shit, you're right LOL
I got a buff banded rail a bit earlier in the same location and my brain was thinking same
yeah that RBE delivery is SWEET
URBE Eats
I saw some swans!
I'll post them in a moment. I'm not sure if they're any good
I don't see those cool colorful birds
I think the left one was better, but they were across the swamp and I didn't have that good of an angle
Bee eaters are the most fun birds to watch imo
Disagree. Kingfishers are
kingfishers are also the loudest
Fun
Their call isn't that annoying
It's like an alarm clock to tell me it's photo time
something different from me - I deliberately underexposed this image ot protct the highlights/Whites of the Egret. Decided to mask and desaturate the background to turn the image into a colour + BW hybrid image.
Oo I love it
Kingfishers are cool, but watching Bee Eaters hunt is crazy fun
They're so precise
you can even hear a "SNAP" when they hit a bee or other insect
White throated Sparrow
Oooo
Same with fly catchers
Well, almost. Sometimes they're cool. I think the buddys already left tho
an old shot that I thought was too soft and couldn't be salvaged. Topaz Sharpen AI for the win. VERY happy.
haha same fucking thing i just did
and we posted at the same time
was slightly not sharp
my image that is
I just saw your image in the nature gallery and liked it LOL!
I really like your shot mate. Very nice BW conversion.
kind of has a tmax 400 feel to it
you should
Do any of you use ghillie suits? Does it help? 😂
I don't. I just lay or crouch and make suddle movements
Hey everyone, I know this is a ton of pics, but which one looks the best out of these? I need one of them for the month of August in the calendar I'm making...
It depends what the other photos you've chosen
Because you want some variety
gotcha
And if you choose out of those 3, that's more unique than the other 11, then it'll be cool
ok, that makes sense, thanks for the tips!!
I think maybe not 1 because it's really close up to be used in a calender imo
I don't make calenders lol 😂 but thats what I think
So I'd say 2 because August isn't really cold lol unless it is where you are. And the last one isn't the right season of bird for August
😆 yeah me neither, but thank you, you actually just helped me a lot!
Ofc! I love helping others
I would buy a calender but my grandma already found a bird calender for me lol
You could also do 4 but I'm not sure if the loon photo is sharp enough to look professional. Still a great photo tho
last year, my grandma bought a bird calender for me right when I gave her my own😆
agreed, Im kinda leaning away from that one a little
Cool. You could ask a family member, show them the proto type and see what their view is. Because a lot of customers won't be photographers, so when you see a high quality photo, they may think it's boring
Maybe they are bird people but don't take photos
Like I sent a really sharp photo to my friend and was like, you're saying I couldn't be professional wildlife photographer and they were like, uhhhh well
And I had to send some more interesting photos, not as sharp, to prove my point
The calender my grandma got was from Audubon
Whoa, I didnt know they made calendars, I have no Idea where the calendar my grandma got me is from, but it got a few bird names wrong lol
1
6 is so close but the foreground is too blurred imo
Disappointing lol. Probably arent even their photos
But if its supposed to represent august maybe 3 ngl
Well maybe but 2 is really interesting to me
I thought 1 but, if it's a big calender it might mess with the sharpness and 2 is more zoomed out, so I feel it would fit the calender better
It is going to be a 11x8.5" calendar
3 is not that interesting
Is that standard ?
These are the photos Audubon put in their calendar
It's also like a donation for helping birds, so they donate money from the profit of these calenders
I just think 3 represents august better
1 is the best picture overall
I think its called letter size...? not too sure
Yeah i guess
Yeah if you look at the photo I sent, all the photos have a lot of personality
Something of interest
yeah, I was just looking at that...
I love the little snowy chick (not sure species, sorry) but that's not the best fit for August
But anyway, yeah. That's my input!
yeah, it seems a bit too white and pale for august... It is a Piping Plover chick btw
Oh okay cute
they are so little in person
I hope I can make calenders in the future! I don't have many great quality photos and I have to build my account more and get more experience first
Its honestly a whole lot of fun in my opinion, I use a company called Lulu for printing, and their quality is great!
Do you have any examples photos of what the inside looks like? I'm curious about how you set it up
the inside of the calendar?
Yes
I actually dont have one at my house currently, but I think I have a picture of it standing up...
here are a few pics of the old one
I dont think I have a picture of the inside, but Lulu sets up the dates and numbers, you just have to select pictures, and create the front and back cover...
Cool!
went to pond for duck, found duck, pretty happy with the photo
not my most difficult photo ive done, just think it looks nice
i love all of them
awesome
Yeah same. I was just trying to give them my opinion on which one was best for August
could just make 6 pages for August idk
Lmao
Nice crop too
thanks, ducks are always fun and friendly
i've never even seen an owl so
Yeah I've seen them but never in a photo opportunity
That's all I want. None of the birds are cooperating today
And instagram shows me all owls when Im trying to like other people's posts
I'm gonna try to walk up in the morning and look for owls... Or Kingfishers
That's the magic
my strat was going to a birds of prey show
You have to go at morning and dusk
And find their roosting spot
But uhm they hate me and there's hunters in the woods now so I'll never see them
Did some overcast photgraphy
Musk Duck Male
The musk duck (Biziura lobata) is a highly aquatic, stiff-tailed duck native to southern Australia. It is the only living member of the genus Biziura. An extinct relative, the New Zealand musk duck or de Lautour's duck (B. delautouri), once occurred on New Zealand, but is only known from prehistoric subfossil bones. It was about 8% longer than t...
first time getting a frogmouth on photo
Yay!
Aren't they lovely? 😄😍 My favorite birds
They are so cool to watch. Pretty frisky tho
I saw one yesterday but as soon as I got into position to shoot, it flew off
thats how it be sometimes
Aw adorable blue tit
lovely tit you got there
Lmao
pics from today
the last one was 20000 iso lol
the bird in the red bush was actually from my driveway before driving to the park
cardinal for me. #1 no space around the bird, #2 is soft as is #3. #4 no eye contact with the bird. #6 is my 2nd fave
congrats!
BSK from today. Got a bunch of keepers of this beauty. Got a Brown Falcon and Nankeen Kestrel too, but the poses etc were inferior to the BSK
and another from today
spot the clone work and generative AI fill 😉
this is a very heavy crop sadly. I envisioned an image, but with the creek fenced off, and the ducks very very nervous so I wasn't going to get any closer...wasn't going to get my envisioned image sadly. A real pity.
gen ai stretch canvas to the right?
Yes. Could do some clone patchwork to make it less obvious
adding some grain would help a lot
Perhaps. Was taken at ISO800 so was very noise free
yeah, adding grain helps a lot in hiding gen ai in general
Ah. I get you. Can always revisit the image, but it was more of a stopgap than anything
And practice my cloning
Oh cool! I love cormorants. I haven't had an opportunity to photograph them yet though
There is a bunch of them on a river next to where I work
Sweet. Do you have any other shots?
I have a lot of unedited ones
More-morants
Oooo
my best bird photo
Ooo what type of sparrow is it?
I wanna say a juvenile house sparrow but im not 100% sure
Okay. Let me try, where was the photo taken?
thats a song sparrow
That's what I was gonna say, I was just double checking
Because I usually only see darker song sparrows by me
im shit at bird identification lol my fault
No worries! I was just curious
Also sometimes there are birds that look exactly the same but like hundreds of miles apart.
This was taken in New England for reference
Oh they have song sparrows in New England?
Ohhhh sorry I forgot the range for a moment
Cormorants are fun. I only have this hastily cropped one though.
nice work to get the wings in the water like that
Thanks, not sure I’ll ever edit it but they are cool birds. They can dive for crazy long too can’t they? For a bird anyway.
2 of my fave cormorant images
I believe so
right is a darter tho
ah yes, true. I was in a rush this morning
easy mistake tbh
they got that same "no waterproofing for better diving, has to dry itself off to fly effectively"
yes, I know, but the darters are usually bulkkier and bigger and longer necks
beaks are different too
still plenty to do here at home on my day off work...FFS I'd like a day off work where I'm not running around like a chook with its head cut off
bbl
I love GCKIs!
I’ve only ever seen an owl pre-dawn, about 4am and it was way too dark for my camera to capture it
there was another kingfisher right outside my bedroom window when I got home from work
it was being loud
A pair of Little Corellas.
@fleet mica Gonna try get anything for Wrensday?
Yikes. Now I'm reminded of the winter wren I'll probably never see again
Idk what I'm gonna do.. it gets too cold and snowy for photos and there's hardly any birds. I don't wanna lose all my following because Im too lazy to post
sadly no, up at 5.30am for a 6.30 departure to get to work by 8am...working all the way through to 4pm and will be dog tired...have had a **** of a night due to this God forsaken fucking heat.
I did go out yesterday arvo after another shitty day chasing my tail getting shit down on my day off work...local colony of Black Kites. Testing a theory. Up to date, I have shot BIFs (large raptors) with these settings - f7.1 and 1/2000. I am not convinced at the sharpness of my shots, so have tested 1/4000 and f8 and I think it'll be better, but just based on the LCD screen on the back of the camera. Didn't get a chance to d/l the images to the laptop and check with faststone
So got some interesting shots to work with
will report back soon, may be going out for lunch soon
nice!
Wow! Pretty birds, I wish I had more colorful birds here
Kingfisher!
this bird is everywhere but never got a photo of one in nature really until today
Crow?
Yeah
Yeah same, I want photos of crows
He has a Mohawk lmao
Adorable
Wren-neds-day, make sure you have the stupid spelling to go with it
Those are cool! Very cute little birds
So cute 🥰 I hope I see some cool birds in the future
What is the best one out of all of these? (Cedar Waxwings)
Im thinking 2nd or 3rd, but its kind of a toss-up
Omg how they're lovely photos
That gives me lion king vibes
little birb
thanks, i got pretty close up to this one although its still a pretty small bird
Is it a 70-200 f/2.8 or a prime
Cute birdie
its the 100-500, pretty much just as good as the rf 70-200 in terms of sharpness
Wow how much is it
But f8 isn’t great
With Sony you can get 70-350 and maximum f6.3 for an even smaller price tag
Ah but it’s apsc well that explains the price drop
F8 is only like 2/3 of a stop behind 6.3
Plus ff and 50mm extra
And it's sharper
i wouldnt worry too much about it being f/8, my lens isnt much brighter at 7.1, i think this makes both of these lenses much lighter to carry just in general
stark difference if you compare a 2.8, 6.3 vs 8 is just calling a small hole tinier
IS + IBIS will have you covered either way im sure as far as iso is concerned during daylight/afternoon so id probably be worried more for DoF
this one here i actually used a tc so its at f/9 or f/10
handheld at 1/100 at 600mm lol
if you look a bit close you can tell theres motion blur but i tried to hide it and no ones pointed it out yet so i think just as a thumbnail it came out fine (couldve increased the iso a little i suppose, was at 320)
looks like the canon is 23mm longer but they're the same weight
id call that worth it for an extra 50mm FL
the canon one is also full frame too if that part matters
r6 being much cheaper than before who knows lol
The 100-500 isn’t huge either really
Probably smaller than the older 70-200
all that power and it weighs like 3lb, world needs more light zooms lol
Awww
got a male mallard this time, interesting seeing the orange fall colours in the water
there's so many waterfowl birds here, cormorants, ducks of all kinds, seagulls, shorebirds, will never run out of them
yeah i absolutely love the 100-400. And it being f8 i really dont find an issue, if you get close enough the bokeh will still be really sweet and creamy. Also, its imo the most versatile lens out there, meaning you can shoot both macro and birds easily, because of the insanely short minimal focus distance. As a naturalist that's the most important part for me, to be able to shoot insects at my feet. Also it's incredibly sharp for the price.
the 800 f11 i dont like personally, iq is rather poor, af kinda sucks, and dof really takes a hit at f11. also minimal focus distance is 6m :/
also, as said, the 100-400 has an insane IS, this was shot at 1/20s hand held, at 25600 iso on my r6
and, even if its not the topic, as i said it's awesome too for macro imo
i actually use it more than the 100mm f2.8 for macro lol
easier working distance for most subjects
Yeah this photo specifically is super sharp when you process it
Its great
Butterfly one too
Similarly, 100-500 can do this stuff as well, almost like they’re two versions of the same lens lol
I’ve gotten extremely close to birds with it for fun
This is the bird in question, a tiny fluff with wings, def can be used for macro and I have for plants
Chickadee! Adorable
I couldn’t do this stuff on my sigma though I tried anyway
Fun to get right close up
Wait what sigma?
The 150-600
Oh same! We probably already talked about this lol
Was cleaning the lens too, really does get tiny when you take things off
100-400 is slightly smaller
in Australia, it is very hard to tell between the Torresian Crow and Australian Raven.
f8 is fine. I mostly shoot at f7.1 or f8.
that is the cutest!
Sacred Kingfisher from Friday. VERY happy with this shot
700mm as close it'd let me get
if that rumoured 200-800 is indeed real, and will take a 1.4x TC and has excellent optical quality and AF, I think I might just invest in it and keep my mark 1 500f4 prime instead of selling the latter and using my tax to upgrade to the mark 2 version
it all comes down to if it's sharp and has fast AF. Rumours are saying it won't be L series and no weather sealing, the latter of which would be stupid design for a wildlife lens
50/50 on whether the AF motors will be STM or USM
I'm hoping the latter, STM will be shit on a bigger and longer lens
very based friend
:O kingfisher!
Yippee. I want to go look at birds but it is 25°F
Very sad about the weather
Nice pic. On my trip to the mangroove forest today, another photographer got a kingfisher pic, i waited at the same spot for almost an hour and got nothing
.
Is STM really that bad on Canon?
that's how it goes in nature photography sometimes
no it isn't, but STM trying to drive AF on a big lens is asking for trouble (torque issues)
some sony lenses have quad linear motors for af
I’ve used f mount swm stuff before. But I’d be hard pressed to notice too much a difference. I’ve been spoiled by the PF glass I guess.
I'm rather cautious about it
There’s definitely a difference between my old 600f4 ed and my 800pf don’t get me wrong. It’s just not enough of one that I ever even think about it.
Yeah, and thats what keeps me getting back every weekends. I think being close to nature is what makes me loves this category of photography.
nuthatch
a few more from Friday/Saturday
mmm I was thinking white faced heron, but ebird says pacific heron...it kind of looks like a juvenile pacific heron with some further research, but I'm not entirely sure. Any thoughts anyone?
hey guys - so, ran into a problem with my R3 today. My card 1 (CFExpress) was full. So, I deleted a bunch of images, but it still kept saying full and refused to write to the card. I took the card out, turned it off and back on and still the same issue. I presume this is because the images weren't actually removed from the card, but simply the indexing in the file system was removed (leaving the deleted images still on the card, just no longer accessible by the camera's menu systems etc). Am I correct in my assumptions?
I have ran into this issue with my older 60D and 7D II cameras, and deleting files worked with no 'card full" error continuing. So, I am curious as to what the difference is with the R3 and why deleting the files didn't work (vs the older cameras)
Oh noo
I'm not sure but I'd say just carry a back up card
It'll be worth it in the end
oh I formatted the card in the field and all was well
I'd already copied the previous files to my computer so no harm in formatting
here it's heading towards Summer and very hot
we're due to have a 36 degrees C day tomorrow
Yikes
that's 96.8F
the hottest we've had here was a 47 degree day a few years back
that's nearly 117F
I'm the opposite in the field. I'm too obsessed with the birds that I barely pull out the camera
I suspect we'll get a 47c day this Summer
I prefer the cold, I can layer up...you can't take layers off in this horrible heat
There's not even birds in the winter to take photos, so I might as well only fill the feeders and set up a warm spot to take photos
0° F?
That cold enough for you?
Where the wind burn makes me feel sick
We have -30 like a year ago
only in the early morning of course, it warms up during the day
So I'm gonna try to stock up on bird food, and fill everything up, and make everything nice for the birds- heated bath
Yeah and the snow isn't even good until January
I'll go out on one of those randomly 45 days
I’ve never experienced this on any system. Once I’ve deleted stuff on a full card it was removed and I had access to the card for shooting again. I’ve also not used the mirrorless Canon line very much but I’m not sure why this would be intended. For me that card would be replaced completely because it did something abnormal and is not trustworthy. At least it would have been for sure if I was shooting for a living again now I might keep it as a backups backup.
Downy Woodpecker shot I got this morning, the fall colors in the backrounnd look great!
Woah the focus and lighting is amazing
Thanks!
hopefully not a card issue. Angelbird cards are touted as very reliable...and expensive
Has any used primes for birds? Does it feel too limiting?
I pretty much exclusively use primes though I did just get a 180-600. Some environments are limiting but most of the time you just adapt by moving. So no not for me
how often do you find yourself too close to birds
Not too often because I’m always thinking about MFD. It does happen though because things always move or fly in of course.
Yeah but even the best things sometimes just fuck up
500f4 prime here...love it
true, true
tfw you plan to go out in the morning to photograph Ospreys but sleep through your alarm
ouch
:/
a great day with the camera...both zoomed in on the LCD screen but not by a lot
both shot at ISO500 (dusk)
got a pair of dollarbirds too (although a long way away)
and a BSK but very late after dusk and soft
got a potentially very nice pale headed rosella image yesterday arvo, full frame, no zoom
back lit though .... the story of my nemesis... lol
nice pics
The one on the left is
Superb
I see what you did there
thanks
just backing up my imported RAW files from my laptop, will import yesterday and today's images once done and start culling
white wings?
you mean white wing trillers?
I'm hopeful that another BOP turns up like the Kestrel, BSK or Peregrine
I've yet to see a peregrine
or australian hobby or letterwing kite
oh! are these fairywrens?
I saw a Hobby recently
Yep, White winged Fairywren
looks very similar to a brown falcon?
They do a little
but their facial marking is more pronounced
almost Peregrine style
but brown
just trying to find some comparison images now
found this pdf but it doesn't really help me - https://birdswa.com.au/CEC/Handouts/Australian Raptor Identification.pdf
uggh backing up takes forever...
70GB driving me crazy
and I have 2 backup drives so...
mm windows 11 is fucking up...trying to open up a folder with 2 months worth of raw files and it's just giving me the sand glass icon...after 7 minutes....
thank fuck for DOS...1 second fix del *.CR3
bang done
I use faststone image viewer to go through pictures folders and it's way more ergonomic and fast, I'd recommend using it if you haven't tried
(it's free)
I use faststone image viewer (have 2 licences too), it's amazing. I have already imported to my drive, culled, then imported into lightroom...was copying the imported files from the past 2 months to my backup hdd and once done, wanted to delete all of the images off my laptop's hdd...going into the folder was just giving me the hanging sand glass icon of death...
so I couldn't ^a to select all and thus delete via windows explorer
I usually use faststone to cull/sort my images after importing from my CFexpress card to my laptop's hdd...after culling, I then import into Lightroom
I should back up to my portable drives more often...I'm lazy. I typically keep my images on card and on laptop hdd...once I'm backed up, I delete all images off the laptop drive and card
but I had to do a forced format yesterday on my CFExpress card as it was mucking up
I don't mind digging into the file system via DOS...been using GNU/Linux since '97, BSDs and UNIX o/s since then too
Yeah faststone is great
brown falcon? @mint warren
Think so
thanks
a real pity I couldn't get closer to the dollarbirds today :/
having to crop to 100% but they look amazing
lots of superb fairywren keepers even at ISO5000. Yay! I've captured the males before, but never with the R3, only with my older 60D and 7DII.
got some great poses too
what looks like a golden headed cisticole too
which was dancing around with the male superb fairywrens, weird
got to the end of my editing when I realised that the masking had fucked up around some points of the barbed wire, and the birds underside and the tail...I don't know how to fix the masking in Photoshop, it's horrible to use vs masking in Lightroom which is far more intuitive...
anyway, bed for me, it's 11pm and I have to be up at 5.30am for work and it's still boiling hot here
there's tons of tutorials on youtube
I find masking in Photoshop miles better than lr
should be easy in that pic with such a smooth background too
–
Today we show you how to make fast and accurate cutouts of people with Select and Mask in Photoshop. Learn to use the Quick Selection Tool to make the initial selection, clean up the soft edges of hair and clothing with the Refine Edge Tool, and then change the background color, adding a spotlight effect to draw more attention to the subject!
...
there's tons of different methods but the select and mask tool is quick and easy and works well on complicated edges like hair
I'll have a look, but I don't "get it" (I have tried before)
it's just 1 aspect of Photoshop that mentally eludes me
photoshop literally has a "select subject" button that works nearly flawlessly most of the time as long as there's some seperation
trying to get closer and around the Purple back would of mean going into Tiger Snake territory so bleh
I used it...it doesn't work flawlessly
lovely shots mate! Always stay safe. No photo is worth a deadly snake bite
On the shot above? That’s really surprising
it worked OK with the above image yes. But I'd say 8 out of 10 shots that I work on, I have to spend a fair amount of time manually correcting the masking.
the select and mask tool is good for correcting the auto selection
seems like its all but announced from canon now
ill be interested myself too
I don't know that tool, but will have to learn
pair of dollarbirds (100% crop - wasn't able to get physically closer sadly)
Another shot of the White Winged fairywren
well, once again Canon Australia ass fucks Australian customers. It's a hard pass from me. USD $1899 (translates to ~AUD $2950 with the current exchange rate) and they set the Australian price for the RF200-800 to fucking AUD $3499...$600 more (16% price hike). No thank you.
I seriously regret sticking with Canon every day.l
example of lightroom masking problems using subject AI etc...
trying to automask below the tail, between the legs and under the wings using either colour or luminance additions to the existing mask just fucking masks the bird
no choice but to manually mask
annoying as fuck
this is a common problem for me
so the AI masking, imho, is very hit and miss
and this image has a pretty clean background that's uniform too...lightroom just doesn't fucking understand shit reliably
20 minutes later, masking fixed...most of the barbed wire was fucked
I think it's a golden headed cisticole
ended up not using ai mask selection in photoshop, just duplicated the base layer, adjusted hue/sat and then manually masked out the bird (which was oversaturated). I wanted to saturate the background only, not hte bird
5 more minutes wasted cos masking from Adobe sucks
at least, from my perspective
ymmv
finished image
Cool!
looks like it's probably a breeding female and a golden headed cisticole as I was pretty sure species wise
its as i expected it seems
now hopefully the optics are also as i expect (either the same or better than 200-600)
We discussed it all day
It's just slightly less sharp than 100-500
Generally very good the whole range of zooms
according to mtf charts which imo mean next to nothing the 100-500 holds up better, whether significant i doubt but still
Sharper than the f11 primes, sample images look excellent
200-600 is pretty sharp anyway
if i were just buying a bird lens id prob have went this way if it was available
I'm gonna sell 150-600 for this I reckon
might be something i buy later on lol, still recovering from x100v, id love to have a bit more range sometimes
The range is perfect for me and I don't need fast apertures
And lighter than the 400 prime for travel
IS and IBIS will get you through almost all day anyway
F9 isn't that bad
Modern ff handles 6400 iso like nothing
Only 1 stop behind f6.3
yeah, keep in mind sometimes im using f/10 with the tc on my lens and it works fine
Yeah exactly
1120mm with a tc sounds fun
Chuck it on a crop sensor and put 2x for nearly 2600mm
be careful with RF lenses and tc compatibility, lot of lenses are not compatible.
same list for the 1.4x
200-800 has been tested with one already
This lil guy is very blue. Wish we got colourful birds around here
for future reference this is usually the case for tcs to be on the "prosumer" or above category (actually surprised you can on the 100-400), 200-800 being brand new and mentioned to have compatibility it should work fine, prob just didnt update the list
one they missed was rf 70-200 but i think physically it just wouldnt work on that one, maybe a mk ii would be fine
Carolina Wren
Any ideas on what this is. Took it in Dubbo NSW.
hard to say
I assume toby was supposed to post an image...?
nuh uh you have to guess
Yeah you do 🤣
thats just a noisy miner
Noisy miner - very common
right up there with pigeons and bin chickens
Some pidgeons are rarer than others
Where is the world fucking going
Yeah
birds could all be yelling slurs but we dont speak bird
the instagram snipping tool part in the bottom corner distracts me a little lol
should be fine to upload the photo itself here anyway, many people upload large sized photos fine
cool pic tho I don't have those birds here
Im a hobbyist, just went on a bird spotting trip and got teamed up with 3 biologists.
Their spotting and identification skills are on another level
Hopefully i will be able to get to that level after a few years
They're normally far better than any photographer could dream to be
Yea
Have to remember they do it 8 hrs a day multiple days a week with formal training lol
Yea
And we do it like barely at all in comparison
And today they are doing it on their free time too
Bird nerds
My mediocre shots from today
While I was out I met another photographer. Had an A1 and 600/4. That man takes some bloody nice shots...
Salimy?
got some more pacific heron and sacred kingfisher shots today.
but still have a backlog of images to work on before getting to today's images
bit of a snapshot of a bird in the snow
i see these sparrows all over the place in the trees
Gardens by the Bay at Singapore Marina South is known for its botanical and floral display but unknown to most is that it also has 120 species of birds recorded there.
This is a short overview of the different varieties that can be found at the different sectors within the vast garden grounds.
This is an updated (Apr 21) version to correct some ...
holy shit it looks so good
took 1000 photos of hand feeding birds with a manual focus lens
3% of them are actually in focus as expected
this ones funny
The miners are invading the tree
a few from the past week
laowa 33mm f0.95 for the wide shots (first 3) and Sony 70-350 for the telephoto.
oh sweet, I love the shallow depth
@fleet mica ever gone international for bird photography?
Nope, never been out of Australia
you're brisbane right?
Yeah
huh
Why are flights from brisbane to singapore more expensive than perth to singapore
Oh it's actually further distance
my geography sucks more than I thought
No idea
Gardens by the Bay at Singapore Marina South is known for its botanical and floral display but unknown to most is that it also has 120 species of birds recorded there.
This is a short overview of the different varieties that can be found at the different sectors within the vast garden grounds.
This is an updated (Apr 21) version to correct some ...
consider trying out singapore
I've been once before it's so goddamn good holy shit
i love these
Okay I know I've said it before
But does anyone here have a job doing bird photography?
I would love to but I'm not sure if it's a real career or if I can make a good living out of it
ive made 90 cents from it so far
I've earned several updoots in #🌳・nature
Updoots?
Yeah I was talking with a school counselor and we couldn't find a lot. I don't want to do portrait photography because I might not do photography at all if its not what I want
top strat is get a well paying job with plenty of vacation time in a region thats good for birding
there's a stereotype that rich photographers are dentists for a reason lol
I got money but no free time
sleeping on the street cradling my teleprime
You’d have to be very lucky to find a way to get stable income from bird photos.
new 300f2.8 gm with a 2x tc is very small
it's also $$$
simply afford it smh
side hustle as a dentist
I think the Nikon 6.3 pf is smaller
yea it big
Nikon is lighter too
just get both
thats only E mount on a MC-11
in that case it really is a good thing Sony released those primes
If Sigma/Tamron could undercut the traditional big teles with reasonably priced alts that would be nice
been waiting years already
get the ttartisan 500 6.3

portraiture (studio) or school portraits with mobile lighting setup, or weddings are your best bet to make money from photography. Wildlife photography isn't a good way to get an income I'm afraid. I've made the cost of a book from it (got a copy of a book as reward for letting the author use One of my images).
manual focus, useless in the field imho
Are you sure? :(
yes
the only real way to make money off wildlife is to be an influencer or a videographer for documentaries
Okay. I'm trying to figure it out because I'm really not interested in anything else
i know some people who work in zoology and catalogue/research wild animals
that includes photoing them, most often with a phone but some go for a proper camera
if that interests you, you could look into gov/research/advisory zoology jobs and universities
So what's like wildlife research?
Is there something like that so I can go out into nature and research?
Yeah
Like going out and actually checking on animals
Surveying populations etc
Ofc there's theory too
Do some research on it if you're interested
Yeah I probably will
Found Spruce Grouse!
holy moly what lens is that?!
laowa 33mm f0.95 for the wide shots (first 3) and Sony 70-350 for the telephoto.
Here's a shot I got of an Eastern Bluebird a few days ago, I wish he would've come a bit closer...
Same. I hear about them a lot but I've only seen a couple.
This is the only photo I have
I hope I get more! I need to go outside but it's already 30-40°F
Any editing critiques for this Cooper's Hawk shot?
Thanks! I was riding by on my bike on the way to a park, and he was in the parking lot... I wondered if it was hurt, but eventually it flew away like normal... 🤷♂️
Real
I’m just getting into all this but this is what I was able to shoot today. First day with the 200-600
thanks! i have a 70-200 GM II with a 2x TC i use for deer and larger animals, but this 600 makes quick work of birds and im happy to be using it
My workflow is pretty standard atm:
- Cull on Adobe Bridge
- Adjust tones, sharpness, straighten, and AI denoise in Lr
Anything I should be looking into that could help specifically with this type of photography?
a bit of noise in the shadows and could do with sharpening, but colours look great. Perhaps a slightly too tight crop too, a bit more room for the bird to breathe, but that's a really minor critique. I'd be stoked with a shot like this mate
off to a good start!
I prefer to sharpen in Photoshop (high pass filter) than Lightroom. DXO Pure Raw is superior to Lightroom denoise AI too, but I would turn sharpening off (and no sharpening in Lightroom). I typically use the following workflow:
- denoise with DXO Pure RAW 2
- adjust exposure to get the base exposure looking right, then adjust Whites and Blacks to improve DR. I then adjust Clarity and vibrance (small amounts, I keep it simple as they can do weird things to images).
- mask as needed and adjust shadows and highlights on bird and/or sky/background as appropriate.
- I correct the WB manually by looking for a relatively neutral area where the RGB values are close to each other.
In photoshop, I'll use the AI select on a new layer to adjust curves for both the subject and background. I'll do the same for hue/sat. I then do high pass filter sharpening (0.2px, very subtle), depending upon the image, once or twice. It's very minimal. Then I'll resize to 2400px longest side, save as JPG using bicubic sharper or bilinear, depends upon which looks better and save to maximum quality.
Hope this helps. This is just 1 way to do it, and by no means the best or only way.
I dig the framing but it’s too centered imo
Well if u have a frame this tight u kinda have to have it centered imo
Not happy with Lightroom classics ai masking it’s shit. Will have to re-process this image and spend a considerable amount of time fixing shit
BSK, full frame
got these lucky shots while burst shooting out in Shenandoah National Park. noticed afterward during editing that the one was a hawk. (sadly could not get any closer, only have a 70-300mm kit lens)
Yeah, changing the angles will hide parts of the birb. Got some shots where it looks at the right and got the beak hidden(or the birb ass on some shots
).
I like it
I don't regret upgrading to a newer camera, animal AF nails focus on birds almost every time. Now I just need to find birds that are actually in good light 😂
u can fix that in post
Fucked up this morning and left my AF on Train but still got a couple soft shots of the birb
these new cameras are great though all you gotta do is worry about the composition and the camera takes care of all the focusing
some smart asses, on another server that shall go unnamed, will go "skill issue". I'm with you - I want to make my life easier and get a better hit rate and get shots that I'd never have gotten with my 7DII. These newer MLCs let me do all of that, plus EVF and seeing the image live in the viewfinder is also a game changer as far as I am concerned
Yeah it's about the fun. Make do with whatever you have and don't forget to have fun
Having the equipment doesn't take away from actually knowing how to work the camera, and making it do everything to get a nice out come
And there's the creative piece too
exactly
but some others, would say differently. "skillz" blah blah blah. it's why I'm rarely on that server now, too many assholes
Yeah I love this server. Glad I didn't have to go through any other crappy place
That server is cancer
I feel that way too
Even though I disagree with u on some stuff
They are just on a whole nother level
And if u have noticed
They do not post
Ever.
oh they do, at least in the canon channel
Well i havent seen it
Once you have a grasp on the skills you shouldn’t have any qualms about utilizing all the tools a modern camera gives you to make your life easier.
yes, true, although some cameras are more complex than others and take some time to get used to and be able to fully utilise their capabilities
you also have to take into account older people such as myself learn slower and don't always pick up stuff straight away
it's just part of getting older and happens to everyone
Yeah
anyway, I must run, going out with the camera today, hoping to get some Osprey shots. Got some red browed finch, sacred kingfisher, collared kingfisher, brown honeyeater and BSK shots yesterday, was a good One
Well I'm young and I love learning a ton about camera stuff
Ooo looking forward to the kingfisher photos
will take me a couple of days to get around to processing them etc. The BSK shots look very nice in camera. Anyway, I must run, have to get read and get out of here in just over 25 minutes
have a good day
was a bunch of photographers standing around this tree with a hawk on a low branch and it sat there for an hour before taking off and I was the only one to get a pic
Black shouldered kites are so damn cool
the way the color of their eyes contrasts with the white and black
Also how they can perfect hover like Kestrels
patience often rewards. It's a big thing in nature photography imho
a lot of the time, the eyes have been lightened and saturated to show this off...
got Ospreys in flight today. Pretty sure I have some keepers
Look at how calm and relaxed this bird is
Also did some more RBE stuff
@frozen belfry here you go! From Sunday. A bit of Photoshop trickery here as my framing was bad, so I extended the canvas to the Left, and to the top, used the AI generative fill to fill in the sky, then cropped back into the original image ratio of 6000*4000. Came out OK.
When doing generative fill or content aware fill it's good to make the fill larger than you need then feather the edge in a layer mask that way there's no hard edge to give it away. If you look close you can see vertical and horizontal lines where the fill was done in that pic.
I did make the edge larger, but didn’t think to feather.
That lil guy in the second pic looks so angry with those eyebrow feathers
Awesome!
They really have attitude
Gonna reprocess it to fix the issues that tort pointed out
It’s still a beautiful shot
True
Look!
I got 4 lifers yesterday!
Not the best photos. Bad lighting but still cool
Ring-necked duck, redhead, common merganser and common goldeneye!
I need good photos of them now
Wish me luck for tomorrow
And then on Thursday I'm going to the other place
tort, how do I set the feathering when using generative fill? Also, how can I add a small amount of noise to the fill area to make it look more natural and less artificial?
OK, I used the magnetic lasso to select the entire extended canvas area (rather than do the top and Left sections indvidually), making sure to overlap (had to go close to the birds wings though). I then selected the same area gain and added noise (filter ==> add noise), around 0.5% which seems naturally and doesn't look too different from the rest of the "normal" canvas. I had to play around with the noise amount until I got an acceptable value
oops, forgot to feather...not sure how to do that
Shift f6
After selecting
ahh! I ended up just going to select ==> modify ==> feather. Tried various feather settings and settled on 10px. The larger the px setting for this, the worse the results. Does shift f6 do the same as what I did?
gotta figure out how to duplicate the magnetic lasso selection to add noise to it
I think it's just hold down alt and move the selection to the new layer, right?
Yes, the same
many thanks mate.
this is the new edit, does it look better?
For empty skies content aware fill is better than generative
oh, really? thanks again, learning much
Content aware reproduces patterns from elsewhere
So it reproduces noise patterns etc
ahhh, that's nice to know.
just sorting through my bsk images from Saturday and my fairy wren shots from yesterday
really happy with several images
I picked up The Fairy-Wrens by Richard Schodde this arvo off ebay for the bargain price of AUD $40, stoked
mmm just picked up penny olsen's glimpses of paradise (paradise parakeet) for $35! BARGAIN!!!
I want her wedge tailed eagles book but it's expensive and out of my price range atm
On the way to Flinders Peak Conservation Park. Had got out of the car to spot some Dollarbirds in the distance. Saw movement, grabbed camera, knelt and waited a few moments. These 2 relaxed and came out to give me a song and dance routine. Beautiful. Lovely to see the immature male going through his first moult.
the second bird is so scrunkly I love him
not dollarbirds. I saw them, but they flew off...then I spotted movement, which was the female above. These are red backed fairy wrens. Female and male going through his moult to becoming an adult male.
he is, isn't he!
Hi there! I am new in this discord channel, and I just now discovered the forums. I thought you might appreciate this little duck! Not sure if it is actually any good but I love her expression.
welcome onboard. Nice duck!
Here is my contribution to the ducks, and welcome to the server!
Ooooo duck
I have some duck shots from Tuesday, but haven't processed them yet . Too hot here today. Going to retreat downstairs where it's cooler
it was 28.2 in my room at 11pm last night...damn heat death trap at night 😦
Red-Winged Blackbird in sunlight
Thank you!
Thanks!
We have a location here where the ducks like to hang out in a group of 20 or so
So cool that it Looks fake
@fleet mica man those guys can just gang up on you for real
I find those male duck groups to have a gang vibe for sure!
I think they know something I don't know
I got some hooded merganser photos!
I'll send them in a couple moments. I'm going through them right now
???
In the other server
I finally got a photo of the squirrel
but the sun was in a bad spot so thats the best i could do
cool white squirrel
oh. I didn't realise you were on that shitty server too. no matter, told them where to go and have left it. Been thinking of leaving that server for a good month now. Nothing but assholes.
this server is way better. No comparison
I joined a birding discord but most people in there don't even take pics of birds they just look at them with their eyes 🤯
that one
Birding International is okay at best
They’re oddly excited for all the human names for birds to get removed
They’re a helpful bunch
yeah I don't look at anything else
But I get the feeling I’ll piss someone off if I mention a Cooper’s hawk come next year
I've never found a bird google didn't know
Yeah
And don’t use whatever newspeak name the AOS is pushing
Well I'll flip em off and leave if they yell at me
Yeah
I liked the heated debate on whether or not a woodpecker was extinct or not
I only use it for help with ID. This server is for my camera stuff
I like the place but fuck, if my work is top end on a server then the server is lacking skill
Which woodpecker?
uhhhhh
And having seen BI standard work, anyone in here could do just fine
The Ivory?
yeah that one
dam
the bird book was written by the deep state to decieve you
the government has millions of living woodpeckers in a warehouse somewhere in the desert
yup
you'll do a Dave then lol
Oh I thought you were making a duck joke.
Sure
sleepy ducks
Quack
many ducc
Hooded Merganser!
They are so pretty, aren't they?
Harley Quinn ducks are crazier
Harlequin
She
Disappointly I didnt get good photos of the bufflehead I saw a while back. Maybe in the future
I love them
And I thought we in Aus had the craziest looking duck
The gang 😉
Unfortunately he was so quick away, I couldn't do a proper composition and he is cut off at the bottom
lovely shots Libby!
Thank you very much! I'm extremely happy with how they turned out
I was going to go watch the meteor shower, but the sun starts to like rise in an hour. And they never woke me up
not photography, but I found this hilarious - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jQUAO7804y4

Thanks you, Dear ! Good luck together !
looks like quaills aren't the smartest birds in the forest LOL
Oh I saw that! I think it's just a domestic quail
When I go spotlighting for foxes with m8s, often we flush out the stubble quails in the grass.
they're cool lookin birds
This bird reminds me of this shot i did.. its crow.. right?
Yes, a crow! Love your shot ❤️
Ty love your shot too ^_^
Thanks!
Just two crows. Totally the same. /J
female Red backed Fairywren and Eastern Osprey
Is the eastern Osprey a separate subspecies?
no, it's just the proper name I believe
Good to know
Here they’re just ospreys, but America thinks itself the center of the world
most people call them osprey here too
The eastern osprey (Pandion haliaetus cristatus) is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. They live in Oceania at coastal regions of the Australian continent, the Indonesian islands, New Guinea, and the Philippines. It is usually sedentary and pairs breed at the same nest site, building up a substantial structure on dead trees or limbs.
The subsp...
They’re pretty cosmopolitan, seems like
yeah
The Biodiversity Heritage Library works collaboratively to make biodiversity literature openly available to the world as part of a global biodiversity community.
I don't understand why our national library isn't keeping these gorgeous books alive with reprints
Murdoch doesn’t earn commission, so nothing gets printed?
I guess
I'd love a 7 volume set of Gould's work in my library, as well as Matthew's 12 volume set
idk if it was invading their territory or what but these cormorants were very angry about the heron being there
I saw a kingfisher today ❤️ couldn't photograph it, but still very happy about it
kingfishers look so cool
What bird is that?
i think its a house finch
here you go, daily Kingfisher fix for you 😉
I believe the One on the Left is a Rufous Whistler (female). Friarbird on the Right.
Intermediate Egret. A bit of masking here, although I did deliberately underexpose the image to protect the highlights of the bird. When the masking works in Lightroom Classic, it's amazing. The key word is "when".
actually, that looks a bit cool, warmed it up a bit and I think it looks better now.
Cool photos !
Ooooo
a new lifer for me - Olive-backed Oriole. not the best pose sadly and a busy/distracting backgrouind, but, it is what it is
I’m always striving to get better shots, so I’m quite a hard judge
Fair
