Flat bokeh works but there's definitely better options
its fair to say super close itll matter more with aperture
i get more branches lol
i like just a bit of detail
Yeahhh those branches are annoying
anything like a single branch though the aperture isnt really an issue of course
My latest bird shots were the all white ones
this ones f/10, but, not much in the way of the bird to begin with
just grass in the bg
the high key b/w ones right
ive almost never shot a bird on the ground lol
Yeah those
its interesting
feel like only certain birds fit, of course a robin would be on the ground
ducks and stuff too
Ducks are annoying to do head portraits of
ducks are nice in the water over ground tho
Their heads are so oddly shaped its hard to frame properly
other monochrome birding lol
you want them side on perfectly really
i guess what i like is fitting the bird in a natural environment
chickadee would be in a bush for example
And they look natural
i dont like birds standing on manmade objects much
but when its a dove which is essentially the same bird its different
doves are wild
Manageable sometimes
Probably to do with their symbolism
theyre just not associated with pests in our minds as much lol
like bin chickens rarely look nice to australians
i personally want a 400 2.8 for those closeup shots with bokeh circles, plus i just dont have a telephoto prime anyway, some day lol
everything else i dontmind flat backgrounds
My one good bin chicken photo
Not even with the tele
And the masking job is really shit because I did this when I was still a newbie
ive got some ok ones but still
that was a very close bird then lol
dumpster duck
not a bird we have here i think sadly
i have bird feeders but yeah, all of the birds i see are wild
but chickadees are almost everywhere for a reason, theyre great at getting away if they need to
ill have to move away to a city soon but ill find birds somewhere there too, hoping to see cardinals
will be able to see pigeons for sure
man even tho i keep a bird feeder and plenty of water for them to drink from i only get like crowd and pigeons
there's like nothing other than those 2 and sometimes Indian mynas
if I'm very lucky i can spot few mini sparrows
but if i like travel 20 - 30kms there's a marshland and lots of birds migrate there
cool place
You guys are all so talented at capturing birds, I'm still learning lol. I have bird, hummingbird and squirrel feeders along with a homemade bird bath in my yard. So far I get blue jays, cardinals, sparrows and woodpeckers to name a few, but they get overran with Starlings. As so as the Starlings realize I put food out they will chase all the other birds away.
A young one
I took this from my bedroom window so that's probably why. I'm still learning all the settings on my camera, I have a Canon Rebel T100.
I'll look into getting that thanks 🙂
ayo 🤬
what lenses yall using
tamron sp 70-300mm
sigma 150-600
Canon rf 100-500 but I had the 150 - 600 in the past
heyo what software did you use to get your watermark in
also amazing pics
Photoshop
tysm
Great. Recommend the botanic Gardens highly
Enter from the train station side and go towards the lake
tysm
Be ready for some humidity
When I go again next march I'm also gonna try gardens by the bay and Windsor Nature park
i mean I'm a Florida man and an Indian so
Mainly meant that for the Camera
oh~
what time did you go there
I'm deciding if i wanna go early morning or during sunset
I went in march, June is supposed to be towards the end of birding season
With it peaking in April
aww noo
it's fine it's not the end of birding season
hopefully some birds stay
you should still see plenty
can u show me some pics that you took if that's possible pls
in my backyard i can only spot ravens and pigeons and Indian mynas and indian parrots
Honestly dont recall. @fast hare is from Singapore and can probably give you more accurate info
tysm
hi
hello Singapore man what places do you suggest to take bird pics
yeah botanic gardens and kranji/sungei buloh
I guess I was just wanting the more wider aperture for lighting
tysm
yo guys do you suggest buying a lens hood ?
yeah, doesnt hurt and helps block sunflare
Not very sharp, good take though, just need to fix the focus. Way better than my first!
ty, i found out later that my metering was in 21
hmm.. not really. I thi k you're missing the point of focus and too much iso. The background is noisy
they are better though! keep it up
juvenile roseate spoonbill? I'm pretty sure it is
Sounds like youve never shot a kingfisher before lmao
They are very skittish
Very hard to get close to
obviously when you are very far away 300mm wont be enough but for the beginning it can work
And its cheap
300mm on an apsc can be enough for birds, but mostly if you stay in hides and wait. Most the times it'll be short otherwise ngl but its definitely usable
i've had 400mm on a full frame for a year and got pics i really like even without staying in a hide
You want a really wide aperture on though then
cus 300mm really has troubles dissolving backgrounds
200mm is just a big no for me
absolutely no separation with the background, and just way too short even on a crop body
600mm or equivalent is the right middle ground
Yeah I have a 300mm too
i shoot birds with 400 full frame out in the wild fairly often, 300 apsc is definitely enough though on the low end
It's not as good as it could be but I can still get good photos
I crop a lot of photos too
400 ffeq is considered the minimum usually
seems decently sharp
cute
well its nice for habitat shots
scenery
for closeups, portraits and such, 200 is just gonna be frustrating
I didn't know hummingbirds went out in the rain - let alone that they hold still enough for a 1/60th shot in it
50 iso is refreshing sometimes lol
What shutter speed/aperture is the 2nd image shot at? really like that rain effect
1/1250 I think. I wonder how the bokeh on the rain would have come out at different shots now
was trying extremely low ss yesterday, 1/30 is possible with my setup handheld
guess ill experiment a bit since i also like rain^
That shot is handheld? Very nice!
yeah, had to hold it very steady but about 4/10 were in focus
birds will sometimes just kinda sit in one spot at times
hummingbirds are just helicopters so they pause in flight
It's amazing how low your shutter speed can go sometimes and still have a great shot of a bird
been experimenting with a tc on my lens which brings it to like f/10, pretty bright if you ask me
not the highest iso either
r5 and 10-500?
r6, 100-500 and 1.4 tc
roughly 700mm f/10, and i can say the 800 f/11 would be great in most conditions for stills (darker being higher in iso lower ss of course, but the ibis+is handles it well)
the 800f11 i find rather okay
IQ isnt great but its decent, what lacks most is af imo
like it catches on stuff, but half the shots arent really rasor sharp
r6 iirc has like 40% of the af area too which doesnt help if they move
on newer bodies i think its 80%
yeah it doesnt help
idk if its for all the new bodies, but it is on the r6 ii yeah
but for the price its still nice
100-500 is quite different from the 800 f/11, although same with its price point
at least at the 700-800mm range theyre comparable though
i've heard really good stuff about the 100-500 yess
just a tad too expensive for me for the aperture
with a 2x tc its f/14
although with the 1.4 i havent had much issues really even in lower lighting for stills
gotta keep in mind the tc is like one 600 f/11
crazy how clean it looks for that
yeah was really surprised i could actually use that pic
especially considering the raw is still quite a lot underexposed
id like a faster aperture lens like a 400 2.8 if it wasnt 7k or something, but, issue is one is 12 lb and the zoom is like 3 or less
i feel that id use a 400 2.8 in a controlled environment, which leaves room to lower ss anyways
i'd want a wider aperture mostly for the bokeh more than the ss
but yeah price and weight are a pain
i'm hoping to find a cheap ef 500f4 when the rf 500 comes out
this is where id look at a 70-200 as well since that could be used (albeit with difficulty) for birb
ef models accept tcs
yeah
ive considered the 600 f/4s a few times too but the ones "affordable" are like 20 years old with no spare parts
maybe for me the 100-500 is just the go to lens since i walk frequently, but, a prime would be nice to have say when im in my own yard or something
yeah anyways i'll always need light lens for traveling
800 f/11 should do well anyways, almost the same size as my lens and weighs roughly the same, and i can fit mine in a shoulder bag with the camera body and a prime lens
yeah i can fit it with my camera, a 100 macro and the 100-400
Nice birb
Nice birb
Fringilla coelebs for the intimate
was that a wild owl ?
i mean i was kinda guessing so, wild owls arent really easy to approach
still nice though
Southern Boobook?
Yep
The 2nd last boss of Alice springs
very tiny birb (not sure which crop i like more)
Yes it is
Kingfishers are very hard to shoot
If you have a aps c with good AF then 300 is usable
Cool hummer
300 is usable on apsc, not on ff
Though i find it good only with really wide apertures like f2.8-f4
Otherwise just bad bokeh
I have trouble with kingfishers with even 600mm on aspc because they're so skittish
I can't even imagine 300
I shot kingfishers at 400mm on ff
It's definitely possible if you're shooting from a hide
I was sitting about 3/4 meters away
with 400
i tried a thundershower day with a tc, pretty happy with the results (even if a little higher iso at f/10), next week florida birbs hopefully
from my experience theyre easily spooked^ havent done a blind though with them
i developed a "walk like a snail" type method which usually works on birbs but didnt on them
depends on birds, here in europe you just wont get close to wild bird by just walking to them
they usually fly away from at least 10+ meters away
this is what i normally do too, just be a snail and avoid eye contact and I can normally get in good range, however it always fails when it comes to kingfishers
If you are trying to walk closer to a bird, don't walk directly towards it either. Guess what moves dirently towards birds? Predators.
You'll get closer if you can move indirectly closer, like arcing towards them while moving almost perpendicular, or long zig-zags
Ikik, I've tried a lot of different strategies, but still, here birds are just really shy
The fact there's a lot of hunting in France probably doesn't help either
little bluebird fledgling
E
big birb
Looks funny
its a new bird to me, looking into it its related to the shoebill
called a hamerkop
yeah looks a lot like a shoebill
saw this really cool bird yesterday night
really lucky to see it as its really hard to spot, and it doesnt move at all during the day
that was with the 800 f11
thats a nightjar, they should be around here, although ive never seen one, great thing to capture as theyre usuaully invisible
Yeah they're really hard to find, though you can hear them at night
that bokeh is so visually pleasing
Nightjar?
Only ever active at dark
So that’s suprising
Yes they're only active at night, but they can be seen sleeping during the day
Actually it was about 9pm, and we were waiting for the sunset to shoot butterflies when we heard it sing for like 3 seconds. We went on top of a rock to see if we could see it in a tree by any chance. And we got so lucky that my friend found it in about 3 seconds in the first tree he looked, sitting in that position
We really were hella lucky to see it
Sweet!
I bet! Good find, thanks for sharing.
macaw, blueberry and watermelon variations
Tame ?
tame as in wildlife sanctuary, so not exactly a pet but not wild, they can also speak english
free to fly whereever, but, was a bit of a warm day
according to the signs near their perch they still bite and attack people if you pet them lol
but i guess they tolerate people
i seen more than a few in different perches with birds throughout the area, but it was 100 something F and humid, even the vultures were a bit tired
Cute
I like first one more. Better understanding how small bird is
Strawberry!
Okay so I got some great photos of the belted kingfisher, my favorite bird
And others
Love the king fisher shots here!
Gorgeous sandhill crane & green Heron as well!
Thank you! I waited for like 20 minutes and she sat there for about 2
:DD I was very excited about these shots
Belted Kingfisher looks gorgeous
Thank you :))
can see why it'd be a favorite, such a striking bird
Those are beautiful
(goldfinches)
Only real decent shot I got from the other day
Havent been out for a while
I have been to a zoo the other day
btw: any tips for tracking birds mid-flight? Tutorial links/reddit threads also appreciated
What are the last 3 photos?
Glossy Ibis
Not that good because I don't have experience, but I think to start to have high shutter and hold down the shutter, when the bird starts to take off. Try to start ahead of it and predict where it's going, maybe??
Or look at YouTube, some of my favorite resources are there
Does anyone know what bird this is? Never saw it before
Where was it seen? Location helps a lot with ID.
germany, I think its called a black redstart
That’s what I was thinking
It is yes
Easy to identify with the red tail
The other redstart has the body red too
Red tail could be 20 different birds that look like that without knowing region
He specified it was in Germany, so no it could not
But even without knowing the country here, you can see it's a black redstart from how black it is anyway
They didn’t specify at first until I had asked for a location.
very blurry but thought it was funny how it looked like he photobombed their heart and they started fighting 😭
Same lamp
the one on the ground is a Killdeer, the one in the tree i've yet to figure out
Kildir
Looks like a chipping sparrow the one in the tree 🙂
yeah, some kind of sparrow looking at the beak/eyes
According to Merlin, I believe that's a brewers sparrow
I just think it looks more like a chipping sparrow juvenile
Juvenile chipping could be, that and adult brewers are very similar, especially with belly pattern
Yea
What a cool name for a bird
agreed
Ye but the name is kildir not killdeer lol
Unless in English you have another spelling for it, which I doubt
Yeah we spell it killdeer over here in the usa
English has some crazy spellings I don’t blame you lol
Haha yeah, ngl killdeer almost seemed like a joke
Ah that's a Shame, it's like a reminder (I also hunt a little).
oh man I am fucking HYPED
Spring is almost here, the Wrens are switching into their breeding season colors, and I got a new fuckin Camera
Lets GOOOOO
The color palette on those really pleases me.
Thanks. Love that you captured the wingtips hitting the water on yours
Cheers, really hoping to have time to actually take some proper birb photos soon. Thinking about making another crappy floating hide. But effort and time.
What’s your post sharpening process?
There isn't really one
I hate you
Welcome Swallow, Silvereye, Splendid fairy wrens and Little Egret
most of the year they're grey with blue wingtips
Still adorbs
Interesting shade of blue on the wren
In my experience they tend to be a bit brighter
Subspecies difference you think or you also have splendens sub?
Or that I took it while it was in partial shade
Maybe it's a camera issue but it looks almost purple in the light
looks like the patterns of a splendid fairywren with the colouration of a white-winged
but the splendids do have varying depth of colour based on time of year and individual
Looked back at the raws to see if maybe I just overdid it with shadow highlights or something
but nah, it's just that deep
it was in some pretty deep shade, but it was the only one in the area that was in its full colors
Cold chicken
Burr
This honker was very polite, didn't hiss at me once
Sweet, we have a group of geese and they hissed a ton
A bit out of place, but it's a bird.
Anhingas are so cool
All birds belong
What are the white birds? (The other 2 are anhingas right?)
The White ones are Little Corellas, the other two are white face heron and Australasian Darter respectively
oh alright, sorry I've never seen a anhingas, I was just guessing. Very pretty!
Ooo what are those species?
In order, Australasian Grebe, Purple Swamphen, Yellow Spoonbill, Crested Grebes, Pink eared Ducks
a plover
cute
F for the fish
F
I kind of just take photos of anything that I can. It’s mostly nature, but I’ve been able to get some cool shots of birds.
any birders that could identify the specie?
is it just a brown goose?
What area/region are you in? Thats always most helpful when trying to ID!
Eastern Slovakia
it was the only one in the park though
and i doubt it's native
could it be african goose perhaps?
those have big hups on their heads no?
Did you get a view of its belly?
True. The white on the face next to the beak is closest to a greater white fronted goose, but it's hard to tell without seeing the belly
well i have this photo as well
can't really see the belly though
Actually I feel quite confident that's what it is. Like 90% sure it's a greater white fronted goose
to me just looks like some sort of an hybrid/tamed variety
Hmm fair. I'm not as familiar with domesticated/farm birds
either that or an exotic species imported i dont know
The white band above the beak and on the wing matches pretty close to white fronted which is why I was sure of it
but it is a common marking
the overall look of the head is just not it, also the beak would be shorter and yellow
True
Tempted to download every pack on merlin just to be able to get a straight answer no matter where on the globe
the photo id i wouldnt consider very trustworthy
for certain species maybe
but a lot of the time you have to look for very particular criterias
the audio id is good though
most times
Pink beak on white fronted
Yeah I remembered that when talking to tano 😅
Ah sorry I didn't want to read it all.
Omg why does everyone have such great photos
I only have a few good bird photos
I posted in submissions this round and that was one of my best photos of recent
Oh my gosh the middle one !!!!
thanks man, appreciate it
i only got my first camera a month ago so it means a lot
pretty new to this lol
cheers
olympus om-1ii and 40-150mm kit lens
Focus looks soft here
It's still a great photo! Better than what I could have done
don't compare yourself with others
compare yourself then and now
I really like the second one, the lighting is amazing
Thanks for your support. I appreciate it 🥺
Thank you ❤️
it just takes time and practice
i was disappointed of the photos that i was taking
i then i checked my old Vero account lol
these photos are from november 2022
And these are from august 2023
just be patient and practicepracticepracticepractice
and these are still bad when compared to like 95% of photos here
but i'm happy with my progress
just keep shooting
Dude that's a huge w
Thanks for your motivation and support
Imma practice more and I will never give up in photography ❤️
Sure you must be proud tho
What? Those are amazing!
hell yeah
i was proud of my work when i stopped comparing myself with few months of practice to people with $20k in gear and years of practice
Comparison is a liar. Don't compare yourself to others. Try your best, practice and have fun! Comparing yourself ruins the fun of a hobby
Yeah for sure
thanks!
Galatians 6:4-10 in the Bible states that comparison is a liar. Be proud of yourself.
facts were spoken today 🙏
❤️
I have a sticker on the back of my phone and I try to remember that
I do photography for fun and i wanted to share that here
You all should be proud of your photography, it is all beautiful in its own way and you will continue to get better at it
I sure have improved, my favorite photos from a year ago were horrible too, but now I spend more time learned how the settings work, reading and trying things out in the field. Learning is fun when it's not forced
Woah! I love those close up photos, the first 2
I barely see birds eating things other than seed lol
seeing those birds in action is rare
they nail their prey to a stick and tear them apart
And uhh what's happening in the second 2?
one bird caught a fish, the other is stealing it from its stomach
moments after
But interesting
birds are interesting
What's the third wheeler doing lol
trying to steal too but not very successful haha
What type of birds are there?
I have one photo of a broad winged hawk with some type of bird leg is their mouth. Pretty long so I can't identify it
Never heard of those birds!
that would be really cool to see, we have very few birds of prey here
I have double crested cormorants
I'll pull up the image of the hawk rq
It'll take a moment lol
Not that good of a photo, the good one didn't have a leg lol
I have one other
I don't know what type of leg it is tho
@barren yoke see? This the kinda stuff I can't even compare myself with lol
i need to finally sell a kidney to afford a tele lol
Or you can try to adjust what you take photos of
eh those arent artistically great photos
theyre just cool moments, just takes persistence
I usually look at quality over artistic
but also yes a cheap tele helps a lot
I try to get closer to the birds, or you can landscape photography. What mm do you have ?
weeeell
my current setup is an a6000 with a kit 16-50mm and a prime 50mm f/1.8 (75mm ffeq)
oh thats awesome to see
Yeah the other photo didn't send
so i did already adjust to get those photos
Oh. I have a camera kit from Amazon. It has a 50mm lens and a 75-300
They are still really good! Please don't compare yourself
You can crop things aswell
if you did these with a 50mm thats very impressive
i would certainly save up for a tele, you will see your photos jump in quality
I'm planning on getting a sigma 100-400 f/5-6.3 sometime soon
hopefully in september just in time for my fav airshow
cause that's where my photography interest started with these two photos lol
Wow!
Im going to an airshow next weekend
Small town so not much for fancy planes but
Do you have any tips?
ya i bought a used a6000 with a kit and 50mm f/1.8 in early july
i basically only use the prime 50mm
i look for places where wildlife is used to tourists
when you get the 100-400 youll be amazed
Like thta groundhog photo was taken from 1-2ft lol
Yeah I want to do research for a larger lens and then figure out how to save up
But I'm trying to take a break from buying a ton of stuff
oh ya i bet
the staff at the local airport is super nice and gave me access to pretty much as close to the runway as one could get
so now i just need to get a tele to improve the quality
Amazing! @icy sparrow do you have any tips for taking photos of an airshow?
if you don't have a tele for flybys, use contrast with the sky
I did that in my PFP
It's an A400M and Grippen flyby
And then focus on static displays
Ask pilots if you can take photos of them
pretty much it lol
been doing photography for only 11 months so i can't really tell ya much more lol
True
Thanks though! I'll probably check yt for some vids
I can see a pewee eating a cicada I think lol
I don't know what type of bird it is and the window has a screen so I cant take a photo
Actually! It might be a northern flicker
Hmm no I think it's a great crested flycatcher
Sad that I couldn't take a photo
Hi, have a good day
It's a budgie right?
Oooo what are those now?
Is the first image a shrike?
Yeah
Couldn’t tell you, I was too far away, and was too dark to tell haha
Hmm where was it?
First image is a flycatcher
Although I’m terrible at flycatcher ID’s because they’re all so similar so I can’t say which one
possibly an Acadian though
Was in Kansas
Well you remember the Australasian Darter, the ducks are Pacific Blacks and the last one is a Great crested grebe
Alright cool. I've never heard of most of those lol since I'm in a different area
I'm in a bird server and they said kingbird
I believe it if a Western kingbird
Have you seen those before?
I love the last photo
I have a photo of a loon doing that but it's a tad unfocused
Think so, and I looked up where they live, semi deserts, towns with little trees. So that all fits perfect haha
had this photo for awhile and never posted it
Hi
Neat!
Saw some flycatchers yesterday.
Here's one of the photos that turned out
I don't have any other photos of this bird and I am very happy with my first photos of them.
I've been looking at longer lenses so hopefully this year I can get one.
What’s your lens currently?
The contest made me love the look of 18:6. It’s great for landscapes and subjects that have a very simple background.
75-300mm kit lens
I'm looking at a 150-600mm
bit dark
what lens do you use
the fairy wren ones could've been really nice, but they're dark, a bit soft for some, and the bokeh is what disturbs me most because its really close. if you could've shot from a lower point i'm sure it would've given a nicer bokeh
well smoother at least
I used an old 50mm f1.4 I got from the thrift store
150 600 sigma. It was really overcast at the time, rookie mistake showing up too early when it's technically still winter
Also not checking forecast by area
An old timer I met there showed me better spots afterwards, next time I go to that location (I certainly plan too) I will definitely get some better lit shots from a lower angle
Ooo can you send the model? It's probs the one I'm looking at
I personally think underexposure by just a tad looks lovely! Those photos are great
You could always edit it too
150-600 Contempary F5-6.3 DG
Think this is a lil better or a bit much?
Better yes
Manual with Auto ISO or creative auto and you'll never underexpose
I go manual with auto ISO personally and set it to overexpose 1 stop
Gives me more flexibility in post
I'll give it a go
I typically underexpose if the bird has white or is in the sun etc. Shutter priority, auto iso, I’ll manually flip around ev comp to not blow highlights.
Yeah that's something I heard is rather common and useful
I personally go full manual
It's a cute bird, at first glance it kinda looks like its been photoshopped blue lol
Then again I am used to seenig birds that are mostly brown
Australian animals are all specials ngl
Common reaction even from Australians
But they really do be super blue
The superb and red wings have this crazy bright blue on their faces
And white winged wrens are pretty crazy too
Also you don't appreciate how small they are till they're hopping around your feet
yeah wrens are tiny
we got the basic brown ones in the uk
They kinda the name fairy wren when you watch how they behave too
Why you posting wet tits
I used to but I’ve learned to use what systems are available to me to make my life easier. I fought this for many years.
Not photoshopped at all lol
It's a fairy wren and they're naturally blue
Also fkin impossible to catch still
Depends were you go, this one was pretty content to stay in the same general spot for enough time for a few bursts
But in other areas they move around like crazy
In the Perth area, two places with wrens that are easy to photograph are Lake Joondalup and Wungong dam
Amazing
Oooo whats that
Google told me it's a Red-wattled Lapwing (Vanellus indicus). I crossed it in Thailand last october.
doesnt look exactly sharp to me, still rather good though
Its awesome
poor guy's leg
aww[
One of the most common birds here. Love the look of them
Lovely
I'm going to a air show tomorrow! I know I made this for bird photography but lemme know if y'all want to see the photos I get (first time so idk how it'll turn out)
The bright blue birds over there are something else, I guess it’s cause the colour doesn’t show up much in nature it seems very striking
I remember the first time i saw a cassowary, that was very blue
Birds are birds. Some are just made from metal
My new lens is coming tomorrow!
sweet! what lens
Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3
Contemporary
I'm very excited, the planes were hard because they didn't get close enough, the yellow one was the best
oh nice yeah that lens is amazing
im actually trying to trade up from it after using it as my go to lens for wildfire after 2 1/2 years
but it’ll get you some good pictures too
amazing reach and amazing quality
Ooooo
Yeah I only have the 300mm that came in a canon eos rebel kit
So I wanted something that would work for a lot of my bird photography
it’s a solid choice 100%
Well today I learned that "mostly sunny" in the forecast actually means "full of shit"
yeah it was mostly Fan Tailed Cuckoos
Overcast conditions are better anyway hehe
thing I'm most bummed about is I didn't get my target birds
Shining Bronze Cuckoo and Spotted Pardelote
Personally I love sunny, overcast is boring
sun really changes colors, and makes harsh shadows, while overcast helps keeping colors intact, sweet and homogeneous light, and avoids getting in backlit situations
for example
overcast
sunlight
second photo is not mine though
the blue looks green, the orange looks yellowish
Sunlight makes better contrast
I just saw cardinals doing a mating dance or something but I didn’t have my damn lens
And can light up forested areas nicely
Noooo
I saw a nuthatch doing a defence thing but I only had a phone
i like both
overcast i find it easier to bring out colours with
i mean this looks like there was some fog too
things like this are direct sunlight, sometimes it comes out nice and othertimes everything is blown out
and the composition imo is what is more boring about it
can kinda seen it blowing out around the face
well such bird would really look better in overcast yeah, especially because of how colorful it is
thing is when i blow out the highlights and whatnot its not an edit to fix it, its just there now
overcast i can brighten stuff
But the eagle would look amazing in blue and clouded skies
Unless I edit it and put it in blue skies
Lol
overcasts can bring rain too which i love having in photos for some reason
second one would be hella better in overcast
but i do agree sometimes sunlight adds a little something, but still overall i'd always pick overcast over sunny
not to mention trees and stuff kind of block the sun if that makes sense, so when you get the sun bleeding through a hole in a leaf it looks off
this is something idid recently in a rainy overcast
still has lots of colours with a few edits
Pretty
ill need to find these birds where i live now since i moved, gotta restart all over again
might be able to find the red birbs here
little guy got curious while i was shooting landscapes
Aww
took it with a 50mm i had on
Cute
Pileated Woodpecker
Fluffy bird
damn must have been real close then
like 3ft tops lol
this is the original
Cool shot!
Lol 300th time he’s posted that same woodpecker photo
They need some new material
Ayy I ordered the same one. Should hopefully also be arriving tomorrow
Sigma 150-600 gang
It has arrived, I’m at work atm but I’m enjoying it so far
nope, Brisbane. This was a captive bird at Ipswich animal centre.
Ahhh looked like Osprey, thanks for the ID
Yea
goofy chicken photos
Think I've gotten my first proper shots of a bird of prey in flight
Will know more once I get home and on lightroom
Sigma gang sigma gang
Yay
Sooooo many people have this lens
Look
I also have this one but the lighting was wrong
It's an amazing lens and I see why
I'm gonna send a bunch more photos one like Monday if I'm done with my other "chores" school starts on Tuesday and I have things to do on Monday
Which photo?
Also I was on a bridge but I couldn't pass the opportunity
And I love the wood duck photo. The head tilt is everything
So personally I love those photos
That's all that matters
first day out with the new 150-600, I'm enjoying it
This lil guy was difficult to spot, high up in his tree
Yess! I love the 150-600 as well
I got a photo of an eagle but it's not that good
I'll send it later if it's an okay photo
i wanted to get a 100-400 from MPB but they sold out just as i was about to buy
it was there literally half an hour before that
now i'm worried i won't have that in time for the airshow on the 16th
Aw
Yeah I looked at the one I wanted and kept checking it. I didn't even think that someone could've gotten it before I bought it!
it was still there less than an hour before i tried to buy it
it's gone now sadly
gotta wait
Aw I'm sorry. I hope you get the camera lens soon!
Not a great photo but I like the performance of this lens even at 600mm https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/746760764357869588/1147602271807483984/IMG_6890.jpg
Picks up detail in the feathers nicely
Oh btw if any of y'all have Instagram I post on there pretty frequently. It's in my discord profile or my user name is el.zabeth.w
So yeah if you wanna follow me I would appreciate it.
Cattle Egret
Cute ❤️
I got a few shots of them at my zoo the other day!! Cute lil guys
Yes they are!
so much smaller than i expected too! it was my first time seeing them in person
They are smaller than the intermediate and great egrets by a reasonable amount
Brown Falcon from Monday
Pretty! I'll post some eagle photos after school today
it's a crop, I wish they'd fly closer. I'm really thinking I made a mistake going with the R3 over the R5. If the tax man is happy to me this year and the R5 II drops and has a better sensor readout speed, I may buy it
Good luck then lol
could grab the R5 II, sell the R3 and my 500f4 and get a mark 2 500f4
Hmmm
R3 is fine just need the 800 5.6 to go with it
Just get the 1.4x tc for now
true, it's an exceptionally good camera. I'm just finding that I can't get closer to the raptors (private property) and they aren't coming close enough so that I can get them in frame without having to crop. As I'm cropping a lot, it means I'm losing detail that more mp would help with...
I have 2 1.4x TC (mark 1 and mark 3, currently testing the mark 3)
a few from today at the local bird exhibition centre run by our local council
good stuff
low light for some of the images
thank god for the high ISO performance of the R3 and DXO Pure RAW2!
My editing is at least getting better
imho
Ooooo
Very cool
So I'm starting school and won't be back until 2pm CST every day of the week
:P
yes, but it's a mark 1 version...saving for the mark 2!
NSFW
the mark 1 is still really good, but the 2 will be a nice upgrade
gonna consider 600 f4 instead?
i would get 600 if i were a pure birder
nah too costly for a mark 2, and too heavy
fair
mark 2 used is around AUD 12k
wait arent they the same weight lol
the mark 2 600f4 is in high demand, so prices are high. It's a far sharper lens than the mark 3 version and the RF version
500 f4 is surprisingly light
i use the 400 2.8ii which is 3.9kg
I nicknamed her "big bertha" for a reason 😉
yeah the mark 2 500f4 is lighter and it's 1 of the reasons why I want to upgrade (along with slightly better AF, optics, much better IS performance, better paired to the mark 3 1.4x TC and of course, spare parts!!!)
I think I will struggle to find a buyer for my mark 1 though, so it'll be a VERY long time before I can afford the mark 2 if that is the case
ive been considering a 600 f4 gen 1 sometime
mark 1s are still in demand but price has dropped
still pricey at around 5.5k USD the last time that I looked
I paid 4.2k AUD for my mark 1 just over a year ago
like 13 months ago
if I get 4k, I'd be VERY happy. It's in superb condition - no issues with AF, IS, no fungus, haze or scratches. Cosmeticly NM other than the foot too. No de-centering either. No oil leaking onto the aperture blades. And I have the case for it as well as hood, and hood leather cover
for now ill stick with the 400 and the 150-600 i reckon, maybe 600 or 800 after the r5ii/r1
200 drop after 13 months would be excellent lol
I'm the 2nd owner and the 1st owner serviced it regularly with Canon whilst parts were available
I bought a lens coat too (around AUD $150 value) and would be throwing that in with the lens (it's no good for the mark 2 version)
my Kinesis L511 case fits the mark 2 500f4, so keeping that. Wonderful bag
yeah i reckon thatd easily be 4k looking at sold listings lol
Night mate
Black Kite (crop). Rather chill bird
Awww adorable
Lovely light too
Yeah it's so pretty
Yes!
Man these guys are so cool it's distracting while driving
you often see them hunting in clearings next to highways with their perfect hovering
Yup!
You're QLD if I recall correctly?
Spot on
Probably my fave raptor
Equally with Ospreys
I like Nankeen Kestrels too
I love them too, but haven't been able to really get close enough to get awesome shots 😦
I had a chance a month ago, but the day before had been taking some photos of my niece and forgot to reset the AF detection mode from people to animals...
oof
so what would have been totally amazing shots in flight were all soft
I was very cranky with myself
Princess Parrot (captive bird, Ipswich Bird Centre)
shot at ISO12800, around 0.5 stop underexposed
Stone Bush Curlew - a very chill chappie!
l;ooks like he's had a few reefers
Curlew's eyes are always interesting
there's this bird show I frequent and they have the curlew go right next to your feet
personally I don't really like shooting them as the one at the show is ugly af
LOL. I love all birds, so can't bring myself to call them ugly!!! They have beautiful eyelashes.
I've never liked the look of these mfs
Only thing I've really liked about them is their eyes
there's so much texture and detail in them
I must be their mother then lol
btw - if you didn't see Duade Paton's excellent video on the R7 focus issues that he released 24 hours ago, please go watch it. He explains what Canon said, tests things out and validates settings. Highly helpful to anyone who has a R7
I already use his settings
Queensland drinkers hate the Scream bird
Imagine this outside your window at 5am when you've been drinking the night before
I wuold recommend watching his latest video.
Oh? I just wanted an example of curlews screaming but I'll check it out
He sent his R7 off to Canon due to Af issues with his Sigma 150-600 EF lens and got a response from Canon Australia and then tested what they said with results
Look at my eagle photos!
So, if you have the R7 and Sigma lens, it’s well worth watching
Awesome mate!!!!
Thanks! I only had this immature one before and then I finally took those photos. It flew away right after the shot (2 diff times)
This was my only eagle photo before
Thank you
That’s an Osprey, not an Eagle
I love Baldies!
What? I think it's an immature Bald eagle
The beak
They are similar but they have a larger beak than the osprey and its yellow
Definitely not an Osprey
I'm kinda excited but I'm not sure if it will happen. I've got some feelers out with some friends of a friend of a friend to get attached to some research stuff with California Condors in Northern AZ. I have a feeling the timing isn't going to line up though so may have to wait until next year or I may have to go searching on my own at some point.
Yes, you are right
Agreed. Sorry, at work, so only had a very quick glance
No problem, I’ve done it too
yeah I know the one, I use a Sigma 150-600 too and his settings helped a lot
oh wait theres something new on that specific issue?
oooh
now this is interesting
What I was trying to say!
I think a similar issue affects my mark 1 500f4
Which should work without issue with the R3 unless Canon is, as I strongly suspect, deliberately nerfing their MLCs from working properly with the older 1st generation super primes
In order to push the sales of new RF lenses
