And I wasted a lot of my migration trips really interested in just identifying the birds
Didn't even take the camera out
But I got a couple lifers!!
depends what you are shooting. For perched birds, I go with 1/1000 @ f7.1 and change my ISO to suit my light. For birds in flight, slower birds like big raptors, I go for 1/2000 @ f7.1 in good light and may drop it to f5.6 in crappy light. For faster birds in flight, 1/4000-1/8000
i usually shoot wide open since my lens is sharp enough and i prefer the look, but SS and ISO vary for me
Oh damn I use like 640 shutter or 800
I just tried aperture a bit smaller than wide open and it was way better
I nearly always stop down with the 500f4, it is slightly sharper imho. The big L primes are very close on wide open to a stop down in sharpness though and you don't tend to notice it too much as a rule.
you're using the Sigma 150-600, right?
yeah, on the primes its just preference
the sigma is not optically in the same class as a big L prime imho. Not trying to be mean. The big L primes are much much sharper
sigma 150-600 is sharper a stop down
but its already a touch dark so often you shoot wide open so ISO can stay lower
I don't get enough light with a fast shutter
it depends
Was using 800iso
which cam do you use again?
yeah better to keep it relatively wide so you can reduce iso then
bump the ISO. Expose to the Right as far as possible without blowing highlights. If you don't starve the sensor of light, high ISOs are very good with modern cameras imho
Oh okay
Well personally I liked it a bit under what the camera thought was fully exposed
Why is it that I should make it lighter?
And how do I know if it's blown out
rebel t5 does have some heavy noise issues
700D is the t5i I believe. Haven't used it so can't really comment on its high ISO performance, but if it's like my 60D, then it's probably 2 stops worse off ISO wise than the modern MLCs from Canon
reminds me of my favorite challenge, chickadees
easy to approach but black and white bird
t5 is the 1200d, worse than the 700d
Yeah I try to use as little iso and then I use noise reduction in editing
yeah, I've seen photos of chickadees on an Astronomy forum that's US based and has some keen birders
oh...dang!
Okay I gtg. Thanks for the info
Get a R10 Libbi! Will easily better your current camera and won't break the bank too much
plus, animal eye detect AF and 24mp
Ping me later if you have anything to say I really don't mind!
ive only shot a grey fantail once with this old one
I'll think about it. I just bought a lens so idk if I can't convince them to buy more stuff lol
Bye!
that's a decent shot mate
thanks! was one of the first with the 400 lol
this is the other grey fantail shot that I managed
very late on 1 evening, very low light. Came out pretty dang good considering. my first time seeing 1 and managed a half decent shot too. Was pretty stoked
shot shots of captive birds from the Maleny bird sanctuary that we went to on Sunday just gone. Mitchel Cockatoo, Red tailed Black Cockatoo, male Eclectus and Blue & Gold Macaw.
colour space on the major mitchell looks weird, despite being converted to sRGB. NO idea why it looks weird
the R3 has superb DR and high iSO performance. Easily usable up to 10000 ISO
yeah, the r3 is one of the cameras i was looking at for my next upgrade
pretty clean up to 6400 without using noise software imho. Grain is there but very well kept in check
a little better in iso performance than the 1dxii i use
yeah, i decided against it for my other uses
although I really should have switched to an A1 and 200-600
I know
could get an extra 800mm prime and make the resolution basically irrelevant for the same price as 1 teleprime there haha
I'm using gigapixel now, very happy with the results
for now, im waiting on r5ii and r1 to release and see what their specs are like
along with DXO Pure RAW2, the best $$$ I've spent in photography imho
i use gigapixel occasionally too, pureraw much more often
I've been upsiziung my R3 images to the R5 sensor size and printing to A2 at officeworks
only a 1.5x increase each side or so so topaz would handle that well i assume
my local officeworks is now using Canon 4000s printers and I think fujifilm fineprint 200gms matte paper. Makes for very good results. Their website says maximum file size of 150mb, but it's impossible to get a 16 bit tiff set to A2 print size @ ~350dpi under that 150mb limit. My local officeworks has happily printed out files at 450mb for me
i have no problems printing ~25mp to A2 though personally
technically speaking, 24mp shuold only go up to A3 print size unless you sacrifice dpi and resolution...
my best mate in Sydney is wanting to print/hang some of my images on his walls in his home
anyway, I'm gonna head on downstairs and watch a single episode of Angel before getting some shut eye. Has been a long day for me (worked all day)
night mate
you can get acceptable print quality for viewing distances by sacrificing dpi, though not perfect up close ofc - for my walls it works fine
have fun, night mate
I just use my r6s 20mp and sharpen a bit using topaz photo ai(if needed), 100-500 is very sharp for a zoom
Only issue is cropping in a bit
for me id want to upgrade to an r5 mk ii someday for those times where id need to crop in more and keep the resolution since i also print stuff myself (not too picky though)
When I’m just close to the subject it does great
What rotten luck
I did see a tree with a couple bald eagles snacking on something one of those days. Didn’t so like an idiot though.
Raptor is pretty much “the bird dude” in this server in some sense
Also @scarlet tulip probably
Both people shoot bride
Bird
Birds
There’s a shop at Ocean Beach will sell you a seagull plush with a fry in his mouth
that's the problem with 24mp, especially for birds. Sure, you can crop, but it iwll be limited in terms of resolution. 45mp is the sweet spot, especially for birding and is a better choice than a 24/20 mp camera setup. Even with a longer focal length and very sharp lens.
ah hello, standing right here.
yeah if I want super sharp I need the bird big in the frame but then it's a lot harder to keep them in frame when theyre flying
yeah, I hear you. Especially with larger raptors that are relatively close. I have a colony of ~50 Black Kites locally (ten minute drive) and they get close. Shooting at 700mm makes it a challenge and I haven't quite mastered it yet imho.
sadly back lit. Fucks with the DR and colours and AF accuracy too.
still a sick shot
such a cutie! pity I couldn't get closer.
guy's got a sword for a bill
can't remember if I've posted this in here or not - Australasian Grebe
nah, all over the world, including Africa and Europe
ah that was just one species i was looking at
haven't seen one that is in the US at all though
maned duck. Did some clone work to remove some of a 2nd bird in the background and make the image cleaner
they're elusive birds, hard to spot, hard to get close to. Finding a location is a great idea, and then using a hide and waiting them out.
US gets kingfishers too, but only the belted variety
lack the colours of other kingfishers sadly 😦
ooh theyre cool
yeah, they're less flambouyant
i like the mohawk tho
LOL, there's a sensible sort?
lmao
next you'll be telling me Rainbow Lorikeets are well behaved
seems like there aren't many near me
compared to a cassowary, sure
lol
good point. I haven't seen a wild cassowary (yet). Have seen several captive birds, and up reasonably close
seeing one wild would be fun, from a distance
there's a beach up north of cairns where they run wild and come right up to people. Scary AF
FYI for non Australians - a Cassowary is a large bird, and can easily disembowel you with its talons
the ones with the massive heads and beaks?
emu?
just scary af
I got a lotta sandhill cranes near me that are pretty chill
sitting at a bench and a couple 4ft tall birdos walk up to you and ask for snacks
that one's got a cute face
kite?
yeah, Black Shouldered Kite
Brown Falcon, sadly, backlit eary AM. Had to work hard to get colours
AM seems best for raptors
i've never had much luck once the sun is high, except with ospreys
I've had luck in the arvo, just gotta be in the right place at the right time, which as we both know ,is the hard bit
Fluffy little falcon
I've seen this bird on the same perch AM and PM. Seems Mr or Mrs reliable
I have a group of little house sparrows that always wake up and start hitting the feeders almost exactly 7:15am every day
depends on the season i guess, but they're very punctual
looks like these are actually pretty common around me this time of year
if only I had a lens
going to check out a used 200-500 soon to see if i like it and if it's a good one since they have QC issues
if that one isn't good it will be a while
what country?
us
for birds tho?
oh yeah
i have FF
could be nice, a little pricey
probably use it forever tho
had my eye on the Z 400 F/4.5 as well
if i can get it
just assuming i cant for a while
also its a little slow for me, would like to use what I get for sports too
true
that's why i like the 300PF
you put a TC on and you have a bird lens
take it off and it's nice for sports
yeah I just wish it was a little cheaper for a 300, but its definitely a contender
the older 300/4 is also an option
i only sold mine because i bought a 300PF
not quite as good on a TC but it works
i'll see if they have one when I check out the 200-500
otherwise I'm saving for either 300PF or Z 400 probably
good call
this imho ^^^
much bigger money on the f4 version, but a better lens too
more expensive, but the ability to nuke backgrounds is nice
I really like Nikon's lens offerings, much better than Sony or Canon imho
they've got great sets of standard zooms
Canon EF has that 400/5.6 which seems nice
and you can get similar performance for similar price with a 300PF and a TC
yeah, but 420mm is still too short for birds imho
it is, on a full-frame anyway
how do they compare to the z6II/z7ii and z8?
Z8 is a complete different ballgame
but FF and very expensive
Z6ii is capable, and not expensive
Zf, when it comes, will use a Z6 sensor with the Z9 tracking-AF
that sounds promising
it's going to be what i end up going with for upgrades i think
throwing $4k at a Z8 is a bit much
invest in glass imho
`that's a nice lens.
I really should sell my 300f4 - it has never focused properly on any body and getting it repaired by Canon will cost me more than the lens is damn well worth
lens problem?
always misfocuses
I thought it was just backfocus/front focus but never had a body with AF microadjustment until I picked up the 7D II. Then I was too lazy to test it
then I got the R3 and R10...
it's just SOFT and unusable for anything
I don't think it's decentering
lens hasn't been dropped or treated rough and it was like this from day 1 after purchase
i have to imagine it's some electronic issue
should have returned it, but...
yes, I don't think it's optical, unless a lens element has lifted away from the group
but I'm leaning towards AF motor problem
which is a shame, since they're nice lenses
and for larger raptor BIFs, 560mm is perfectly fine when they're close
there are times when i want to go all-in on a 300/2.8 and just teleconvert to 600/5.6
but that's a lot of cash and it's possible to get longer for the same price
if I can sell my 500f4 and get AUD 4k for it (it's in mint condition and works perfectly, 2nd owner), and 5k from tax return, I'll upgrade to the 500f4 mark 2
might as well, and you're used to the lens
yupo
is the mk2 that much of an improvement?
AFAIK, faster AF acquisition, slightly better with AF tracking (stickier/more accurate) and IS is much, much much better
mark 2 has 2x AF motors and AF chip, which apparently helps when using with TCs (mark 3 versions)
extra speed from the motors too i bet
AFAIK yeah
would be keen to try the RF100-500 but it's a big turn off that you cannot use the TC for the entire range
plus, need to fork out near 1k for a RF TC
I really don't want to get RF lenses anyway - can't use them on my older DSLR bodies
I can work with f6.3
it's 7.1, isn't it?
yes true, but with the high ISO performance of the R3, I can get away with it
i guess i question the wisdom of a $3000 lens that's this slow wide open
like, sure, it works
but older lenses have been faster and performed quite well
yup
Might be a method thing as well
I shoot wide open whenever I can, but I also only ever buy lenses that can support this kind of work
If you want a single lens to do everything and you stop down anyway, the 100-500 makes a lot more sense
I nearly always stop down a stop or close to. Even the big primes aren't their sharpest wide open (although they are typically very close imho).
and I'm using a TC, which softens the image somewhat. Big benefit of stopping down a stop when using a TC imho
yup
And that’s only ever used in good light so it doesn’t matter so much
If I want speed I bring the 300/4 and keep it wide open
I had to use IS last weekend and drop the aperture to f5.6. Shot down to 1/400 @ f5.6 @ ISO 10000
it was that or not get the shot
I don't tend to use IS as the mark 1 500f4 makes a fucking massive whirring noise when you turn IS on and it drives me crazy and scares the fuck out of birds
a mate in Germany tells me that his mark 1 500f4 does the same thing on his R7
it just doesn't play nice with MLCs
remember, this lens was released in 1998, discontinued in 2008
if only I had the money 😦 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/166365826370?hash=item26bc2d0d42:g:a8QAAOSw~15lIF2U&
bbl, gonna do a couple of Diablo 3 GRs with my HC character

Time to send my only 3 somewhat decent bird photos
I got featured on kitchen nightmares since I overcooked these photos
nice birdies
that fisher's in a good mode
also nice to get detail out of the crow
300/4 wide open
super nice
no TC?
also I was thinking 300 F/4 + TC is kinda the same thing as getting the 400 4.5 but with some extra versatility
thats kinda crazy wide open, no ghosting at all
there is a very small amount
i don't worry about it, you have to crop way in to see it
this is the same lens, wide open, 1.7x TC
amazing
and again, but cropped
this is 7.1, i so get some ghosting when shooting white birds in bright sunlight through a TC
going down to 8 largely kills it
f8 here
no worries, I'll duck off to my local camera store and pick One up right now!
only 19 dollars? i'll take it
that thing looks like it would break under its own weight though
still not happy with my Eastern Osprey shots.
it's a 600f4 with a 2x TC built in I believe
they're hard to get anywhere but in the sky
only time i have any luck is either off a bridge, or in the forest facing the smallish lakes they'll go fishing in
and the RF 600f4 is optically inferior to the EF 600mm f4 II (the III is also an optical dud)
we have a place called "Osprey House" - has a mated pair (just raised 2 chicks).
and they'll return every year?
and of course they blend right in
permanent residents
there was a juvenile at Nudgee beach, but it appears to have drowned 😦
damn
very very sad news
sadly, yes
we'd had a period of heavy rain for over a week...a big bird like an Osprey is forced to hunt, but wet wings are well, a liability
especially when they're already soaked and heavy and they're diving into rough waters
not many people know that Ospreys can drown
that's a cracking shot btw
another in flight shot
uncropped
that's a perfect sky for them
got very lucky, uncropped this is right in the corner of the frame
all that for small fry
at least they won't drown as easily with the smaller fish
closest approach, but the R3 didn't grab focus well as the bird was heading directly at me
i've had the same happen
small food better than no food
feels like mirrorless bodies prefer grabbing focus as the bird runs side-side
yup, 100% agreed
when shooting stuff that flies right at my face, my hit rate drops by at least a factor of two
Sony is the best at this, with a near 100% success rate. Canon's is much lower, near ~10-15% imho
Sony autofocus remains king of the roost outside the Z8/9
i'd argue those are on par
but a good DSLR remains the best for some things
it could be an issue with the white head/face and lighter background skies being low contrast and hampering the AF. It may be a result of using a TC too, and more than likely cos I'm using a mark 1 prime
Sony is 100% the best AF on the market atm for birds. The NIkon is in 2nd place and the R3 in 3rd
osprey on a dark background or a cormorant against something lighter
the new Z firmware update is supposedly quite nice but yeah, Sony was first and has done well to develop the tech
if only they'd sell proper teleprimes
is z8 getting the bird thing confirmed?
their line up is missing a mid-range
it will
the Nikon has that funky AF though, AF is much nicer on the Canon gear, at least in terms of how to get the shot
they've released to the Z9 first but i can't imagine it won't trickle down
Nikon grabs better head on like the Sony, but that's no surprise
Nikon AF feels very much like it's designed to act like a DSLR
Canon will have to really work hard with their R1 cos atm, it's gonna still lag behind imho upon release
and then Sony will smash Canon with their A1 II
they first two modes you select are single-point and dynamic-area, just like on a DSLR
A1 II will be fun
yeah, I much prefer Canon's AF implementation methods
the small area square actually worked really well for me at my event last weekend, much more reliable than the dynamic area
I use my spot AF to get my AF zone in the rough ball park, then eye the bird in the frame and hit the 2nd back button AF for eye AF
yeah, i've found similar
dynamic-area is my choice for sports
I haven't use the R3's flexible zone AF yet
Canon recommends it over eye AF for BIFs too...so I'm probably not eking out the best from my R3 yet
with sports i can cover the whoe subject, and backgrounds are less problematic
Subject tracking mechanically feels amazing, but was dissapointing. Such a nice feel though
odd, though i guess a bird in flight just needs to be focused on as a unit
that is my take. The eyes are too small for eye AF to accurately grab at a distance. My R3 usually does the body frame focus indicator on the bird...
i've found the same with Nikons
if i'm shooting large mammals, fine
eye-AF works
for birds i'm aiming center-mass and firing bursts
there's only 1 real football in the world and it ain't AFL, Rugby League or Rugby Union
conus? continental US?
Birds
yeah
I like birds
clouds settling in where we are, was gonna go out and see if I can get some raptor shots
feathered or unfeathered?
good luck, hopefully it's not too grey
it's looking grey sadly. Could go hunting for the powerful owls
don't wanna drive too far, petrol prices are out of control here
we're hitting $10 AUD per gallon here
it's fucking out of control
2.33 for 91 fuel FFS
2c cheaper for E10
20c dearer for 95 premium and 30c for 98 premium
so 2.63 per litre for 98
with there being 4 litres per gallon, that's 2.63*4
our economy is fucked
they must tax the crap out of it
they do, 40c per L
rents are out of control, rental property shortage with lots of people living in tents in parks or in their cars now...house (purchase) prices are only for the wealthy now. A bunch of people will 100% lose their houses due to rising interest rates on mortgages in the next 24 months imhjo
food costs are now out of control too
I really wish I'd been born prior to 1967 as I'd have qualified for dual German/Australian citizenship and I can guarantee you that I'd long since left Australia for Germany
missed out by 2 years FFS
any way to get permanent residence?
yeah could get permanent residence, but at 54 with worsening health problems it wouldn't be a wise move imho
I'm not fluent in German (although I'd learn with enough practice)
i'd trust german healthcare over Aussie tbh
oh yeah, Australian is shit
and if you're in an urban area they all speak English
i speak some German and didn't need it in Berlin
used to be good, but 30 years of LNP shitfuckery has fucked it big time
LNP is the conservatives i'm guessing
yeah
xenophobics, homophobics, transphobics, only for the wealthy pricks party
10000% spot on
our quarterly electricitiy bill is now nearing $900
we use a lot more than most households, my brother in law and sister use electricity like it's running water lol
there's plenty of land for it
average is now around $550/600 per quarter for most households
Australians are very vocally anti-nuclear
for power?
yeah
yes, even for power
holy shit
bizarre
we're not the brightest nation lol
it's so useful, and you don't have the tectonic issues Japan does
we have so many opportunities for power from water and the sun, and we don't use it
we have 1 of the worst carbon pollution records of any nation btw
coal only, because i guess it's there
didn't it used to be asbestos mining
environmental reports say no, too much damage, but the government lets it go ahead and gives a 50 year no tax needs to be paid deal for the fucking mining company
yeah, mining companies making 2 billion profit+ per annum, no tax for 50 yearse
I mean, WTF?
tax the rich cunts
no, must have muh jobs
so glad the govt pays some company to kill its workers in the mines

bloody awesome channel
i get the same vibe as, like, ZeroPunctuation
yep
I didn't realise Canada had become such a shit hole (sorry to any Canadians in channel)
it's turning into a mini America sadly
enjoy
bbl
yes sadly
well, some luck today, got the powerful owls again. Better positions too, less obstructions, but a bit further away from me. Note: the presumed female was well hidden and had a lot of branches in the way. 1 juvenile still had baby feathers but was partly obstructed and had its head turned from me for most of the time. The 2nd bub was starting to come through with its adult plumage and I think I got some nice shots, albeit at high ISO
Bird Photography
Poweful Owl from today. Poses not as good as I thought and images not as sharp as I expected. Disappointing but still happy to see these beautiful birds.
Saw this sleeping owl yesterday, re checked the spot a few times but it slept the whole time.
Looks almost like an eagle-owl
only had my phone lol
that one's pretty big
i wanted to grab it
and keep it
friend
i just realized this thread has existed for like half a year
idk why
but i thought this forum was just made
So do you guys typically do the whole blind thing or just walk around/ sit and hang out
i chase down the bird
Both but mostly the latter
this is me
trynna figure out
what you mean by the latter
ik the definition
i just cant wrap my mind around it
I do both but mostly walk around/sit
😂
very similar, just missing the tufts
mostly walk around/sit/hang out, but I scout locations first so I hava an idea of the locaton itself, the birds that inhabit it, and where said birds usually are in relation to the Sun at the Golden hour times of the day.
Anything for the shot
Also if ur shooting family photos
A preschool asked me to shoot for their online ads
I used these techniques
He reported me bro
For a god darn joke
Bruh
Dave needs to wake up and realize that nobody I the right mind would abuse a random animal for a photo that would look terrible anyway
I got a warning for a joke for god’s sake
Ye
Anyways rate the photo
*I didn’t actually choke the dog
It’s just really fluffy
Also I gave it a treat after
you know making fun of animal cruelty means you're a real loser
She was happy
I understand, but it was obvious that it was an utter joke
Am I getting a warning?
No
Lucky, Gerald. Congrats! 🎉
I’d like everybody to know that I DO NOT abuse animals. I only shoot deer and pheasent.
Nor do I condone abusing animals unless it’s a pitbull named Cupcake that is trying to eat an infant.
@nova steeple
Uh
Fluffy dog= 10/10
Ok
How much do you spend on hair appointments for him/her
don't think I shared this, Brown honeyeater on the fly (heavy crop). I had a better pose, with the tail fanned out, but the head/eyes were too soft for my liking. A real pity as it was a much stronger pose.
None
👍
Nice
I know some people who spend hundred a month for their dog to get their hair done every week
Like holy crap, I love my cats to but we just shave their hair (which is still expensive to get done)
and a male Australasian figbird.
Lens?
Canon EF 500f4 mark 1. R3.
its very sharp 👍
yes, it's a big step up from my old 300f4 which is not a particularly good lens, despite being a L series. I believe the mark II 500f4 is a bit sharper, and I am saving up for that. But, I am on a limited income, so it will take several years before I can upgrade I suspect.
bbl
Bbl?
be back later
doing things around the house on my day off, so not always at the keyboard
I do very little sharpening btw
Oh wow, what SS were you using?
Cuz like it’s not over sharpened but it has good detail
No sharpening in dxo as I have found it oversharpens. None in lightroom. 1-2 passes, depending on the image in photoshop, of high pass filter set to 0.2px. I then resize to longest side being 2400px using either bicubic sharpen or bilinear, depending upon the image
Removing noise and working on your white balance help with perceived sharpness
Jan Wegener has a recent video on sharpness
Highly recommended
My high pass filter’s blending mode is usually set to linear light
gah that guys videos are so dopey sometimes.
Dopey as in stupid or dope=good?
Oooo the 2nd one is pretty good
Is the af fast adapted on RF lenses ?
Also doesn't have is right
adapting doesnt affect af
yeah, but it's just overall a very old lens
Reasonably fast but not native RF speed
thanks
considering getting one some day
hoping the new 500 makes the older ones prices go down a bit
Yes it does affect AF, but depends on the lens in question
well if its super duper old i guess, but it already wouldnt have worked on newer cameras lol
It has IS but it is very inferior to the mark 2 version
oh i thought it didnt have it at all
better than nothing
still must be quite a pain to hand hold a lot
Got this about 30 odd minutes ago
You get used to it
sick
cute, australian birds really dont look like ours
which makes sense
ig if i were australian i'd find common european birds cool
Prolly
kind of left bird photo for now, macro is a lot less time consuming and i havent got much time for now... But this winter for studies i'll be looking for eagle owls, hope i get the opportunity to get a picture, even though i doubt that
Mark 1 primes and only have 89% dpaf coverage
Cheeky buggers are kookas
cute
they're like land kingbird s
i think they're realted
omg i'm so sorry my typing is horrible
All good
yes, they are in the same family as kingfishers
They will eat big snakes
Yes, but larger and stockier build
slurp
well a pretty good day with the camera - saw azure and collared kingfishers (photos of both but tiny in frame as they were a distance away); 3 Brahminy Kites, 1 Whistling Kite, a pair of Ospreys on a tower from a distance, multiple Australasian Figbirds, Silver Gulls, Stilts (haven't identified them yet), Pelicans, Australian White Ibis. Haven't downloaded any images to the laptop yet, pretty knackered as have been up since 2am (nearly 12 hours). I think at least 1 of the stilt shots is very nice, and hopefully the Brahminy Kite shots from first thing this morning are good.
Woooowwww
Bribie Island has around 260 species I've been told
got there just after 5.30am, about 30 minutes after predawn started
2.2 hour drive
stilt, unidentified yet. A mate reckons it's a Pied Stilt, may be a non-breeding variant
juvenile pied stilt i think?
doesnt have the white back of a banded
and doesnt have the black neck of an adult
yes, that was what I am thinking too (and my mate)
male Australasian Figbird
the crown looks slightly odd but not too much
this one is awesome
how do you mean?
regarding the crown?
the juvenile stilt normally has that grey top of the head iirc? but this one has the grey patch lower, just above the eye
so that part is confusing me a little
Australian White Ibis
i think i seen this one a few months back
or something similar looking
oh just seen the full image, something different but similar colours
speaking of ibis, probably one of the uglier birds ive seen but i like them, seen this one on the same trip i seen the other bird, buffalo weaver
Gonna go out early to get some material for wrensday tomorrow
Cool!
nope, taken yesterday. I did have similar looking Black Kites a few months ago and you're probably thinking of that
yes, our Australian Ibis are hated by most people. We call them "bin chickens" cos they forage into public bins A lot of people are cruel to them. I quite like them, they have strong character.
my offerings for wrensday are rather lacking today
The facial detail in the right hand image is impressive
right outside my classroom
no crop
well slight crop lol
super close to it though
in low light 30 min before sunset
Lovely! I’m guessing sparrowhawk

Got some shorebirds
Decided to say fuck it and lay belly on the water to get eye level
Best way to do it
I use the flippy screen and hold the cam down low but aiming is harder
what lens you use for this?
or i guess my real question is how close were you able to get
The only good place ive seen for shorebirds is a public place and they disappeared as soon and I spotted them
Other than that I couldn't get a photo because it was behind a wall
i have amazing shore bird locations near me
that will probably be most of my bird photography subject
Got like 10 ft away lol
With 600mm
150-600
Ill send piccies soon
U have to be literally on the ground
might be a sharp shinned hawk too, very similar. Woud like to see the tail.
The babies are size of your palm
True, depends heavily on size too
yup
Got a bunch tonight, I’ll try and put some up later
getting ready for work, so may or may not have a chance to check later during the day
Sick, they kinda walk up to you if you stay still right?
Trying to figure out what lens I should get for them
cormorants can be quite nervous birds. My advice is to spot from a medium distance and get down on the ground and lay down and WAIT for them to get clsoer
They’re happy to swim around once you’re not moving or acting like a threat
over here at least, there's no way I could get 10" to them, not even crawling on my belly
yeah i don't think it'd be possible
Im talking about sand pipers and stuff lol
yeah what dave said
if u sit there for 10 min they get comfortable then u can get real close
yeah probably
yeah u have z6ii lol u can crop more
these are barely cropped btw
had to super-resolve it in LrC for any kind of detail
but i don't see them perching in the open all that often
A juvenile White Crowned Sparrow I found in my backyard this morning...
it’s most likely because he’s at a long focal length very close to the sparrow
and also the fence is coming towards the camera, while the sparrows eye is the focus point, and it’s behind the fence, so the fence is further out of focus
yeah, just a very jarring transition
Nah i decided to expose it brighter cause the birds look better that way
awesome kingfisher shot
wish they'd let me get that close 😦
Awesome 😻
Wow! Dream shot
From Tuesday @ Bribie Island
It’s kind of a unique spot, I sit on a fishing pier and the kingfishers have their little branch perch
Guys, I don't know what to do. I was out shooting photos and a hawk flew past me. I followed it into the woods in a zig zag pattern to prevent scaring it, and I was able to get fairly close. I didn't notice until now when looking through my photos, but his leg looks possibly broken. What should I do? Should I try to help it or leave it be? I've never been in this situation when taking bird photos
I don't know in your country but here in France, we have association specialized in taking care of birds so the only thing to do is calling them and follow their instructions.
I am in the United States. I noticed after I had already left, not sure if I should go back
I think I might have to
Search the web for a local raptor rescue or Audobon society
Call them and ask what to do
If the hawk is flying and hunting then he is probably able to survive
He was able to fly very well. He flew precisely to that small spot in the woods right past me as I was walking on a path pretty far away
Thank you both for the advice
I feel so bad for him
Call the rescue anyway and ask, they will have an answer
Sounds good
Yeah he'll probably be fine. Things like that happen but they survive
Cool photos! Send the full ones when you're done please
Is it wrong of me to edit/keep the photos I took? I don't know if it would be immoral to keep them, what do you think?
It’s totally fine
Here’s an injured squirrel, he doesn’t know his photo was taken and he seems to be doing just fine
Okay, I just didn't know what the best thing I could do in terms of being respectful in wildlife photography was, thank you
One of them!
the photo is awesome
great detail and contrast
and it does not seem "immoral" to me
you as a photographer are just capturing nature as it is
Fair enough, thank you:)
I wonder if it was caught in a spring trap :/
Maybe? I hope not
I'm sure the hawk will be fine though. It's really sad but many survive worst than that
rescues will go out and get them, they have their ways
but if they're flying just fine and they're alive then that must mean they're able to eat
tough to catch a bird that can fly perfectly lol
my cousin does raptor rehab, hoping to visit one day and get some pics
Are anyone of you bird photographers professionals?
If so would you have any advice for me? I am a homeschooled 15 year old in Michigan and am considering pursuing Wildlife photography as a career.
Oooo same I wanna do that. I'm not homeschooled but everything else is almost the same
Similar area and similar age
Wildlife photo specifically is not a field that’s easy to get paid in
better strat is to get a well paying job to afford the big lenses and trips
I'm in michigan too tho
I recommend Kensington Metropark if you're near
goated park
crosswinds marsh is good too if you're south of detroit
I usually find places I wanna visit thru the ebird app
ebird is great
Some regional Audubon’s have bulletin boards too where people post sightings and rare sightings.
There’s rare bird alert groups on Facebook, twitter etc.
Oh I see this is about wildlife stuff as a career. That takes a ton of skill and even more luck.
Not much of a career, just try have fun with it
Todays pic
First time trying out aperture priority mode for birds, still unsure if i liked it more than manual for stills. And don’t know how it will work for birds in flight.
Nice shot!
I think being in control of your shutter speed is very important, so if I were you, I'd stick with manual with auto ISO, and basically leave aperture alone, unless your lens is sharper @ f8
And aperture priority mode with BIF shooting will be pretty tough, due to the camera choosing the wrong shutter speed.
I would not recommend it. It's a very very tough sub genre of photography to make money from . You are better off getting a day job, say, as a photography's assistant in a studio, or your own studio, doing portraits, or better still, weddings . Much more consistent income.
had a good day with the camera yesterday - got some male/female Red-backed fairywren shots, a family of 4 buff banded rails (kind of like quails), spotted the sacred kingfisher twice but no photo opportunity, got some shots of a new bird (Australian Reed Warbler I suspect), Crossed paths with a keelback snake and eastern brown juvenile (the latter being deadly if you get bitten).
Nice shots, beautiful bokeh rendering also!
the bokeh is nice, but not as good as a longer prime FL.
Do you guys carry a backup camera when going on birding trips?
Not me
I only have one camera lmao
Yeah maybe some professionals do but personally I walk around and it would tire me out too much, I maybe have the other lenses but I never use them so usually just a camera, binoculars and tripod if it's a good day
Yeah will just bring 1 camera.
I always have a wide lens in my bag, But never uses it 😂.
That's would I would do. Sometimes if I drive to the park, I'll leave my bag in the vehicle because I never use it anyway
But you should check the battery level before doing that lol
Tried maxing out my bag
With 2 dslrs, 1 wide lens, 1 zoom tele lens, and a tripod +gimbal head. My backpack weights at 9.5kg 😂
Nope
Yeah, i usually carry stuff like a powerbank, but ended up never using it even after a full day of taking bird pics.
Since i rarely use my phone on the field
Really need to simplify my bag
Oh! I bring a power bank because my phone hates me and sometimes I use 2 tracking apps and a bird sound recorder, it dies in 20 min
Well I use ebird Merlin and a fitness tracker so that other people can see my location bc sometimes I go alone
Yeah
I only bring my tripod when i know there is a nest on location. Otherwise i go handheld.
Yep
amazing, this is ZFC?
Having a 500/4 would help things yeah
Having to run down at f8 kills things a bit, so I shoot on hills and across valleys when possible
Yep
Wait so that was 300mm + crop + 2x converter? 900mm??
1.7x tc
500*1.5 = 750
the converted lens is a 500/6.7, and i run it at f8 to kill flare on highlights
So many tits
this leaf looks like its set to linear light or smth
no, but I should...
I typically stop down to f7.1, cos using a 1.4x TC. The lens is very sharp wide open at f4 sans TC. Even at f5.6 with the TC it's very sharp, probably 95% the sharpness of sans TC.
free the nipple!
Biggest issue for me is flaring honestly
Teleconverter blows highlights somewhat
I haven't noticed this issue with my TC, but it may be TC/lens/gear specific
i havent really noticed flaring differences with my tc either nor have i heard of that really when it comes to downsides of a tc
only thing ican think of is coating
might be making a small flare bigger, not sure lol
Yeah coating issue springs to mind or decentered lens elements
tc im using is the rf 1.4x, got mine brand new basically, so chances are low for issues (although not impossible)
im using it on my 100-500 and even for a zoom its sharp
similarly, didnt notice many (if any) issues with my zoom, but every now and then someone gets a decentered version
it's a fresnel lens, i think that may be part of what happens
only a problem with harsh highlights in harsh light, with the TC on, think tops of osprey heads
if i stop down it goes away
I have issues with the tops of Osprey heads too - they are very hard to expose for, especially in bright light
I set my camera to meter for highlights and it usually works well
sometimes I gotta crank exposure comp up
I try and underexpose for Ospreys but it never works out as they are usually out in changing light...
My usual method is to dial a stop of compensation in if I know i’m shooting them in the sun
For white egrets it’s like two stops
I'm shooting fuly manually, so I tend to adjust the exposure via shutter speed or ISO to match what I'm seeing in the EVF's histogram. I find it very hard though to see the blinkies in smaller areas in the R3's EVF and I really wish Canon would pull the finger out of their asses and introduce Blue/Red Zebras for blown highlights. A much, much, much better solution.
1 from Friday. Kinda moody processing.
auto iso with control ring compensation solves this stuff quickly and easily
Yeah auto iso is king. A cameras job is to get out of the way of taking photos and that goes a long way. Less time adjusting more time shooting
I have found auto ISO to not be very good, at least with my R3. I've been shooting fully manual for years with my macro imaging, so will stick with it.
auto iso works the same on all canon cams really, its good on all but is a diff skill to full manual
i use it mainly for birds and street where lighting changes fast
Red backed Fairywren from last Friday. Tough conditions, fully in the deep shade, ISO12800. Had to tame that background and it was some effort in post processing, but I think it turned out OK
full manual is fine too ofc
Oh man lucky bastard
Would love to see a red back fairywren
I'm going after Rainbow Bee Eaters tomorrow
got several shots of both the male and female
first time I've seen them in like a year
I only really get Splendids, White wings, Red wings and Purple backs when it comes to fairy wrens
Oxley Creek Commons has removed a lot of underbrush/bushes to make it safer (saw a keelback snake and eastern brown last Friday)
I've never seen a splendid, or white wing, or red wing, or purple back
the little bridge there has a lot of red fairywrens
red backed
where are you going for the Rainbow Bee Eaters?
also has lots of bee eaters
Will probably try Gwelup or Waneroo
never seen a single bee eater there yet at Oxley
its the only reason i still go oxley creek coz the rest of that place has the messiest vegetation
ive seen maybe a dozen this year there
I know bee eaters have shown up there by following local bird pages
I know people have said they were up near the T intersection just past snake gully
snake gully is that wooden bridge isnt it
a Perth...I have no suggestions for Perth, sorry!
i saw them there by going just a little bit off the path and looking up
where the Australian Reed Warblers are
not seen either superb or variegated there
saw both 3 or so weeks ago
This popped up infront of me when I was trying to set exposure for a Shoveler
not cropped
ooh thats nice
cant seem to get it to look right
never seen one of those not overexposed lmao
all of my shots are half sun half shade
what bird is that?
Stirated Pardelote
I had some that worked out okay, but they're from my old 1500D
ah, thank you! I have seen 1 before, I remember the name
got 1 of those like 18 months ago when I was starting out
Another Red backed Fairywren shot from Friday.
yeah theyre a bit flighty
The one with the web in his beak just jumped infront of me
and did a lil side to side hop like he was teasing
but the rest of the time, basically impossible
I got mine at White Hills Reserve, Camp HIll (great area)
thats perfect lol
WTF is happening LOL. I told Lightroom classic to open an image and edit in Photoshop 2024...so what does it do? Opens Photoshop but no image loaded...and closes Lightroom Classic, WTF
2 updates ago to Photoshop caused Photoshop to use mega RAM - like 8GB+ for 1 single 24mp image with like 8 or 9 layers...
this laptop used to just fly when it came to processing, it now runs like a fucking dog
This is the ideal use for it yeah. With birds by the time you’ve got round to setting your iso it’s disappeared
I can control all 3 points of the exposure triangle on my R3 very easily - that top dial is amazing for adjusting ISO on the fly
shit it's 9pm and I haven't even started dinner lol
another from Friday
anyone know what this bird is? Oxley Creek Common. Kind of reminds me of a female sparrow
looking at Google lens it might be a female Rufous Whistler
https://ebird.org/species/rufwhi1
Robust songbird with short, fairly stout bill. Male pale gray above, pale orange below, with a bold white throat bordered in back. Female and immature are grayish above, pale below with extensive streaking that fades at buffy lower belly. Inhabits drier woodland and shrubland. Loud whistling song, given by both sexes.
from that page
From Sunday. I don't know if this is an old or juvenile Australian White Ibis
got a few more images from Friday to still process, a brown honeyeater shot, a family of buff banded rails.
also, ,anyone know what this is?
got some Whistling Kite and Nankeen Kestrel shots from Sunday to still process but will do that tomorrow
Yeah the only time I've taken photos was at sunset. So sad the photos didn't turn out.
that's an issue for me too.
that last shot of mine appears to be a Varied Triller it seems. Nice!
Yep same. Beautiful Kingfisher
anyone got experience with lens/body rental? Looking at this - https://www.cameracorp.com.au/mirrorless-camera/canon-eos-r5-body-with-rf-24-105mm-f4l-is-usm-lens/562675-4007645/?filter=canon&sort=price-desc and I note that it's a 6 month rental minimum, which is a fucking joke...
Brand New: Canon EOS R5 Body with RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens, R5PK
is this just an Aussie rip off thing, or is rental in the US or Europe better than this shit?
rental in US is fine
u can rent single day, weekend, weeks etc
they give u free weekends if u rent on friday
so if u rent friday they dont count sat or sunday in the rental
Six month minimum damn
I’ll never take lensrentals for granted again
any suggestions on Aussie alternatives?
right
that was my sentiment
Ted's does fine iirc
looks like you got a Rufuous Whistler and that Rainbow Bee Eater shot is awesome mate!
wish I got better exposure on the baby musk duck but theyre prone to shyness
2nd one for me, yellows look more natural
I had no idea what sort of duck that was. Looks like you had a good hunting day
I had a pretty crap arvo 😦 every raptor took off as soon as I looked at it from a mile away...
a bit of an exaggeration, but you get my drift.
I suspect Australasian Reed Warbler, family of 4 buff banded rail birds and a brown honeyeater about to have a snack. The last of the images from last Friday
First place I went was p meh for rainbow bee eaters
Apparently they'd been more active the day before when it was a 35 max
I tried the other side and got that shot on the power lines
Then I tried a new place, where they actually bothered the fence off the nesting area
Way better enviro for them, still gotta edit those shots. That's where I got the RBE doing delivery
