I disassemble a new to me used Silvia V5 to inspect the boiler and descale it. I had no issues before disassembly, heated up fine. Now that it's back together, my GFCI outlet is tripping whenever I turn it on. My hunch is that it's something to do with the heating element. When the heating element connectors are removed the GFCI doesn't trip. Also, when I remove the ground terminal from the power cord that's landed on the boiler ground terminal the GFCI doesn't trip (which make sense because I'm not connecting anything to the ground going back to the outlet to cause the issue). I don't have any continuity between the heating element terminals and ground or the boiler body. Anything else I should look for? I imagine I have a short somewhere but aside from the heating element I can't think of anything. Thanks!

Sounds like you narrowed it to the heating element to me

Yeah, 1 hour at 350f and the moisture in the heating element is gone. In the past I’ve been able to measure some resistance between the boiler body and HE when there’s a dead short but in this case I couldn’t. All fixed now.

Sweet, this is exactly one way to solve it!

If you really wanted to measure it you need an insulation resistance tester or ‘megger’ / Fluke 1503, 1507, 1587

The arcing only happens when there’s a high voltage applied between phase and ground
