hea thaze
Hope fully it didn't affect too much. 👍
That could very well be the case, i do remember it being a pretty sunny day
Its the dilemma between having nice shade but higher iso or lots of light, lower iso, but lots of heat haze
true true and that is really annoying. 🫠
I prefer cloudy days and on sunny days I try to stick to the shade
some birds can look good in direct sunlight but they need to pose just right
like this one I took like two dozen pics and they were all awful except when it faced up
I don't like how iridescent birds like tree swallows look in sunlight
You can just buy a camo for like 20€ and use that as a hide, kingfishers are in about every river if you actually search for them, just post some perch above the river and it will come in no time if it likes the perch for fishing. Then you can just sit 3m away and it won't ever notice you
ordered a camo net for when I'm in a hide
what are you talking about about I just see an empty bed
this photo was taken from an odd angle but i'd like to know what you guys think about it
the angle is odd
I am aware of that
idk the angle seems a bit odd
jokes aside it's a clear picture, very focused, but yes the angle is odd, that's really the only issue imo
cool birds
Hope to spot some nice birds when I’m in spain, although most likely my family is just going to force me to go to the beach
I love Spotted Sandpipers
Last morning
https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/619561435
My tripod arrives today and i found out that i am actually allowed to leave the paths in the forest near me even though its a nature reserve, hopefully some nice pics coming soon
I found one great Spot a while ago where birds bath and animals go to drink etc, maybe i'll try to build a hide there
i barely see them up close
Thx for the tip, i’ll look into it
Wait seriously? I thought it was forbidden with all the “betreten verboten” signs
Nah theres different rules for each one
I even printed it out so noone can tell me to leave the forest
anyone knows what they're doing?
Unfocused and random, but bird
Love how smooth that water is in these low angle shots. If I try to get any lower camera would be partly under water. Actually that photo might look really cool, but I don't think that there is any underwater housings for 600mm lenses. 😅 BTW I don't know why but I'm really having difficulties with this type of photos to tell if horizon is correctly leveled. Some how reflections and bird it self often doesn't match and it hurts my eyes. 😆
This is the first duck shot I’ve seen where I really like the reflection, lovely shot
Thanks. Well I like also those that are taken bit higher when water is calm and reflection is super sharp.
It seems like that hooded crow is not welcome guest near by fieldfares nest. 🤣
That’s one way to get someone to leave you alone
Saw a rare bird alert and thought about going to have a look to get out. Then I saw the comments.
Even with a 30-06 I'm not fucking with a Lion
they're not like black bears, either, they'll hunt for sport
and you won't know they are there unless they want you to know
i'm guessing that the live lion killed the dead one here
Not sure as they didn't go into much detail about it. Maybe that or it was a juvenile and the parent was sitting nearby or something. I'm not a big cat person so I'm not sure on their behavior
Clearly the bird has goose instincts
I saw some wood duck chick's today!
I don't think I've ever seen those before
Lots of wood ducks but never babies
:( 3 of them were hit by a car
Out of 5
only bird pic this weekend
Still counts
What type of bird? lol
gull
tfw youre outside for 4 hours and only get 1 or 2 good photos

Pretty nice though
Nice pose, sharpness and light. 👍
Thanks^^ To be honest the light is kinda edited though haha
There's a new sheriff in town 😅
“This branch ain’t big enough for two”
thats amazing, pretty woodpecker too
v nice
thanks 👋
Thank you!!
Hi all! New to the group, it's amazing to see all the good photos around here. Thought I'd share one of my own as a "hello" 🙂
I was hoping for a nice bif pic while he was taking off
Got this one though, but its a very heavy crop
Merlin, or a different raptor? That shot with the insect is really something
I think it might be a peregrine falcon, if I'm not mistaken. Would fit with the size compared to the insect, too.
Haha yes, my problem is also often that they just hop off the branches at first before they open their wings - out of the frame.
Yeah lmao, gotta try to photograph them mid flight or while landing
Like that one, cropped to 5 mp and pretty bad background etc though
looks like a peregrine to me
BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY!! Oh man I'd love to get into this sort of thing but getting close enough can be a lil troublesome. I have a few decent-ish bird ones but they're not really to my liking (quality wise, mainly). If anyone has any tips I'd love to hear!!
Hiiii welcome

Any and all bird photo is welcome
Getting them perching is fun
addicted to focus stacking swallows
slightly missed focus on the rear one but I liked that pose so I used that pic
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasian_hobby It is an Eurasian hobby. After catching those dragonflies it eats them midair. It looks cool.
Except of the wings. Those it leaves behind.
The orange underparts are striking, never seen them on a bird of prey
And lol, guess the wings are too crunchy
Or tastes bad. 😅 It is amazing how sharp turns these can do while hunting. When in close range it is quite challenging to track with camera.
How do you find them? Open areas at sundown?
Early morning seems to be good time for these. Nearby bird tower seems to be good place. It is at a shallow lake where is lots of tall grass and dragonflies. I thing they might have nest somewhere nearby.
I’ve found kestrels like that, they love open areas they can hover over
It is good place to see ospreys and marsh harriers and also black kites nest there, but those bigger predators usually keeps their distance.
Yeah they are really rare here too. There is approximately 15-20 pairs that nests here in Finland
these are the only somewhat good photos of kites that I have.
Wonder if they eat snails
I'm not sure but I think that they eat about anything from insects and small animals to dead animals or carcasses they can find.
Oh, now when you say it! Totally missed their red "pants" 😄
If you're just getting into it, I think these are a good start 🙂 try to get down low and get on the level of their eyes 🙂 makes it more personal and you get more separation of the subject from the background 😄
And getting close is practice and knowing the birds. some birds let you get real close since they are used to people. some fly away as soon as you see them. If you can, start in a park somewhere, those birds are usually less shy 😄
what tele lens do you use?
my first somewhat decent bif pictures. still way from perfect of course. i might go back to the editing of the cormorant though.
Bird
Are you using a hide/camo or just walking around for your photos? You have so many amazing shots its crazy
Especially the smaller birds in flight etc are really great
Like this one
In the winter I often photograph at bird feeder from hide. It is more "controlled" environment so it is bit easier to get good photos of these smaller birds that visits there feeding. In the Summer time it is more walking around or waiting at some place where the birds might be. I'm not using any other camo besides my hide at the feeder.
Thank you so much. Nikon Z9 has precapture and it is the key for these flight shots of smaller birds.
Ooh yeah that must make it so much easier
Ahh okay thanks, yeah I've ordered one of those 3d ghillie suits from aliexpress for like 15€ just to try it and I was thinking about buying one of those pop up hides for around 100€
This lmao
Looks cool. Share your experiences when you get those. Specially if it is easier to approach birds while wearing that. 👍
Yeah will definitely do that
tough lighting, although im happy with this photo either way (few others as well i havent posted yet)
really busy lately lol
also, went to a pet store while travelling to ottawa, they had all these little birds, even a zebra finch
@green meadow , @gilded yarrow , keep me updated, too. I have a camp tarp which is amazing for mammals, and good for birds when sitting still. They seem to be wary of walking bushes, though. Would be interesting to hear how a ghillie suit works.
Will do👍 Also I just sold an old canon lens for 100 bucks so maybe I'll order the Tent, not sure yet though
Was looking at this one
i have a ghillie suit blind thing (dont really use it anymore) but yeah, if you got the patience and limit your movements it does work pretty well
i think the photohides are a bit easier since you can stand/sit lol, but this one allows you to move like a ghillie suit
this is what i got
another thing some people will do is permanent blinds, i hear they are available at parks in the uk/australia in some places, but can build them too of course on your own properties
basically just a blind built from wood near a convinient spot for birds, those ones would be free but not everywhere would have them
Yeah sadly i couldnt put one of these anywhere
Oh yeah I definitely got the Patience I'd say, a few days ago I was sitting at this little pond in the forest for an hour and only moved to a different Spot because the light went away, otherwise i couldve stayed there much longer lmao
Pretty cool spot
theres always birds bathing and lots of woodpeckers etc
Chilling there in a blind would be even nicer I think
birb
long birb
This was my spot this morning. There's a tree trunk just outside the picture which is a regular spot for woodpeckers. It's a small ravine next to it so it's a great spot to get on eye level with the birds. But no luck this morning, though 😅
Ooo looks like a cool spot
Holy shit what the fuck i just saw a red kite attack some other birds and then get attacked by 2 crows
He literally divebombed those other birds but I didnt see what it was
Sadly incredibly bad because its shot through my window
Kites and crows are the maniacs of the sky
Got this one though
I got two lifers this week. Black tern yesterday and red-flanked bluetail today. 😃
Bluetail looks kind of like a warbler
Do you guys have any flycatchers there? Is our flycatchers kind of same as your warblers? All flycatchers here are migrating birds is it same with warblers? 🤔
I'm quite sure that we don't have any warblers here.
Sorry about my late response to this!
I believe I used my macro lens (105mm) for all of these, as it was likely all I had on me at the time!
Thank you for the advice! Hoping to get some more bird photos over the summer, especially
Aah, I see you have Tyrant flycatchers and here they are Old World flycatchers. Taxonomy and differences/similarities (evolution) between species here and there are really interesting things. And indeed that bluetail belongs to (Old World) flycatchers family.
The old-world group seems much more flamboyant
Most tyrants are shades of olive and grey
@scarlet tulip I had to look this one up. I'm from Sweden and have never heard of blue tails. turns out you have a couple of cool birds in Finland that we don't have 😄
100mm is quite short, you need to be real sneaky then 😄 going to be fun to see what you can photograph over the summer
Before there were bluetails only at the most eastern parts of Finland. But now it has made its way slowly towards west...may by someday all the way to Sweden as well. Do you have Eurasian golden oriole there? It is also really cool looking bird. Really hoping to see it one day.
I checked, and in the very north they have breeding grounds nowadays.
The oriole seems to breed in the southernmost of Sweden. Where I live now (Germany) we have them, I hear them every now and then, but I've never seen them. They are shy as hell, and the bushes around here are so thick that it's hard to spot them. It's still on my bucket list 😄
I think our orioles are a separate species group as well
Grackleee
ok stop. this is fucking amazing
Huh 😀 dang u went all the way back in the chat log
Thanks tho
Im so drained by uni atm i just dont have the motivation to edit any photos or go out
😂 havent this forum in a long time and thats just where it opened to
i 100% understand you
Yeah take your time and focus on what you need atm. It will get better again!
I have a gear question for all users of heavy tele Prime lenses. Please let me know if I should ask this in the gear forum instead. But I thought I'd get better answers here since it is gear often used for birding 😄
What stand heads do you use for lenses like the heavy 400mm 2.8, 600 f4, etc? I have a manfrotto 393 head, but am not happy with it and am looking for an upgrade.
you have heavy tele lenses? i just use a nikon z 250mm which after converting gives me 375mm
interesting
I wish I had a heavy teleprime
I got my hands on a 400mm f2.8 last year. it's so much fun 😄 but heavy lifting.
cool
i wish sigma didnt stop the mega prime lens production
lucky leica is taking off from there
dont really see the point of it though, would just be a novelty
yeah, so happy when I got my hands on it 😄
yeah, I bet it has it's applications, but it's not made for carrying around 😆
Well the best would definitely be a gimbal head I'd say
But these can be quite expensive
Yeah, that's a must. The manfrotto head I have right now is a gimbal, but it is very impractical. I'm looking for something else. And since they are very expensive, I wanted to get some tips and maybe hear other people's experiences 😄
Ohhh lmao I didnt know that
I've found a couple of videos and blogs, but chatting with someone is always more helpful 🙂
Yeah true gimbal heads are huge and heavy
no worries 😄
I just use a ball head right now, thats just because I dont have money for a proper gimbal head though lmao
Works too, also smaller and much lighter
Choosing the right tripod head is almost as important as choosing the right tripod. While Gimbal Heads are often used in bird and general wildlife photography, I found them a bit heavy and bulky to carry around. Additionally, they are not designed to be used for landscape photography. Ballheads on the other hand were not really suitable for supp...
these things are kinda popular
I'll take a look! Thanks
On a monopod with a monogimbal the majority of time. Can always just find a cheap gimbal head if you’re throwing it on a tripod for extended periods of time.
What does "cheap" mean? Isnt that still atleast 300€
Do you know how the build quality is? Seeing something so much cheaper than what is considered "normal" (250$ and up) makes me suspicious 😄
It's going to be hit or miss. Best you can do is read reviews and try to find videos about them. You're going to have to compromise on the cheap end so as long as you're careful you'll probably be fine. I've used a cheap Neewer one on a groundpod so that I didn't care if it got wet and sandy and it worked just fine for my purposes.
If you check all the screws and knobs and make sure there's minimal/no play and they all tighten correctly it's not going to just magically fall apart on you. There are only a few points of possible failure. Will it be the smoothest moving gimbal ever no probably not but it will work for a basic setup and get the job done in 99% of the use cases.
Cheers! thanks for the help. I'll see if I can find enough info to see if it makes sense to replace what I already have with another one 🙂
Oh okay, I only knew about that cheap k&f one but I thought I couldnt really trust it lol
Well like I said there are only so many possible points of failure. So if you take a minute or two before you start using it and make sure everything is tightened down and threaded correctly etc they aren't just going to magically fall apart on you. Even the real cheap crap ones.
You buy the higher end ones for things like higher weight capacity, smoother movement, lower weight, other niche features like folding etc, and way better quality control in general. But if you have the time to deal with the QC roulette and possibly returning/exchanging or just refunding duds you can find decent cheapos.
Yeah thats true, maybe I'll buy a cheap one in the future then
man i love shots of birds like that
the wood and negative space always makes it look better
thanks!
this was my most similar shot, with the stump and spacing
goose, just one this time
i find it kind of fun to photograph these birds since normally id zoom in like the entire way + add a tc and maybe crop
then theres this bird which is almost too big lol
guess thats why i love the 100-500, just the other day i was beside two deer which are even larger
thanks
bird macro
Bird with item of unknown origin
Would’ve been cool to get with the camera but oh well
What kind of gear do you use to transport a body + large tele lens?
big camera backpack
I’m choosing between a 150-500 (Tamron) and a 150-600 (Fuji). Hoping to have one of them by the end of the summer. 🤞
Hard case for a truly large lens
swan
Also first time spotting one of these but from a distance so photo not great
little
I was in birding paradise holy shit
Farmers mowed the field and every bird from a 50km radius was there lmao
Spoiler because heron is eating a mouse
like 6 kites, 5 kestrels, 2 buzzards, 10 storks and 5 herons
Dont have my pc to edit the photos sadly
oo the last one
Yeah I'm praying it's sharp on a big screen to lmao
I had some difficulties to decide witch one to track and photograph. 😅
I don't know what else to say except that Hornøya in Norway is an absolutely amazing place.
Wooow thats amazing
Man I would do everything to visit or even live in norway
Seems like such an incredible place
This was my first trip to Norway (even thou it is our border neighbor). I could't imagine how different the nature is there.
aaaw so beautiful, those pictures!
saw a kestrel today (at least i think it is one)
Was taking shelter from the rain at the neighbours house, so it was a bit nearer than before
I love kestrels
Their hovering is sick
I didn't realize they look so cute. Never been so near
Yes, I could watch one doing it lately, it was amazing
Got this though
Ah you got it off the camera, nice!
I know the feeling 🙈
I need to edit some Still, too
Not sure how good they are though, lighting was not optimal most of the time
German "summer" 🙄
Yeaaaa worst thing
Rained the whole day today again after it was like 20c for 2 weeks
suddenly its below 10c again at night
Damn poor guy lol
F
only bird pic I got in toronto
It is so annoying when these situations are so close but not close enough. 😫
Yeah true haha
But look at who was home again!
They live there but I havent seen it in a looong time, last time was with my old camera/lens
Very nice, what species?
Should be a Tawny Owl I think
awesome, so this is a recent fledge then?
Pretty sure thats just the way they look here in germany/europe haha, I've seen that Owl before over a year ago
1 sec I should have the pics somewhere
huh so they do
Actually I'm not sure
Same spot though, but that was with my old cam lmao
Also worse editing
maybe a female
Could be yeah
burd
That is a cool bird
Haha in one picture "aaw what a cozy morning" and in the next "but what the hell are you doing here?"
what is this i love it
tree swallow
Mallard having a bath.
those are just precious
Thanks. I have never experienced anything like that there.
How do you get the background to look like that?
There’s about two hundred yards between the bird and the trees in the back
And maybe fifteen yards between me and the bird
That kind of distance ratio will blow a background
rock colored background, rock pigeon
I really need to clean my sensor
