ehhh i'll report back on the chinese coffee scene when im there, but unlikely to be trying that much luckin. i think their greatest strength is that unlike sbux they are willing to open in any space and constrain their menu to that space. even if the space is basically a closet.
they are also much faster at pushing out new drink innovations than starbucks by a huge margin
i mean, just this week, an ethnic minority that wore hats with deer antlers as their traditional outfit, blew up on chinese social when they held luckin cups. luckin immediately flew out to the area to make a quick campaign and produce cup tops featuring the antler hats... thats like nuts.
i have a feeling even by the time i am there, this campaign/fad will be gone.
they do have a sick cup cap with the antler and fur though haha

Go to gout & co in Chengdu. Owner is prob one of the most knowledgeable coffee people I’ve met in my life. Super nice guy and also placed 3rd in a brewing comp. Speaks perfect English.

Don’t buy any coffee from anywhere that isn’t a well known establishment. Too many fake coffee places. I made the mistake of paying $30 for “yunnan gesha” and it wasn’t roasted properly.

Some Yunnan geisha are the same seeds as hacienda la Esmeralda & Elida estate. They’re trying to make it a thing there. Though, Gout and CO’s owner said he sampled a bunch of them but didn’t buy any this year, didn’t like this years harvest. I bought some anyways and it’s ok 😅

^ one thing I really enjoyed at gout & co was their emphasis on cup to enhance certain flavor notes on coffee. Each po I bought there came with tasting notes and 3 different cups meant to enhance certain flavors (eg. The cup with coffee in it was meant to enhance florality, perfect for the finca Deborah geisha I had there)
I think those cups are ones that Tim wendlebowe sells. I also heard that gout & co is making their own cup too
Another thing I appreciated about gout & co is that the degassing date is listed on the bag along with the roast date

@mellow sonnet and I tried my EG1 ULF using the orea Z1 and the melo drip column - same bean, grind size, same water/kettle, etc - and you can really taste the nuance between brewers too
