Not everything he roasts is to my enjoyment but I respect what he does

I was in between things (closing my first shop and working random coffee jobs) when I discovered Luminous and got to know him over the years. He really takes care of the industry ppl and his customer base.

I’m still surprised that kumquat never expanded their tea line or opened up a tea centric room. Their teas can definetely be brewed traditionally 2-4 times before being cashed. You definitely miss out a bit when they just steep and trash it afterwards.

My experience of Mason and Luminous:

• Yep, I saw a good deal of the "drama" as it hit EAF. Yes, it does not paint the most positive picture. Am I ready to accept that story as full reality? Not quite.
• Parts of that drama are bits of tropes borne of racism. Not very nice, but it's a blind spot that I'm almost never surprised by
• I bought some of his coffees and threw one (El Mirador Pink Champagne) in the trash almost immediately. I mentioned this casually and someone reached out and suggested an approach that completely turned the coffee around for me. My takeaway was that just because a coffee doesn't come to your brew style or fit your normal definition of "good" doesn't mean it's "bad"
• I think that his green sourcing approach is one that should be encouraged
• I have had elegant roasts of his coffees, including coffees that would appeal to people who prioritize terroir and those who love significant process. His roast of Pepe Anaerobic Washed showed well even at 90+ days off roast, which to me says that his coffees should appeal to the tastes pushed by lighter-end-of-the-spectrum enjoyers, but for non-cup reasons don't
• His roast of El Placer White Honey Gesha is my second favorite next to Memli (And I've had a bunch of this green this past season)
• Yep having ------------------------ as your Insta reels is probably not a good look in the the gen alpha era, but that's his chosen format. He does have some incisive messages though if you can get past the "crash out guy" perception
• He's clearly got some scars from his time in the industry, but unless you're someone who's always lived trauma-free, perhaps there's room for some leeway
• Overall, my take is that he's human and he's trying to make coffee better, but don't take my word for it. Be curious enough to look into it, or just ignore and move on, nbd either way.

I tend to think that people tell on themselves over time, so whatever my initial impressions, I will definitely adjust them based on my experiences. But that's just me

I agree with everything you said above. For me, Mason has always pushed the boundaries (like he’s been preaching about 25gram baskets for the deep puck depth for YEARS before the 49mm conversion was a thing). Even with his sourcing, roasting, packaging/branding, he always tries new things and implements things if it works for him.

Yes, he’s a character and he’s full of traumas from the industry but also as one business owner to another there are lots of things I take away from him.

He’s definetely old school LA watched him grow that business since 2016 sling in bags out his car. Preferred it when he was smaller and weird than the big entity it is now. He had one hell of an angel investor there to expand that shit but I haven’t had good experiences in with quality of drinks and beans In quite some time. It now feels quantity of quality everytime I give it another shot.

Same with go get em that was a crazy rise and fall to watch. I’ll always get their fizzy hoppy tea but most other things are meh now at best.
