Yeah these are by far the most common birds I see but i'm not quite sick of em yet
very cute
wow i wish there were more here
@fleet mica yo so what adapter would I get?
i want to see so I can plan things. I kinda wanna get a job
masks are a critical part of processing images imho
I presume breeding plumage?
I would get the official EF to RF adaptor. You just need the basic version, you don't need the version with the control ring. Some thoughts: R10 - good image quality and AF, but not so great above ISO 3200 imho. No IBIS. Video is inferior to the other Canon cameras in the range. R7 - better than the R10, better buffer too and better high ISO performance by around 1-1.5 stops. Better video. Both of these are crop cameras, so add a 1.6x to your lens focal length. Handy for smaller birds etc. Full frame - the original R6, which I recommended has excellent high ISO performance, AF a decent buffer and very good IQ, but is only 20mp, which will hurt if you need to crop and will overheat with 4k video for longer periods of time. Rolling shutter is an issue too with the slower sensor readout speed (this is even worse with the R10 and R7). The R6II, if you can get a well priced used 1 on the market (unlikely since it's a pretty new camera) is a big step up imho - 24mp, much better sensor readout speed, better EVF and LCD screen, no overheating, and improved AF performance and high ISO performance. The R5 is probably the best Canon camera for birds imho, simply cos of 45mp. The R3 is superb in all areas other than megapixel, being only 24mp. For larger birds, this is no issue. For smaller birds where you need to crop, it will hold you back some and you'll lose some resolution of detail vs the 45mp R5. In all other areas, it easily betters every other Canon camera in the R range.
Overheating - this really only applies to 4k video for longer periods of time and especially in warmer climates like Australia. In cooler climates, you'll be able to shoot for longer periods of time before the camera starts to overheat (R6/R5). If buying used, 1 question I would ask is if the camera(s) have been used for video, and if so, 1080p or 4k and shorter or longer videos. Take note of the location of the seller too, as this will give you an idea of the climate that they live in (hot/cold etc). Also ask them if they have used ES (Electronic Shutter) or MS (Mechanical Shutter) or EFCS (Electronic First Curtain Shutter). MS exposures should be noted, if a high number, then the shutter may be closer to failure. Most people today typically only shoot in ES mode btw.
Love the colors
I got a similar compo to urs, just flipped lol
And another flamingo shot
I love how theres a perfect ripple
you have flamingos in Germany?
Zoo
Hence why u can see some grey stripes in the out of focus area
you never heard of those german flamingos?
The one from Canon is 130$
I thought you said 70
And I won't shoot long videos, probably like 10 minutes at the most. Reviews said it overheats at 20-30
So do you think the r5 is better than the r6 then?
I saw an issue was with tracking focus. Have you experienced that?
I'm probably going to be looking at the r6 on mpb or some other place if it's cheaper.
Maybe I can get a job bc I really want an upgrade
oh wow! it's like AUD $150 here in Australia. Never expected it to be that high in the US given the currency exchange rate.
The R5 is better, but much more expensive used. 8k video, 45mp, better EVF and better sensor readout speed.
NO AF system is perfect. The R5 and R6 has excellent AF and will be a massive upgrade over your current camera.
Might I suggest finding a place where you can hire a R6 and the adaptor and try it out for a week. That way you can try it with your lens and get a feel for it.
BTW, do you use back button AF Libby?
Yes I do
I'm assuming I can remap it on r6 as well?
certainly can
I would really recommend you hire a R6 for a week. Follow a YouTube tutorial on setting it up for birding photography and go out and test it.
It may take some time to get used to the EVF, depending upon how sensitive you are to such things. My last experience with an EVF was way back in 2012 on a Sony RX100 II and I HATED the EVF with a passion, it was SHIT. I tried the EVF on the R6II and it was really nice. My R3's EVF is gorgeous. Took to that like a duck to water.
What is EVF?
Also I'll ask about renting it. There's one nearby I can go to. Idk how expensive it is
Ohhhh
Yeah I was worried about that. I feel like I'll like being able to know how to settings will work
But at the same time I kind of like being able to use the camera to see things, not having to do settings first
EVF = electronic viewfinder
Yeah ik
modern EVFs, at least the Canon ones are really good. I would never go back to an OVF (Optical viewfinder)
Mmmm
I'll ask my dad if we can go to the camera shop today. Idk if he's willing to let me even look at the camera tho lmao
Even the sony ones are better than optical viewfinder imo
job + save up = camera. What you do with your own money is your business, not your dads
Hm
yes. But my prior reference was to a 11 year old EVF that had more lag than a 12800 baudem modem LOL

damn thats a lot of lag
Lol
anyways, I need to go. Shower and then 1.5 hour drive to work. Long day, 8 hours, so won't be home for near 12 hours.
kids are nice
Good luck!
ciao
But
PS my new website - www.davepastern.com. Been working on it for the past week and a bit. 🙂 now going, goodnight
Night
Dream run on the roads - 20 minutes early to my destination
Lovely!
Thank you
do a 1:1 crop or edit out the branch on the left
Ok thanks
also save the pic out as srgb
What’s that
so the colors are correct in the discord preview
on your pc and one or two external backup drives depending how much you care
Ok
I will put them all on a hard drive or something
I refuse to go to camera shops to avoid gas
And I looked at other options and I still think r6 is the best compared to like r10 and r7
Gas?
wanting to upgrade 🤢
gear acquisition syndrome, basically wanting more gear thinking it’ll make you a better photographer, but it’s never ending, hence GAS, always wanting more lmao
Remember the R10/7 are both APS-C crop cameras.
A good evf is amazing. You can see the exposure in real time, and a histogram too which is more convenient than older OVFs
Not always. Newer MLCs offer massive advantages over older entry level DSLRs from 10 years ago. That’s not GAS, but smart consumerism that enables a photographer
that’s GAS, if you don’t need it but you want it, it’s GAS 😭
especially as a hobbyist, if you’re earning money from it, it’s a different story
Yup
She told me that
Just was giving me options
I do need a newer camera
But my dad would say other wise. "It's just a hobby"
Anyway I made a spreadsheet and did some math
If we sold all our old stuff, it would be between 300-400$ maybe
And then I have some money
My dad would probably also pay for part of it
So if I get a job probably like 60-90 hours I need to work
Now I need to actually find a job lmao
You’ll be fine. Play to your strengths
If you need help with a CV/resume I am happy to help
remember she’s 14, jobs are very limited at this age 😭😭
Really? In Australia they are common
mhm, in most states its 16 in america
Ahh America
I think it's usually 16 in the usa
we know :(
yeah
the children yearn for the mines
It’s really pocket money for the kid
Takes financial stress off the parents
And let’s kids get some money to save for a car for some freedom
Rather than stressing already financially stressed parents
America is really backwards in so many areas
Anyway…
Finally got some birds!
Nice, i would suggest cropping in more on the birds
Thanks for the feedback!
Great photos Bungins ! I’m going to follow your instagram page Kremit.
Awesome! I like the picture above.
lol
i might work at my school
they have a coffee shop
but hours are very limited
like not even an hour a day
worth it
My friend won't tell me
I don't see why it wouldn't be
Yeah I'm gonna check the schedule and see if they have openings that work for me
But they might shut down if they can't get a new fridge
anyway I probably will forget about the camera im pretty busy the next few days
I have an online school day on friday. I need to practice a bunch because I have honor band on saturday and then someones party.
just pretending I have a life for a few days lol
my teacher is kinda mean and its making me want to quit.
also honor band has really high notes and its in cut time. 2 of the things I hate the most
oooo
what instrument do you play?
You can certainly get a job in america at 14
Especially if your parents are under a certain income
Actually u can get a job at 13 lmao
And as tort said 14-16 is limited hours but like they should be in school bruh
In some cases 13 you can get a job
Of course its not reported
Not a big deal really
Illegal Child labor
How do aussie kids juggle school and then casual p/t hours after school then….
Illegal adult labour
by limited hours i mean 14-16 year olds should not be allowed to work 40 hours a week
in most areas its 20
Wholly agreed
which is fine
of course they work after school
i think its very similar to australia is what im saying
personally i started working at 16
A lot will be working 4-5 hours after school every day of the working week plus at least 1 day of the weekend
That’s 54 hours per fortnight
I mean adult workers are really slaves (let’s be realistic here). What’s the difference if we let kids work at 14 than holding them back until they are 18 so they can be slaves…
just need to be more developed in school is my only gripe
year 2 of highschool they are men and women at that point
before that its iffy
What’s the minimum age to join the army?
Why do Americans have to wait until they are 21 to be able to legally drink alcohol when they can join the army at a much younger age and go fight a war and die…
A rather lack of consistency no?
That's a common argument but id rather see the military age raised than the drinking age lowered. There's genuine health reasons to not drink before your brain is fully developed.
never gonna happen tho
any feedback would be appreciated
When photographing through glass in a zoo, use your lens hood and shove your lens right on the glass, to avoid reflections coming in.
or a cpl may help too
i know the struggle, i used to photograph in zoos all the time when i didnt have a super tele
*im referring to the 4th pic
thx ill try
yes they are very round
they come from egg, they look like egg, then scream
i like the colours (or lack of) in this photo
matches the bird well
ill go through all of fall full of colour then winter comes and takes it away
always keeps it interesting
I call BS on that. No problems in every other country other than the US...so....
Euphonium
alcohol isn't healthy!
Aka baritone
wait you can read bass clef
Yes I can
I also understand some amount of treble. I play a little piano
also its tricky
After treble for like forever its weird to think about it
noice
Yeah
Vice versa
Yep it is nice. All the little feature on my phone were bugging
Also uhhh the charging port sorta didn't work so I had to exclusively wireless charging
Yippee
It was a good deal
Now I get a customize a new phone
What are you learning
Well piano now in more of an official capacity
Ah
I hated the two hand thing so I kinda gave up
It messed with my brain
I have a legit phone now :D not just some old phone that was willingly hacked to make the Sim card work lmao
In small and reasonable amounts it is fine. For example, Red wine has been shown to have benefits in fighting cholesterol and ultimately resulting in lower rates of coronary disease
Everything is good in moderation
But personally I have very bad experiences with alcohol. I can spare you the trauma dumping
Gorgeous!!!
Everyone is different. I’m a tea-totaller LOL
I mean I am under age. But I don't plan to be drinking it in the future
Communion was enough wine for me
I've seen what alcohol does to health and it scares me so uhh yeah I'm good.
Can do (if in excess). Do you drink Coca Cola and other soft drinks?
Cos they are far more insidious
Yeah I know shush
I don't really care about my own health
I try my best but like I can't cook
I would eat better but I don't see my dad making many homemade things
But soft drinks don't alter your state of mind
:p anyway what color phone case should I get
Cooking can be learnt
Purple!
Hmm I think green
They don’t, but the very high sugar content is responsible for the current high levels of obesity and diabetes
I'm so glad I don't have to go to school tomorrow
And I have exactly neither of those things
I don't drink it every day
Not even every week
Plus thousands of chemicals, none of which have been documented to be safe for human consumption
Well neither are many medicines and things
That doesn't mean they stop giving them out
I knew a woman who worked as a chemical engineer for Coca Cola. She refused to let her 2 daughters touch the stuff
She was adamant that the stuff was not safe for human consumption
Aqua
Sage
I am sage
My banner on my profile is my favorite color
😜
Wha?
You missed my comment
Sage = wise

Would be great if yall can drop a like, or even a follow
Ig algorithm has been a bitch to me lately
Why can't my body let me sleep innnnnn
I literally woke up earlier than I did yesterday. For school
Oh good I slept more
Trying my best to sleep
But cant 😂
Too excited for tomorrows birding trip to the seaaa
Yeah somehow I fell asleep earlier than I do normally
Gonna participate in the asian waterbird census 2024
I have schoolwork today to do
Turn off your device, go read or something and then sleep
Lol yeah, should probly do that.
Hoping for another white bellied sea eagle pic tomorrow.
i want to go birding so bad but i can't because it's -52 with the wind
same i'm at school rn
Darn they didn't cancel school??
nope
I probably would've stayed home anyway
I think I have pink eye lmao
But I have very important things this weekend that I've been waiting for forever
Eeee I hope I can like make it go away by the end of the day
Google says to go to the eye doctor.
Hmm no
do what you think i hope you feel good soon
yikes
I know 😭
i hope it's not that important
IT ISS
I've been waiting since November/October
It's a huge deal
Apparently you have to go to the doctor to get antibiotics
that's not good
I know
I never miss things
😭
Pray for me
This is my new phones quality with a pet shop parrot
700$ little man
700$ what
Parrot
Neat
same here
I better give get some ibuprofen atleast
Bro stupid phoneee
I'm typing with one hand
i hate typing on a phone it sucks
Neat
Love the dramatic lighting
Could always mask and put a different background in
Yeah true but it usually looks fake imho
Not if you shade it right
Beyond my skills!
I'm sorry I hope your day gets better
Yeah it will
:))
I work as a disability support worker looking after people with disabilities
Ahh yeah I would struggle with that personally
Twin brothers this morning. The support for the other twin didn’t fucking turn up
Not many options for background lol
Being with my mom for all those years showed me that. I'd die if I had to be a nurse.
Darn
So my boss tells me to take them both in my car to our respite house
I hate when people don't do their part
I only get paid to support my twin so the bastards were getting free support and not paying me
The 2nd twin wouldn’t get out of the car at the respite house
My eye seems a little better
So the 2nd twin starts thumping my car whilst inside
I hate children
He’s ripped off the aircon console for the rear seats
Ooo how dare they. How old?
Adults???
Ooh that doesn't seem right. They don't know how to not destroy people's property?
Yeah
No they don’t
ASD grade 3 non-verbal
That's sad
ASD requires set routine
If you change it they can escalate
The trick is to keep their routine
If you change, learn to spot an escalation before it happens
That’s where experience comes into play
I knew he would escalate but circumstances beyond my control made things worse and I was forced to just go along for the ride
Just fuckups from my bosses
And the cunts don’t take responsibility
Excuse the bad language
Very pissed off with them
Incompetent fuckers paid a lot of money to fuck shit up
You’ll learn this when you get a job
The higher up the ladder, the less work you do, the more you fuck up and the more money you get paid to do so
Whilst the workers at the bottom do all of the work
Pm
Have just finished lunch at Grill’d with my client. I look like Indiana Jones lol
But Indy with a cool beard
Fun
Perhaps like Gandalf
We bought chicken Alfredo for dinner
I shall be known as “Indyalf”
I’ve had the holy trinity once - Osprey, Brahminy Kite and wbse all on the same day
3-4 km from each other
2 Brahminy kites together (mating in sky), wbse 100m away!!!!
Osprey 3-4 km away
How you deal with white seagulls in a bright day? I took some pics and they came out too bright.
I would just turn down the exposure a bunch
What do you suggest? -3?
I’ll try that next time! Thanks!
Mhm
I did, but they were shit - 1.5 stops underexposed, and AF was off (was using my 7DII which was new at the time). Didn't have the 500f4 either.
are you using a MLC with an EVF? If so, it should have a histogram in the EVF. Try and underexpose to the point where highlights are just under the clipping point on the histogram.
yes
here's some gulls for you (they're actually Silver Gulls - seagulls is actually not a correct term to be using)
the first image, the highlights on the back of the neck are blown. I did my best, but it was very strong early morning sunlight on the bird. 1 thing I hate about the R3's EVF is that it doesn't show blown highlights on the histogram very well - it's VERY hard to see when they are blown. And I don't see blinkies in the EVF either, only after I've taken the shot on the rear LCD screen. I'm suspecting that I haven't set up my EVF information correctly though
fuck lightroom's bugs really fucking pissing me off
same bug has been in the software for fucking 6 years and still not fixed
gonna have to look at this laptop, says I'm using 50% of RAM (laptop has 16GB) and there's no way I'm using 8GB ram...
at least, not looking at task manager
simply underexpose by six stops
(this is a joke don't do this)
first ones pushing it a little
I’m using EVF
Yeah going out tomorrow to experiment with the exposure settings
watch the histogram. I don't know if the Sony EVF that you are using has blinkies etc...
something very weird is up with my laptop, I suspect a virus. 49% memory usage (16GB) with just Windows running...no other apps (other than Avast AV and CCleaner)
eject usb device hasn't been in the fast tray for 3 weeks now and no matter what I do I cannot get it to return
gonna be fun, fun fun backing shit up over the coming week or 2 and wiping everything and installing from fresh
I'd run GNU/Linux but Photoshop etc doesn't play nice with Linux, so that's a no go
could just be that half of your ram died
I unironically do that with my landscape shots
Too lazy to bracket + dont want to spend money on a GND
I trust in sony’s dynamic range
i saw 2 wedge tailed eagles dog fighting a whistling kite that lives in my neighbours paddock, my goodness it was a sight. so bummed i didnt have my cam 😭
new desktop wallpaper
i don't like that its too centered lol. i usually compose the image while cropping, but can't really crop here for full resolution.
also saw this bird, their feets turns reddish on mating season, its not peak mating season yet, but this bird is almost all the way there lol(other birds are still yellow to light pink)
Did you figure it out? What’s using half your RAM?
:p I know I always glare at people when they say sea gulls
sony calls it zebras, it should have if its a newish camera
didnt know this before, pretty cool
my a6000 from 2014 has zebras already
i think all sony mirrorless have that
My first birb with a real lens
have ran the microsoft ram checking software, found no problem. Microsoft's system information reports all RAM, but only half being used. But that is probably cos the system was live and running and using memory when I checked. I have downloaded memtest86 but need to create a boot disk etc
I need to get GND, but Nisi filterss aren't cheap 😦 (I have their v7 filter system but ND filters, not graduated).
Canon doesn't have zebras, only blinkies. Blinkies suck
No. But my system has been running like a dog for the past 2 months . I accidentally went to a dodgy site (was trying to go to maps.google.com.au and expected google to autocomplete but it didn't and I hit enter and voila, damage done. I had Avast running in the background and it alerted me to a virus on the site and said it blocked it, but maybe it fucked up)
After that, the BIOS did a few things on a few reboots to system updates that I had to make to Windows 11
so my concern is that the bios is fucked and even wiping the hard drives may not fix it
if it's installed a rootkit, that'll subvert any system software running live in memory, so I'd have to do a full virus scan from a live boot AV disk
I'm probably being paranoid though
Same here, just know rhat last trip. Since the javan pond herons are common here nonone is interested in them. Then the birb expert of the group explains to us the rare ones based on leg colour(to tell if the ayre local or migrant birds, or how well they are into the breeding season, etc).
Really learned a lot last trip, makes sense since they(the ones who invited me) are participating in the asian waterbird census 2024, and needs to make detailed observations(i think lol, or they might be just be very meticulous on birds AWC or not).
You should just do a fresh install of windows at this point
yes, that was my next step. I'll check RAM usage on a bare install, no 3rd party apps installing/running to see what the RAM does. if it's saying 50% memory used on a bare install, something is up, either faulty hardware or a rootkit
it's frustrating cos this new laptop is now slower than my old 1 (AMD 5600 vs 10 year old Intel i5)
new laptop also has a NVME root drive (PCIe v3 though) which will be faster than the SSD on the old laptop
in I/O performance that is
Last year i had frequent blue screens
Turns out hdd was dying lol
Lost all of my non backed up data
That’s definitely is not normal. The reinstall of windows shouldn’t take very long. I like to do a fresh install twice a year.
dont you have to redownload all your apps and stuff if you do that?
Yes but I don’t have a lot of apps/programs so it does not take a lot of time to redownload them
Could I get feedback please?
Get lower I think
Will do thank you
like as low as possible btw
laying on the ground low
will get a better perspective of shorebirds that way
and also let you shoot an image with a shallow depth of field without having a 600 f4
yes, but it's only AV/chrome/pixinsight and lightroom/photoshop, so not much
I have Oblivion installed actually too, so that as well
no, it shouldn't, it's the bloody updates that kill you LOL...15 years in IT, and have played with more O/S than probably anyone on this server
some of them are a bit too tight in the frame, but nicely exposed and sharp, bonus reflections and poses. Looks like Whimbrels and Pied Stilts.
it's not always possible. I'm looking to make a home made groundpod over the coming 2 weeks as funds alllow so that I can get very low and use my Gimbal to get low shots.
How do you determine your lens sharpest aperture?
I see some people shoot in 5.6 others 8
download a test chart image (zeiss star chart may help). Print it to A3 and mount it on foamboard. Bluetak it to a wall. Step back and take images at various f stops and check the results.
I use Reikan FoCal but it was gifted to me so I didn't have to pay for it. I would have most likely purchased it anyway though tbf.
check out these birds
I like this one
thanks!!
reflections
Man I really need to get that 200-600 so I can do wildlife again
thats awesome man what
goodness gracious
planning to do this too, diy groundpod
not uncommon, especially with some of these cameras that have high frame rates...
yeah was spamming since the wind was blowing, was hoping for an epic moment lol.
just like this bird, i thought it was gonna take off. it didnt.
Great shot! Where did you go for this trip? I need new spots to go birding
Also for the indecisive like me
gotta get ALL of the possible compositions I can think of while the moment lasts
boating around muara angke.

the sky here motivates me to wake up earlier for birding
way better than plain blue/white sky.
pray and spray we call it here 😉
Snow tomorrow but I might go see if I can find more eagles
rescued a female faiywren this arvo, not sure if she'll make it or not. Was on the ground on the dirt track that I was on and covered in ~20 ants
picked her up, cleaned the ants off and had a brisk 700m walk back to the car, cuddling her and carrying my camera gear
have dropped her off at the RSPCA wildlife hospital (was a 30 minute drive)
just doing what a decent person should do
Heres an owl
snowing a bit too hard to go out I think. Damn
still in the process of getting a better lens so had to use an older nikon 70-300mm no VR :( but birb
what a cutie
one flew into the back of my head
sadly the little Fairywren passed away (had to be euthanised). @mint warren
F
yeah a Woodpecker once landed on my head for a brief moment
So how do you guys actually find birds
I went out into the woods near me a bit before golden hour where i always hear tons of birds and saw a fleeting blue jay that promptly hid from me and nothing else
Boomer birding pages
find one for your local area or state on FB where the boomers post their bird pics, you'll see what they're seeing and usually where
I find them to have feathers. And a beak. Wings too. 😛
In all seriousness, Facebook groups are great. ebird and merlin bird ID help too.
Rare bird alerts on twitter/facebook. There are regional discords as well
Some regional Audubons have mailing lists or bulletin boards
Once you get to know locals and they know you’re not a piece of shit out to harm anything they will share alerts and locations typically
Just found these pics from last summer, never edited the for some reason
(Open in browser for more detail)
pretty birds
So sharp wow
I haven’t been able to find any small birds so far since Christmas. I’ve literally seen 1 and I took a out of focus picture of it
High Pass filter magic haha
Editing can make a crazy difference
Yeah theres way less of them in the Winter
That makes me feel better definitely 😂
I sit by my open window and watch for anything
I really miss doing wildlife photography I absolutely need the 200-600 soon
Dang. I got the sigma 150-600 c for Christmas
Sick!
My Mom paid part of my new cam for Christmas
Wouldnt have been able to get it otherwise
Now I just need a wildlife lens
What happened to your old one?
I switched systems
My dad is the one who helps me with photography stuff sometimes 🙃
Had a Canon 250d before
Ah
I use a t7 😭 🤮
Combined with the sigma 150 isn’t the best for af
🫠
Still have that cam to be fair I could still go out but it wasnt that fun and now after using the a7iii it'll be even less fun lmao
Still a great lens tho
Definitely it’s pulsing is just bad from what I heard and felt. Besides that it’s the best budget wildlife lens
Yeah…my dream
Going from the t7 with its dogshit autofocus to a better camera will be amazing istg
Yeah…what’s the difference
Better af, better Video capabilities
But the a7iii's af is already crazy good
Especially when paired with a good lens
Video??? Who cares
Definitely
The only advantage I would actually profit from would probably be bird eye af
But imo the a7iv isnt worth 1k more
crazy how expensive those get
I got my a7iii for 1.2k Brand new
Including a 50mm that I sold for 120€
So basically 1k
How tf
THAT makes more sense lol
Oh and I also got a backpack for free because my order was over 500€
So a7iii + 50mm + backpack for effectively 1.2k
wtf 😭😭
Crazy deal, couldnt pass on it
Definitely not 😭
Shop discount + Sony cashback + gift because my order was over 500€ lmao
And then I got the tamron 28-75 for 600 instead of 800€
Already used all my luck for this year
I think you’re using all of mine
😭😭
Oh do those really make a difference? I havent been able to get really good feather detail with the 200600. Ive gotten really crisp skin textures on primates but not feather detail on birds…
Maybe im just not close enough
Or distortion from the atmosphere
Being close enough is definitely very important
Those pics were cropped just a tiny bit and thats 450mm ffeq
Left one isnt cropped at all actually
Could def use that eye af on the high end models tho 😍
Ah i see
Yeah 100% its very good
I also use an a7iii and it gets kinda difficult at times to set focus on the eyes
Especially when the dof is so shallow
So far ive been using the lock on expandable spot
Yeah it can definitely be challenging but its possible
Sometimes changing to small spot for better accuracy
One of the main things that made me upgrade is low light performance
Dude i went to full frame from micro four thirds. Insane improvement
I can easily go up to iso 25600 in some situations without really worrying about noise while iso 800 was the highest I could go with my 250d
Yeah
I think i used to cap at iso6400 with lumix g9
Now my cap is set at 12800
Could go higher but usually thats enough for most cases
Yeah true
not sure if i shared this since idk if i was the happiest with this shot that day but 4 macaws in flight
and heres another 3 of them which were a bit closer
Yooo thats so cool
Where'd you take that?
this was at a wildlife park in florida
lots of other birds too (all freeflying, well, except for the emu)
What did you set your exposure composition setting to?
not really a thing i change, usually 0 or 1
Came out great!
Thanks
Lucky!
Does anyone use a gimbal head when doing bird photography?
some do but most stick to handheld
I do, but only on some areas
If i will be waiting in a hide, or waiting for a bird near its nest, or early morning/late noon shots where its darker and i need more stability. Or if i want to record a video.
But 70-80% i go handheld.
I’m on a monopod with a monogimbal probably 60% of the time.
-15c but it's sunny so I went outside to find birds and I only got pics of one but that's fine
gotta wait for the cam to defrost
It’s raining right now 😦
cropped a lot
In my car right now waiting for the rain to calm
theyre kicking us outta nature
nature sucks anyway
nono without birds there'd be no nature
goes both ways
what if birb is in tree
What metering mode setting do you use for bird photography?
I just use the default multi metering
Works fine for pretty much everything for me
The important thing for me personally is to keep an eye on the zebra stripes. A little is ok, too much means its overexposed
Theres a setting for the zebra stripes on sony cameras to make it measure overexposure for RAW files instead of jpeg, cuz the default settings is for jpeg and that means it isnt considering the full dynamic range of a raw file
I’m going to look into that.

@cursive linden
Choose the most appropriate exposure using Sony's Zebra feature. Photographers shooting in the Raw file format have a little highlight recovery headroom, so the optimum level for being warned of overexposed highlights (that cannot be recovered in Raw editing software) is to create a Custom level with the appropriate settings. In this video tutor...
Ah perfect thank you so much
@dark minnow what lens did you use for that picture in #🦀・creatures ??
which pic?
the chickadee one?
yes
efs 55-250 stm
mfd
thats kinda wild, i use that lens
most of my pics from that are completely out of focus to to me being to close
thanks
I love sitting in the freezing rain for two hours waiting for an owl to come back. Should have brought my pop up blind.
Found some hawks but they don't sit still very long and the light is terrible today 😦
Nothing worth keeping but to hell with these low level flying fucks.
check out Duade Paton's videos on this pulsing issues. It doesn't 100% get rid of it, but it does minimise it as much as possible.
a73? It doesn't have animal eye detect, just people...
I know that lol
Meant overall af not just eyes
and it does have dog/cat eye af
yes, but quality optics is even more important.
True
not much good for birds I'm afraid. I have a mate who has the a73...
Of course not thats why I said Dog/cat eye af
Because those are pretty much the only animals it focuses on
yeah but it's no help for wildlife imaging 😦
fuck it is hot
32.6c at 10am already. Meant to hit 39c today. That's 90f and 102f respectively. Humidity is at 65% so that 32.6c feels like 37.1c.
I've lived here since 2007 and December was easily the hottest that I can remember and January has been even hotter. Traditionally February is the hottest of the 3 months, so I'm dreading the coming month. It starts to taper off a bit in March, but it won't cool down to the start of May here.
Winter will be June/July and a part of August and then Summer starts up again. I hate this heat.
That 39c, with humidity adjusted will probably feel like 46c at a guess. We've had a near week of minimum nightly temperature 23c with high humidity, so even hotter feels like temps. My room was 30.1c last night at 70% RH at 1am. (I don't have aircon). By 8.30am it was already 30.1c...will probaby hit 33c today, which is the hottest I have ever seen my room in 17 years.
Could I get feedback on this please?
I feel like you added way too much contrast
Too much?
Yah
Way too much
Its so dark
And the whites are too white
What does the original look like?
Look here
Its totally blown out
All the detail is just gone
I think I also didn’t have the proper exposure settings.
Always make sure that you have your highlights exposed properly
Then in processing you can bring back some of the shadows
Send the other one
send raw file if you have
if you dont shoot raw, shoot raw, gives you the most flexibility when editing
I have the raw files
vingette?
slight one
hmm
I cant bring back the detail on the bird because its already washed out
interesting choice, not the greatest fan of vingetting, thats just me
but yeah this is true
Lol
he does have the raw file if you wanna try saving it
Vignetting is good when your trying to highlight a subject in the middle
Ill give it a go
but yeah i've learned that if you're shooting white birds, underexpose
@cursive linden
Always underexpose
for dark birds too?
No dark birds
yeah
I agree it’s just that it was super cloudy and assumed that I didn’t need to adjust the exposure comp
Because if you overexpose highlights then its gone forever
i'll give it a shot in my photos, but generally i stay away from vingette
only on digital :)
film is the opposite, which is interesting
You can also add a linear vignette for a diff typeof vignette
As in if you have a subject in the middle you could darken the edges of the pic
But not vignette
So th effect is cooler
But then you have to mask and all that
I cba rn to do that
Can you send the raw pls
I’m away from my computer and using the my phone. Let me see if I can do it.
Like this?
Also @cursive linden if you're not sure when your over exposing. Use the histogram on the camera. If the lines touch the right hand side of the graph, then ur overexposing
Yh but it doesnt look good there
Ur subject is too squished
if its touching the right
yeah i get what you mean tho
Then we can bring back detail
Found it
Wrong roundness, not enough feathering
Not the correct color
Just not a nice effect with the vignetting here
these are not raws
raw file wouldnt come with a preview in discord
anythign that shows as an actual image in discord is a jpg
Darn I don’t know how I would send them via my phone
probably cant
Thats 45 KB
most phones dont allow raw files to be saved in camera roll
Anyways whatever its fine
Chill with it
But in this case, I upped the shadows and black a bit, and decresed highlights
Then color graded the green and orange
Anyways I gtg
Got an exam in around 3 hrs
Adios
Thanks for your help!
Do you generally want to under expose for most birds or just white birds?
Its not about birds
Its about underexposing highlights
So that they're not just white
So that you can recover detail
In any kind of photography
get lower. Highlights are OK, but the rest of the image is underexposed by around half a stop I'd say. too much contrast and saturation. Noisy as well (did you run any NR?)
Hey Dave
no, only if highlights will be clipped. underexposed an image that has darker content in it, will clip the shadows which is equally as bad.
upload the RAW files to google drive...then share the file to everyone in google drive (anyone who has the link) and post the link here
hey mate
How’ve you been
just white birds where highlights will be clipped. if the highlights aren't being clipped, increase the exposure.
Ohh jeez it’s different over here in NY lol
Ohh jeez that’s warm
It’s like 12°F over with a wind chill of -5°F
@cursive linden if you can send the RAW files, I'll have a crack at them and see what I can do.
yeah I can imagine. I much prefer the cold to the heat
you can add layers, but you can't remove them (unless you are Shrek, or an onion)
Yeah haha
I always wanted to get a Timelapse of a storm without rain
would like to get some more lightning shots
Mhm
I guess I should work on some images haen't touched anything for like nearly 2 weeks lol
not htat I have anyting really good to process
had some wedgie in flight shots but they were a long way away and sadly, the images aren't great 😦
sky was shit too
I haven’t really been able to do some shoots lately since I’ve been at home and busy at work
as I said, crap
very heavy crop, lacks contrast but I CBF trying to fix it
it has zero potential to be a decent shot
still, my only wedgie in flight shot, so...
better than nothing
better than mine
That’s how I felt about all the hawk shots. I culled them all anyway though.
to be fair to me, the sky was shit and it was a very long way away. If only they'd (there was a pair) had come closer
yeah. I'm at the point where I set really high standards for my images now and if an image doesn't meet those, it's crap
I'm probably way too harsh on myself
Oriental Dollarbird. Closest I've had 1 to me yet - a real pity about the sky (same day as the wedgie, same location). I could crop this, but i don't think it's worth doing so
got an olive backed oriole same day...same shitty blown background
a pity, cos it's a nice pose and eye contact :/
just 3 weeks of shit images and it's pissing me off
have had 2 outings, but nothing great from those and haven't even bothered to import those images from the card
pised at Canon too...their card naming system is crap
so my R3 has 2 card slots...1 for cfexpress and 1 for sd...cfexpress is typically named card 1 and sd card 2...
but, when I take the cfexpress card out to import images, it names sd card 1...and when I put the cfexpress card back in after importing, sd stays card 1 and cfexpress is now card 2, instead of going back to their original fucking slot numbers
ended up deleting some osprey video footage that was reasonably good cos of this
just inconsistent UI logic sometimes from them (UI is still better than Sony and Nikon combined imho)
Brown Falcon...kinda meh. Again, crappy background sky 😦
Sky replacement
CBF
ew
No it was cloudy that day
so less light, hence higher ISO, hence more noise in the image. if you can provide a RAW file, I'm happy to have a go at processing it for you. I'm confident that I can produce a better result.
It’s ok I do appreciate your help Dave
Do you try to look at the histogram as much as you can during shooting?
Got some pretty good shots that im honestly proud of today
Finally got some crisp feather detail
Was able to get close enough and the light was great
My porch is a feeding frenzy but they’re too close for me to take any pictures
I guess too close isn’t the real problem, the problem is there’s glass between us haha
I know youre talking to Dave, but personally, I don’t bother looking at the histogram. For landscape photography sure but not for birding. Things just happen so quickly that all I care about is capturing the moment. I have my ISO on auto and use Exposure Compensation to make swift adjustments with the help of Zebras to quickly identify blown highlights.
Hope that helps
Besides, Sony’s dynamic range rocks so I can always fix it up in editing
And in relation to IQ / sharpness / dynamic range you also want to have your ISO at a reasonable level, not too high. For me this means worrying more about the shutter speed. You need to identify the shutter speed you need based on the situation you’re faced with. For instance, for larger birds you go with slower SS, and for smaller birds faster SS. It’s an inverse relationship because smaller birds generally move faster.
May I ask what you mean by "with the help of Zebras"?
It’s a tool in sony (and possibly other brands) cameras used to show parts of the image that are overexposed / have blown highlights. They’re called Zebras because they show up as zebra stripes in your screen/viewfinder
Like that
Ah thanks! I will need to Google but don't think mine has that.
Just finished editing a pic from today’s birding session
I am trying so hard to replicate Jan Wegener’s colors
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
crazy good well done
saturation to max ?
although i really enjoy his videos, i find his editing the most cringe
Aww that’s a shame. I love the way he does his colors, particularly the backgrounds. It adds a lot to the image and since then Ive been attempting to add a certain color to the background that would support the main subject.
I watched an editing vid of his but stopped watching cuz he apparently doesn’t use lightroom
what he does is easier in ps
still hate how unnatural it looks
looks more like drawings or paintings
i also dont really like the fact all his shots are basically perches and food to attract birds
Ahh i see. Then i’ll get the adobe photography bundle some time this year. Still waiting for my mobile subscription to end
i've got the "free version" personally
Thats exactly the stuff i love though
I love pictures that just look very perfect and clean.
This i agree
eh, matter of taste ig
Nothing too special today
u gonna go to the hanging gardens?
Hanging gardens?
Oh you mean in Gardens by the bay
I think some of the other areas in Gardens by the bay are better known for birds
second picture is great lol
tried for a bettle angle, couldnt find it
Gardens by the Bay at Singapore Marina South is known for its botanical and floral display but unknown to most is that it also has 120 species of birds recorded there.
This is a short overview of the different varieties that can be found at the different sectors within the vast garden grounds.
This is an updated (Apr 21) version to correct some ...
He goes over each area of gardens by the bay and what you can find
it's a nice feeling
DR even with the Sony, has limits. if the histogram is shown in the EVF, there's no harm in looking at it. not all cameras have zebras either. Canon has blinkies, and they are very hard to spot on a bird in the EVF...as to ISO, I will disagree with you here. Perhaps that is the case with your Sony, but not all cameras are the same. I can shoot at very high ISO with my R3 and get great DR and noise performance and sharpness.
ISO 8000 thanks.
8000 is still ok to me lol. I go all the way up to 12800 and well… the images are usable for my (not very high) standards. But definitely not great
ISO 12800
8000 is cranking the ISO
Mind you I dont have AI noise reduction
that bower bird shot was still very clean even prior to NR AI being used
Well perhaps its a sensor thing
definitely
Higher end cameras certainly should have better iso performance
I use an a7iii so theres that
it's sensor design
a7iii is bsi but not stacked and is now 4 years old...
aka very old tech now
what about the a7rv for birb photography
Yeah im thinking that would be my next upgrade. How is it @fleet mica ?
The AI AF
I like mine, but don’t know much about its sensor tech. It would be a dream to have an A7R camera with global shutter 😎
How’s the Eye AF accuracy for birds? And the noise performance
I read somewhere that high res sensors tend to have more noise
Finally got some good ones, just some house sparrows
It’s okay but the noise can get a little annoying when it’s shaded out. I’m sure that would all go away if I used a 600 f/4 instead of a variable aperture zoom
third one is great
got a nice vid too

Higher shutter speed = more noise
I srsly need ai denoise so i dont have to worry so much about noise
it's not that big of a gme changer
a lot of detail and sharpness is still lost
comes out looking toasted
One day, I’ll get a nice crisp shot of a small BIF
For now, im happy with birds on a stick
That's a great photo!
Is it too yellow? The image as a whole i mean
I have a tendency to edit with warmer tones but i sometimes am worried that its too yellow
And sometimes apple’s auto night mode just completely messes with my editing lol. I look back at some photos and get surprised seeing how overly yellow they are, quickly adjust the edit in lr only to realize i was on night mode
plenty of resolution. It's not a stacked sensor, so rolling shutter will be an issue on some shots. maximum 10fps so slow as a wet weekend LOL...
I like cropping it’s fun tbh
it's about the same as any Canon AF on any Canon MLC...people are harping on about it endlessly like it's superb. It's middle of the park.
why? Sony's A9III has poor DR and high ISO performance vs a modern stacked BSI sensor...the R3 kills the A9III for IQ...
Aw boo
smaller the pixel, the worse the DR and high ISOI performance typically...so, yeah....
i'm perfectly happy with 24mp on full frame then : )
i see no reason to push it higher
maybe a little more for cropping
sure, but it is better to get closer to the bird...
hey, I didn't make up the rules of physics...even Sony has to abide by them.
24mp is NOT enough. Unless you can get close to the bird (i.e. relatively tame, or using a hide/ghillie suit) any cropping is going to reduce the pixels on the bird and you'll lose detail. 45mp is a nice sweet spot and that's why most birders are using a R5
I got my first Peregrine Falcon yesterday, albeit a long way away
it did fly (towards me) but those things are fucking fast
my mark 1 500f4 is very slow to grab initial focus, so it was a big "fuck you" to me LOL
Yeah 61mp sounds like too much for me. The files are humongous and transferring them also takes considerably more time. Hoping that sony announces the a7v with around 40MP. The a7iv is already quite nice with 33MP, but im gonna wait for an a7v with hopefully more res and AI af
Yoo i was just watching a few Peregrine Falcon kill montages earlier on youtube. Really cool stuff
40mp is a nice sweet spot. Sony tends to hamper their cameras with poor FPS...sad really
I saw 1 with a goose in the desert last night. Was NOT impressed. That's just animal abuse
