is it possible to have a universal background color? for cells and widget alike? and why are empty cells not shaded?

Currently, Appsmith does not support setting a universal background color for all widgets and cells at once. Each widget (like Table, Container, Button, etc.) has its own style properties where you can set the background color individually. For Table widgets, you can set the background color for cells using the "Cell Background" property, but this only applies to populated cells. Empty cells may not be shaded because the Table widget only applies cell styles to cells with data.
If you want a consistent background, you need to set the background color for each widget and, for tables, ensure that the "Cell Background" property is set. There is no global or universal background color setting at this time.

thats a bit disappointing. why does appsmith not have proper darkmode support anno 2026?

I understand your frustration. As of now, Appsmith does not offer a universal dark mode or global theming feature that automatically applies dark backgrounds and styles across all widgets and cells. Each widget must be styled individually using the properties available in the editor.
