Best we can say it that you make sure you have firewalls/some type of system security always active in your computer. I'm not too sure what just downloading Linux can do for you? Anyways though we personally can only suggest that you:
1) Don't open random Files/Links.
2) If needed scan the files you are being sent if not sure.
3) Block any suspicious calls if receiving any.
If anything, you should contact your local authority if you feel you are in need of more assistance.
