Sharper then my sigma 150-600 with 1/2000 đđ
What he looking for
I wish i knew!
I need to find me some good bird spots theyâre not a big fan of the forest I go in, I could try by the coast
First time seeing kingfishers irl
Theyre just as beautiful as i had always imagined
I use ebird to look for spots, you can look for hotspots, filter for shortest distance or species count and also search specifically for certain species (where and when they were last sighted)
i only saw them flying by so far, never sitting on a branch, but it's definitely on my bucket list
Try visiting MĂŒlheim an der Ruhr! Theres a Naturschutzgebiet with a spot called Eisvogel-BrĂŒcke, so as the name implies, your chances of spotting one are pretty high!
I met a few other photographers there also searching for kingfishers, there were about 6 photographers including myself, we all gathered on that one bridge waiting patiently for the kingfisher
I will note it down! We have them too just in my town, and the area around, but i wasn't on the specific hunt yet.
that must be great!
(now i wanted to search for it in ebird, but i am in Aachen atm and can't set it to my town đ ) edit: found it!
Du bist jetzt in Aachen?
Ja, ich arbeite hier (no birding leider)
I just wanted to say that i didn't find out how to set the ebird app to a different location for searching than my current position, but i found out
Wenn du Lust drauf und Zeit hast, können wir mal zusammen Birding gehen
Yeah I just chose the region instead of current location/area so that it covers the entirety of NRW, thats how i found Rieselfelder MĂŒnster.
idk if this belongs here but i found this cute duck
might have to drop the highlights more
ducks aren't birds get that filth outta here

turns out Indiana got a lotta different birds than where I'm at in Michigan
I'll send pics in a day or two
pics weren't good but I saw Kingfishers!
ton of cormorants and pelicans
different chickadee
and it was actually warm here
barely that much farther south
I like this one! Do you adjust the texture? If so how much?
That depends, are you talking about the background or the subject?
The subject
If its the subject, I increased texture to make it more crisp. If the subject is not very sharp, usually when the photo is cropped in and the subject wasnt occupying a large portion of the original image, i would increase the texture quite significantly, maybe around 20-30
If the subject is quite detailed already in the original image, then probably just 10
Or less
I would avoid having it look âtoo crispâ aka cooked
I recently started to adjust the texture and found it to be very useful.
Thank you
No problem
It is! I started by using only the basic adjustments in lightroom
But as I discovered more techniques and uses of each tool, I pretty much started using everything
I use everything now, might as well start learning photoshop to further up my editing game
Mostly on ipad but also on phone sometimes when on the fly
Or when making minor adjustments to a previous edit made on ipad
Is it about the same as using Lightroom on your computer?
I dont have desktop lightroom so i havent a clue. But one thing i know for sure is that lr mobile doesnt have the ai denoise. Which is a bummer
And im planning to change my subscription to desktop soon when my mobile one ends
Yeah thatâs the only thing that is missing in the Lightroom app is the denoise feature.
Not quite. Mobile is also missing the intersect option for masks, which is really useful at times.
These look cool af
They remind me of the Red backed Fairy wrens we have
I love them too! I always think they look like a bird that was designed to be a logo
Dang what a flashy birb
Bird
drone
Government spy.
Catching a kinglet is a hard ask, nice shot
Hard ask because secretly they are government agents
woah what is that grey one with the striped mohawk
It is common redpoll. Male birds are even more colorful.
this one
aah that one is crested tit
i love it
I love tits
Me too...all kinds of tits...and specially great tits. đ€Ł
you have a lot of tits on your instagram
i guess there's a lot of them in FL FI
Yeah specially in winters those are the most common birds. Because majority of them doesn't migrate. And that's why they often come to bird feeder to get some snack on cold winter days. So easy and nice birds to photograph.
i just have stupid house sparrows
everywhere
millions
really nice shore birds if i take a medium length drive in the warm months so maybe it's a good tradeoff
Sparrows were really and are still quite common here, but something has changed and their numbers has dropped a lot.
yeah mostly sad.
same happened near me with finches
I think that with sparrows it is because of changes in agriculture, but who knows???
Loons are so cool
Kinda just getting into bird photography. The first four are from yesterday and today and the last one is from maybe 4 months ago
Any criticism would be appreciated because I am still learning :)
This is you just starting?
Looking good. I like specially 3rd picture. Did you use any masking while editing it? If so I think you missed a spot inside the beak. Then I like composition better on the second picture than on the first one. But on the second one focus might be missed just a tiny bit. Also sky tends to be bit dull BC. Result is often best if you are able to get on the eye level with the subject. Mallard picture would be great if bird comes towards and not away from you, that way connection to subject is better. Last photo is amazing and that bird is really cool. How did you get so close? Somethings that can be improved. Background separation could be better and tiny bit of wings/feathers is clipped off from the frame. Anyway great job and keep on going. đ đ
3rd photo has really nice light & color. Great work
Thank you for everything! For the last one, unfortunately I couldnât do much about the background because I didnât have my normal zoom lens. I had to get close and hope it didnât fly away, so I was literally face to face with it, like maybe 3 feet away. I tried to fix it up the best I could in Lightroom and thatâs what I ended up with
Yeah, I doubt that it was taken with wider lens. But good job getting so close.
But word of advice. Some predators (specially owls), if they have cubs near by, might attack people that come too close. đ
It was a 35mm lens if that tells you how close lol
Yeah I was worried about that, but I really wanted the shot so I risked it. And yes, I know itâs not smart to do that being that their claws are razor sharp but here we are
Yeah I can imagine
And I'm no better. Probably would have done the same. But that is just something to keep in mind.
Yep I appreciate it :)
So I had a question. What is the best way to get eye level with birds? They never seem to land low for me. Should I just sit somewhere and wait or should I continue moving and hoping one lands low? Also, I donât have it right now but should I have camouflage clothing?
Im not quite experienced yet in bird photography but so far what has worked for me is to be in areas where there are branches/foliage that are sort of low enough to be close to eye level
So i avoid areas with very tall trees cuz the birds would be too high up anyway
That is the hardest part. Usually it is not best way to try and get closer to bird, but let bird come to you. So patience is often required. Or some other means like food for luring them closer.
Camouflage might help in some cases, but I think that movement is thing that scares birds camouflaged or not.
I waited more than an hour in one spot just for a kingfisher
And it somehow always appears for a very short time just when I get distracted by another bird
That is correct. And if you are waiting for something to happen it happens just then when you look away. đ
Also it is important to study and learn how birds behave that you are trying to photograph.
At least for me it is also big part of this hobby that I learn new things about nature.
Something that I feel like will make my job 10x easier is when I get my drivers license. I could actually go to better places, the place I currently go to isnât exactly great for it. Itâs dry, colorless, muddy and the sun is in the direction of where the birds want to be at. Canât wait for that
I dont have a car/private vehicle. I just travel by train/bus and walk the rest of the way
Just last week I had walked 18km to search for birds
Good for nature and for you as well. đ
here, we have a nice row of trees next to the river that are actually below street level. So the first branches are quite on eye-level, and the common birds used to the city and people are quite good to catch here (tits, robins, blackbirds, etc)
Saw a bird collecting twigs, shouldâve taken a photo but I didnât want to seem creepy to the people living there
Well I didnât get any pictures at all because the dog wouldnât let me step a foot away from him without howling and alerting the whole town
I got today this photo of crested tit collecting nesting material. And It is always good idea to photograph these situations. Because it tend to be much more interesting frame when bird is doing something than just sitting on a branch.
100% crop lol
blurry pics but, i was wondering why all the birds had gone silent and then i saw this guy
teeny
they always know to look directly down the lens
Ik
Cause theyâre government spies.
mods this is all a joke donât ban me plz
@spring vault Based Osprey enjoyer
Low res bluethroat
Could really use that A1 50MP or a7rv 61MP
Im not sure why he has that ID thing on his feet
Could be a zoo/enclosure escapee?
Black-headed gull?
Canada goose
Wild birds and other animals get tagged too to keep track of the population and such
And I think this is a chiffchaff
I just got some osprey photos but they definitely aren't the sharpest
they're hard to get right
the birds fly out voer water where they're hard to get close up to
beautiful
He doesn't
he just comes to remind you of what you must do
hungry birb
kinda sad the blue eared kingfisher showed up at 4-5 pm, and the shutterspeed takes a dive lol. luckily met two of this rufous backed kingfisher on better light.
kinda sad with this one. will revisit next month.
this one disappoints me the most lol
we found a nest nearby, and the birb was trying to feed its babies. then it rained heavily so it left, and i waited for 2 hours.
when it came back the fog is soo bad I can't take any good pics. and had to leave before it tries to feed the nest.
but yeah, kinda lucky to get 3 types of kingfishers in a trip(2 days of birding)
was unlucky with the 4th kingfisher, iirc one of the lighter blue ones, either a collared or a cerulean(forgot which one).
Kingfishers are the best
Yeah. Will be trying to get this birb on another location tomorrow. But not expecting any good pics(if any lol), its a known javan kingfisher location, but it rarely shows itself(but you will definitely hear it)
They said that the japanese bullet train shape is inspired by a kingfisherâs beak
(pointy)
comically large beak
flickers, flicking
Nvm. I failed lol
Any feedback welcome
what's it lookin at
I'm not sure actually
i think the branches clutter this up too much, i wouldve moved left a bit to get the bird separated
but i dont have much experience so Idk
very nice sharp picture
Incredibly nice but yeah the branches clutter it a bit - also someone with no experience
just gone through today's photos and found i accidentally bumped my shutter speed to 1/125 for half my shots đ
duck!!!
Lets go
brown headed cowbird đ
House sparrow in the garden
@finite flower
so cute
AAA
Angy bird
tried a lens lots of people hate today, was actually fun, if you cant tell its busy already with some branches ill point it out and say its f/11
but being fixed and so narrow, it was interesting to mess with
also seems sharp to me
that is so sharp
Thats Mordecai
this one just screams a bit more
i dont have a great picture of margaret but i did see one
theres also raccoons everywhere lol
The only animals I have nearby are some ducks in a jolly small lake, pigeons, blackbirds, sparrows and insects
some robins appear from time to time
lots of those here too, i usually go out of my way to travel to places to find more interesting stuff (today i seen 3 tree swallows, although dont have a great photo of them)
enough detail to tell at least, but very far away
Yeah the thing is that im currently in "bachillerato" and is taking me to the limit
when summer comes, my parents wont be seeing me much during the day
work does keep me locked up somedays although i work 5/7 days per week so free days can be nice, gives time for travel and stuff
always the weekends off
thats nice, my weekends are full of literature, phyisics, maths, technology, etc
What camera and lens do you use?
i use a canon r6 (normally with a RF 100-500 4.5- 7.1)
in the image today i used a canon rf 800 f/11
Dammm
Im currently using a Canon EOS R7 and my kit lens which was a 18-150 mm
But im willing to get the sigma 150-600 contemporary
150-600 has a nice range although on crop a 100-400 is also pretty decent and a bit sharper if i recall
cant really go wrong with either one
would be 160 - 640 with the 100-400 on crop which is pretty good for birds
robbinâ
Real
Yeah but the cheap one comes with f/5.6-f/8 and thats too much for me
Meanwhile the sigma goes from f/5.6 to f/6.3 which is similar to my kit lens
I never ended up editing my shot
I usually use focal length/aperture to estimate âbokehâ potential
Like Tort mentioned:
50/6.3 = 7.9 = bad
400/6.3 = 63.5 = good
Higher ratio, better bokeh
Yeah on the 150-600 goes till 6.3
Anf thats the max
Inspired me to revisit
must of taken our shots within a milisecond of eachother
Plus others
Why is every bird a robin
I'm trying to find new birds but I just see like 40 robins
idk go to a marsh
I got a lot of birds I'll sort out the photos later I think I got a crow and I definitely got a male Cardinal this time
I got this white and black duck that dove underwater it was really cool looking
ducc
Whoa that's a vivid green I love it
Thatâs sharp
Is this the power of a zoom higher than 400mm?
Use those pickles
Birbs are too far awayyy
i was sitting on my balcony with a beer and baseball on the radio, and this guy showed up on the wire
same with this guy, but he took 22800 ISO to handle
Damn he gave you stink eye when you were there first
mockingbirds really hate not getting what they want
who the fuck are you
There were some really fat robins in central park lol
yeah he rly was who the fuck are you to me
Well well, who are you?
lol nice angle
Feeble human, canât even fly
How dare thou being rest thy sight upon me
So round haha I think cardinals might be my favorite bird
I like tits
I like woodcocks
I had an idea to combine the rgb channels from three photos from a burst
kinda neat
gonna post it online as proof birds arent real
Chat is this real
another one from the 800mm, cleaned up nice on a rainy day for 6400 iso
what im learning is that aside from DoF the f/11 is alright
also didnt struggle with larger BiF at all, so probably does fine on eagles as well
did struggle on small songbirds
...that in mind not sure id buy it right away(already having a 100-500 with 1.4x tc which gives similar results), but if i want a less expensive lens to use on say a trip itd do fine
still more interested in the 500 f/4 lol
I got a couple of turtles, one might be a snapping turtle but it was underwater, and i got a chipmunk too but they're not birds so i can't post her e:(
look another robin lol
but check it! I finally caught the cardinal it was such a cutie
he was chasing a female cardinal around and i managed to catch like the half a second he was chilling on a branch staring at her
i got a few geese and ducks but i can't tell what kinda ducks they are
cuz they don't look as green as the one above
there's like a bajillion duck species
pretty sure this one's a goose
canadian goose
Canada goose
basically just a big duck though
hahaha but it was like 4x the size of a normal duck
i think this one's a duck but it was just sleeping like this until the goose came and scared it off
yeah that ones a duck
theres also this, a merganser, but its basically just a duck with teeth
see them everywhere with water nowadays
ohhhhh that one looks a lot more sinister
has like red eyes and stuff
and way more interesting than boring sleeping duck
theres also loons here which are cool
they make that creepy noise you hear in movies at night that sound like wolves
goose bullying the ducks lol
the ducks were just chilling and goose just swims in and starts chasing them for no reason
never been to ny but if there's a beach by the ocean within driving distance itll be a nice spot for pics during sunrise
hmm, i don't have a car tho
oh what's this one? This dude was just like hopping about in the mud i assume looking for food
but there were like 4 bird photographers trying to take pics of it
so I got confused and took a pic of it
they were all like it doesn't behave like all the other black birds and i was like i don't know enough about birds to argue
I use google lens a lot lol
I think it's a rusty actually
they look similar but range map says brewers doesn't go to ny
Rusty Blackbird is one of North Americaâs most rapidly declining species. The population has plunged an estimated 85-99 percent over the past forty years and scientists are completely puzzled as to what is the cause. They are relatively uncommon denizens of wooded swamps, breeding in the boreal forest and wintering in the eastern U.S. In winter...
breeding male is all black
ohhh nice
90% of the songs are robins though i'm pretty sure
i got this app for ny but i haven't used it yet haha i forgot to download the data pack before heading out the first time and it never finished downloading on 5g
pretty sure this guy's a crow of some kind i'll try google lensing
oh phone only
ohhhhh
there was a section of the park that had a lot of pine trees
and they seemed to love that
it was the only place in the entire park these guys were but there were heaps there
its reflected in the sun
the last one was when the sun was starting to go down a lot
grass and auto white balance turned the dove purple lol
haha wait is it a dove?
mourning dove
oh damn i thought it was a new one
I like birds with bright irises
ahhaha
there were a few pigeons
i got a white pigeon actually it looked so weird
i assume they just have like albinism or something
looks like a weird looking chicken lol
I find them hard to photograph uniquely especially since they will run up to you
Not many other birds do this
yeah they have no fear
i kept getting them out of focus and even this one i don't think was a good photo
anyway, most of my photos weren't great, but i'm gonna try get better
i needa start going birding a bit earlier cuz it starts getting dark every time i go
I usually bird around 11am
ahh i ended up going around 6pm both times i went because it was after work or after everything i was doing
not the most ideal
Work tends to suck the life out of peopleâs days, so I just take 2hr breaks although my workplace is also fine with that
They know no one wants to be inside 9-5
But if I go 9-7 instead with that break itâs fine
hmm, the problem is my job relies on other people so it's pointless for me to be working till 7pm, i won't be doing much past like 5 when everyone leaves
Robin looks bit disappointed. Probably because this weekend blackberry winter hit quite hard and it snowed for about 10cm.
Poor guy missed out on his berries
Heâs looking at me like Iâm the one that took his berries bro
what bird
the one that's pooping
blue crowned hanging parrot
a few of them hanging around the same spot in jurong lake gardens
they a migratory pass through or just bit of a restricted distribution in Singapore?
Or was I just unlucky that I didnt see any
Yoo what a beautiful bird
oh damn they look cool
One bird I regret not getting a shot of is the common flamebacks
saw some near my hotel in Havelock, rushed into the hotel to grab my camera gear
come back and they gone
reed nightingale
reed nightingale when they invented reeds đïžđđïž
fr
pretty reflective duck with the 800 f/11
crow on a less bright day with the 100-500, i think the 100-500 wins but still, always was wondering what itd be like if i went 800 instead first
seemed like it was fine to use, only day i found limitations was when i found a garter snake
Black grouses looks quite bad asses when they are lekking. Shame that there was not enough light.
ISO is kind of strange value photo of robin is taken with ISO14400 and redpoll ISO2200. Shutter speed and f-stop are same in both pictures. Robin was exposed correctly and red poll under (exposure lifted in lightroom). Now there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference between noise levels (at least to my eye). It might be even less distracting in robin picture because of lighter background. đ€ So point of this is that it seems to be pointless to use lower ISO value on the field if you need to raise exposure level in post. This might be obvious thing but I thought that this was a good comparison.
It's better to actually use higher iso in the field than raise in post
I believe this will be a money-shot once edited!
a6400 got more buttons than a6700 smh
already is a money shot
Got my first owl shots!!
Really? Because I was trying to photography owls and it made it really noisy. Like colored pixels
Yes it is
It always is, how much depends on the quality of your sensor
But modifying exposition in post will add more noise than adjusting it while shooting
if there was any time for the r6 to focus this was it
oh well
high definition tree stump
nailed it when they left lol
something for another day i guess, but, was nice to see them running around
good day either way though, got something i was chasing for awhile which was red winged blackbirds
i think i nailed that one, will have to do edits later (cropped to show focus)
I like it, would be better if it was focused on them, but I like it
grey heron
đ€
p1000 2 when
modern premium bridge cam would be cool
with how much phones have improved
modern phone sensor and processing with a big ass lens
How often do you use the range 300-450 (ish) when photographing birds?
Im at 600 most of the time and still too far away too
Iâm trying to justify going for a 70-300 for hiking/birding (~ 110-450 full frame) but fear the reach would rule out birding. Guessing 100-400 is the bar. That would be ~ 600.
depends where you're going and how friendly the birds are there but anywhere the birds aren't super friendly it gonna be wanting
like my brown bird pics above were 350mm on apsc but it was 10ft away lol
If you're not going to or willing to wait in hides, 400 is going to be short
I was doing this today lol
Howâd you know it would land there
they were there and I hoped it'd come back
The color combo of the subject and background
Also how are your photos so clean and sharp? Is it the a6700 sensor, the lens, or the light?
My photos w/ a7iii and 200600 rarely get that sharp and clean, maybe the light or sum or sensorâs iso performance
also my sharpest pics are from pretty close up and not cropped so it's full res and no heat haze
Yeah the feather detail is bonkers wth. Looks like a teleprime
Ah i see
I was like 10ft away from the birb
350mm lens on apsc is 525mm
200-600 needs to be stopped down to f8 for peak sharpness but a7iii is 24mp so u might not need to do that
I am usually like at least 5 meters away from the bird. With that kingfisher shot it was probably much further. Cant really get too close to any of these birds
Except the common robin and blue tit that isnt shy around humans
Still really nice detail tho
Because the birb still covers a relatively large portion of the frame
First kingfisher shot i took last time
I dont have any good kingfisher pics yet
I did get close to one but I took the pic thru a dirty window
Yeah me neither they are tough birds to photograph
out my bedroom window lol
Iâll be trying again soon probably, hoping to get a nice in flight shot
kingfishers here look diff
Hehe yeah
Iâm at 500 if I want birds
Anything under 400 on a full frame is probably too short
splash
70-300 is enough on apsc
100%
no way
it's 450 equivalent
that in itself isn't horrid
300 on 20MP APSC
but, this is a prime, not a slow telezoom
focus stacked birds
gen fill the fucked middle part and expand the frame to the right a bit
dont let the shitty focus stack software keep you from greatness
that is a bird... I think
these government spies are getting more convincing every day
I didn't gen fill anything! I just only took three pics to stack and masked them in PS manually.
I have tried these also, but often end up to the same problem, like in this picture, that there is out of focus part of branch or ground or something between birds and it just looks bit unnatural to my eye.
thats awesome
wait I shared those ones already
hey where da birbs go
heres a new one
red wing black birb
this?
I got it for $650 new!
wow interesting, good stuff
not enough zoom a lot of the time tho so im getting a sigma 500 5.6 too
spoiled by this lens so 200-600 is off the table
not sharp enough
baltimore oriole?
yeah
nice
u just wait for the pic im working on now
1.8 megapixels
AND it has motion blur
topaz pls save me

im going to ohio prolly next weekend for mega migration
all the migrating birds bunch up under lake erie cos they gotta fatten up before flying super far
got all the spots figured out
not visiting all of those but if I happen to be near
Close up collection
these are hot, I love them!
Thank you so much! đ đ
Its a crime that they made this lens sharper than the full frame 200600
Had no idea the 70-350 would be that sharp
Thanks. I know. I spend too much time checking these photos out zoomed in at 100%. I think it is kind of obsession to me. đ
i seen that bird once here
never since though
u might see it again soon with migration stuff happening
it was in my neighbors yard suprisingly, wish i got a shot of it
These are amazing!
doing bif with not enough focal length but impressed by the autofocus regardless
these ones had about enough pixels for discord
was almost golden hour and I didnt like yellow birds but now the water is extremely blue lol
nice tree
think it was eating it
never left it
which was annoying cos I couldnt get closer lol
Killdeer?
It's loudly telling you what must be done
robins kinda ugly tbh
birds
ur cracked asf
Just had peak bird photo experience
Finally found a good spot
Got a bald eagle in flight
It is an osprey. đ
lifer đ
Did you saw it diving for that fish?
took me a second to realise that's a fish and not a rock with eyes đ
Well maybe next time. Cool bird.
ah yes, ye old eye rocks
It was suggested I should share this photo here. đđ»
These with the 400?
Yup
I honestly wasn't super happy with the results today, the noise was pretty rough even at like 1600 on Zfc
Hoping next time I can get more light
the blackbird and grackles are the best of the bunch
shot of the two gulls is nice too
i think some of them could use some dehaze, it'll pop the darks
yeah i was abusing dehaze on these
the browns kept getting really crunched
this is how washed out the raws were
i also think im still dealing with the stablization causing some motion blur while panning and stuff
yeah im already using sport mode tho
Hmm
Was going to say, give that a shot
What shutter speeds is it happening at, and do you have samples?
this is the one that bothered me the most
maybe it's just because of noise and focus though
the head looks like motion blur
maybe I'm just peeping too hard
What shutter speed?
Aperture?
4.5
Dark day out
It could be motion blur, talons look kinda similar
Honestly at that speed just turn the VR off
yeah next time when i get more light ill try with and without
Above like 1/500 I only leave it on because it smooths out the viewfinder motion
Do you guys use a polarized lens for birds?
?
A polarizer? No
Did someone @ me?? What's up
Sorry I need to be more active here lol
I posted these on my insta, but horned grebe!
Eh kinda harsh
Very happy they got so close thi
I think this one is my favorite
Grebes are nice
this is my first red winged blackbird photo and probably my best for awhile lol
came out pretty great
I love rwbb
Is there a website you use to locate birds?
eBird transforms your bird sightings into science and conservation. Plan trips, find birds, track your lists, explore range maps and bird migrationâall free.
thereâs an APP too
And thereâs an app called Merlin Bird ID for ID help also made by Cornell
You can post photos on there too
with shore birds it's nice to get as close to the ground as possible
looks very nice
i did : D
just stood up to take the pics for the story
warbler capital of da world
I saw a couple
no amazing pics yet
two owls!
bajillion ppl here it's pretty crowded
that seems like a nice spot
We have a hawk in our neighborhood every year. I live in a city in south eastern Los Angeles county so itâs pretty cool to see when they are around. Iâve had limited success shooting them with my sigma 100-400 lens. This is one of the best Iâve been able to capture.
Spring is busy time for birds and bird enthusiasts. đ
Woaaa great shot
I love pictures where you can see the rain
Man I really hope that someone buys all my Canon stuff so I can finally get that 200-600
Yea I dont think theres anything close to it for 1.5k
it's 1600 i think
I like that the 200-600 has internal zoom
In Germany atleast
Damn thats actually crazy
Sometimes I regret not having saved up a bit more for the A7IV because of bird eye af
but then I remember that didnt even exist a few years ago and people still managed to get amazing photos
Itâs just a nice to have for sure
Back from vacation I saw and heard a lot of new birds! Now i have to go through and see, if there is actually a good photo among the pictures.
This one is a european serin, if my research is correct
Sardinian warbler
that ones cool lookin
i love the red eye. makes him look a bit angry though
Angry or a bit tired
The female doesn't have it, so i guess it's an attraction thing again đ the more intensive the red, the more attractive for the female
Today I saw mostly white birds with dark head. đ
Those two terns hit the perfect pose
aaawww
one of these ducklings is not like the other
tough sunlight and branches though but i got a few things im happy with from there
just need to edit them
i love the laughing gulls, prettiest gulls
motion warblur but im still happy (if you see any odd spots it might be because of sharpening to try and fix motion blur)
sux when u got shutter speed low for the best pic and then they do something cool
I use 500 most of the time and that def would be blurry
usually I just topaz sharpen the face and leave the rest motion blurred
this is something i could work with, unedited for now though
annoying branch
next time i should bring my monopod lol
yes indeed and they were so close together so that even the bird behind is almost in focus. đ
Little gull is my favorite of gulls. But if terns are counted as gulls then terns are my absolute favorites. đ€ đ
A little off topic, but I've always wondered if so many birds have dark eyes so that they can withstand bright sunlight better. Such as built-in aviator glasses. đ
Continuing with my vacation birds
đ cool theory! i don't have a clue đ
Great photos. Shorebirds/waders are such nice birds. đ
Me neither...đ
Thanks! I was lucky that it was really near, so i had for once the chance to not crop it down to 2 pixels đ
i want to find these so bad, it's the whole reason I got a birding lens
I found it in Sicily, if that helps đ
durian bird durian bird
Nice bokeh bro
Hella nice
Government spy (also nice pic)
I didnt think I got that many keepers on saturday in ohio but it turns out I got a ton and its gonna take forever to edit everything
heres my fav though
if google reverse image search doesn't know then I don't know đ
extra fluffed up ruby crowned kinglet
That makes the most sense
New bird to add to the "photographed" list
đ
other new bird i seen, kingbird, got two other photos to share of different birds later
hoping next time its not in direct sunlight on the shadow side
Omg is this cute!
Myrtle?
yea
Nice shooting
Iâve seen maybe three this year here
They migrated through, now theyâre gone north
Photographed some black-capped chickadees today at my favourite spot, it felt good
Gonna share more in the following days
Here are some more
This is how it looks like when you just slightly overcompensate while tracking the bird. đ
Luckily this golden eye gave me many opportunities so I think that I nailed some shots as well.
Just stitch them together đ
I love the third
Wide crop works quite well. could be bit sharper thou. I think that 1/2500s shutter speed was not enough.
First one is my favorite.
I guess I was led by the expression and the taps đ
Action shots of birds are my next thing to work on. I'm still way to slow handling the camera
But there is plenty of time to practice, I just need to keep going đ
Yeah, practice and just keep trying to take the photo when opportunity comes are the key components and learning never ends. It is still hit or miss for me too. đ
Yes I do! I see a lot of improvement already compared to half a year ago, so I am encouraged to just keep going
first and third pics are so good. I use topaz to fix small amounts of motion blur
usually just fix the eye and beak and leave the feathers blurry cos it doesn't look as natural
combine the original and topaz pics in Photoshop with masks
Thanks. I have tried sharpening that way sometimes too. But I'm having difficulties to get good results with that topaz sharpening tool.
there's lots of artifacts so u gotta mask a bunch in photoshop after

Magnificent
that's the 500/5.6?
at last, the Sony guys get to experience the magic of a small prime
the teleprime without holding the lens flex
do that with a 600 f4 I dare u
snap
was it the wrist or the mount? doesn't matter, you're out a few grand either way
omg not the gooslings
awesome pics
I feel like Tort lives where Snow White lived
were you the one that took that crab picture with all the bokeh
i dont think so
thats some nice bokeh
same sorta colors and composition
barred owlet today
this is their first one in three years! đ
fuzzball
Qtip lookin ass đ€Ł
Itâs so sharp
the crop is really tall
Thank you!
todays birb pics
With the 500?
yea
looking nice
Nice
eeg
Last six months it has been cold and mostly cloudy, so I was in trouble yesterday with all of that harsh light and heat shimmer. Now I have to relearn that it is nearly impossible to get good photos at midday. đ Lots of migrating birds thou.
How do you guys take photos of predators? I think that all I get is these bit boring fly by shots against bright sky. Also I'm having difficulties to expose them correctly (probably because of the big lighting difference between subject and bc) and it often feels like these shots are lacking contrast and sharpness. What to do differently?
Well for Ospreys, go to a location where theres a sheer cliff face
Better chance of getting one more level
Got this last year at Mindarie
Actually this can apply to other raptors such as peregrines that also nest on cliff faces
In other news, cropped these in a tad
Also BLEEERRRGH
So getting to higher ground is the key. I have tried bird watching towers, but usually raptors pass it from really high or faraway. We don't have that much of a cliffs here so our ospreys tend to make their nests at the top of lonely tall trees and such. That white falcon is so cool looking bird. đ
Black Shouldered kite, its the reddish orange eyes that really make them stand out
what time of the day did you take those photos?
They can also hover the same way Kestrels do which is cool af
Around 10pm, it's late autumn here now, kinda a dead period for birds
Although a lack of rain has made them congregate in the few areas that still have water
that hovering is really cool looking. I was surprised that Rough-legged buzzard I saw yesterday could do it also, but not as smooth as kestrels.
My problem might be that I usually see those flying raptors at around mid day and that's why underside of bird is in hard shadow. I should start going out earlier or later and try it then.
At this particular location they were nesting on a phone tower
Impossible to get shots of them roosting there thatd be worth a damn
but they'd perch on the sand dunes or on posts near the beach
especially since they'd had a successful season with 2 fledging
How used these are to people? Do they fly off if you try to approach or do you need blind and wait for them to come by?
Depends on location
This place was a popular beach but I don't think many people took dogs there
so you could get pretty close without it bothering them
Here if i see any raptor sitting some where, they will surely fly off before I can get decently close. đ
and the location of the flying one, the walk paths are far enough away from both the nest platform and the cliffs that they can avoid at their leasure
It is interesting how bird behavior even within the same species can differ based on location
that's true and behavior also differ between seasons at same location.
I mean we know why thats the case
well true.
I think when you're doing it at locations which are public, the biggest factor is dogs
How often people take dogs there, how many offlead locations ect
if nesting areas are fenced ect
Do you mean by dogs that if there is lots of people with dogs, birds tent to scare people even without dogs more easily?
Dogs chasing birds usually
Or putting pressure on areas causing birds not to go there
Now I see. Well probably depends of species. Specially if there is lots of open space and no trees like those beaches. But I don't think that is the case like parks and such.
for some retarded reason City of Stirling refuses to fence off the areas where Rainbow Bee Eaters come to nest at lake Gwelup
and has most of the park as leash free
stupid
There are other reasons that affect bird behavior in public areas of course, but dogs tend to be a big one
That is shame. I think that here it is "illegal" to keep dogs with out leash even in forest at nesting time, but I'm not sure how well people obey that:
"but he doesn'T do anything, he is listening to me word by word and won'T run around!"
In regards to the area I'm talking about, aparently locals compained about the fencing
Despite the fact in another council nearby, they've permanently fenced off areas for rainbow bee eaters to nest
and its been very successful
Great how people are proactive with these things but sad if authorities are not interested.. And btw sorry for all how bad my English is. Please forgive me for that.
i don't see any problem with your english! (also mine is not perfect, but as long as we understand each other, i don't care about the level of english! it's an international server đ )
Thanks and yeah I'm happy if I can understand most of the time and also if I'm understood most of the times. đ
They usually perch in the same spot repeatedly if you can find one
Back-lit raptor
For ospreys, I end up looking either for perches or hunting areas
Even shooting from lower ground I get decent action, though height obviously helps
Herons and other predatory waterbirds, I just hang out where they are and wait for them to start moving or hunting
this one was hunting although very high up (nest was up high as well) couldnt quite follow it since i cant walk on water lol
maybe another day itll be closer
Havent got the time to edit this photo but heres a very tough looking Blue Tit
thought this was a dslr for a sec and was like wtf

goose today
seen the osprey too but not mcuh luck as it rained
i still think its visually interesting although far from perfect execution
too much rain
camera for sure is tracking them but still too far
The male tern brings the fish to the female to prove that he is good partner to raise chicks with....and I clipped the wings. đ„Č
so close, still a nice shot though
Nice one! What focal length was this?
600mm + 1,4x tc so 840mm
Certainly not the best I know, busy background, something infront of the Bird etc but its one of the first pics with my new lens and I'm really amazed by how sharp it is
Also pretty heavy crop
And high ISO
And it still looks nice imo
This is the original
Oh dang meant to post this here not lounge but whatever. Heron gangs are out today. There were three or four groups around this size scattered down the few miles of beach.
Didnât take camera as Iâm not allowed on tidelands anyway because itâs a reservation
Still fun to watch from the road though.
what kind of herons are those
they look so tiny
probably just Blues
the blue herons I know are pretty big, maybe that pic just makes it seem like theyre closer than what they actually are lol
I got no sense of scale lol thought that was gravel
scale is so confusing here đ
Will bring the big 500 here when it shows
dont get eaten by zombies
I can bludgeon one with a monopod if need be
