Iron and Bloom hours are pretty reliable. I personally wouldn’t go Sunday morning as it’s lined out around the block because of the farmers market though.
Where in the IE are you? I have a lot of extra coffee from ragdoll if you want some. I’m in Rancho Cucamonga and just shut down. Happy to share a bag or two just so I don’t have to toss it.
Iron and Kin is really good by IE standards. It’s not going to be life changing but I like it as something that’s just a smidge more developed and accessible. It’s not “roasty” or anything like that. The lighter roasts are closer to medium light
If you’re thinking of obscure hours. You maybe thinking of Little Badger Coffee that used to serve Ragdoll. The owner was short staffed and closed early frequently. @cold apex is their manager on staff and can speak to more recent hours. I haven’t been since we stopped working together.
I know they just renovated not too long ago and hired some folks.

Thanks for the kind offer for some beans. I am in West LA, but my girlfriend passes through the Inland Empire, as she grew up in Crestline and lived in Yucca Valley for many years. So when she is visiting her mom or her friends, she is looking for good coffee stops along the way. I also sometimes drive out that way with her.

Nook is sort of terrible. Arcade is fine. Luckys was good but went darker and cared less about quality as they grew.

Good question. I wondered the same thing even when I worked there.
Coffee is fine. Owner is unfortunately not set up to run a business as it stands—if Iron & Kin isn't in your scope you can try Harvard and Yale. They don't do pourovers or single origin yet but they had a popup collaboration with Her's and brewed Juan Peña Geshas behind bar. Be on the lookout for if they do it again.

Meh I’m not sure the coffee is even fine anymore. He has a bad habit of using old inventory for months and then using new inventory without resting as he runs out. So it’s unpredictable. That was one of my annoyances working with him.
And being closed for long periods of times means that it can sit for a loooong time.
Plus equipment is broken and poorly maintained. I don’t know anymore. I feel weird not being nice about it. So I’ll stop there.

Has anyone tried Lift Roasters? Is that a darker roast?
I went to Lift once and it was your standard medium to dark speciality with a lot of creative lattes. I think Riverside is the only location. Cool vibe though. It’s near my wife’s favorite salon.
I&K has gradually gotten lighter. Still a "averate pallette light roast" but its loring light and they're well done I am never miffed when I order a shot

harvard and yale is a bit hidden, its inside a walk-in next to bardot(?) comfortably medium light and they mostly just do simple milk drinks while they wait for their brick + mortar

Weiser Farms, Murray’s, Burkart Organics, and far far far more
Burkhart Organics consistently has my favorite stone fruits
I haven’t had Andy’s just yet (that will change tomorrow morning!) but I have been enjoying Burkhart since this spring

I think Aviary is fine. I run it as espresso and it works well for me, but I’ve heard many opinions that this year hasn’t been as solid as the first 10 or so releases. In my experience I agree. Still enjoyable though.

It's hard to give a helpful review as it's my only extended experience with a 98 burr geometry, but overall I have been happy with them. I assume they definitely are a compromise burrset, especially for filter, but can get enjoyable and interesting espresso and filter from it

I had that last time around. I was mixed. I tend to not like second baked croissants because of this reason. It’s hard to limit how much butter weeps out. That and if they use butter in the almond paste filling and topping, it will definitely be greasy.

mango def more balanced than the uli gelato version which was way too sweet

Under “Modern Espresso” the second part will hit with some and miss with others - comedy is a crap shoot. But the first part will likely be confusing to many which might be an issue unless I’m underestimating the sophistication of your average customer. I just know I struggled with trying to educate people at my pop-ups with overly technical menus and it ended up causing less rather than more conversation and interest. But when I put Espresso: Boomers & Turbos people were like, “what the heck is a boomer or turbo?” which gave me a lot of opportunities to educate and get them excited about trying different styles. As far as the “good things..” line being too cocky - not if you back it up 🙂
